Chapter 13-Pitiful

The elder NoTaisho had never experienced something so strange as the priestess's healing touch. He could sense his strength returning, actually feel the bones and flesh knitting back into place. What unimaginable power to be stored in the body of such a young girl! He knew mikos who had trained for years and not become even half that strong.

Sesshoumaru too was dazzled by Rin's abilities. However something was troubling. With the strength of the girl's aura shouldn't any nearby youkai be able to sense it? It would lead any enemy straight towards them.

"RIN STOP!"

It was too late. Already footsteps could be heard coming towards them. All four braced themselves, but no one was prepared for what came next. Suddenly out of nowhere, two great tentacles arched out over their heads. With a splintering crash the apendages buried themselves in the opposite wall, leaving shards of steel and plaster in their wake.

"I've found you."

Naraku's voice made Sesshoumaru want to scream. Why couldn't he leave them alone? Why could he just roll over and die? The kumo was invincible. He just kept coming. No matter what kind of beating Naraku's body took, he somehow managed to return.

With a vicious smirk the spider youkai lunged towards the younger demon. "You are MINE boy!" Not wishing to leave Rin and his father exposed to the attack, Sesshoumaru planted his feet and waited for the fresh wave of pain to assault his body. It never came. Instead Naraku's miasmatic tornado of spiders' legs and pure hatred were diverted by a separate source, Bankotsu.

Even as the tentacles struck him full in the chest, the grief-torn ningen didn't utter a word. His body must have been as numb as his soul, for despite the obvious pain he was in, Rin saw that the man's eyes were dead. She wondered briefly what had happened. Then something truly unpleasant crawled into her mind. "Sesshoumaru." She grabbed the inu gently by the arm. "Where's Jakotsu?" The boy shook his head but did not reply.

Naraku's own eyes could now be seen as he advanced. They burned red and terrible through the shadows like two great sparks. Slowly the rest of the kumo's body emerged. Limbs, torso, and finally his face. He obviously hadn't recovered from the previous fight. There were cuts all over Naraku's body, and he absolutely reaked of blood. Still, the youkai was smiling. "I'm impressed, NoTaisho. I would have never expected someone your age to have survived such an attack. And you've even managed to find some help! Well done!" The elder inu youkai snarled and jerked to his feet, despising every bit of sarcasm dripping from his words. Bankotsu too had managed to get to his feet. He showed no signs of pain but no signs of fear either.

"So, the human is still alive?" Naraku laughed cruelly, eyeing the assassin as if he would be a particularly fun fly to squash.

Sesshoumaru was seized by a sudden rage. All his life he had despised weakness, but until very recently he had never really known what true weakness was. It wasn't physical. It was something deep inside, something woven into the character of both mortals and nonmortals alike. After fighting so many battles how could the kumo not see this as well? He thought of Bankotsu as pathetic simply because his abilities were somewhat lessened, but in reality it was Naraku who was weak. His attacks were fueled by nothing but lust, lust for flesh, lust for power, lust for something more to hate. The spider spit in the face of love. He laughed away the concepts of honor and pride. He told himself that they were meaningless, but that wasn't the real reason. In all actuality Naraku was afraid. He lived in terror that if he looked too far inside his heart he'd find nothing but blackness, so he pretended it wasn't there at all.

"You're pitiful."

The kumo stopped short, struck dumb by these simple words. He looked at Sesshoumaru as he'd looked at no one before. This boy standing before him was no longer an object his lust, but rather an object of his past. Naraku stared into his eyes and saw himself, years and years ago, farther back than he cared to remember. Back when he'd had a decision to make, to take the easy path or that which was right. The spider had chosen the former, not knowing or perhaps not caring where that deceptive road would take him, but Sesshoumaru, Sesshoumaru had chosen the harder road. He stood before the kumo not merely as the representation of his younger self but as the representation of the younger self he could have been. That was why Naraku both hated and loved Sesshoumaru. Because though he was flawed he had somehow risen above, though he'd been stepped on he still had strength enough to choose the right path.

It was true. He was pitiful.

"Ms. Kikyou?"

The angular woman turned to Izayoi, trying not to flinch upon seeing the hope in her eyes. "Hai?"

"Do...do you think they'll find them?"

"I can't see why not." Kikyou frowned. That wasn't exactly true. She could see a million reasons why Sesshoumaru and Rin might not be found. Still she thought it best not to tell Izayoi any of this. The woman seemed a bit too delicate to hear such things.

"You're lying. I can always tell." The mother's eyes seemed to see straight into Kikyou's heart. "You don't really believe they'll be found!"

"Its... its not that. I just think its going to take a great deal of determination to do it. I've known both Akuma and Takemaru for many years now." Kikyou frowned bitterly. "They are headstrong people who will go to great lengths to get what they desire. In Setsuna's case that happens to be you."

"And in Naraku's..." Izayoi turned away sharply, unable to think about the kumo without feeling ill."\

"It sounds strange, but I believe Mr. Akuma is after Sesshoumaru himself. I remember the day he brought your son in requesting detention. I haven't seen him that worked up in quite some time." Kikyou bit her lip, not wanting to let on to her darker fears that Naraku was more than a little interested in Sesshoumaru. She couldn't voice these thoughts, not in front of Izayoi.

"Sesshi's strong though. He'll be okay!"

Both women couldn't help but smile at Inuyasha's cheerful optimism. They were also a bit reassured. Something about the boy's silly ears and confident smile seemed to replenish their fading hope. "Hai," Izayoi murmured. "They are both strong."

After this all three drifted into silence. They'd been sitting in the police station waiting room for several hours now. It was late, well past midnight, and everyone was tired. Soon Izayoi's head began to droop. All was quiet but for the soft snores of the hanyou child. Kikyou watched the two out of the corner of her eye. She wasn't the type to be given over to such things, but at that late hour the woman's heart was somewhat softened. After all, what a charming picture. Mother and child bound together by hope and more importantly love. So immersed was she in her musings that it took a moment for Kikyou to hear the startled cries coming from the front desk of the precinct. It sounded as if someone were screaming.

Quietly so as not to wake the mother and child, Kikyou peered through the slightly cracked door. What she saw made even the hardened woman turn away in horror. Two huge demons stood in the foyer. They're talons were leaking with blood. Cops and office workers were literally strewn about everywhere, vital fluids and limbs torn and twisted in awkward angles. Glancing back and Izayoi at her son, the woman began to panic. What did these intruders want? Had they been sent by the ones who had kidnapped Rin and Sesshoumaru? She had a sinking feeling that she already knew. Takemaru had come back for his prize.

"M-Ms. Kikyou?"

The principal whipped around in surprise, only to meet Inuyasha's questioning gaze. She knelt down and put a finger to his lips. "Shhh... wake your mother up, and be quiet about it! We can't let them know we're here."

After tugging insistantly on his mother's clothes, the hanyou child finally managed to waken Izayoi.

"I-Inu? What's wro..."

"Mama, shhhhhhh." Inuyasha put a finger to his lips and pointed to Kikyou, who was still watching the youkai mercenaries outside. "Something's outside."

Mrs. NoTaisho turned a peculiar shade of green and turned to Kikyou. 'Who is it?' she mouthed. Kikyou motioned for her to come closer. Peering through the doorway, Izayoi had to try very hard to conceal a muffled gasp. "C-can't they smell us?"

"I don't think so. They look like a primitive kind of demon to me, probably unable to distinguish us from all that blood."

"I see you've managed to kill just about everything in the vicinity that breathes, but have you found her yet?"

The brutish youkai turned to the man who had appeared in the doorway just as Izayoi let out a terrified scream.

"Boss! We've found her!" A pair of hands wrapped around her neck, and the woman found herself looking into a gaze so lifeless it made her trembling body go still with shock. They reminded her of her stepson in a way, though Sesshoumaru's gaze wasn't near as gone as that of this demon. "Juromaru, you idiot! Don't kill her! That's the one Boss is looking for!" This came from the weird, mantis-shaped thing perched on his shoulder. It was also pale, with scyth-like arms and some of the cruelest eyes Izayoi had ever seen. They were so nasty they made his face, which was the only human thing about him, even more horrible.

Without a word Juromaru's grip on the woman's throat slackened. Instead he grasped her wrists, holding her against him as she struggled. A deadly smirk on his lips, the other turned his attention to Kikyou and Inuyasha. "And who are these little lovelies, hmm?"

"Bastard!" Glowing tendrils of light erupted from Kikyou's fingertips, flying across the room and crackling as they struck the two purple-haired youkai. The insect one screamed, but the larger of the two remained silent. Not waiting for either to recover the unveiled priestess lunged at them, bowling over not only Juromaru but Izayoi as well. "Hurry Izayoi! Take Inuyasha and run!" Helping the woman to her feet, Kikyou practically shoved her towards the door.

"B-but what about..."

"Just go!"

With a finaly glance at the proud, headstrong, and spectacularly brave principal of Sakura Springs Izayoi gathered the boy in her arms and ran...

...straight into Takemaru.
