Inuyasha had fallen on his ass after landing next to Shippo. Now he was frozen in place, not even breathing as the rest of his group made it to the crying kit and himself. Miroku dropped his staff and took to his knees, uncaring of his injuries now, his hands fluttered around the miko's head and neck area in abject shock. Sango gave a keening high pitched sound as she viewed her friend for the first time since coming awake with her head in the monks lap, her already unsteady legs lost what little strength they had as tears gathered in her eyes.
This couldn't be! But all of them could clearly see that it was so.
Kagomes eyes were partly opened and very blood shot with broken blood vessels, making the incredible blue and silver colors of them stand out even more so. Her face had a gray-blue cast with hints of purple and red in some areas, some of the delicate vains in her face and neck were standing out starkly... And the most damning thing of all, her head had flopped to an unnatural angle and the necklace holding the shards of the jewel of four souls was catching on a protrusion sticking out of an area of her neck where there should not have been one.
Her neck had obviously been broken but her face... It looked as if she had sufficated instead of dying instantly.
"Oh gods!" Sango covered her mouth with shaking hands.
No one stopped Shippo as he moved to some bushes and started emptying the contents of his stomach in between wrenching crying. They themselves were in to much shocked horror to try and comfort him.
Sesshomaru put a hand out, stopping his ward from moving any closer to the preistesses body. He remembered Rin being slightly fond of her, the young girl didn't need to see the other woman in such a condition. Even if Rin had seen such things before, probably worse... Hell, the child had died herself. But still, this would undoubtedly upset the child, which he did not want.
He of course had already known she was dead as he hadn't been able to hear her heart beating upon arriving, with his superior hearing he would have. Not to mention the vibration tenseiga had been emitting constantly from his hip. Rins voice broke him from his thoughts.
"What happened to her Lord Sesshomaru? Will she be okay? Her friends are all very sad..."
Shippo, Sango and Miroku were all crying steadily by now, and her Lords brother had his eyes hidden by his bangs, his body hunched. Rin had a small frown on her lips, she couldn't see Lady Kagome past her friends and her Lord wouldn't let her move forward anymore.
Sesshomaru gave an silent sigh. "Do not concern yourself Rin, we are leaving." As he turned to lead the child away, the priest finally laid one of his hands, the non cursed one, on the shoulder of the girls body, and a glint of light caught Sesshomaru's attention making him stop. No one else seemed to notice, but the shards had started to darken as soon as the priest touched her. Did this mean no one else would be able to handle the jewel?
He looked down at the child when Rin spoke up again. "but... shouldn't we help them my Lord? Is lady Kagome hurt?"
The Lords lips compressed into a thin line as Jaken made a scoffing sound from a ways behind him, the first noise the toad demon had made since entrance to the clearing. It had probably been Rin speaking up that had given the toad the courage to make any sound at all. "Jaken, be silent."
"P..p.please... Y..y.your s..sward."
Sesshomaru looked into the watering, blood shot emerald eyes of the shaking kit who had moved closer and was groveling about six feet in front of himself and his ward.
'foolishness.' He thought to himself.
Although... He glanced at Rin from the corner of his eye before returning his eyes to the kit once again. 'Hn, perhaps courage then.'
Rin was looking at the fox, tears just beginning to dot her eyes and her bottom lip barely starting to tremor.
She was bravely trying to hold her emotions in at seeing her once in a while playmate so upset. She did not want to make her Lord uncomfortable or her friend feel even worse! But... something bad must have happened to lady Kagome, which also made her sad.
Sesshomaru glared off to the side at some trees. Shippo felt his heart brake even more, tears and hiccups coming faster.
'He isn't going to help... Momma kagome...'
The tall demon huffed rather loudly then proceeded to stalk around the pups going to were the group of adults were ignoring all but the dead woman. Shippo kept his shocked gasp to himself just barely, but could not hide the surprise and hope that blossomed on his red face.
Seeing as the others had been lost in their emotions and staring unseeing at the dead woman, they had missed the exchange between the children and the dog demon. Just like they had missed the jewel becoming increasingly darker as the minutes ticked by. Therefore they were all started badly by the deep baritone voice barking out.
"Move."
The humans gapped a moment before slowly complying. Inuyasha stiffened but did not move, even to look at his older half brother. If not for the change in posture, sesshomaru would have believed the fool to not even have noticed his presence.
"If you do not want the miko to stay this way... You. Will. Move. You also will not interfere." He paused.
"It matters not to me if she stays in this condition or not, however I believe she is the only one who can reverse that." He gestured at the corrupted shards, bringing the jewel shard hunters, now focused attention, to it.
Sango and Miroku both blinked in shock at the whole surreal situation.
Inuyasha finally came out of his aghast state and moved away also. This was just too unreal, like something from a nightmare.
'Like Kikyo all over again.' Inuyasha shot Kagome a grimace type expression, only to quickly look away again. 'Yet not...'
Sesshomaru drew out his sward, the vibration became a pulse as the swards metal sang upon being drawn from its sheath. A sward being drawn always sounded like music to him, beautiful and haunting. This time it seemed overly loud though. He had a feeling, instinct or intuition perhaps, that this would definitely continue to haunt him. In what way he was unsure.
Seeing the shear number of pall-bearers trying to take away the apparently enormous soul of the miko Kagome was quite a shock to the dog demon. His eyes widened considerably, his lips parting to let loose a slight gasp before getting his expression back under his control.
'What the devil?' His eyes narrowed having never seen anything like this before.
It actually took three swings in all, even with his considerably long arms, to kill all the creatures. When the last one faded into smoke before his eyes alone, he sheathed his once more silent sward again.
When nothing happened, the others started to move restlessly, fidgeting nervously.
