Chapter five
Grim things
Inuyasha casually walked across the field in front of him. The land was scorched from war and blackened by death. As he walked, he held a confident smile on his face. He could clearly see his half-brother standing not far from him, his blade ready at his side. Inuyasha walked closer, now only a few yards away. He smirked, spitting at the ground at Sesshoumaru's feet. He was unfazed.
“What do you want?” Sesshoumaru asked passively. Inuyasha flipped his bangs out of his face.
“You know exactly what I want. Let's get this over with,” he stated as he suddenly charged at his brother. He quickly dodged the attack, slicing his sword towards Inuyasha. He dodged as well, and jumped high into the air, aiming his sword down as he came back to the earth, leaving a dent in the ground when he landed, barely missing the youkai.
“You have gotten better, but I'm afraid not good enough.” Sesshoumaru rammed his sword at the hanyou, leaving a wound on his left leg. His sword met with Inuyasha's as they struggled against the strength of the other. Sesshoumaru put more force against his brother, pushing him away. He dashed forward, using his claws to cut his neck. Inuyasha moved to the left, the claws grazing his cheek. He stopped, head facing down, feeling the blood drip down his face and neck, staining his clothes. He lifted a hand to his wound, licking the blood from it.
Suddenly Inuyasha looked up, revealing blood red eyes and jagged stripes on either side of his face. He cackled, his blood lust running high. He pointed his sword at his brother. “You're going down, bastard!” he yelled as he slashed Tetsusaiga at his half-brother. “Wind Scar!” Sesshoumaru took a wounded step backwards, clutching his stomach. His brother had wounded him. Sesshoumaru transformed into his demon form, pouncing on Inuyasha, his lungs punctured. Inuyasha coughed up blood, struggling under his brother. Sesshoumaru transformed back, extending his claws in front of Inuyasha's face. His brother tried to speak to him, handing him a small, wooden box from a pocket in his blood-stained clothes. “Give ::cough:: this to ::cough:: Kagome…” he managed before Sesshoumaru took the box and slashed his throat. He watched his brother die, soaked in his own blood. He spit upon his brother's body before putting the box in his pocket, contemplating how to get his dead brother to the God Tree.

Kagome sat on the forest floor, making a daisy chain, thinking about all her friends and family from the future and from the now. She paused, feeling a sharp pain in her side, but it subsided and she forgot all about it. She had felt quite a few of those, lately. She had spent the past eight or nine months with Kouga by her side, not hearing any word of her friends. Once in a while she went into Kaede's village for a check up, as she was now very pregnant, but had not seen hair nor hide of her group of friends. Until today, that is.
“Kagome-chan…?! Oh, it's you!” Sango cried from a path not far away. She ran forward, hugging her friend, crying. Kagome brushed the hair out of her friends face.
“Sango-chan? What's wrong?!” She asked. She let her friend go. Suddenly Kagome couldn't breathe. She knelt to the ground, gasping for air. She felt the sharp pain in her stomach again, but this time, it stayed there. She could see her vision blurring as she was comforted by her friend. Then, her water broke.

“That's right, ye need to breathe. Now push!” Kagome could feel the searing pain in her abdomen as she pushed for the last time, breathing heavily. She felt the pain slowly drifting away, and soon it was gone, but she was sore. A little bundle was set into her arms. Kouga was at her side, both staring at the beautiful baby girl in her arms.
“Shinta(1). It would fit her perfectly.”
“Kagome… She's beautiful… just like you,” he complimented with a kiss to her cheek. Kagome stared lovingly down at her daughter. She had beautiful bright blue eyes like her parents had, raven black hair, and pointy ears and a bushy black tail. Kouga tickled his daughter lovingly, glowing when he heard a small giggle from the child. Kagome smiled, letting her mate hold Shinta. Kouga was going to be a good father. `Unlike Inuyasha would've been.' Kagome froze for a millisecond, wondering when that thought had popped up in her head. She was curious where the stubborn hanyou was, as the rest of her friends were by her side, along wth Shippou clapping happily for the new parents and their child.
“Sango-chan… May I ask you a question?” Kagome inquired. Sango looked up from her current spot cooing at the newborn, blinking.
“Hai. What is it?” Kagome sighed.
“Where is Inuyasha?” Suddenly there was a sense of dread in her companions. Even Miroku had a sorrowful expression adorned on his face.
“Kagome-chan… Inuyasha… He is not with us anymore…” Kagome could feel the air catch in her chest at her friends' words.
“You mean…”
Sango lowered her head. “Inuyasha… Is dead.”
Kagome's heart seemed to lurch to a stop along with the world around her. Inuyasha… was dead? How? “How… did he die? When?” she asked nervously, fearing what might have happened was caused by her. Miroku sighed, beginning the explanation.
“He had left to go find his brother about the time you had supposedly left, and found him in America a few months ago. They engaged in a fight to the death, and Inuyasha lost. Even when he was stronger than ever before, he could not manage to beat his half-brother. Sesshoumaru had Inuyasha cremated. We only found out a few days ago when he spoke to us, Kagome-sama,” came Miroku's sad reply. He continued. “We also found out that Sesshoumaru had given him a proper burial, mixing his ashes with dirt under the God Tree where he met you. He planted seeds there, using the new soil. He said that he thought that maybe his hanyou brother might be able to help something grow for once, instead of hurting it. He also told me to give this to you. Inuyasha wanted you to have it, apparently,” he added, holding out a small wooden box.
Kagome reached out with a shaky hand, opening the box. She found a note and two rings inside. She opened the note, reading Inuyasha's scratchy handwriting.
Kagome,
I realize that when you read this, I will most likely be dead and gone. I wanted to apologize for all of the pain that I have caused you, and decided this would be the best way to do it. I couldn't speak to you directly, because I know that I would screw things up with my brash behavior. I'm truly sorry, Kagome. I knew I couldn't have you no matter how badly I wanted you. I knew this, yet I kept fighting with wolf breath. Ha! Finally came up with a name for him, too. I guess I shouldn't make fun of him now, should I? I'm sorry. I'm sorry to you and everyone else for being so rude and arrogant. I truly wish that I could take back all those nasty things that I said. I really never meant to call you any of those things…
I wish I could take it all back, to hold you in my arms and tell you I love you, but I know, deep down, that I wouldn't be able to catch you. Just think of the rings as a wedding present for you and wolf breath… or Kouga. You know what I mean.
I will always love you, even if I knew I wouldn't be able to have you. You might have stolen my heart, even without knowing it, but I could never seem to get near yours. I'm sorry Kagome. I love you with all my heart, and even though I hate to say it, I know you'll be happy with wolf breath. But even in death, I will always love you.
The one who never learned until he hits rock bottom,
Inuyasha
Kagome cried uncontrollably while she held the note in her trembling hands. “Inuyasha, you stupid idiot! You went to get yourself killed, didn't you?! You bastard!” she cried, being cradled by Kouga, who was softly shedding tears. Everyone else in the room shed their tears for the hanyou, feeling extreme sadness for their fallen companion once more. Even Kaede shed tears.
“That stubborn hanyou had to go and upset ye like this. I'm sorry, Lady Kagome,” she said, holding Shinta and wiping Kagome tears with a rag.
“No, Lady Kaede,” she cried, “I'm not just upset… I'm glad, too. Glad that he finally told me he was sorry.”
