Chapter 1

She'd spent so many years around bloodshed, both human and demon alike. She hadn't been sure if she had gotten used to it. Now she was sure that she couldn't have possibly been.

The killing had always been so impersonal. She had never known any of those that died, either by Inuyasha's hands or by another demon's. Human or demon, her pain for those killed by evil's hand never truly broke through to her. Maybe that was her own subconscious way of saving herself from more agony than needed, in order to continue her quest.

Now, she wished she hadn't kept herself from even a fraction of that hurt. Now, there was nothing to brace her for the blow that had hit her. Then again, she had never really expected this to happen. This was supposed to be a fairytale. Her fairytale. Though incredibly complex, was still hers and they no longer existed in her time.

This story was supposed to have a happy ending that included her and Inuyasha being together. He should have been smiling at her, content that she was holding him so.

He was not supposed to have his face twisted into a painful grimace that was slowly being eased away, with empty, distant eyes. His body should not feel cold. He should be yelling at her to stop crying, not passively accepting it. Most of all, his haori that was naturally red, should not be stained with the darker crimson of his own blood.

A few strands of his silvery hair were carried by the wind and fell over his face like a burial shroud. She moved them away and when she felt his cold cheek, a sob rose in her throat, threatening to choke her. She met her forehead to his as she let loose a terrible sob. Kagome shut her eyes while larger teardrops fell down her face, leaving tracks that would always scar her.

It wasn't supposed to be like this. Naraku was meant to die, not Inuyasha. Naraku was not meant to have the Jewel of Four Souls, but he did. And Inuyasha, her Inuyasha, was dead by their enemy's hand.

Kagome forced herself to open her eyes and looked at the void set into his once fiery golden eyes before closing them for him. Leaning forward, she placed a bitter kiss on his icy temple. She then stood and looked about her. It was nothing but death that surrounded her. The trees stood like shades of their former selves. There was no sign of vegetation for as far as the eye could see and nothing would continue to grow as long as Naraku's poisonous fog lingered here.

She alone had been the only weapon against the poisonous miasma, purifying a small area around her. Being the reincarnation of a powerful priestess did have it's advantages, but despite her efforts, be it her Spirit Arrow or her own natural purifying powers, they only seemed to delay the inevitable for a short while. Naraku had still taken the few shards from her in order to complete the Jewel of Four Souls; and she had been helpless to stop it.

He had bent her to his will like a lead pipe. Those moments lasted an eternity and yet went by too quickly. She had lost her free will for a fraction of time while under his control. She had handed over the shards to him herself and in doing so, signing the death warrant for her comrades. Her eyes fell on Inuyasha again on the ground.

After she had regained her body, she forced herself not to look at Inuyasha, for fear of the betrayal that would burn there in his eyes. Fighting another fit of racking sobs, she turned away from him, intent on finding some comfort any where; be it here, or home in the present, but all she seemed to find as she turned was more death.

Miroku lay motionless on the ground not far away; his string of protective beads broken and scattered. More tears fell down her face as she thought of all of them. Shippou, who had only been a child, had been killed as well. He had stayed beside her until he could no longer. His Fox Fire had been deflected by Kanna's Mirror and had struck him. Afterward, Kanna had captured his soul. When Inuyasha had destroyed the demon-child and her mirror, Shippou's soul merely ascended to the afterlife.

Her tears began to blind her until everything became a blissful blur. Kirara was gone, as was her Mistress. The fire cat had been infected with the poisonous mist borne from Naraku and with his increased power from the Jewel, the poison not only worked more quickly, but also became like a catalyst for decay.

Sango was nowhere to be found. Kagome was almost thankful that she couldn't see her now, lying still and silent like the others.

" Do you wonder about her?" A smooth deep voice washed over her ears like poisoned honey.

She looked around her, wiping away her eyes in order to see, but he was not found. " I will not speak to a murderer," She seethed, but her voice still quivered with sadness. Anger surged through her as bitterly as the tears that ran from her eyes and down her ivory face. She fisted her hands and before long, she was quaking.

" Do you miss them?"

Her anger broke and her sadness flooded her again. Tears poured down her face again in torrents and she sank down to her hands and knees in anguish. " Why?" she whimpered softly, almost inaudibly.

" Each of them was in my way. They blocked the road that led to my destiny; to become what I have become."

She said nothing, but thoughts beyond words could reach him fairly easily. What now? She wondered.

" I have what I want now; the Jewel is no more."

She heard his voice close by. Kagome looked up and saw Naraku standing on a dusty knoll not far away. His familiar baboon pelt was gone; he needed no disguise now.

" That isn't possible!" she cried out, pushing some of her anger and sadness out with her words," The Jewel will only disappear if an unselfish wish is made upon it!"

He took slow, lazy steps towards her. The faint moonlight shone from behind him, giving him an ethereal silver halo. " The wish that was made was not for myself. I wished for the many demons inside of me. I wanted them to become one whole demon. That demon itself devoured what remained of Onigumo. That same demon…he and I are now one and the same."

He became closer to her, almost nearing touch. She looked up at him in rage and anguish. A faint, lazy smile worked its way onto the youthful face of what once was Kagewaki. " You have suffered much," he said, but there was not pity in his tone, only the same smooth, velvety voice as always. " And for it, I will grant you a gift."

Kagome's brow creased at his words and curiosity successfully infected her. " What do you want?" she asked him, her voice shaking.

Naraku said nothing at first, but he looked down at her with a faint smile and began to circle her at a languid pace. She shut her eyes, trying to forget the shiver that his piercing eyes caused. " This is a gift. To ease whatever pain has been caused. Because I am now the complete Naraku, my power has exceeded even my own expectations. I thank you for that and wish to return the favor. I will revive one of your fallen comrades, but only one."

Her face changed from curiosity, confusion and anger to only weariness and sadness. Who would she pick if only one? Who could she pick if only one? Shippou had been only a child. Miroku's life-long quest had been failed. Sango had been Kagome's only female companion. Then there was, of course, Inuyasha, whom she had never confessed any of her feelings for.

Kagome had always had an understanding for the relationship between Kikyo and Inuyasha, but now that understanding ran even deeper; Kagome had lost the one person she loved most. The remorse and thoughts of moments that would never be hit her and hopelessness seemed to take a firm grasp on her; but there was Naraku's offer…

Kagome bowed her head and leaned forward so as to forget that her enemy stood beside her. The enemy had won the War and this was the aftermath. And as so, she seemed very interested that he had not laid a finger on her yet. It seemed that he did not wish her harm. Then again, Naraku had always been unpredictable.

This "gift" was a trick. It had to be. It seemed the only logical explanation, with Naraku being as evil as he was. Naraku was laying a trap for her to fall into so that he could gain something, but what?

The only safe answer was no. And if he killed her then and there, so be it.

" No, I do not accept. I will not choose."

She looked up at him and glared with everything she had left. He was standing in front of her now, still and leering down at her with crimson eyes. Naraku seemed only to not have heard her and purposely ignored her answer; it had obviously been one he did not like very much. She dug her nails into the dry earth beneath her in aggravation and clenched her teeth as he began to circle her again. This time she did not shiver from his gaze and she did not bow over in sadness. " I suggest the Monk, of all choices," he said, as though she hadn't spoken at all.

Her eyes narrowed and she glared daggers into the dead ground. She said nothing, but she hadn't needed to speak.

" I am able to revive the dead, but if the body is…unstable, the results may be very distasteful," Kagome continued her silence as he continued to explain while staring at her as she knelt in the dusty earth. " The kitsune was burned. The Demon Slayer also, as I'm sure her landing was not very soft."

She watched him stop in front of her and she looked up at him, emotion burning in her eyes. He stared back unwavering. He wanted her to ask, she knew; the question burned inside of her. She sucked in a small breath between her lips when a lump began at the back of her throat. " Inuyasha? Is it…possible?" Her voice sounded much more feeble than she wanted it to be.

" Inuyasha bled to death. His body can be repaired quite easily, but…"

Kagome cocked an eyebrow from more than just involuntary curiosity, waiting for him to continue. He did so, although he frowned just slightly. " Inuyasha is a half blooded demon, but nevertheless, when he died his soul was sent to Hell. It seems quite like poetic justice for Kikyo to receive her last wish."

His smooth lips twisted into a cruel smile. Kagome was struck with memories of how Kikyo had finally been destroyed and returned to the afterlife that she belonged to. Naraku had done the act, feeding Inuyasha's immense hatred for their enemy. Now Naraku was only her enemy.

" Now they suffer together in fire and ash," he sneered, " If Inuyasha were to be brought back to the life, his soul will have been shattered. He will loose his sense, a breathing shadow of his former self. It will torture you every second to watch him live as the dead."

Tears were now falling out of her eyes, down her cheeks and onto the dry, cracked ground. She no longer sat on her knees, but instead sat with her legs at her side. Her head dipped low, but not to hide from Naraku. She didn't care if he saw her cry like this. Her hope was shattered. She finally made a sound as a sob rose in her throat and caused her to quake.

Naraku looked down at her as she wept, his face betraying no tangible emotion. He moved and stood behind her, watching her. Before long, he reached out his hand and combed his claws through her hair. He watched her cry, but did not speak.

Moments passed and she began to cease her crying so that only a few lingering tears continued to leak out from the corners of her eyes. Kagome narrowed her eyes, though he wasn't in her line of vision so as to see. It only marred her already blurred vision. " Choose the Monk," he said to her.

He withdrew his hand, but not before purposely dragging it across the side of her neck. She shivered again involuntarily. The claw had nicked her, leaving a small painful mark that began to bleed modestly. She whimpered very softly, but he had heard her regardless. She turned around, effectively losing her balance and landing on her behind. Her hands kept her from hitting the hard ground completely. Since when had she been so clumsy? She guessed that perhaps Naraku might have done something, but she wasn't sure."

" The Demon Slayer and the Fox child will not live again. The Monk was poisoned. Choose the Monk."

Emotions welled up at the nonchalant mention of her deceased companions and before she could stop herself, she yelled out, "No!"

His eyes narrowed for a fraction of a second. It passed so quickly, she wasn't sure if her mind had been playing with her or not. " Then what will you do? You do not seem to have very many options."

" I can leave, right now."

He did not say anything at first. His eyes watched her for a moment as she lay in the dirt. " Then go. My offer will only last so long. You will know when time is running out and I will send for you."

Confused and fearful, Kagome hurried to her feet and turned to run as fast as possible towards the only escape left; the Bone Eater's Well.
