InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ December ❯ Chapter 3

“What do you mean, what am I doing? I'm eating dinner, what the hell does it look like? Com'on Inuyasha, it's not that hard. You've seen me and others do it often enough to recognize it when you see it. You're not that dumb, at least, I don't think you are.” Kagome scoffed, all happiness at seeing him having vanished after his statement. She briefly noted his slightly taken aback look, but she was too much on a roll to care. Her anger from before had resurfaced and seeing the reason for it, she couldn't help herself and let it loose. “How dare you just barge in here and start shouting? I thought you knew better, but I guess I was wrong.”
By now, Inuyasha was sputtering and floundering for an answer. “Wha - ? I…uh, whe -” He tried to formulate a sentence, but his mind was racing too fast. He almost had a complete thought when her previous comment about him being dumb caught up with his exhausted mind. Oh hell no, she did not just say that! “Now look here, girl. I don't know what your problem is, but you don't have to be taking it out on me. What's wrong with you anyways?”
She opened her mouth to retaliate, but closed it without a sound. It wasn't worth it, was it? He'd made his choice, and so had she. Vaguely, she noted her family quickly and quietly leaving the room, giving the two of them the privacy to talk. Probably for the best, she thought, wouldn't want them to know I might die soon. Looking up at him, she sighed. Might as well get this over with.

“So, when are you going to do it?” she asked, her voice dull and backed by indifference.
“Huh?” was his confused reply. He was thrown by her sudden shift, and was at a loss. “Do it? Do what? What the hell are you talking about?”
“Killing me. Taking away my soul. Making the wish on the jewel. Any of this ringing a bell?” she was getting tired of his bewildered attitude. She might have been able to deal with it better if he wasn't acting like he had no idea what she was talking about. Why was he acting like he didn't understand? He was the one that said it, wasn't he?
“Kill you? I'm gonna kill you?!” he cried, shocked she could even think that. Something was not right here and he was starting to get pissed off.
“Isn't that what you said?” Kagome snapped. Yes, she was defiantly getting tired of his puzzlement.
“What? When did I say that? When would I ever say that?” They were both straining to keep their tempers under control, with their fists clenched, and faces contorted in anger and frustration. “Why would I kill you, when we've only just been set free?”
The pleading and total confusion in his voice was the proverbial straw that broke her back. She jumped up, and with tears streaming from her eyes, let him have it. “God damn it, Inuyasha! I saw you! I frickin' saw you in the forest with Kikyou. You were planning on what you were going to do once you had the jewel. Why are you denying it? You even said that you wished I hadn't been born. What were you doing? Just waiting for the chance to get me all warm to you before breaking the news that you prefer a dead thing to me? I told you I love you. Doesn't that mean anything to you? I thought we were actually getting somewhere. I thought we could be together. I thought…oh what the hell,” she said, the fight leaving her.
She was tired and hungry, and such an emotional eruption had sapped the last of her strength. She seemed to wilt, sinking to the floor in a boneless heap. Her head was down, her hair falling to cover her eyes so he couldn't see her expression, but could still hear the sniffs and see the occasional shake of her shoulders. “It doesn't really matter what I thought, does it?” she mumbled. “Well, you have the jewel now, so why don't you go back? Kikyou is waiting for you.” She didn't want to say that; didn't really want him to leave. But she wasn't going to stop him if that's what he really wanted. She loved him too much for that.
Up until now, he had been standing over her with a horribly irate frown marring his features. But upon hearing her outburst and then dejected comment about Kikyou, the frown smoothed away into a small understanding smile. Kneeling in front of her, he softly lifted her chin so she could look into his eyes.
“Kikyou,” he said slowly, so that she wouldn't miss a word, “isn't waiting for me. She never will. She can't. She's dead.” Hearing her snort, and knowing she was about to say something along the lines of `no shit Sherlock', he hastened to finish. “No, really, Kagome. She's dead, she's never coming back.” Knowing that now was probably as good a time as any, he pulled his gift from inside his shirt, and cupping it gently in his hands, presented it to her. “She can't, because I have her soul.”
