Episode 20: “Heart of the Dark Beast - Part 1”
“Dark Beast… one who awoke from 3000 years of long imprisonment, what is it after? What does it want? It bears the title Ruin-Bringer, why? What did it do to deserve a title like that and why is he acting nothing like it? What does it think or what does the heart of the dark beast feel as it walks the lonely path in our world?” - Unknown
*The feudal era, about 4 days away from Kaede's village*
(Notice, it's morning now from where chapter 19 ended)
Sesshoumaru had been travelling all day towards his whelp of a brothers village, ever since sensing the tremendous new power there he had been curious as to who or what could produce a aura like that…
Of course, if whoever or whatever the owner if this power was, if it proved to be a threat he would be sure to crush it, no strange newcomer causes trouble in his domain and gets away with it unharmed… especially when whoever this newcomer was had attacked his whelp of a brother.
He couldn't care less about what happens to his half breed brother but there was one thing he would not accept: Someone else killing him before he himself could, if someone was going to kill Inuyasha, it would be Sesshoumaru himself who would do it. Since even though he was only a hanyou, Sesshoumaru had to give him some recognition for accomplishing all he has accomplished: The defeat of Ryuukotsusei, mastering of Tetsusaiga, holding his own against him… then lastly the defeat of that vile creature, Naraku.
So as a way of showing his recognition to him, he would kill him personally when the time comes, so if someone else tried to beat him to it, his wrath would be swift and lethal.
Of course, Sesshoumaru was no fool like his half brother was, instead of charging right against this newcomer, he would first need to gather whatever information there was about it, so first he went to meet one of the oldest Youkai in these lands: The tree Youkai from whose bark Tetsusaigas scabbard had been made out of. (That is the same character from who Sesshoumaru learned about Inuyasha's ability to transform into a full demon and about the real purpose of Inuyasha having the Tetsusaiga, remember? I don't know his name though…)
Now he was walking towards the tree and as he neared it, he was thinking: `Hmm… this Sesshoumaru feels strange, what is this feeling? The memory about that new aura and energy makes this Sesshoumaru's back and instincts tingle with something… hmm… this is a completely new, unfamiliar feeling… interesting.' Then the tree Youkai sensed his presence and when it's face formed it spoke: “Ahh… lord Sesshoumaru, it has been over 4 years since you last came here. What brings you here today? It must be urgent since you have sought out this old tree's wisdom.” Sesshoumaru's face remained in the same neutral expression as he answered: “Yes, old one, it is most urgent… there is a new power in these lands, it appeared yesterday near a small village where that whelp is. Yet, this Sesshoumaru does not know what it is, the aura is completely unknown to this Sesshoumaru's memory and senses. It is ancient, yet powerful and dark… and it holds no vile feeling or stench in it, it makes this Sesshoumaru curious.”
The old tree closed it's eyes for a moment before answering: “Lord Sesshoumaru, that power which you speak of… what will you do when you find it's source?” He looked at the old tree with a raised eyebrow and remained silent, the tree knew the answer so instead said: “Lord Sesshoumaru, the source of this power comes from a single living being, a being more ancient than I or any Youkai I am aware in these lands… nay, maybe in the entire world. This beings name is forbidden among us old ones, it is said that when this being awakens, it will bring with it the ultimate ruin, the ruin that will shatter the balance of our world…”
“I cannot say anymore than this, I am sorry my lord but it is forbidden to us… I made a vow never to utter his name or his goal long before I swore allegiance with your father, so I apologise deeply for not being able to provide anymore than this.” The tree finished with a sigh… then added quickly: “My lord, heed this warning: If you fight this being… you will die.”
Sesshoumaru looked the at tree for a moment, it's words only made him more and more curios about this newcomer, more ancient than this tree was? More powerful than anyone or anything he has seen before? Then lastly, he would kill this Sesshoumaru if they fought? That was preposterous, there was no one on this land or earth that could defeat the lord of the western lands, no one.
He did understand though why this old tree wouldn't talk about this being any further, though he was displeased that this tree showed more fear to whoever it had made that vow to… so there was someone else behind this tree that could make this tree fear it more than him, the great Sesshoumaru?
So instead he asked: “Old one, answer this then: What does this being look like and what is the aura it has all about?” The old tree thought again for a moment before answering: “I can only answer the first one my lord, the being is in a form of a young man, human looking, he has silver/Grey hair and wears clothes not from these lands, he wields an enormous sword called `Mormegail', he has a violet coloured star mark underneath one of his eyes and his eyes are cold, amber gold coloured. I cannot answer the second question because that too is forbidden for us old ones to talk about.” With that, Sesshoumaru only remained silent for a long while before he merely nodded and began to walk away, leaving the tree thinking: `My lord… it is true, if you fight against him, he will kill you. You maybe stronger than your brother but even if you are more powerful and more skilled, you will not have a hope of victory against him… the ruin-bringer, ultimate devil… after 3000 years, the day has come that you once again walk the earth, the day that was never meant to be and was always impossible to become a reality, yet now it has happened… it was lucky for us that the Shikon no Tama was shattered before his awakening, as long as that jewel is not completed…' It's thoughts trailed off as it returned into It's resting position, falling asleep once again.
Sesshoumaru was now more than eager and interested to meet this… `unspoken' one, he must be strong to have this sort of an impact on one of the most ancient Youkai in these lands, this would truly be interesting… though the trees warning did bother him, he would die? That was not possible, no matter who the opponent was.
Without knowing it though, somewhere in the depths of his basic instincts, something told him to heed the old ones words, why? There was nothing he couldn't defeat, nothing that could match him in strength… yet, try as he might, the more he thought about the encounter with this `unspoken' one the more the new and unknown feeling in his gut grew… he was deeply puzzled by it, was it excitement…? Or perhaps… fear? Ridiculous, there was nothing he could fear.
*Elsewhere in the Feudal Era*
Kasaraki was walking down the small road, tossing a small pouch of money on his palm up and down while whistling some random music he remembered. The money he had was taken from a small group of bandits he'd encountered earlier that morning, he'd left that hot spring and walked the whole night, well occasionally he did jump and leap forward to cover more ground but mostly he'd walked and was now a very nice distance away from that forest.
The bandits he'd encountered had wanted whatever money he had and naturally he had none… but from the fine way he was dressed they didn't believe him so they attacked him, they where pretty much no challenge at all, all he really had to do was stare at them in the eyes and they were already shitting themselves completely… but just to get his point across, he killed the first one that attacked him so fast that they didn't even see him draw that massive blade from his back, the poor bandit never knew what hit him before he was sliced in half from his head to his crotch.
Kasaraki had then struck his blade on the ground, making it tremble enough so that they lost their balance and fell onto they're asses before he asked: “So… what were you saying about money?” To that, they simply responded while obviously pissing in their pants and leaving their pouches behind: “Uhh… we were just saying that if you don't have then here, have some and have a nice trip!” And with that, they ran like the hounds of hell were on their tail… which wasn't too far from the truth either, hehehe.
The sun was starting to be pretty high now and still he had no bloody idea where he was… he knew what time period it was now though, if you are wondering how he knew, that will be explained later in the story and it's very important too, you could say it's one of the key things about the whole answer to his existence.
As he kept walking the road, he arrived at a crossroad: To his left was a road taking him up the mountain forest route while the left one went to some open plains… he briefly stopped to think: `Hmmm… to roads, which one to take, the left one or the right one? The plains might be good to walk since the wind breezes there rather nicely but on the other hand, mountain forestry… hmm, damn, this is a tricky choice… well, if I can't decide then let's see what my partner thinks about it.'
With that, he pulled Mormegail from the straps behind him and threw it spinning into the air, it was spinning like propeller and he waited until it landed. As it hit the ground, the tip of it's edge pointed at the path to his right, the one that lead to the mountains. Kasaraki then kneeled and recovered his partner, or his sword to be accurate and said to it while smirking: “So, you want to take the scenic route today, eh partner? Oh well, I was thinking about that too since we've already walked through some open plains… well, that's that then.” He could feel the blade vibrating softly, as if chuckling or something.
As he walked the mountain path up, he noticed through the scents of the air that the forestry was not near the road but instead a lot more further up, so it would take a while before he would arrive there, that was okay with him though… since he was thinking yet again: `The warring states… the last known era of where the Shikon no Tama was seen, this was also the final era when people were familiar with magic and such as well, which means that this is my last chance at completing what I began 3000 years ago… The pieces of the puzzle are hitting their places alright but there are some elements that confuse me to no end, like how do I know that girl and that hanyou? Kagome… she is such a pure spirit, she could pass for an angel any time… then that hanyou, Inuyasha, how odd… a hanyou of such strength is allowed to live? After what happened 3000 years ago, it would be reasonable to think that `they' would know better than to allow a hanyou to roam unchecked like this…'
`Then again, it could have something to do with the Shikon no Tama being shattered and my awakening… yes, that must be it… `they' made another mistake again it seems and are now trying to correct it with this gamble, since those two had the ability… but how did they have it? I thought it there were only two people besides myself who had it? What is going on…? Then again, if they wouldn't have had it, I wouldn't be free either, so scratch that thought for now.'
`That girl also had the almost complete Shikon no Tama… and it was pure to boot! Which means that the jewel has chosen her to restore it, yet why would it allow itself to be shattered in the first place? It has something to do with both Kagome and Inuyasha, what is it though… that I don't know. Then, what troubles me the most is the fight between myself and Inuyasha, during that whole fight I felt such an immense urge to kill him for some reason and the fact that even though I was losing control that girl somehow managed to calm me down… what is it about those two that makes me feel like this? Well, I don't know about that but this is something I'm certain of: To get answers, I must fight him again, I must fight Inuyasha to the finish and when I do that, I will have my answers.'
After thinking about that, he stopped for a moment and looked at the scenery that opened before him, it made him feel at ease once again… from where he stood, he could see a large portion of the land below him, the sun high in the sky and clouds moving here and there, the gentle breeze of the wind blowing against his face… the scents that drifted along with it were enough to make him feel like he was floating. This was something he could never get enough of: The purity of nature… nothing manmade, nothing artificial, just simply nature in it's own pure state.
He couldn't understand, humans and Youkai lived in such a beautiful world and yet they wanted to ruin it… but, despite that, both humans and Youkai were a part of the world, good or bad so it was not his right to judge who was worthy of existing and who was not… it was up to the beings who lived here and for the great earth to decide, he himself was just someone whose purpose was to destroy the [eternal cycle], a task he failed at the last moment due to his friends betrayal 3000 years ago.
That thought still made him clench his fists in anger… he just couldn't understand why, why would his friends betray him at the last moment like that?!
He could feel his battle ki and aura flare up along with his own anger, so he quickly clenched his teeth and willed it to calm down… which was hard since 3000 years of being sealed had wreaked havoc on his mental state and self control, so it would take a lot longer than this before his mind, body, heart and state of feelings could work in perfect harmony again, so until then he had to be careful about his feelings, if one takes over too much then he might snap and… no, he could not allow himself to lose control, no matter.
He had not noticed but during his entire thinking session he had been walking forward up the road but his trance was broken when he heard a loud barking sound right in front of him.
His eyes snapped at his feet and what he saw made his eyebrow rise in curiosity: There was a small dog, a puppy in front of his feet, barking at him. This made him smirk, he could make any human or Youkai fear him by simply staring at them in the eyes but when it came to little puppies then he just couldn't stop from smirking… dogs were such pure creatures, they simply did what their instincts told them to do and judging from the sound of this ones barking, it wasn't barking at him out of hatred but simply because it was a puppy and he was a stranger… nothing more.
Kasaraki then slowly kneeled in front of the little dog, his smirk never leaving his face as the puppy kept barking at him but stopped the instant his arms touched it's forehead and lightly petted it there, his eyes glowed for a moment and with that the little puppy closed it's eyes and began to pant instead, it's tail swishing from one side to another.
Kasaraki moved his hand to begin rubbing the little doggy behind it's ears, which made it growl lowly from satisfaction, he then talked to it: “I'm no threat little one, I am merely just passing through… but, are you alone? Do you have a home?” The puppy then backed away slowly and made a happy bark before panting again, Kasaraki just smiled and said: “Well, you shouldn't make them worry, they are probably looking for you, where are they right now?”
He got his answer as the puppy yipped before running up the road a little before stopping, turning back to look at him with it's tail swishing again and barking again. He simply cocked an eyebrow before asking it: “Are you telling me to follow you?” It just barked in reply and he said with a smile: “Lead the way then, little one.” And with that, he began to follow the puppy up the road, his smile never leaving his face… humans and Youkai fear him, yet little doggies like that don't… ironic, he was a being that Youkai fear, yet little animals love, how much more ironic can it get?
After a long moment of walking, he arrived in front of a building, a small tee house (Like a coffee shop in the modern ear) was built at the cliff wall side of the road… which means that a lot of travellers come through here and this was a stop point to relax… heh, good thing he got that money from those bandits because he was dying to eat something again, he ate a rabbit yes but this was different, the aromas from this place were tempting and he wanted to see how some other foods tasted.
When he was about to walked inside the tee house, he heard two child's voices shouting: “Juno!” Followed by happy barking which he had become familiar with for the past moments… so, this was where that little mutt lived in and these people were the owners.
Kasaraki was smiling and was about to walk in but he quickly stepped aside as two children, a 9 year old boy and a 7 year old girl ran out of the tee house with a small yipping creature in front of them… he chuckled for a moment, kids… when he looked at them and the two of them playing with the little puppy, it making happy barks and the kids were laughing, this was such an innocent picture, it made him feel warm but then before he could stop it, a flashback was suddenly played in front of his eyes, everything around him going white and the sounds dimming away into a silent void…
*Flashback, unknown time period*
(Dialogue only)
Kasaraki: “Mother… can I go outside to play with the others?”
Mother: “No, Kasaraki… you can't go outside.”
Kasaraki: “But why!? Why can't I go play with everyone?! I don't want to be alone here all the time… (Small break) It's… it's because… I'm, `different' than others isn't it? What I've heard some of fathers guests say about me, that I'm a…”
Mother (hugs him): “I'm so sorry my son… I don't want you to be alone either but… this is just the way things are.”
Kasaraki: “But why? Why are things like the way they are? Why are you hurt all the time? Why do I have to be alone…?”
Mother: “Kasaraki… it is this way because the gods have seen it this way, they…”
Kasaraki (Breaks free and runs away): `Gods… why are you letting my mother suffer like this? What did she do to offend you…? What did I do to for all this to happen…? Why are you letting this go on?'
*End Flashback*
When it ended, Kasaraki noticed he was covering his eyes with his palm and could feel hot, lone and small tears in his eyes… damn, he really couldn't control them at all could he? His feelings that is… but, he couldn't help it! That memory always stung no matter how hard he had tried in the past to control it!
He wasn't aware that someone was watching him, he just thought: `Damn `them'! Sons of butt fucked whores… none of this means anything to them, those two children and that puppy, they mean nothing to them, their lives and futures are nothing to them… damn it.' He was snapped out of his reverie when he heard someone ask: “Excuse me sir but are you alright?”
He quickly wiped his tears off and turned to the source of the voice, what he saw made his eyes widen slightly from surprise… in front of him stood a woman, about 25-27 years old, green eyes, neck long dark brown hair and dressed in a kimono with a apron, which was a bit dirty, she had the same scent as the children outside and her natural scent was also quite smooth and nice… but, as he looked into her eyes, he could see something in them that bothered him… what it was, he couldn't put his finger on it, yet. `Damn… she's beautiful alright.' Were his thoughts before he could control them, making him shake his head before replying: “Yes, sorry about that… just spaced out for a moment.”
Then he thought right after finishing his sentence: `But, even if the lives of these people mean nothing to `them', it matters to me… this world, the life in it and everyone else in it, I will free them from the eternal cycle, no matter what the cost may be.'
To Be Continued…

[Eternal cycle]: The mysterious thing Kasaraki wants to stop/destroy, what it is and what it does… remains a mystery but one thing is certain, it is something far greater than our minds can comprehend.
