" Again? If this keeps up Naraku will have all the jewel shards!"
" I'm sorry but I have an important test tomorrow. My education is important too you know!"
" Finding the jewel shards is more important than this "education" thing!"
" No it's not!"
" Yeah it is!"
" Is not!!"
" Is so"!
" Oh you'll never understand so just sit!" The other companions turned from their snacks to see Inuyasha smoking in a deep, three-foot hole as Kagome began to crawl angrily into the Bone Eater's Well.
" I'll be back in a couple of days." and with that Kagome disappeared into the well.
" You would think he'd have learned by now." Shippo said quietly to Miroku.
" Ahuh." Miroku nodded in agreement.
" Shut up Shippo!" Inuyasha muffled angrily as he lifted his dirt stained face.
" Whoa! He could hear me?" Shippo said as he took cover behind Miroku.
" Of course I can hear you, ya little runt!"
" I thought his ears would have been clogged somewhat by the dirt." Shippo said in surprise
" What? Why you…!" Inuyasha yelled as he brought down his fist.
" What? What did I say?" Shippo yelled furiously as a bump started to rise on his head.
" Hey leave me alone I'm just a little kid!"
" Keh! Like I care."
" Just because Kagome's mad at you doesn't mean you have take it out on me!"
" You little punk, get back here!"
" Just try and catch me!" As Inuyasha ran after the screaming Shippo, Miroku turned to Sango.
" Shippo's right though. Inuyasha should understand that this is important to Kagome."
" I know. I don't know how Kagome can be so patient with him sometimes."
" What'd you say?" Inuyasha said as he paused and turned angrily towards them, eyebrow twitching.
" Um, nothing." they both said with an unconvincing smile.

"I can't believe him!" Kagome had returned to her own time and was walking home from school in fury.
" On top of that the test was horrid." Kagome thought to herself with a despairing look on her face. " I'm never going to graduate if this keeps up."
" Kagome!" Kagome turned around to find Yuka, Eri, and Ayumi running towards her.
" Oh hi. What's up?"
" Forget about that! Have you been asked to the dance yet?" Yuka said in earnest.
" Huh? Dance?"
" You haven't heard?" Eri said in shock.
" Well you can't blame her she has been ill a lot." said Ayumi
" So when is the dance?"
" Tomorrow!" they all said in unison.
" What?" "But I don't have a dress or anything! There's no way I can go! I'll miss my first dance!" Kagome thought to herself in dismay.
" Kagome!"
" Huh?" Kagome turned to see Hojo riding up on his bike.
" Oh sorry Kagome I just realized we have to go." Yuka said in a rushed voice.
" Yeah we got to go, good luck," said the others as they followed.
" Hey wait! Where are you…?"
" How are you feeling? You've been absent for awhile now." Kagome turned to face Hojo who was now level with her.
" Oh I'm feeling fine thanks."
" That's a relief. The last time I checked on you your grandfather said you had a bad case of sickle-cell anemia."
"Arghh." "Grandpa! Can't you use a normal disease for once?"
" Kagome?"
" Huh?"
" I was just wondering…if you were feeling well enough…and if you wanted to…if you would like to go to the dance with me."
" The dance? Um…"
" She would love go!"
" What?" Kagome turned to see Yuka suddenly appear behind her.
" Yes she's been dying to go, haven't you?" Eri said as she appeared just as suddenly as Yuka.
" I have?"
" Yeah she was hoping you would ask." Yuka said
" I was?"
" Really? Great I'll pick you up at seven okay? See ya!" And Hojo pedaled off on his bike before Kagome could say another word. Kagome turned angrily towards Yuka and Erie as Ayumi walked up.
" You do know I can answer him myself right?"
" We're just giving you a little helpful push that's all. Besides, Hojo's the perfect guy for you. Unless… you weren't planning on going to the dance with the delinquent were you?"
" He's not that bad but; no. He's not really the dance type."
" Exactly. Now let's go find you a dress."
" What? Hey!" And before Kagome could protest more, they were dragging her to the dress store.

Meanwhile, the sun was setting and a light breeze was blowing through the trees. It was the end of one of those peaceful, lazy kinds of days. But despite the lazy weather, someone was very anxious. Inuyasha was sitting near the Bone Eater's Well, his leg rising up and down in rhythmic irritation. " It's been two days already where is she? I didn't make her that mad did I?" Inuyasha's ears drooped slightly as he thought back to their recent argument. Now that he thought about it, he had been a little selfish. He knew that school was very important to her.
" Oh just go and apologize already." Inuyasha jumped in the air in shock and turned to see Shippo staring up at him.
" Arghh! Would you quit sneaking up on me like that?"
" If you're worried just go apologize. It's not like it'll hurt you."
" Who said I was worried? Besides, there's no way I'm apologizing! I didn't do anything!" Inuyasha turned from Shippo and folded his arms as he said quietly to himself. " I have nothing to apologize for."
" Okay. But if Kagome doesn't come back we know who to blame." Inuyasha's ears twitched slightly. " Maybe that will help push him a little."
It was Saturday morning. The morning sun was shining brightly through Kagome's window as she tried to decide what to do with her hair. She pulled it back into a ponytail and shook her head. She let it let it fall down and sighed. She glanced towards her new dress that was lying on the bed. It was a long, pink satin dress with thin straps and flower designs sewn into it with a sparkling white thread. Next to it were a matching shawl to drape over her shoulders and a pair of pink strap-on shoes. But Kagome wasn't thinking about this. " I wonder if he's still mad at me. Knowing Inuyasha, probably. Maybe I shouldn't go to the dance. I've probably delayed them enough already. But I promised Hojo I would go with him. Maybe I should call and say I'm not feeling well." Kagome sighed in exasperation. What should she do? Kagome slowly made her way down stairs to breakfast. She past the table and made her way towards the fridge for a glass of juice.
" Morning." Kagome said mechanically.
" Morning." Kagome stopped in her tracks. She knew that voice. She turned to see Inuyasha sitting at the table playing with Buyo.
" Inuyasha? What are you doing here?"
" What else? I came to get you. You were still sleeping when I got here though, so I waited."
" Oh. OK." Kagome said quietly.
" Something wrong?"
" Huh? Oh. No."
" You're not very good at lying."
" Really it's nothing."
" Just spit it out! What's wrong?"
" Well…I was wondering whether I could go to a dance tonight."
" Is that another test you have to take or something?"
" Oh no. It's just an activity that we're doing for fun."
" What! You mean you're bailing out on finding jewel shards for a stupid activity?" Inuyasha yelled angrily. Kagome gave a melancholy sigh.
" This is why I didn't say anything." and she turned back to her search for the juice. Inuyasha stared at Kagome in guilt. He hated seeing her like this.
" Well is this dance thing really that important to you?" he said in a softer tone.
" Well…I would like to go but…"
" Well if you want to go than go."
" But what about the…"
" Look! You said you wanted to go and I'm saying you can go so relax already!
" Is it really okay?"
" I told you already! It's fine!" Kagome stared in surprise for a moment and smiled.
" Thanks." Inuyasha was now blushing slightly.
" It's nothing, but after this dance thing we're leaving you got that?"
" Okay." Kagome said, still smiling.

The rest of the day passed quietly. Kagome's mother was helping Kagome get ready. Grandpa was trying once again to convince Sota to carry on the family tradition and become a shrine keeper and Inuyasha was staring transfixed at the strange bright box that was called the television. This continued until about six forty five where most of the family was sitting around the table for dinner. Grandpa was reading the newspaper, Kagome's mother was busy preparing dinner, Sota was playing with Buyo, and Inuyasha was sipping some tea.
" Well…I better get going." Kagome said as she stepped into the kitchen. Kagome was now in her dress, which sparkled and glimmered in the light of the kitchen. Her hair was pulled back into a bun of curled ringlets and delicately placed among her dark hair was a silver hair comb shaped like a cherry blossom.
" You look lovely dear!" her mother said smiling
" Yeah, you look great sis."
" Yes I agree. You look absolutely stunning Kagome." Grandpa said in agreement.
" Thanks." Inuyasha just stared in surprise as he brought the teacup to his mouth. But his mouth didn't seem to remember how to work and instead of drinking the tea he spilled it on himself. He didn't seem to notice though. There was then a ring at the doorbell.
" That would be him." Kagome said smiling as she made her way towards the door.
" Have fun dear!" her mother called behind her.
" Thanks! I will! Bye!" and with a small click of the door she was gone.
" She's growing up so fast" her mother said.
" It doesn't help that we hardly see her." Grandpa said with a sigh " She has so much responsibility. It would be good for her to have a break."
" Hey Inuyasha do want to play a video game?" Sota asked. But Inuyasha wasn't paying attention to their conversation.
" Him? Him? Him who?" Inuyasha asked himself quietly. Inuyasha rose from the table and walked off as he continued mumbling to himself.
" Is he okay?" Sota asked with a confused look on his face.
" Hmm. Perhaps he needs some dried beetle eyes from the Higurashi storehouse. They'll cure anything, demon or human. I'll have to go find them. There's a story to that you know. It all started when…"
" Gramps something tells me that's not going to help him." Sota said quietly in exasperation.

The room was packed jam with students and full of life as Kagome stood next to the refreshments table with Hojo. Hojo was animatedly telling Kagome about what had happened at school that week but it was falling on deaf ears. " I hope Inuyasha is okay with this. He seemed kind of funny before I left."
" Kagome? Are you feeling alright?"
" Huh?" Kagome turned from her thoughts and looked up at Hojo.
" If you're not feeling well you can tell me. I don't want you to suffer on my account."
` " That's not exactly…"
" Perhaps you should go sit down or maybe…"
" No really I'm all right. Don't worry. How about having a dance?"

Inuyasha was sitting on the front porch now, his leg rising and his fingers drumming in unison. " I shouldn't have let her go. How do I know this guy is trustworthy anyway? Who is he? Him? Him who?"
" Are you worried about Kagome?" Inuyasha jumped with a start as he turned to see Sota. " Is everyone sneaking up on me lately?" Inuyasha thought angrily.
" Could you please not do that?"
" Well you are worried right?"
" Worried? Of course I'm not worried! Why would I be worried?"
" I'm sure Kagome will be okay."
" I didn't ask you what you thought."
" They still haven't said it yet huh?"
" Well good night."
" Night." Inuyasha said quietly as he turned back to his fidgeting.
" Arghh! That's it! I don't care! I'm going to go check on her!" and Inuyasha dashed off without a second thought. He jumped from roof to roof as he followed Kagome's scent. In what hardly took anytime, he arrived at the school. Inuyasha carefully peered through the windows till he found the dance room.
" There she is. She seems to be all right. But maybe I should take a closer look." Inuyasha then snuck through a back door and into the school. He then found a door that lead to the dance and carefully peeked behind it. He saw that Kagome was now dancing slowly with Hojo. He couldn't understand but he suddenly felt rage boil through his blood. His face looked absolutely livid.
" Excuse me, but could you tell us where the refreshment table is?" Inuyasha turned angrily towards the couple behind him. Fire was blazing behind him.
" Umm…on second thought…we'll go find it ourselves." and they walked away as quickly as possible. Inuyasha then slowly began to make his way towards Kagome and Hojo.
Kagome and Hojo had finished dancing. "Kagome would you like me to get you anything? Punch?"
" Punch would nice thanks."
" Coming up."
" I wonder what Inuyasha's doing now? Oh! But I shouldn't be worried about him right now." Kagome then looked up to see if Hojo had come back yet. Kagome then stared in shock at what she saw. It wasn't the fact that Hojo was pouring out punch, but the fact that Inuyasha was hovering behind him, cracking his knuckles with a look of extreme loathing.
" Sit!!" Inuyasha was raising his fist gleefully until the rosary pulled him down.
" What did you say Kagome?"
" Huh?"
" You said sit."
" Oh…umm…I was saying…that…I don't think I'm feeling to well…and that maybe I should sit down for a minute if that's alright."
" Of course it's fine. Your health is important to me, you know that."
" Thank you." and with that Kagome began to make her way angrily towards the punch table. Inuyasha was still lying on the floor in pain. He raised his head and looked angrily up at Kagome.
" What the Hell was that for?"
" What do you mean what was that for?" Kagome said in an angry whisper. " You were about to slug the guy."
" I was just trying to make sure you were safe!"
" From what? He wasn't doing anything!"
" How do you know he wasn't planning to?"
" I've known him for years! He wouldn't do anything like that!" Kagome looked away from Inuyasha in frustration and saw that everyone was staring at them and whispering to one another.
" Is that her dad or something? He sure seems upset about her being with Hojo."
" Seems a bit young for her dad."
" Why is he wearing a costume?"
" We better get out of here." Kagome said hurriedly as she dragged Inuyasha out of the dance room with her. She didn't stop until they were out of the school and out on the grounds.
" I can take care of myself you know!"
" What? Who's the one that's always saving your butt?"
" Oh be quiet! You know you couldn't do a thing without me!"
" I don't need you! I'd be just fine without you!"
" Oh really? Well than I'll just stay here seeing as you don't need me! Arghh! And to think all this time I was concerned about you."
" Hmm? You were?"
" Well…" But Kagome never got to finish. She had felt a sudden pulse.
" There's a sacred jewel shard!"
" What? Where?"
" That way!" Kagome was pointing down a dark alleyway.
" Let's go!" And they were off with Kagome on Inuyasha's back. As they ran farther down the alley, they spotted two red eyes glowing in the distance.
" What is it?" Kagome asked in puzzlement.
" We'll find out soon enough." They soon found the red eyes belonged to a giant, ten-foot long red snake. The snake hissed at them in anger, as it's red eyes flashed.
"Keh! This should be easy enough. Kagome, where's the jewel shard?" Kagome looked up at the enormous hissing snake and looked for the glow of the jewel shard.
" There! In it's forehead!"
" Got it." and Inuyasha careful sat Kagome down as he pulled out his Tetsusiaga. Inuyasha lunged up into air and aimed his sword at the snake's head.
" Prepare to die!" but before Inuyasha could perform the finishing blow, the snake spit a large fireball in Kagome's direction.
" Kagome!" Inuyasha hurriedly dashed to Kagome's aid and moved her away from the fireball.
" Are you alright?"
" Yeah I'm fine." Kagome then looked down at her feet in horror.
" It ruined my dress!" Kagome then looked angrily up at the snake. " Do you have any idea how much I had to pay for it?"
" That's what your upset about?" Inuyasha mumbled. The snake was starting to slither its way towards them now, hissing more madly than ever.
"Here." Inuyasha said as he took off his kimono and put it over Kagome.
" But don't you need this?"
" I'll be fine." Inuyasha pulled Tetsusiaga out once more and aimed for its head.
" Just die quietly already!" The snake then hissed in pain as Inuyasha's sword split its body straight down the middle, blood oozing onto the concrete as the shard fell among what was left of the snake. Kagome slowly walked forward and picked up the shard. Its tainted and warped glow was now pure and clear.
" Guess we better head back." Inuyasha said as he sheathed his Tetsusiaga.
" Huh?" Kagome looked up in surprise.
" Well you wanted to go to that dance thing so bad I figured you wanted to go back."
" Oh." Kagome sat and pondered for a moment. " Actually, I think I'd like to go back home now."
" What? But I thought that's what you wanted!"
" It just wasn't as fun as I thought it would be."
" I'll never understand you." Inuyasha said in exasperation Kagome smiled and walked up to him.
" Let's go." and Kagome grabbed his arm and pulled him along with her. Inuyasha blushed slightly and smiled. Inuyasha put his arm protectively around her shoulder as Kagome rested her head comfortably on his shoulder. She then closed her eyes contentedly as they walked back to Kagome's house.
