The phone rang interrupting his quiet brooding and he growled. Golden eyes flashed in the near darkness and he grabbed the handset.

“What the hell do you want?”

“Is that any way to greet and old friend when he calls,” a male voice replied.

“Fuck, Miroku what do you want?” he bit out.

“As if you were doing anything more pressing than sitting alone in the dark feeling sorry for yourself,” Miroku snapped. InuYasha started to protest but Miroku cut him off. “Sango asked me to call and yes it is important.”

InuYasha sighed. He just wanted to be left alone. “Then come out with it already.”

“She has a friend. Her name is Kagome,” Miroku began.

“Keh, no,” InuYasha cut in. “I don’t care how great this girl is or whatever. I am done with relationships.”

“If you had not interrupted me you would know I am not trying to set you up, but possibly to save her life,” Miroku told him. “Kagome has a rather nasty stalker after her.”

“Call the police then and let them deal with it,” InuYasha said.

“Damn it, InuYasha, just let him finish talking,” Sango came onto the line.

InuYasha growled. “Fine.”

“This man he is very wealthy and connected,” Miroku explained. “The police have either been bought or are completely ineffective. Kagome lives in constant terror. Most recently she woke to find her cat disemboweled at the foot of her bed, a love note written on her wall in its blood.”

“You know Sesshomaru revoked my dispensation,” InuYasha said. “You need someone who can still take care of the guy since the police can’t.”

“We are working on that, but he is nearly untouchable and she needs a place to go,” Miroku told him. “Your place is secluded and there is no way to connect it to her, especially since you’ve been basically off the grid for almost five years. Even now I am calling you on a disposable cell phone.”

“I really don’t think a woman being terrorized by a fucking psycho is going to want to come live with a total stranger,” InuYasha said.

“Ah, and now we come to the true beauty in our plan,” Miroku told him. “The lovely Kagome is a miko, untrained but with more than enough skill and power to protect herself from a youkai or in this case a hanyou.”

“Please, InuYasha,” Sango said quietly. “Kagome used to be one of the happiest people I’ve ever known. She was always so hopeful and kind hearted and now she’s fading away. She never smiles, barely eats and can’t sleep more than a couple of hours at time without waking up screaming. She needs a place to hide and more than that you can keep her safe.”

“We will worry about finding a way to get to this bastard, but until then she needs to be protected,” Miroku finished.

“You swear this isn’t just some fucked up plan to set me up and make me get over that lying cheating whore?” InuYasha asked.

“As much I wish you would move past the unfortunate events of your time with that woman, I swear to you that there is a genuine danger to this woman’s life,” Miroku replied. “Of course she might refuse even with what you are, but if you give your permission Sango and I will make every effort to convince her since we know she will be safe with you.”

InuYasha still wasn’t entirely convinced, but if they were telling the truth then didn’t he have to help. “Fine, but if this isn’t legit I am going to be pissed and never speak to either one of you again.”
