This idea came to me the other night and when I started to write is just sort of evolved. It was originally going to be a one-shot but it evolved a few more chapters. The title was inspired by Dance with the Devil by Breaking Benjamin.
“Are you ready to go dear?” Asked Mrs.Higurashi through the closed door to her daughter's room. “Yes Mama.” Said Kagome before drawing in a deep breath to calm herself. `I will not think about that arrogant dog! I will be happy and enjoy my time tonight!' She opened her door to go down stairs to wait for her date. Her family was at the bottom watching her descend and taking pictures to immortalize the moment. Kagome looked radiant in a black floor length dress with slits on both sides up to the knee. It tied around her neck leaving most of her back bare while the front was decorated with a black on black design of a flower. “How do you feel dear?” Mrs.Higurashi asked remembering the desolate girl who had only this afternoon run sobbing into her arms. All that she had been to glean was that the jewel was complete and she would never see her friends again. Why her daughter would think such a thing was a mystery, anyone could tell what she and a certain inu hanyou felt for one another. “Fine Mama.” Kagome told her through clenched teeth, she wished her mother would drop the subject. She didn't want to ruin a wonderful evening of getting her old life back by remembering the bittersweet one she left behind. She knew that giving the jewel to Inuyasha was the right thing, now he would be happy and that was what she wanted. Even if it hurt her.
Before the conversation continued there was a knock at the door. “I'll get it.” Called Souta. The door could be seen from the stairs and vice versa. When the door opened Kagome could see her date for the school's biggest dance of the year, Hojo. Hojo was stunned at the sight. He knew his perseverance and patience would pay off. He recovered himself and greeted her family without taking his eyes from the goddess that was finishing her descent. “This is for you.” He said handing her a box. To her surprise it was not, as she had expected, medicine of any kind. It was a flower to be worn in her hair. The flower almost made her carefully sculptured mask of happiness crumble with its hauntingly familiar shade of red. Being very perceptive Mrs.Higurashi took it from Kagome and placed it in her raven locks where she couldn't see it. “Shall we?” Hojo questioned. Kagome nodded, hugged her family and said goodbye.
Entering the gym was like stumbling into a new world. (She should know.) The walls and ceiling were covered in black paper with splotches of silver paint, as though someone had flicked a paintbrush all over. Cut out silver stars and a disco ball moon hung from the ceiling and reflected back black light from a few lamps throughout the room. “Kagome!” Three voices squeal excitedly. “How are you?” “We heard you were coming.” “Isn't this great?” Her friends all spoke at once. “Oh. These are our dates.” Yuka pointed to three good looking guys who nodded towards the couple. “Let's get something to drink girls.” Eri commanded. The three girls went off then looked back at Kagome, clearly expecting her to follow. When they were out of hearing range of the boys, “I'm glad you finally took our advice about you know who Kagome.” Eri commented in a way that made Kagome feel as if she thought it was only a phase Kagome had out grown. Kagome made a noncommittal noise while wondering, `Did I ever think this was normal? Sango treated me as an equal, even though she was stronger than I am. No! Bad Kagome! Must not think about it!' She shook her head to clear it, `It might be harder to forget than I thought. But I will go on with life!'
“How many times I gotta tell you guys, I didn't do anything?! She handed me the jewel and took off!” A pissed Inuyasha yelled for what seemed to be the millionth time before storming out into the forest. “Works every time.” A smug and satisfied Shippo smirked at the other occupants of the hut. Inuyasha mumbled and growled as he unconsciously made his way to the well. When he got there he sat beside the old wooden structure and thought back on the days events. The fusing of the jewel, Kagome giving it to him and running while he was still in shock. `Damn Bitch. Why did she run off like that?' That hurt him more than he would admit. `I have half a mind to go over there and demand some answers! She never even gave me a chance.' The last thought was somewhat morose. As he looked up at the full moon something came over him. Not so much in a physical sense but in his thought patterns. `Bitch, I can't believe she left. She is mine and its about time she starts acting like it!' Some small part of him hidden deep inside wanted to protest thinking of another to whom they owed something. This part was ignored by the rest, if it was even heard. He got up and launched him self into the well.
“Would you like to dance?” Hojo asked Kagome. “Sure.” She replied hopping it would keep her mind from returning to five hundred years in the past. Hojo lead her to the dance floor where a slow song was playing, Love Hurts by Nazareth. As they danced Kagome felt a little odd, then when Hojo pulled her closer she felt uncomfortable. Because she didn't understand why she chalked it up to being unused to dancing. At the end she pulled away grateful that the next songs; The Authority Song by Jimmy Eat World and Somewhere I Belong by Linkin Park; allowed for dancing but not close so she could enjoy them. Kagome started feeling better when there was distance between them so when the next slow song came on, My Immortal by Evanescence, came on she decided to give close dancing another chance. It didn't feel any more comfortable the second time but it was bearable. Until, that is, Hojo kissed her. Kagome jerked back at the unwelcome touch. Hojo thought she was just shocked so he went in for a second, deeper one. Kagome struggled to get away and when she finally succeeded she slapped him. Everyone in the gym stopped and stared as she ran out the door.
On the way home the crying started for the second time that day as she realized something. She realized why she felt uncomfortable with Hojo. Inuyasha. She wanted it to be Inuyasha. She was so upset and her vision was so blurred by tears she missed the figure emerging from the well house.
