The cold and the silence, the silence and the cold. Their greedy fingers moved swiftly through the many shadowed passageways and corridors, until finally they came upon the maiden with her ivorn flesh exposed, rousing her from a restless slumber - the cold, the silence. The darkness that seemed to swallow up the room even as morning shone clear and cool outside the castle walls. Reality came crowding down upon her temporarily blank thoughts, unwanted memories, enough to suffocate as they colored her entire being. It was then that she felt the pain.
Not only the physical pain that spun through her weak, human body, but that sort of sinister pain that still captivated her eyes, which no longer generated the same warmth that they had over fifty years ago. Brought back to 'life' for the second time, she still knew that anger and that hurt so well, it had become an uncomfortable companion - and nothing could change that look in her eyes, not now. That look of eternal storm, forever unwinding turmoil. Again, her sacred vow came to mind. But before the destruction of the vile evil that was Naraku, she had to accomplish some admittedly simpler tasks - first of all, dragging herself up off the floor.
Each limb felt impossibly heavy, shaken with waves of ache and stiffness each time she dared to move them. Silently cursing her stubborn appendages, she maneuvered her way across the room in a sort of dragging manner, gritting her teeth at the slowness of each action - after all, Naraku could return at any moment, to repeat the sequence of wicked deeds.
But her heart's steady beating told her he was no where near; his presence was a strong one. Even as she was lowered back into the varied weaknesses of humans, she knew in her own wisdom that she would have known, would have sensed the danger of his closeness. Elongated fingers rummaged for her clothing.. the holy garb that once seemed so honored, now wrinkled and grimy, tainted by his touch.

The hours yawned by slowly as she wandered through the wood .All that had looked so eerily beautiful just the night before last - dulled, the luster gone from everything. Creatures darted through the vegetation, the sound of people murmured over the rolling hills, the sun struck viciously and blindly down at the world. Solitude and all its lurking challenges were gone. Even though the world teemed with life, overhead, underfoot, all around, the world remained lacking and bereft. Beauty had vanished over the course of one night; but one beauty remained. The one she sought to find. Her very own InuYasha.
