Denial

In the fields, picking herbs with Kagome and Kaede, she feels him watching. As she bends over again and again, bantering pleasantly with the other two mikos, the hair prickles on the back of her neck. Her childish adoration had become blurred with the onset of puberty, and she was feeling something new, something with the thrill of danger.

“You are ready,” he intones.

“No,” she whispers back, clutching his latest gift in her hands.

As his golden eyes bore into hers, she trembles, watching the cords in his neck stand out a moment as he exerts control over himself. In a swirl of silk, he is gone and she can breathe again.

“Has he asked you to marry him?” Kagpme says to her.

With a laugh, she shakes her head. “No, I am too young.”

Knowing looks pass between Kagome and Kaede, but they do not press her. Her hands shake and she wills them to still, not to betray the turmoil inside her. It is getting harder and harder for to keep up the pretense, but she tries. Her mind spins round and round. Protector…lover. Protector…husband. No, it is too confusing…

At night, when the others are asleep, she lies awake and lets the fantasies encompass her. Her small, calloused and plant stained hands travel her body under her yukata. Curves that had only just blossomed begged to be explored and she caressed herself, thinking of him. Slowly she let her hand slip between her legs, past the soft fluff of hair that now grew there, to ease the heat and need. Part of her was ashamed as she brought herself release…imagining it was he that gave her such pleasure.

“You are almost of age,” Kaede says to her. “You know what his intentions are, child.”

“No, it isn't like that,” she answers, swallowing and trying to sound casual. “He is like a father to me.”

“One day you must let go this willful childishness,” Kaede admonished. “He has been exceedingly patient, but some day he may come for you ready or not.”

She smiled and looked away as a shiver goes through her.

No, I'm not ready.

On a stormy night, she is alone in the hut. Kaede has been called away. Thunder echoes around her, and lightening makes the place as bright as day. And suddenly, he is there. He grabs her hands, which go limp with the guilt of what she had been doing. His nostrils flare, and his eyes burn with knowledge.

“Now is the time,” he says. “You can't deny it any longer.”

Her mouth curves around the word `no' but it is soundless.

“I can smell your arousal,” he says. “Every time you see me.”

Closing her eyes, she realizes she can no longer deny it - deny him. Being this close to him fills her with desire. She feels the last shreds of her childish misgivings leave. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she nods her head.

“Yes,” she whispers. “My Lord…”
