Deadly Pact With Naraku
Kirameki Izumi
(Continuation of "A Forgotten Love")
The miasma hung thickly in the air as Kikyo walked through a desolate, dark valley. The earth was barren and dry and the only sign that there was once life was the few scattered dead trees. But Kikyo was not even slightly affected where most people would have died within a few second of entering the deathly, poison filled dwelling of Naraku. Kikyo stopped suddenly as she warily looked around her. "He's near." A familiar, sinister voice then came from the sky.
"Ah, Kikyo. Sharp as usual. It is no surprise that you found me before Inuyasha did."
"And you are just as cowardly as usual. Why don't you show yourself Naraku? Are you afraid of a dead priestess?" Kikyo felt a strong gust of wind blow from behind her as she said this. Kikyo remained unmoved as a dark funnel cloud was descending from the heavens towards the ground in front of her. As the dark cloud touched the ground, it dissipated into the atmosphere to reveal Naraku. He smiled mockingly as he stared at Kikyo.
"I also see that you have lost none of your arrogance. I would think that after our last meeting you would have learned better." Kikyo quickly pulled out her bow and aimed an arrow at Naraku.
"You're one to talk. You didn't even succeed in killing me yet you act so smug. How pathetic."
"Is this another pitiful attempt to destroy me Kikyo? I had hoped you would have posed more of a threat this time."
"Silence! I have no interest in your demise. I have come to make you an offer." Naraku looked at Kikyo in surprise and slight suspicion.
"What could you possibly offer me?"
"You may have become more formidable with that new body of yours but even after gaining all of that power you still haven't been able to dispose of Inuyasha." Naraku's eyes flared in anger as Kikyo said this.
"What are you saying, that you would help me destroy Inuyasha? I highly doubt that."
"Don't underestimate me. As if I would have such foolish feelings of the past control me."
"Then is this what you wish from me? Or is there something else you had hoped to gain?"
" I want you kill Kagome."
Kagome was sleeping peacefully in her sleeping bag as a certain pair of golden eyes kept watch over her from the branches in the trees.
“She's finally asleep.” Miroku was feeding more wood into the campfire while Sango and Shippo lay in peaceful slumber next to Kagome
“She must be exhausted after what she's been through. Speaking of rest, aren't you going to try and get some sleep?”
“I don't need any.”
“Suit yourself.” Miroku then walked over to a tree, rested his back against it, and closed his eyes.
“I won't sleep. I'm not going to give Kikyo another chance to kill Kagome.” Inuyasha's ears twitched as the wind changed directions. “What's with this wind? It…” Inuyasha sniffed at the air as the wind blew gently in his face. “It's Naraku's scent! No mistaking it! But how come I can smell it so strong now? I couldn't even catch a whiff of him before. It's a trap.” Inuyasha glanced in Kagome's direction. “Sorry Kagome. But I cant' take you with me. Not this time. There's something wrong about this.” He said quietly before he slipped from the tree branch he had been resting on.
“Miroku.”
“Huh?”
“I want you and Sango to look after Kagome for me.”
“Where are you going?”
“I can smell Naraku's stench. But there's something different. There's something wrong about it and I'm not going to take any risks. Kagome's almost been killed one too many times because of me.” And before Miroku could delve into the subject any further, Inuyasha dashed out of sight.
Kagome's eyes fluttered open and looked around her. It was still dark and the embers of the fire were slowly beginning to die. Kagome sat up and wiped the sleep out of her eyes. Kagome then looked up at the tree where Inuyasha was sitting, except he wasn't there. Kagome stared up in puzzlement and wondered where Inuyasha had gone when she heard Miroku and Sango's hushed whispers in the distance.
“So Inuyasha went after Naraku by himself?”
“Yes, he seemed troubled about something.”
“What do you think it was?"
“I'm not sure. I don't think Inuyasha knows what's troubling him but he told us to look after Kagome.”
“He went by himself? But why?” But Kagome was interrupted by a soft voice in the distance. It was a child's voice singing in the far distance. It sounded unearthly and too beautiful to be part of this world, almost as if an angel were singing. Kagome sat in silence as she listened to the voice. Not daring to breath in fear that it would somehow scare the voice away. It seemed to be calling to her in loneliness. Begging her, pleading with her to come make its aching loneliness go away. Kagome could feel hot tears rolling from her eyes as she listened to the poor creatures suffering and without any second thought she quickly rose up and rushed towards the voice. Hoping that she could somehow give it comfort.
“Does Kagome know about this?”
“No she's asleep.”
“She is?”
“Of course she is she's right over…” But Miroku stopped mid-sentence and looked in horror at the spot where Kagome had been sleeping just a few moments ago.
“She's gone!”
“Kirara!” At Sango's command Kirara quickly roused from her sleep and transformed into a giant cat.
“Hurry Miroku! We have to find Kagome!” Sango yelled as she climbed onto Kirara.
“Shippo wake up!” Miroku said in a hurried voice
“What is it?” Shippo asked sleepily as he gave a great yawn
“I'll explain on the way just hurry and get up.” And with that, they were soon up in the sky, straining their eyes through the dark for any hint of Kagome.
“Damn it! Where the Hell is he?” Inuyasha had followed Naraku's scent deep into the forest. The scent had been so strong, but now it had suddenly stopped. “Where could he have gone? Why does the scent just stop here?”
“You won't find Naraku here.” Inuyasha turned to see Kikyo standing calmly behind him.
“Damn it Kikyo! Where's Naraku?”
“I believe he's finishing up some business he has with that girl.” Horror poked Inuyasha's heart like a hot needle. Did she mean…?
“Kagome.”
“Yes, but that girl shouldn't concern you right now.” Kikyo was aiming an arrow at Inuyasha. Hatred and anger were both mingled into a horrible expression on her face as she pulled back the arrow.
“That girl was always more important to you wasn't she?” Inuyasha stared back at Kikyo in fury as he growled. “How dare she?”
“Don't look so distraught Inuyasha. You will meet her again in Hell. She's probably on her way there as we speak.”
“Kagome.” Inuyasha turned away from Kikyo and began to run to Kagome's aid. However, Kikyo's arrow was too fast. Inuyasha could feel the arrow thrust his body roughly against a tree as it pierced into his chest. Inuyasha felt the iron hot pain spread through his body like liquid. Inuyasha tried to pull the arrow out but a barrier prevented him from doing so. Kikyo lowered her bow, turned and began to walk away.
“I'll let you live a little while longer. Just long enough to see her die as you sit there helpless to stop her death.”
”Kikyo. Damn you!” But Kikyo had already gone. Inuyasha's head dropped on his chest as he began to shake violently with anger and despair.
“Damn. How could I have let this happen? Kagome.” He didn't know how long he sat there, but it felt like hundreds of centuries had flown by before he heard a rustling in the trees. It was Kagome.
“Kagome! Run! It's a trap! Huh?” But Kagome didn't seem to hear him. Her eyes were glazed over and she didn't seem to notice that Inuyasha was there. It was like she was in a trance.
“She can't hear you.” Inuyasha looked down to see small girl with long dark hair looking up at him. Her voice sounded airy and her eyes looked like deep, black holes that sucked out all the light around her. It was another one of Naraku's incarnations.
“She's under my spell and she can't hear your voice where she's at.” Inuyasha suddenly heard another rustling in the trees as someone emerged from the forest's undergrowth. It was Kohaku.
“Kohaku. It's time for you to finish your task.” The little girl said as she turned in Kohaku's direction.
“Yes.”
“Task? That means…” Kohaku pulled out his weapon. It clanked coldly with the sound of death. The girl was now pulling Kagome by the hand down into a sitting position as Kohaku raised his weapon in the air. Naraku was going to try and use Kohaku to kill Kagome! Kohaku could hear Naraku's voice in his head as it commanded him to kill Kagome. “Kill her Kohaku. Kill her.” Kohaku began to bring down his weapon but stopped. “Kill her! Kill her!”
Miroku, Sango, and Shippo were still flying in search of Kagome.
“Any sign of Kagome yet Sango?”
“No not yet.” Sango squinted her eyes, as she looked further into the darkness.
“Wait I see her!” Sango's heart suddenly stopped. “Kohaku” She could see him bringing down his weapon on Kagome.
“Kohaku! No!” Kohaku stopped again in mid-strike. “Kill her!”
“No. I can't.” Kohaku raised his hand to his forehead as he began to feel a sharp pain. This was Inuyasha's only chance.
“Kagome! I know you can hear me! You have to break free of them! You're stronger than that! Wake up! Kagome!” As Inuyasha yelled frantically, Kagome's eyes began to clear.
“Inuyasha?”
“What?” The small girl was looking at Kagome in shock. “How could this be? No one can break out of my spell!”
“Inuyasha!” Kagome snapped out of her trance and ran to Inuyasha's side. Inuyasha could feel relief spread over him like a wave and as if in response to Kagome's voice, the arrow had disappeared from his chest. Inuyasha took no time in running to Kagome to check and see if she had been harmed.
“Kagome are you alright?”
“I'm fine.” They suddenly felt a gust of wind blow from behind them. They turned to see Kagura, the girl, and Kohaku escape into the distance on Kagura's feather.
“Damn it. They got away.”
“Kagome!” Inuyasha and Kagome turned to see the others flying towards them on Kirara.
“Are you all okay?” Kagome said anxiously.
“We're fine. Are you alright?” Miroku said in concern
“I'm fine.”
“Sango. I'm sorry about Kohaku.” Kagome said with sympathy. Sango stared at Kagome in surprise for a moment and gave her a sad but warm smile.
“It's alright Kagome. I'm just glad you're alright.”
“What happened?” Miroku asked.
“I'm not sure.” Kagome said as she tried to think back. “I just remember hearing a voice singing. It sounded so sad that I felt like I had to comfort it. ”
“It was one of Naraku's incarnations.” Inuyasha said with a slight hint of disgust in his voice. “It must have some kind of hypnotic power when it sings.”
“Did you see any sign of Naraku then?”
“No. The filthy bastard just left his scent as a lure for his trap.”
“I see." Miroku said with slight disappointment. "Shall we go then?”
“Yeah.” Miroku, Sango, Shippo and Kirara walked on ahead as Inuyasha and Kagome followed behind. Inuyasha had his arm protectively around Kagome's shoulders as they walked.
“Are you sure you're alright Kagome?”
“Don't worry. I'm fine.”
“I'm sorry Kagome. It's because of me that you almost got hurt.” Kagome smiled
“It's okay.” And Kagome closed her eyes and rested her head on Inuyasha's shoulder. Inuyasha smiled and kissed her forehead as he held her closer to him.
“Thank goodness you're alright Kagome. I thought I had lost you. I won't let this happen again. I promise.”
