Chapter 4- Lost in the Rain

"G..grandma?" Rin's vision was blurry. Squinting against the hospital's sterile, fluoerescent lights,
she looked about aimlessly for the old woman.

"It's alright, child. I'm right here." Assured that she was no longer alone, Rin lay back into the colorless
sheets of the bed. She tried to remember why she was here. It had been so ubrupt, so unexpected. One minute she'd been talking about school dances, and the next thing she knew, the girl was screaming in terror, engulfed in a fiery inferno of memories and heartbreak.

There was a polite knock on the door, and a tall demon clad in standard hospital attire entered the room. Bowing respectfully to Kaede, the doctor walked over to Rin's bed. "Feeling better, Ms. Mikoyami?" The girl nodded, allowing him to feel her forehead and inspect her eyes. Pulling back, he gave her a bright smile. "Well I think you're about ready to go home. The fainting spells stressed your body, but there was no permanent harm done. Now you just wait here while I have your grandmother sign some papers." Rin nodded, returning the youkai physician's fanged smile with a friendly smile of her own.

"Arigatu." Rin listened to the two adults exit, and slipped into a peaceful sleep.

"Mrs. Mikoyami?"

"Hai?"

The doctor sighed. "Your granddaughter's case is certainly a strange one. I can't appear to find anything
physically wrong with her, but during the time she was unconscious Rin's neurological activity sky-rocketed. This brain activity seems to be caused by a set of extremely vivid dreams."

Kaede frowned slightly. "Doctor, with all due respect, could mere nightmares really be the cause of Rin's
distress."

"Certainly. Often times when someone is struck by a tragedy, the memories are buried in their minds,
fully intact, until an event or disturbance of some kind causes them to resurface. When the victim, who
has carefully guarded these details from their own consciousness for so long, is suddenly imersed in
them, the reaction is often quite violent. Tell me Mrs. Mikoyami, are there any episodes in Rin's past
that might trigger such a reaction?"

The old woman was silent for a second, eyes fixed but unfocused on a large, waxy shrub in the corner.
Finally she spoke. "The girl's parents died about eight years ago. There was a horrible fire at the
criminal buearau where the worked. It was caused by an explosion just inside the main door, and it killed
everyone within a hundred meter radius. Rin's parents were caught in the blast, however she managed to get out of range before the fire got to her."

The doctor shook his head sadly. "Ah, yes. I've heard about the bombing of the Drug Traficking Prevention Agency. It was suposedly a terrorist act by one of the city's major drug dealers for raiding one too many of their shipments. That would explain why the exploding balloon triggered such a reaction in Rin. After witnessing such an event I would not be surprised that she is uncomfortable around too much
exposed flame."

Sighing sadly, Kaede nodded. Rin had spent so much time convincing herself that she was fine that she
hadn't even begun to face her fears. "What should I do to help her. After all, I want what is best for my
granddaughter."

"I think it would be best if she were to see a psyciatrist for awhile. Now I know you are a bit tight on
money Mrs. Higurashi, but perhaps the school counselor. I've heard that Mr. Schinintai is quite good."

Kaede fingered the prayer beads around her wrist thoughtfully. "Very well," she agreed. "I will call Ms.
Kikyou tonight and make arrangements. Thankyou for your services doctor." With a smile the physician
bowed before walking off down the hall. The old woman shook her head sadly. "Oh, my poor child!"

~~***~~***~~***~~

"RIN!" The girl braced herself as her three friends sprinted down the hall in her direction. Kagome
looked relieved, Sango concerned, and Ayame just plain scared.

"Oh my God are you alr....how long were you in the....do you feel light-hea..." All Rin could hear was a
muffled roar as the three girls tried to talk at once.

"Don't worry," she tried to reassure them. "I'm totally fine. It was nothing, really."

"Nothing! Are you kidding me? You passed out in the middle of Science!" Rin yelped in surprise as Koga
snuck up behind her. The burley ookami patted her shoulder comfortingly, nearly causing the human's
knees to give out.

"I'm serious," she moaned, but her friends would hear none of it. They walked down the hall, rattling off
different remedies and preventions for fainting and other types of illness. Even Koga had some
suggestions. Sesshoumaru walked several yards behind, listening to the group's conversation. Though
he'd never admit it, the youkai had been worried about the feisty ningen. He remembered again the
argument they'd had outside Naraku's classroom, then later when she had fallen into his arms. That had
been an accident on her part, but Sesshoumaru could still feel Rin's warm body against his own. It had
almost been....comforting? Then again, she'd been pretty out of it at the time. He wondered if the girl
even remembered.

As he neared Jakotsu's office, the youkai's thoughts turned toward his detention with Mr. Akuma. He growled in fustration. There was no way in hell he'd let that kumo get away with raping him again. He'd rip Naraku to pieces. Hell! He'd rip himself to pieces before he let anything like that happen. However despite his pride, Sesshoumaru just didn't see how he could manage to fend off the kumo. He remembered with acute shame how utterly helpless he'd been the last time. Naraku was far stronger than the inu and they both knew it.

"Ah, Mr. NoTaisho. Do come in!" Not bothering to reply Sesshoumaru took a seat opposite
Mr. Shichinintai. He stared coldly at the counselor, who continued to ask the usual questions.

"How are you?"

"...fine.."

"How's your family?"

"No more irritating than usual."

"And your schoolwork?"

"Uninspiring."

Jakotsu smiled grimly. This was looking to be another long hour and a half. The boy was absolutely
frigid. 'I should have gone into modeling when I had the chance,' he thought as he continued to pry into Sesshoumaru's walled off emotions. "Has anything been bothering you lately, perhaps with a classmate or sensei?"

The youkai's eye gave a nearly imperceptable twitch. Could Mr. Shichinintai know how close he really
was? Unable to completely shake the initial shock of Jakotsu's lucky guess, Sesshoumaru quickly tried to
pull himself together.

"..I..wha....no." Jakotsu cocked his head at the boy's surprisingly unsure answer, and was about to
continue when there was a curt rap on his door.

"What is it?" he asked, exasperated at the sudden disturbance. "I'm VERY busy and if you don't mind...oh, hello Ms. Kikyou.

The angular woman glared severely at both of them as she entered. Her beautiful, black hair was pulled
back in a neat bun, and her youthful appearance was offset b her rigid posture and precise way of
speaking. Sesshoumaru was always surprised at how much she looked like Kagome, though the two
sisters couldn't have been more different.

"Good morning, Mr. Shichinintai. May I speak to you for just a moment?"

"Certainly," Jakotsu said through gritted teeth. "Please make it quick though. I believe I may be making a
breakthrough in Mr. NoTaisho's case." Sesshoumaru bit his tongue to keep from snorting as the man said this, and even Ms. Kikyou's lips twitched slightly.

"Don't worry," the principal assured him. "It will take only seconds of your time." The two adults exited
the room, speaking in low voices as if to keep it from the young youkai. Sesshoumaru smirked slightly.
Did they really think that a demon like him wouldn't be able to hear their whispers. He was a DOG youkai
for God's sake.

"It's about Mikoyami Rin, the girl who fainted yesterday in Chemistry."

"Well, what about her?"

"The physicians believe that her illness is due to some sort of mental stress triggered by one of Mrs.
Kilala's demonstrations. The girl's grandmother has asked for her to be put into counseling to deal with
her....condition."

Jakotsu sounded somewhat indignant. "That's all well and good Ms. Kikyou, but as you can see I'm
very busy at this time. I simply cannot take on another student."

The woman's voice turned from a whisper to a hiss. "Mr. Shichinintai! I am the head of this school. Do you truly believe that I would have consented to giving you another charge without first checking your
schedule?"

"Well I..."

"You will start with her tomorrow. Pick the time yourself. Have I made myself clear?"

"Hai, Ms. Kikyou." Without waiting for a reply, Jakotsu stormed back into his office. Sesshoumaru watched
in amusement while the counselor sat down huffily in his chair. His rosy lips pursed angrily as he saw the
inu's flickering grin.

"That's enough for one day. You may leave." Sesshoumaru was only all too eager to comply. He left the
room, allowing Jakotsu to stew alone in his own thoughts. He walked down the halls towards his next
class, but stopped suddenly. An all too familiar scent was drifting towards him.

Naraku.

The kumo's eyes widened when he saw the youkai. Sesshoumaru looked more enticing than ever. It was
a rather hot day, and the boy's skirt hung to just above the knees. His hair was about six inches longer
than this, unconsciously giving the impression that the skirt was even shorter. Sesshoumaru's body
tensed as Naraku drew closer, his elegant legs and taunt chest quivering slightly. The kumo was becoming aroused just looking at him.

Sesshoumaru forced his feet to stumble forward. He couldn't show weakness, not now. Still, every step
became increasingly difficult as he neared Naraku. When they were just inches apart the kumo spoke.

"Mr. NoTaisho, what a surprise. What might you be doing outside of class?"

"..Mr. Shichinintai.." Sesshoumaru managed to keep his voice even. However it was much more difficult
to meet Mr. Akuma's lustful gaze.

"Really?" Naraku's lips pouted in mock dissapointment. "I thought we had something special, but if you're going to be fucking around with that bitch Jakotsu as well...."

The inu couldn't fully supress the anger building within him. Eyes bleeding red, he snapped his elongated fangs in agitation. "Save it, Akuma!"

Naraku's eyes narrowed until they were no more than burgundy slits. "Watch yourself. Remember
Sesshoumaru that your fate rests with me. Anything you say now will be paid for later." As he walked
away, the kumo cracked his knuckles to emphasize the point. "See you this Saturday, Mr. NoTaisho."

~~***~~***~~***~~

Rin stared dully at the countertop of the dreary cafe, running her slender fingers across its scratched
surface. Kaede had gone off to visit some friends for the evening so she was on her own. Despite the
tight budget, the girl's grandmother had given her some cash to go out for a 'special treat.' Rin sipped
her latte thankfully. What had started out as a warm, sunny day had taken a turn for the worst. Not only
had the temperature dropped, but clouds had quickly built up. The thunderheads twisted and boiled,
unable to decide if they should clear away or unleash torrents of rain.

Rin's thoughts turned to the past few days. What a nightmare! Not only had she been hospitalized,
but the whole school probably thought she was a nutcase. That and her sessions with Mr. Shichinintai
were going to be a collosal waste of time. She tried to be polite, but his annoying questions
were starting to get to her. Overall it had all been one big disaster. Well not completely. This meant she
didn't have to go to the dance. After seeing Rin's predicament, Kagome, Sango, and Ayame had decided
to let her have a break. They'd consolled themselves, saying that there would be plenty more to come.
Rin wasn't exactly looking forward to this. She hated dances. It wasn't just the date part of it. They were
so boring. Besides, she had more important things to do.

The girl had been thinking of Sesshoumaru a lot lately. Also, she'd noticed how Mr. Akuma always seemed to be eyeing him. This only fueled her suspicians about the kumo. Rin shuddered, remembering the blood running down Sess's thighs. If Naraku had really raped the seemingly cold-hearted inu, then he definately shouldn't be teaching. Still, Rin had to make sure. The girl's thoughts were interupted by the creaking of the cafe door. Rin's breath caught in her throat as she turned to see who had entered.

Sesshoumaru colapsed onto the stool, resting his head in his hands so that he was staring down at the
counter's flaking marble. The youkai's hair fell around his face like a luminous halo, and in the cafe's
dimness he looked almost like a discarded angel, lost in a world of grayness and sin. He wasn't wearing
his usual skirt. Instead, the youkai was clad in jeans and a t-shirt. He seemed strangly out of place in
these clothes. Then again maybe she was just used to the crossdressing version. Rin watched him
from the other end of the little coffee shop, wondering why he hadn't yet noticed her. She found herself
feeling quite sorry for him. Even though he was a total asshole Rin had to admit, at the moment
Sesshoumaru didn't look very intimidating, just tired.

"Excuse me?"

The inu forced himself to look up at the waitress. "What is it?"

"Don't you want to order?"

"Oh." Sesshoumaru hadn't even thought about that. He'd only come here to get away, away from his
father, Izayoi, wealth, Inuyasha, beauty, and of course his own shame. However this last one was quite
hard to escape. Over and over he could hear Naraku's laugh, Jakotsu's simpering sigh, and Mr. NoTaisho's enraged screams. He could see Izayoi's worried glances and his brother's hurt frowns every time he snapped at them, and most of all he could feel Rin's wide, curious eyes seeking to penetrate his soul.

"Just coffee." The waitress walked off, leaving him alone with the gathering darkness. Not that he minded
much. In fact rain was just what Sesshoumaru wanted. He prefered the cold. The youkai glanced around
the cafe. At first he had thought he was alone, but now he sensed someone else was there as well. For
a terrifying second he thought it was Naraku lurking in the shadows. However he calmed, realizing
sheepishly that the scent was human. One human to be specific. 'Rin!' How could he not have noticed?
She was barely twenty feet away! Perhaps it was because he was so tired that Sesshoumaru hadn't sensed her, or maybe the blow his father had delt him earlier had rattled the inu's sense of smell. He decided to ignore the girl, hoping she would leave and at the same time wishing he could once again hold her against his body.

Rin had been recognized, and she knew it. Despite herself the girl felt slightly put out. 'He could at least acknowledge me or something!' He was such a jerk. She couldn't stand people like that. Still a little voice rang out shrilly in the back of her mind. 'If you think he's really such a jerk, then why are you risking so much to help him?' Rin couldn't find an answer. 'Maybe I am a total nutcase,' she thought glumly.

"Miss? Miss, are you finished?" Rin smiled at the waitress.

"Yeah, thanks it was great."

The waitress grinned in return. "Well here's your bill. I'll be back in a minute." Rin blanched when she saw the cost. It couldn't have been that much! Still, numbers didn't lie. Praying that she had enough cash, the girl rumaged through her pockets. 'Oh no! Why me?'

Sesshoumaru watched out of the corner of his eye as Rin searched her coat. He hadn't noticed before
but that coat was pretty shabby. Same with her umbrella. In fact, the only thing that appeared new was the girl's uniform, which she still wore. The youkai thought guiltily of the large wad of money jammed into the bottom of his pocket. He turned to his coffee, trying to ignore these unwelcome emotions.

Much too soon, the waitress returned. Rin's cheeks turned bright red as she tried to explain herself to
the expectant woman.

"I'm..you see..umm..about the..."

"I'll be paying for her."

Both Rin and the waitress turned in astonishment. Sesshoumaru stood by impassivly, waiting for one of
them to reply.

"V-very well," the waitress said, still somewhat confused. "I didn't realize you two knew eachother." Without replying, Sesshoumaru shoved a handful of bills in her direction before quickly exiting the building. Rin stared after him for a few moments, not quite able to register what had just occured. As if suddenly breaking free of some magic spell, Rin dashed out the door. She turned about wildly, searching in vain for the youkai. He was nowhere to be seen. Her heart unexplainably heavy, the girl began the lonely walk back to her grandmother's shrine. Rin opened her battered umbrella. It had begun to rain, and though it was only a light drizzle, the turbulant clouds suggested it would soon get worse. She wondered vaguely if Sesshoumaru was getting wet. For some reason this made her want to cry.

Rin turned the corner and nearly cried out in relief. There he was, not 50 yards away. Not bothering to call out to the inu, she began to run down the sidewalk towards him.

Sesshoumaru shook his hair, trying to rid it of the clinging raindrops. The demon wasn't quite sure why he had helped the ningen. It had been a spur of the moment decision, really. Sesshoumaru growled softly at himself. 'Since when do I make spur of the moment decisions?' He continued to walk, breathing in deeply the smell of falling rain. It washed away all the scents of the city, leaving in behind a refreshing
clearness in the air. Sesshoumaru was suddenly aware of a presense beside him. It was her again.

Rin trudged along beside the youkai, making sure her umbrella covered them both. They went on like this for about a block before she finally broke the silence.

"I'll pay you back, you know. Don't think I won't."

Sesshoumaru frowned slightly. "You don't...have to."

"Yes I do!" Rin's voice trembled as she spoke. It was almost as if she would break into tears. Sesshoumaru gazed at her, a faintly confused look in his eyes.

"Why do you care that much? It doesn't matter to me."

Rin stopped suddenly.

"I guess I shouldn't be too surprised! NOTHING matters to someone like YOU! You think you can just go
around being rude and thoughtless because you're smart and rich and..."

"And WHAT?"

"NEVERMIND!" Rin didn't want to say it. Not so much because she cared what he would think. She just just didn't want to admit it to herself. '...beautiful..'

Sesshoumaru clenched his fists as all his pent up anger and fustration began to burst at the seams. "Do
you honestly think my life is THAT easy? So I'm rich, privilaged, whatever! I still have to watch my father
destroy whatever integrity our family ever had! I still have to listen to people call my DEAD MOTHER a filthy whore! I still have to......." The youkai stopped abruptly. He couldn't believe it. What was he doing
telling this girl such things?

"You still have to what?" Rin's voice was no longer filled with rage. Her vibrant eyes shone brightly against the grayness of the city around her. Sesshoumaru had to fight not to become completely lost in their lilac-filled depths.

"Nevermind."

Rin smiled sadly. She knew what it was like to experience loss. She had felt lost ever since her parents'
deaths. Despite his seemingly calm exterior, Sesshoumaru was lost as well. Rin studied his face, for the
first time seeing past the heartless mask. She had once thought his eyes blank and lifeless. Now she
realized that what she'd mistaken for empty space was actually filled with layer upon layer of swirling
emotions. On further inspection, she noticed a faint but rather large bruise on his right cheek.
Barely even realizing it, Rin pushed aside the damp curtain of his hair to caress the mark. Sesshoumaru
stiffened somewhat but did not draw back. Perhaps he sensed it too, that they were both lost. Hesitantly
he grasped her hand, pulling it away. Rin expected him to drop it, but the youkai held it gently, examining her willow-like fingers. As if realizing what he was doing Sesshoumaru hastily let go. Rin was surprised to see a nearly imperceptable blush creep across his cheeks. She laughed quietly.

That was when it happened. He smiled. It wasn't a large smile, or even a very straight one. In fact, it was
quite lopsided, but in it Rin saw the person that could have been, the kindness, compassion, and joy
deep within that soul that had never been allowed to reach the surface. In that smile Rin saw the one
person who could help her find herself, the one person she could love forever. Sure he was prickly,
cold, and every bit as lost as she was, but couldn't they make this work? Couldn't they help eachother
find themselves?

As if coming to the same conclusion, Sesshoumaru moved closer to her, the beautiful, spirited human
who seemed both happy and sad at the same time. He couldn't take his eyes off her. She was absolutely
radiant. She let out a small sigh, and he found himself desperatly wishing he could taste the warmth of
her lips. No. He couldn't do that! It was too rash, too spur of the...

Rin cried out in astonishment and bliss as the youkai's lips met her own. He pulled her to him, and she
kissed back, savoring the heat of his breath against her own. Sesshoumaru delved deeper into the kiss,
allowing his fangs to scrape gently along her lower lip. This tickling sensation caused Rin too moan. She
opened her mouth wider, demanding him to move in even deeper. He complied, running his tongue along her own. Several people stared as they drove by. They didn't care. Where there is love, there is life, and life is unconcerned of what others may think. They stayed this way for a long time, two broken angels finding comfort only in eachother. It was only when they finally broke away that these angels saw that it had ceased to rain.

Oh by the way, "Where there is love, there is life." is a quote by Ghandi. I saw it on a magnet and thought it fit in well.
