InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Death Come Quickly ❯ Death Come Quickly ( Chapter 1 )
[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]
Kagome lay stretched out on the fresh soil, supporting her head with her bent arm, thinking. Thinking about the past, about the things that could have been, but now will never be, but most of all, of that fateful day.
*Flashback*
He had jumped into battle, just like always, and had paid dearly. Naraku had led them into his fortress and his trap by sending one of his offspring to attack Kaede's village, only to retreat back to his creator's abode, leading human, hanyou, and demon alike headfirst into a hoard of not-so-low-class demons. They had fallen for it hook, line, and sinker, and everyone was wondering if they were going to walk away from this battle. Inuyasha had attempted the Bakuryuuha, Tetsaiga's ultimate attack, but Naraku had unleashed a mysterious black light, shielding him and reflecting it back. All of the other demons had disintegrated, save for Kilala and Shippo, who had been far back, out of harms way.
Kagome, who had been trying to pierce Kagura with a purifying arrow, was thrown backwards quite a few feet. Miroku and Sango were rendered unconscious for a few minutes. As soon as Kagome was able to clear her vision, she noticed Inuyasha on the ground. Ignoring her injuries, she tried to stand up, but her large pack brought her down again. Leaving it on, she stood up again and quickly steadied herself. Running over to the hanyou as fast as her unstable legs would carry her, she fell down to her knees beside him. "Inuyasha..." She managed to whisper. She looked at his beautiful face, now streaked with pain, and placed her hands on his cheeks. He smiled weakly at her and tried to speak, but she cut him off by putting a finger to her lips. "Kagome.... I'm sorr-" She felt her eyes well up with tears and a tightness in her throat.
Removing her yellow book bag, she pulled out her CD player and put them on Inuyasha's fuzzy little dog ears, or as well as they would go. Taking his hand in hers, she pressed play.
"...However far away, I will always love you.
However long I stay, I will always love you.
Whatever words I say, I will always love you,
I will always love you..."
Listening to the song, Inuyasha saw her mouth the words he longed to exchange with her. "I love you". Wanting to tell her he loved her too, he tried to speak, but his mouth wouldn't move. It didn't matter though; all the feelings he could never express were now in his eyes. They shared their first and last kiss as he faded away into the abyss of death. Kagome's tears dropped onto his lifeless face. "Please, God no, please, no!" She cried out. Suddenly her body became all too aware of her own pain, emotional and physical, and she collapsed on top of the one she loved. She felt herself being lifted by Miroku's strong arms and then darkness seized her.
She awoke again to find Miroku and Sango asleep in Kaede's hut, and her wounds were bandaged. "Lay back down, ye have gone through incredible torment this past day and ye need rest." The kindly woman said from across the room where she was preparing herbs to dry by candlelight. Sitting up straighter, she looked around. "How long have I been asleep?" She asked. "Almost nine hours, dear." "So it's almost midnight?" She asked again. "Yes, it is." Letting her head drop, she asked one last question. "Where...where is he Kaede?" Looking at the young woman for the first time, she looked into the eyes full of pain, eyes not unlike her own. "Houshi-sama prepared a proper grave for him beside the hut." Looking away, she heard Kagome struggle to get up off the mat and then hobble out the door. Knowing it would do no good, and thinking she would be back inside by morning, Kaede let her go.
Upon coming outside, Kagome had torn off all the bandages and cried, no, sobbed. She cried harder then she ever had until she fell into a restless sleep. That morning she woke as the sun rose. Leaning against a small tree near Inuyasha's final resting place, she had whispered to him, telling him what she wanted to always say. That she never really meant it when she said he was a jerk, that she didn't care when he called her wench. When Miroku, Sango or Kaede came out to try to convince her to come inside or eat something, she shooed them away, said nothing, or just shook her head.
*End Flashback*
That had been almost a week ago. It had rained three times and got very cold at night, but the only thing Kagome would take from Kaede was a thin blanket and sips of water. She knew she wasn't being very careful about her health, and frankly she didn't care. Inuyasha, her whole life was gone. Suddenly Kagome heard someone clear their throat. Turning her head slightly, the depressed young woman saw Miroku, Sango, Shippo, and Kaede standing a few yards away.
The silence was deafening as the quartet stared, taken aback at the pitiful sight before them. Kagome's hair was tangled, her face pale and drawn. Her clothes were blood stained and her injuries hadn't even begun to heal and were infected. "Lady Kagome, please, I know it is heartbreaking, but Inuyasha is gone. You aren't yet, but will be soon. Please, please don't give up. Your aura is fading fast, as is your soul. I can see it...Let us take care of you..."
Kagome's tear stained cheeks were now wet again. "I'm sorry...I've let you all down....But I don't want to heal and go on living. Not with out him." Her voice was raspy and her throat was dry. Then, directly in front of her, was Inuyasha, his arm outstretched. A bright light surrounded him and suddenly Kagome knew. She was meant to go with him.
"Houshi-sama, do you see that?" Sango exclaimed. "Yes. But it can't be him...he's passed on...and Lady Kagome's aura has just grown considerably!"
Kagome heard all this clearly, but it was hollow, as if they were all in a large room, on opposite sides. She sat up and took Inuyasha's hand, noticing all her pains had disappeared. "Inuyasha" She whispered. Her one and only love looked down at her. "You know what this means, coming with me?" He asked gently. Smiling sadly, she replied. "Yes, I know. I want to go..." Inuyasha's face brightened. Bringing Kagome into a tight embrace, they began to fade into the afterlife, or rather, they faded into the beginning of the end.
