InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ December ❯ Chapter 5
[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]
GAH!!! Please don't kill me!! I'm so sorry it took so long to get this out, but the move is complete, my computer is up and working beautify, and the creative juices are running again. So, without further delay , here is the last chapter of December….I might put up a epilogue later, but I'm not sure.
“Kikyou,” he said slowly, so that she wouldn't miss a word, “isn't waiting for me. She never will. She can't. She's dead.” Hearing her snort, and knowing she was about to say something along the lines of `no shit Sherlock', he hastened to finish. “No, really, Kagome. She's dead, she's never coming back.” Knowing that now was probably as good a time as any, he pulled his gift from inside his shirt, and cupping it gently in his hands, presented it to her. “She can't, because I have her soul.”
She stared, completely unable to do anything else. The blue green orb was pulsing slightly, and it took her a moment to realize it was beating in sync with her heart. This truly was her soul. But…but, how can that be? He…said… confused and unsure, she voiced her doubts. “But what about what you said to her? Wishing that I was dead; turning human and marrying her and having a f-family? You said you would be happy; so why…why this?”
Understanding that she was still a little dazed, he calmly (and quite unlike himself) sat down, placed the bit of soul in his lap, and started to explain.
And I give it all away
Just to have somewhere to go to
Give it all away
To have someone to come home to
Just to have somewhere to go to
Give it all away
To have someone to come home to
“Ok, you have to promise not to interrupt me? Alright? It'll just be harder if you do.” At her nod, he continued. “First, I never said I would be happy. I said that I would be content. That doesn't mean happy. I don't think that I could ever be truly happy with her. The Kikyou that I loved is dead and gone. She was the moment Naraku struck her with his claws, pretending to be me. I think her heart, the heart that loved me and that I loved, died in that moment, and could never have been brought back to life, or reborn.” He said the last part deliberately, knowing what else she might have heard and wanting to put her possible fears to rest. Pausing to let her absorb this he waited again for her nod before pushing forward.
“Second, I never said that I wished you dead. What I meant, and what I told her, was that I wished that this whole ordeal never would have happened, just to save all those that had been hurt the pain that they went through. I never would wish that you hadn't been born.” Before he could go on, Kagome forgot her promise and broke in.
“But you did! You said that you wished that I had never been born. That she-” she was cut off by his lips, softly pressing against hers. Pulling away, he smiled slightly at her dazed and open mouthed shock.
“Didn't you promise not to interrupt?” at her meek nod and still slightly glazed eyes, he continued. “What I told her, after I assume you left, was that yes, I could wish for that, but I never would. I would never wish that I had never met you. You are the greatest thing to ever happen to me, why would I want to take that away?” he unconsciously tightened his hand around the soul, and she gasped slightly. Realizing his mistake, he loosened his hold, and taking a deep breath, continued.
“I'll admit that I had hoped to see my Kikyou some where in that shell, but when she said that taking back her soul probably would kill you, and she was fine with that, I knew the old Kikyou was gone. See, the Kikyou I once loved would never have been so selfish as to allow someone else to die just so she could live. In that moment, I knew that she was truly gone, and all that was left was hatred. Don't snort at me. I had to see for my self.” Raking a hand through his hair, he sighed. “Look, I know it's hard to believe, and that you're still mad at me, but isn't this proof enough that what I say is true?” he complained, holding out her soul in emphasis.
She stared at it for a moment before answering, “Yes, it's proof enough. But what I don't understand is how you got it. She wouldn't have just handed it over with a smile, knowing that it would kill…her…you didn't, kill her did you?” she gasped.
“Well, not really.” He replied. “I mean, she was already dead, wasn't she?” he attempted to make her smile, but all he got in return was a slight frown and huff. He sighed again before saying, “Yes, in a way I did kill her, again. I told her that Naraku was dead, my promise was completed and that she needed to go on to the after world. She obviously didn't agree, and…so, well…anyways, here it is. Please, just take it, and don't ask me how I got it.” He held out the missing piece of her soul and softly deposited it in her hand.
Kagome gazed down at the warm blue orb, her mind still full of questions. She wanted to know how he had killed Kikyou; what they had said to each other; how he now felt about it. But then, she realized that some things were better left unsaid. After all, she had never told him about the time Kikyou had tried to kill her after stealing the jewel shards, and she never intended to. Setting her questions aside for a later time (if it ever came), she smiled and gently placed her cupped hands to her heart, letting the lost piece rejoin with the rest of her.
She looked up to see him staring hard at her, and she smiled softly at him. “Now what?” she tentatively asked, knowing that there were still some things that needed to be dealt with; one of which was what had happened earlier in the well house.
“Well,” he started, “I was kind of hopping that you would want to come back with me. I mean, we never got to celebrate properly and all. Plus, I still have that wish to make.” He smiled, showing off his fangs.
She smiled back, accepting the hand he held out. After a brief explanation of where they were going and why to her family, they left for the past (and possible future) still hand in hand.
