The small blue ball bounced noisily down the stairs, the sounds echoed in the empty hallway as it hit the wooden floor and rolled. It bounced off the leg of the small table by the door shade less, bare-bulb lamp sitting on top. It rolled slowly into the den, stopping on the stained yellowish carpet.
A small child came padding down the stairs in bulldog pajamas, his floppy-eared doggy slippers slapping softly against the rotting wooden steps. He grabbed the post and swung around, heading into the den to retrieve his runaway ball. He skidded to a halt on the carpet and stood in the doorway as a large man reached down to pick up the rubbery object.
Slowly the child stepped into the room, the man, smiling, held the ball out. Coaxing the child farther.
“S'cuse me mister, can I have my ball?” the child asked.
“Oh, that's sooooo cute! He wants his Baaaaaall,” came a slurred voice from behind the man. “Do you like to play with your balls little man?” The woman asked giggling.
The man's smile broadened and he leaned down on one knee, watching the child. “Do you wanna play ball with us kid?”
The child looked thoughtful as he gazed from the man to the small blue ball in his hands. The got up off the couch and stumbled over, dropping her bottle of vodka to lap slowly from the bottle and soak the floor.
“Little boooy,” she sang as she kneeled down in front of him, “do you wanna plaaaay?” she reached out, cupping his face in her long greasy fingers, her chipped nails scraped against his cheeks leaving irritated red marks along his skin.
The man stood behind her, tossing the ball up and down in one hand as he watched. The woman tugged at the boy's chin to keep his attention on her. Her breath stank and he had to try really hard to keep from covering his nose. He blinked, his eyes watering from the intense smell of alcohol and whatever else she had added to her drink.
`Help me' he cried out in his mind, he new what was going to happen wasn't good, he didn't know what she planned but it wasn't good. `Brother, please help me.'
“I don't care. I'm never coming back.”
“Brother!” He bolted up, trying to catch his breath, he searched around, but what he saw wasn't the barren walls of his room, and he couldn't find a trace of the smell of liquor or urine.
“Where am I.' He asked himself as he looked around the darkness. He ran his fingers threw his messy shoulder length white hair, grazing the top of his scalp with something sharp.
“Ow! Dammit! What did I cut myself on?!” He felt the warm trickle of blood slide down his forehead. Rubbing it away quickly he wrapped his arms around himself to try and keep warm. His shirt was missing, and it was far too cold for mid summer. Slowly he got down from the worn-out bedding and set his bare feet on the chilling floor. `That truck driver,' he remembered now. That damn driver knocked him out. Now he's here with half his cloths missing. Not hard to fill in the gaps. “There are just too many sick freaks in this world.”
Something soft moved against his back. In an instant, he had jammed his elbow back and spun his head to the side to see, but caught only the empty darkness. Then the same silky-soft feeling rubbed against his back again, he spun around to face whatever it was, this time it spun with him, slapping him in the face and cascading around his shoulders. He looked down in astonishment at the shimmering strands of silver hair. “What the hell!”
`Well, as interesting as that little chase scene was—” He looked up from his new hairstyle to see a figure leaning against the doorframe, the darkness concealed her form but the femininity of the voice told him it was a woman. “—I think its time we get started.”
“Who are you?' He asked in a growl that sounded more animal than it should have, but she just chuckled and turned to leave.
“Follow me if you wish to find out…Inuyasha…” with that she was gone. He didn't actually see her leave, it was like she was there…and then wasn't. Like her dark figure melted back into the equally dark shadows.
“How do…where you got my name?” he called out to her, not knowing just how far off she was now.
“It was written on the back of the picture you had in you coat pocket, I'm assuming it's of you and your brother.”
The echoing sound of her heals clicking on the stone floor of the dark hallway was all he had to follow as he quickly left the small room. He almost knocked her over when she stopped in front on a rusted metal door. She glanced back at him before grabbing the latch and pulling.
“Don't worry; you'll get your stuff back, as soon as we're finished.” She pushed open the door and at once they were enveloped in a blinding white light. Inuyasha squinted and raised his hand to block the painful sting the light caused. The woman walked out into the bright room with ease, her eyes quickly adjusting. She stopped and waited for Inuyasha to get used to his new surroundings.
Inuyasha blinked several times and tried to make sense of all these new signals being sent to his brain. So many different sounds and smells enveloped him, like he had spent the night in a condemned building and they began tearing it down while he was inside. The peculiar smells of items he wasn't sure he wanted to discover seeped into his nostrils as he took a deep breath and attempted to forces the sounds out of his head.
He took a few slow steps forward and looked around, discovering that the room they had entered was about the size of a baseball stadium, with white walls and people in white coats and white uniforms walking back and forth in front of large tanks of liquid or glass rooms where varieties of animals that were rivals were coexisting in an environment not there own. His ears picked up on conversations and his eyes caught both the tranquility of some and the slaughter of others.
“This way Inuyasha.” The woman called. He turned to see her, quite easily. Unlike the others, she was dressing in a cream colored long sleeved shirt and slacks with her black hair pulled back in a tight bun. Her facial features suggested that she was Asian, though her accent said she was probably an American by birth. Her crimson eyes stared back at him in amusement and the edges crinkled as she smiled. “You want your belongings, don't you?”
Blood splattered against one window caught his attention and he turned in time to see one person in a white coat throw up on the sparkling white tile. He listened as the man who stood beside the glass picked up a phone and pressed a button, and then he spoke into it in an unnervingly calm voice.
The specimen has gone hostile
There was an answer that Inuyasha could not hear from this distance, and then he heard three loud bangs and an agonized animalistic scream that forced him to cover his ears in pain. He shut his eyes and grasped hold of where his ears should be, but all that he caught in his fist was hair.
Slowly, as if traumatized, he began raising his hands in the direction of the tingling sensations coming from the top of his head; but before he could reach high enough the woman had appeared by his side and latched onto his arm.
“This way.” She spoke softly, a small hint of humor ever present in her voice. Gently she tugged him along, through the door and into another equally white, yet significantly smaller room. “Sit there,” she indicated to a soft, cushioned chair in the corner. He complied and she walked over to a large mirror at the end wall, obviously two ways.
He felt something had drained from his body, like just after an adrenaline rush ended, leaving him feeling light headed and cold without his shirt. He huddled into the cushioned chair and waited, realizing just how afraid he should be. But…whether it was his toughening life on the street, or just the fact that he felt as if he could feel every movement the woman was making, he felt completely calm…
“The drug must be wearing off.” He looked up at the woman as she handed him his folded t-shirt and coat. “You're shivering…” She pointed out. “The room you were in was kind of like a freezer, meant to keep the virus from attacking you before it was adapted to live peacefully in your body, the drug was meant to the cold environment wouldn't kill you, if you're shivering like this, its wearing off.”
“Where's my picture?” Inuyasha asked in a quivering voice.
Sighing she reached into her back pocket and pulled out the small white slip. “Here.” She handed it to him and he snatched it back as fast as his half-frozen body would allow. “He's cute.” Inuyasha looked up at her in question. “Your brother, he looks cute. Though if that's you on his shoulders, he is most likely older than that, if you're searching for him like Goshinki said you were, you should get it age progressed.”
“I…I like this picture…” He blinked and looked up at her. “Who's Goshinki?”
She chuckled and went back over to the large mirror and picked up two cups from a table beneath it. “He's the bastard truck driver my boss hired to collect helpless specimens like you…”
“Oh…Wait? What?!” He stared openmouthed at her as she poured some brown liquid into the cups and walked back over to him. Conscientiously he sniffed the air, `Coco.'
“Just realizing what I've been talking about? That driver drugged you and brought you here.” She handed him the cup of coco and leaned back against the mirror. Inuyasha watched her from behind the cup, the smell of the coco alone was relaxing, he took a sip and aloud the searing liquid to wash over his tongue and flow down his throat in a burning river.
“I've never much cared for Goshinki, he has—”she was cut off by the sound of shattering porcelain. She looked over to see Inuyasha gaping at the mirror behind her. `He finally noticed…” He was obviously a little slow in the discovery but he had the usual reaction. She watched as shock and fear washed over his face.
“What…what has happened to me?!” He turned to her, and she smiled. “What did you all do to me?!
“We made you better.” He narrowed his eyes at her and growled his animalistic growl. And she reached into her back pocket the grab her fan. Just as he lunged at her she pulled it from behind her and swiped at the air, throwing him up against the wall where instantly chains erupted and entangled him, leaving him unable to do anything but growl and scream such profanities that he could only have been raised up on the streets.
“DAMMIT! Who are you people?!” He screamed up at her from his position on the floor.
“Well, I don't even know the name of our organization, or the project we're supposed to be working on…but my name's Kagura. Like you, I was picked up and drugged, though it was more in a bar scene than a filthy diesel truck.” She taped the edge of her fan on her chin. “I was one of the first few specimens, and the first to survive the procedure.” Smiling she walked closer, until her heals her on either side of his shoulders, using the tip of her shoe she pressed the red button on the main latch and immediately the chains unraveled and slid back into the wall, disappearing beneath the tiles and leaving the room, untouched.
While the grumbling, cursing boy rose from the floor she moved back over to the mirror and nodded at her reflection. Then, the reflective surface of the mirror vanished and all that was there was a tinted looking window with a shadow of a figure standing behind it. Slowly the window slid down and the wall beneath it opened up allowing the figure to step out into the white light of the room.
“This,” She turned to Inuyasha, “is my boss.” Opening her fan and waving it carelessly in the figures direction. “Nuraku.'
