“Inuyasha, you need to put the boy down, ok?” Kagome said, keeping her voice to a calm soft crone. “It's over, everybody's safe. Come back to us Inuyasha. Come back to me.”
A pair of red eyes gleamed out at the miko, trying to make sense of her words. He had not gone anywhere; in face he was right here, doing his one responsibility. Protecting, making sure that she was safe. In his arms was the limp body of a still boy, a pup from the village she lived in. The scent of the boy's blood leaking from a cut on his ribs drove his nose wild, making his own blood pump hot and heavy through his veins.
The attack had come from nowhere, quite literally. At sunset, of the night of a new moon, a group of slinking youkai and human bandits came into the village. Killing the guards, they avoided Kaede's hut and the surrounding two to attack the opposite end. Miroku had only heard the screams and panicked calls for help when he had went to fetch water for Kagome. Knowing that Inuyasha was almost useless on his human nights, he had went back to his own hut to alert Sango and Kagome, telling Inuyasha to stay put.
Of course he hadn't listened. He had grabbed Tetsusaiga, even though it wouldn't transform on his human night, and followed them ten seconds after they had left.
The village had been in ruins. Several youkai, weasels, one boar, and several rats, were terrorizing villagers as they tried to put out fires that the human bandits had started. Many ended up in pieces, bits of gore disappearing down youkai mouths.
When one of the youkai, an unidentifiable mess of fur and teeth, had grabbed up a little boy, something snapped in Inuyasha's mind. No one knew how or even that he could do it, but one second a silver-haired purple-striped full-blooded youkai stood in the spot of the human hanyou.
Amazingly, he didn't touch any of the surviving villagers, tearing into bandits and throwing Miroku out of the way when he tried to stop him. The only mark on the monk was when he came to a sudden stop against a large tree, bruising his torso and ribs. Inuyasha had really just tried to brush him aside. If he had been trying, he probably would have torn him apart with the blow alone.
Ten minutes later, every enemy of the enraged Inu-hanyou lay dead, and the threatened boy was cradled in his arms. His youki, which should have been dormant, tore at his mind. It did not want to be calm, or peaceful. It wanted to stay in control.
“Inuyasha, come back to me.”
It heard the calling of his female, but did not want to return to its slumber. No, it would stay. The human was useless…
Kagome approached carefully, not moving too fast or slow in her attempt to get within touching distance. Gently, she scooped the boy from his arms to pass him to Sango, who took him away to his family. Staying crouched in front of the shaking hanyou, she reached up to cup his face.
“Kagome.” He whispered, forcing himself to say her name. The youkai in him howled, raging against the forming bonds of the new moon that still hung in the sky. Trembling, he placed a hand against hers, keeping it to his cheek. His strength was leaving, disappearing into the darkness.
“It's alright Inuyasha, go to sleep.” She said, encircling his shoulders as he slumped forward, unconscious.
