Chapter Nine: Welcome Home
“I think I’m losing my mind Sessh.”
“You’ve been saying that for the last three hours.”
“Then it must be true mustn’t it!”
“Don’t snap at me just because you can’t handle one day without your little ningen.”
“Fuck off Sesshomaru”
“Just so you know, the only reason I’m not kicking your ass up and down this room is because I’m taking into account the fact that you’re madly in love with this ningen woman, and I wouldn’t want her to return tonight to find your bruised and beaten body lying out in the hallway.”
“Keh, whatever.”
Sesshomaru noticed that his brother hadn’t denied being in love with the woman. And by the look on his suddenly pale face, it seemed that Inuyasha had noticed too.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kagome stepped out of her car and slammed the door shut. She eyed the long steep steps before her as she would any adversary. At the top of that hellish climb lay her childhood home and the ancient shrine she had grown up loving so dearly. She grit her teeth and began the tedious climb she had to endure every Sunday, though which never seemed to get any easier. I bet Inuyasha could leap up these steps with ease. I’m not discussing Inuyasha right now, so don’t even start in on me. But you wish you could be with him right now don’t you? I’m not talking to you. Hmm, thought so.
It was true though. She did want to be with Inuyasha, and she couldn’t help the stab of guilt that pierced her heart. She got to see her family once a week, and she knew her mother looked forward to her visits. Yet here she was, dreaming of being somewhere else, with someone else. Kagome suddenly felt the rotten daughter. Her mother had been heartbroken when Kagome told her she was moving out. The only thing that had been able to console her was Kagome’s promise to come home every Sunday. And now Kagome felt low for wanting to break that promise. It’s not like I want to ditch them to go shopping or anything. I just can’t seem to get that man out of my head lately. Oh, why am I so infatuated by him? I know why you can’t get the hanyou out of your head. Oh yeah, why? Not telling…God, you’re an evil bitch. Thank you.
Kagome’s mind drifted eagerly to the previous night. She could still feel the hot imprint of Inuyasha’s body as he’d pressed himself against hers. She could still smell his intoxicatingly masculine sent, and knew that nothing would ever smell as delicious. Best of all, she could still taste him whenever she licked her lips. Her body warmed at the memory of his hot mouth against hers, his silky sweet tongue tasting and exploring her welcoming mouth. Kagome’s mouth watered just thinking about him. And to think, she could have had even more of him. He’d offered her a feast last night, and she’d walked away. She’d turned down the chance to taste that perfect body, to let her tongue and hands explore and please, and to be pleased to no end. And for what reason did she let that Adonis of a man slip through her tingling fingers last night?
“Because I’m a fucking idiot.”
“Well I always knew that. It’s a shame it took you this long to figure it out for yourself though.”
Kagome came out of herself and was shocked to find herself at the top of the steps so quickly. Then shock gave way to a squeal of pure delight and she hurled herself into her brother’s waiting embrace. She hugged him tightly before stepping back to punch him roughly on the shoulder.
“Souta you ass, when did you get home? Why didn’t you call me?”
“Just got home a couple of days ago. I knew you’d be coming today and I wanted to surprise you.”
Kagome looked into her brother’s smiling brown eyes. Even though he was a few years younger than her, a sudden growth spurt now had him towering almost a foot above her. Kagome couldn’t believe how much she’d missed her ‘annoying little brother’ the six weeks he’d been gone. He’d been away for most of the summer on his Senior Class Trip, having graduated high school that previous May. Kagome had been so proud of him that she’d offered to pay for half of his trip fare. Of course, not being one to look a gift horse in the mouth, so to speak, he had readily taken her up on the generous offer. She hugged him tightly once more before releasing him.
“So tell me, how was Cancun? Was it as great as everyone made it out to be?”
“And more so. Excellent food, beautiful bikini clad girls-who all wanted me of course- and the best goddamn parties on the planet. The legal drinking age is 18 you know.”
“Well aren’t you the lucky bastard who’s birthday comes early in the year. And I’m sure you made good use of those ‘beautiful bikini clad girls.’ Though I do hope for your sake that you didn’t come home with some nasty little…malady.”
Kagome smirked as Souta doubled over laughing. The week before he left he’d done nothing but brag about how much tail he was gonna get on the trip, and Kagome had secretly thought it would serve him right to come home with not so fond memories of said tail. After a few moments, Souta was finally able to right himself.
“Oi, Kagome, I’ll have you know that I was a very good boy on this trip, so you needn’t worry about any nasties on my behalf.” Kagome gasped in mock surprise, and clutch dramatically at her heart.
“Don’t tell me that the great Souta, who’s been having sex since he was fifteen, was actually able to refrain from indulging in a little summer ass.”
“Tsk tsk. I thought you knew me better than that sister dear; it is me after all. When I said that I’d been a good boy, I was referring to the box of condoms I snuck into my suit case before the trip.” Now it was Kagome’s turn to burst out laughing.
“Of course, what was I thinking.”
“Thinking about what darling?”
“Mom!” Jana Higurashi hugged her daughter warmly and smiled. She loved seeing her daughter, even if it was for only a day.
“How was the ride down? Boring as usual I suppose?”
They were now walking down the short path that led to the house, and as always Kagome felt a small tug of home sickness.
“As always it was the most boring three hours of my life. But as always, it was absolutely worth it.”
“Well I’m glad to hear it. And how’s your week been? And work, how’s that going?”
“Yes, how is work going Kagome? I keep waiting to hear that one of those little monsters has electrocuted himself….again.”
“Oi, Souta that was one time, and he didn’t know that putting scissors in an outlet was dangerous.”
“Lucky he had you there to keep an eye on him, ne?”
Noticing the mutinous look in her daughter’s eyes, Jana quickly stepped between the two siblings.
“Now children, if you can’t play nice, I’m going to have to give you both a time out.” Kagome gave her brother one last glare before turning a cheery gaze towards her mother.
“Sorry mom, you’re right of course. Besides, I do have some news. Kink-er, Kikyo, recently just hired someone to help me at the day care.”
“Finally the bitch did something useful for a change.”
“Souta!”
“Well he’s right mom. Kikyo is a bitch, and don’t give me that look because I’ve heard you say it to grandpa more than once. Where is grandpa anyway?” Jana looked at her daughter, wondering just how many times she’d caught her little language slip.
“Out sweeping up the old well I believe, he’ll be done shortly. Tell me about the new girl Kagome. Is she quite nice?”
“Is she quite hot?”
“Yes, he is quite nice mom.” She had to smirk when she saw Souta’s face fall.
“Oh, a man. Isn’t that interesting? You don’t find many males working in child care do you? What’s his name?” Kagome shifted slightly.
“Um, his name. His name is Inuyasha Taisho.”
“Taisho, now that seems familiar. I wonder where I’ve heard that before.”
“I uh, think I’ll go find grandpa now. Really you would think he’d stop working long enough to visit with his own grand daughter.” She laughed half heartedly before dashing off towards the old well, with Souta right behind her.
“I’ll come too. I want to ask him why I came home to find my room smelling like an apothecary. The old nut’s been avoiding me since I got home, so I know he was up to something.”
“He probably found your stash of hentai and was trying to rid the room of evil spirits.”
“Shit.” He had to admit that it was a good possibility.
They had reached the old Sacred Tree and the well was just a few yards behind it. Souta knew that this was probably the only chance he’d get to talk to Kagome alone for the rest of the day.
“Okay Kagome, what’s up with you and this Inuyasha guy?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about Souta.”
“Uh huh. And I suppose I was just imagining that nervous look on your face whenever you mentioned his name.” Kagome shot him a lukewarm glare.
“Hey, who’s the older sibling here?”
“And I suppose this Inuyasha Taisho isn’t connected at all to the one and only Taisho Corporations. It’s probably just a coincidence right?” She eyed her brother through narrowed eyes and stood with her hands on her hips.
“You know far too much for someone your age you know that? It’s rather creepy.” Souta only smirked.
“So I’ve been told. Now, spill or I’ll tell grandpa what really happened to that bottle of brandy that ‘mysteriously’ went missing last New Years.”
“Hey, it’s not like you didn’t partake in the ‘festivities.’ You can’t blackmail me brother dear.”
“You’ve always been able to talk to me Kagome….”
Kagome saw the hurt look in his eyes and instantly felt ashamed. She and Souta were very close, ever since they were small children. They shared everything with each other and Kagome should have known that she could trust him anything. Even this whole mess with Inuyasha. She sighed, leaning against the Sacred Tree.
“You’re right Souta, I’m sorry. I know I can always trust you.” Souta nodded silently and stood next to her by the tree. Kagome relaxed a bit, knowing that she could always count on her little brother.
“Okay, I guess it all started when….”
Sesshomaru drove aimlessly down the deserted road. It was 2pm so most people where still at their respected jobs. Where I should right now damn it. He’d left Inuyasha back at the apartment. He just couldn’t stand being cooped up in that tiny space with the sulking hanyou all day. Sesshomaru had never seen Inuyasha in such a way, much less over a woman. His brother’s irritated mood and tendency to snap at anything he said, had finally driven Sesshomaru out of the apartment. He was surprised he’d lasted as long as he did.
Sesshomaru stopped at a red light and looked idly out the car window. An icy smile formed on his lips. The light turned green and he quickly turned the steering wheel of his black corvette and pulled into the almost empty parking lot of the Western Lands Café. Sesshomaru wasn’t hungry in the least, having already stopped off for lunch an hour ago. He was, however, quite bored, and the thought of a verbal spar with a certain messy haired ningen was not unappealing to him.
He stepped out of the car and walked briskly across the open parking lot. Once inside, he noticed that there were six people in the café; four of whom seemed to be couples. Sesshomaru took a seat at a table in the middle of the room, where he could easily be spotted. In less than two minutes he was greeted cheerfully by a young, blond haired waitress.
“Good afternoon, would you like to hear our specials today?” Her breathy voice and suggestive smile annoyed and amused him.
No, thank you. I would however like to speak to the owner.”
“I’m sorry, but Miss Saito isn’t here at present.”
“Well when will she be back?” The icy tone in his voice made the girl flush nervously.
“She won’t be. I, I mean not today. She said there was some sort of family emergency and that she’d be back t-tomorrow.” Shesshomaru frowned, disappointed. Well that’s fan-fucking-tastic isn’t it. Why are you so disappointed Sesshomaru? She’s only a woman after all. I’m not disappointed, simply bored. Whatever makes you feel better Sessh.
He stood abruptly, knocking his chair back and onto the floor in the process, and stalked out of the café, leaving a very startled and confused waitress standing in his wake.
Kagome sighed and flopped down on her couch. It was 9:30pm and she’d just arrived home after the three hour drive. She knew she should get to bed soon, and was about to do just that when she heard the insistent knocking at her door. Ahh, I just got home. Who the hell could that be? She pushed herself off the couch and walked to the door, and opened it wide to reveal a very irritated looking Inuyasha.
“Inu-” Her words were cut short when his mouth came crashing down on hers in a hard, passionate kiss. Her body was crushed against his as he held her tightly. Inuyasha pulled his lips from hers and started trailing hot kisses along her jaw and down her neck. His breath was ragged and warm as he moved his lips to whisper huskily in her ear.
“Welcome home Kagome.”
