Chapter 13

Previously:

Her place might not even be on this earth, but Inu Yasha knew for certain that it would never be with him. It was never meant to be, and this destiny would never be changed.

>.<

It all happened at once. The sorceress laughed, throwing the fire-balls she had created in Inu Yasha's direction. They hit their mark squarely; Inu Yasha never knew what hit him. But only one of the fire-balls hit Inu Yasha. The other one hit Kagome… or at least it almost did.

Kikyo took the blow for her in a sudden act of sacrifice which could have cost her her life-but it didn't. Kagome helped Kikyo up quickly and made sure she was okay.

"Our Miko powers shield us somehow…" Kikyo told her, "Try not to get hit though, it still hurts like hell." She let out a strangled laugh as she staggered to her feet. "Kagome-" Kikyo stopped Kagome from running to Inu Yasha, "The sorceress, she's Kazushi Mori!"

Kagome stared at Kikyo. Her mouth hung open as she tried to understand what Kikyo was telling her. "But-but- she's on our side!" Kikyo shook her head.

"Apparently not; she knows who you are. She's searching for the Demon Song as well and thinks that you have something to do with it-according to Myoga. Knowing that that woman is thousands of years old-she has that kind of knowledge. Don't get yourself killed!"

Kagome nodded, taking off to see if Inu Yasha was okay. He wasn't. He was badly injured. He wasn't burned because of his outer kimono's powers, but he didn't have Miko powers, meaning, even though he was a half-demon, those fire-balls hit him pretty badly, probably crushing his ribs and maybe his lungs.

Kagome shook him, "Wake up Inu Yasha! Come on-breathe!" Kagome looked up at Kazushi Mori, tears burning in her hate filled eyes. Standing up over Inu Yasha's body she raised Kikyo's bow and fitted an arrow to the string.

"You won't penetrate the barrier, even if your Miko powers are strong!" the sorceress cried happily. She looked totally amused at the prospect of killing off the friends one by one.

Kagome raised her chin stubbornly, hesitant confidence showing through her brave act. Miroku stood with Sango, Shippo and Kikyo as they watched the peculiar scene. Sesshomaru began to stir behind them.

He dragged himself up into sitting position, watching the scene as well. No emotions showing on his placid face. Kagome began to glow a faint white and the five had to squint to see her clearly.

"She's pouring her life into it!" Miroku said suddenly. "She knew her Miko powers alone couldn't be enough to break the barrier and kill Kazushi Mori- so she's pouring her raw life energy into it!"

Sango covered her mouth in awe. Hoping that Kagome knew what she was doing. Then she noticed something-Naraku. Kagome hadn't remembered that he was still behind her. As soon as she hit the sorceress-assuming she did-he would kill her.

Sango picked up her boomerang, but before she had a chance to swing it, Kikyo took her hand. "This is my battle; I have a score to settle." Sango nodded, stepping back and letting Kikyo by.

Kikyo fumbled for her bow and arrow only to realize that Kagome had them. Sango, seeing what had happened, handed Kikyo her sword. Kikyo smiled gratefully. Naraku, unaware of the danger he was in, stood at the ready to kill Kagome.

Kikyo held the sword up summoning up the last reserve of her strength and Miko powers. I've never done this with a sword before-she thought-but I guess there's a time for everything…

She aimed the sword so it would hit Naraku, hoping that her plan would work. Chucking the sword high into the air, she heard it sing as came down. It hit Naraku with the force of a speeding bullet.

Kikyo was forced to watch as Naraku clawed at the sword now protruding horrifically from his head. The sword and Naraku began to dissolve in columns of light. Kikyo heard one last scream as the light vanished and everything went dark except for two solitary figures glowing with unearthly light.

Kagome seemed as though she hadn't even realized what happened. To be precise, she hadn't. All she could hear was a voice. A deep male voice-Inu Yasha's voice. "Are you okay?" Kagome saw his worried face in her mind.

"Where am I?" She asked Inu Yasha. He smiled at her. "Just listen" He told her, holding her shoulders, "You can't go through with what your trying to do-it's not worth it. Not for me it isn't."

"No!" Kagome protested with him, "But it is! It is!" Inu Yasha just smiled. "You have your whole life ahead of you-my life wasn't worth anything, I've lived longer than I should have. But you-you have so much ahead of you!"

Now tears were burning little roads down Kagome's cheeks, "No Inu Yasha! You are my life!" The figure of the Hanyou began to fade as she felt her fingers let go of the arrow and the bow string snap. From somewhere in the distance she heard a scream as she fell.

She slumped down besides Inu Yasha, laying her head on his still chest. "You are my life- I love you Inu Yasha." The last thing she felt was Inu Yasha's hand close around her own. Then she closed her eyes and went to sleep.

"-And that, is the story of Inu Yasha and Kagome." Miroku finished, shifting the little girl sitting on his knee. She looked up at him with her big lantern eyes. "But what about the Demon Song?" Asked her twin brother seated at Sango's feet.

Reaching down and scooping the struggling little boy up, Sango cradled him in her arms. "The Demon Song? Some say that Kagome was the Demon Song-personally; I think it was just a myth. Maybe she was, maybe she wasn't, the world will never know. But-" She added, "I do know one thing."

"What's that mommy?" Asked the little girl. Sango smiled, "They loved each other, and that's all that mattered."
