Desert Rose

Chapter Seven: The Dessert Snakes.

The castle lay silent, surrounded by the dust and heat of the dessert. Though the sun was out, there was an ominous feeling. Silence was more looming than loneliness, the calm before the storm.

Hiten stepped into the castle. He walked to the audience room. Sliding the door open, he entered the room.

“Have you found our trump card?”

He stared at the emptiness of darkness stretched out before him in the large audience chamber. Only sound had indicated the presence of another. He kneeled, showing either respect or asking for forgiveness.

“No, master…I looked, but could not find. However I did manage to damage Inuyasha. He seemed to have his mind off in another place, perhaps our plan has worked…or things are going in our favor.”

“No, Hiten. You must bring our trump card to me. There is something I want to speak of to it in person…”

“Sir, I think the trump card has found Inuyasha. If it is as we planned then why-”

“Do not doubt my plans, Hiten! I know what I am doing. You will bring her to me. Stay true to your word and I will stay true to mine.”

Hiten cringed at that last statement. His master's voice echoed with a hissing sound. He was truly displeased. Hiten didn't want to displease his last hope.

“Yes, master Naraku…”

Warm water splashed on the rocks of the spring. The water was a misty blue from the steam and the shade of the trees overhead.

It was the same bath that she was in with Sango two days ago. Kagome rested her head against a rock, closing her eyes, letting the warmth of the bath wash away her troubles. Though she knew that it wasn't her fault for not washing up in the last two days, because Inuyasha had failed to wake her in the last forty-eight hours, she still felt utterly dirty.

She signed, remembering how quiet Inuyasha was in the morning. When she awoke, he wasn't next to her like he had been the night before. She was alone in the bed and he was across the room gazing at the view from the balcony. When she had gone to bid him a good morning, he had barley accnoliged her. His face was expressionless and he only gave her a small glance before turning and heading for the exit of the golden room. The only words he had spoken were “Come on.”

Why was he so distant that morning? She didn't understand him. His mood swings where bigger than an enraged hippo.

She rose from the water. She headed to the other side of the bath where a small waterfall stretched covering a small cave. Her head whipped around. Footsteps where approaching, accompanied by- “Where were you all this time?”- Male voices.

Without thinking, Kagome jumped behind the waterfall, hiding herself from the emending male presence. Hearing the splashing sound, she assumed that the men had entered the pool. She gulped.

“I was healing.”

“I know that. I mean where were you healing.”
“None of your business.”

Kagome heard one the voices sigh. `It's Inuyasha and Miroku…'

“I went to see `brother' this morning. He was really pissed.”

“Why?”

“I don't know. All he told me was that I have to go back to base-point.”

The sound of water splashing made Kagome jump behind her hiding place. `Good one Kagome!'

“Inuyasha, how long do you think you can hold off the spell?”

“I don't know. I know brother and I have our limits and it wont be long…”

“What do you think will happen next?”

“I really don't know. Sesshoumaru told me that it's possible there might be a world war. I think that the Northern and Southern Domains might get involved.”
“Maybe Eastern Domain is looking for allies.”

“No they want to conquer everything. What they want is to turn our allies against us. If that basturd turns Southern Domain against us, it would be all but impossible to win.”

Kagome had forgotten her current state of undress and was fully etched into their conversation.

“I better head back. There is something important I must attend too.”

“Don't keep Sango waiting, monk.”

A cough and the sound of water splashing followed that last statement and Kagome assumed that Miroku had exited the bath and left, leaving her hiding from Inuyasha. For the moment a long pause followed the monk's departure.

“You can come out now, Kagome.”

She yelped in her hiding place. How did he know she was there? Her face was reddening ten fold.

“Oi, I can smell you. I know you're there.”

“No way!! I'm not coming out!” She yelled from behind the small waterfall, hoping that he will not come near her.

“Then I'll just have to come get, you wont I?” Her heart jumped at that.

“You wouldn't.” Dread filled her, when she heard the sound of water splashing.

“Try me.” His voice was close.

“AH! No don't, I don't have any clothes.”

“There's something I wanted to see.”

“ARH! You insufferable mutt!!”

Her screeched when she say two clawed hands pass through the falling water. “Take it.” She stared, surprised to see that he was holding a fluffy white robe out to her. On impulse, she snatched the robe and secured it around herself, seeing that the robe was really loose on her.

“Will you come out now?”

“NO!”

“Then I guess I'll have to come get you.”

“AIEE, NO!” She jumped through the water and splashed into the pool. Once surfacing, she noticed that the hanyou had entered the bath opposite her, smiling as if his nude upper half meant nothing. She rose to leave but noticed how the not wet robe clung to her body, not leaving much to the imagination. She yelped and sunk to her neck in the water. She heard Inuyasha chuckle at her distress. She looked up at him, pointing her finger at him in an accusing way.

“You, you stay where you are, you hear me!”

He shook his head. “I don't think you're in any position to give me orders. I could easily come over there.”
“Don't you dare!”
He laughed, causing her to narrow her eyes at him. Damn him! She was surprised to see him suddenly get serious.

“How much did you hear earlier?”

“I heard everything. You're going back to base-point?”

“Yes today, with Miroku.”
“Is Sango going too?”
“Yes,” he said, “But she will come to Base-point later.”

He rose from the water, making her shriek and cover her eyes. She heard some rustling and then- “You can look now.”
She took her hands away from her eyes to see that Inuyasha had his back to her, wearing his new dry white robes with a red sash. He was already walking away.

Kagome sat there in the water, confused. “He makes no sense,” she muttered to herself. “One moment he's teasing me. The next, he's completely serious.”

Rising from the water and drying herself, she turned to go find Sango and make plans to get to Base-point without Inuyasha knowing.

Walking down the forest path that led back to the castle contemplating how she was going to sneak into Base-point.

A sudden change in weather jolted her from her thoughts. From what had been a nice sunny day turned into a dark, cloudy day. Grey clouds hung in the air. She yelped at the sudden thunder. “AH! I hate thunder!”
She started running toward the castle, in hopes of escaping the coming rain and lightning.

Suddenly, lightning struck a few feet in front of her. She jumped backwards, staring into the blinding flash and almost seeing a body from in the bolt of lightning. She gawked at what, or who, was appearing in the lightning. `A sorcerer?' she though.

The flash cleared, reveling a young man. His dark, long hair was braded. He wore armor on his chest, blue and red fabric covering his arms and legs. A staff laid horizontally in his hand at his side. She flinched when she saw those red eyes latch onto her.

“Well, well, well, I knew I'd find you hiding here.” His voice was thick with the same rumbling sound of thunder, and it frightened her.

“Who are you?” she demanded, surprised at how steady her voice was.

“Oh, let me introduce myself. I am Hiten of the thunder brothers.”

`Hiten?' She narrowed her eyes angrily at him.

“So you're the one who injured Inuyasha! You monster!”

Hiten gave her an unaffected look before speaking again. “I'm afraid I don't have time to listen to your scolding. I have better things to be doing.” He walked toward her, stretching our his arm in her direction. “Now, if you'll be a good girl and come with me” Immediately, she had run from his grasp.

“Never! Stay away from me, whatever you are.”

Hiten stared at her. The girl obviously had guts, not that it would do her any good. She was going to go with him whether she wanted to or not.

“You're only denying the inevitable.”

“I don't go anywhere with strangers.”

His free hand shot out and grabbed her wrist, bruising the sensitive skin. “Let's not do this the hard way. My master would be displeased if you were hurt, but your not giving me much choice, are you, bitch.” His voice was threatening now causing shivers up her spine. He pulled toward him so that her chest collided with his.

“Let go!” She wriggled, trying to get away, but his hold tightened to the point of pain. The feeling was familiar and she remembered the fear she had felt when her attacker at Base-point had done the same thing.

Fearful of what Hiten might do, she vaguely felt her feet leave the floor. Lightning flashed again causing her to reluctantly and reflexively hold on to her captor. Hiten moved toward the lightning and stepped into it, still holding a dazed Kagome to him violently.

“No! Let go!” Her voice was muffled by the flash and growl of lightning.

Hiten felt the girl slump in his hold. The blinding spell had put her to sleep, which made things easier for him.

His mind was deep in thought as he walked his way toward the Golden room, intent on preparing his things before leaving with Miroku.

Inuyasha stooped on a step, something was a miss in his mind. His sorcerer side told him there was another of his kind near, a foreign kind of sorcerer. It was strange: his demon felt it too. His eyes widened, a powerful demon-sorcerer was near, near the bath.

He jumped from the window of the tower; running with demonic speed to the bath where he hoped his friend was unharmed.

She was gone. He sank to his knees, growling as he pounded his fist into the ground. Her scent was vague, mixed with the scent of another, a familiar scent.

He felt a great weight on himself. Did he get her into something she wasn't supposed to get into?

Dazed and waiting for her vision to come to full view, Kagome began to feel the damp earth near her head. It took her only a moment to register the cold, dark cell she was in. She shuddered when she saw Hiten enter the room and open her cell.

He grabbed her wrist and yanked her to her feet. “Come.” He ordered as he dragged her across the dark halls.

She was thrown into a dark room. A very large dark room with marble floors stretched before her. The only light was a small spotlight that surrounded her. Hiten stood behind her, guarding the sliding doorway as to keep her from escaping.

“So, you have found her, Hiten. Good. You shall be compensated.” The voice was thick and low. A very menacing voice that scent shivers through her body.

Slowly, the owner of the voice emerged from the shadows into her small sanctuary of light. The man whose red eyes only served to increase his menacing aura. His long, wavy, black hair and pale skin gave an air of wickedness. He wore the same royal robes that she had seen the lord of Western Domain wear, however the robes were a murky snake-like green.

“Who are you?” She asked, not knowing where her courage had come from.

“My, my,” the man said, “Where are my manners. I am Naraku, lord of Eastern Domain.”

“You! You are the monster that's creating the fake desert!”

Naraku smiled venomously at her. “I see you have learnt quite a lot from the hanyou half-breed.”

She growled furiously at him. “He is NOT a half-breed. He's kind and, sure, he may be a little arrogant, but he is not worthy of such crud names!”

Naraku gave her a menacing laugh. “My what a foolish girl you are.”

“What do you want with me?”

“I wanted to see the woman I brought here.”

“What do you mean?”

“I brought you here. I am quite sure that you were questioning how you came to this world.”
“It was YOU? You brought me here? Why?”

“What I need,” He walked around her, “is someone who can weaken the heart of Inuyasha.”
“ `Weaken the heart.'”

“You see, he is threateningly powerful, as a sorcerer as well as half a demon. I need someone to weaken his heart by getting close to him, and who better to do so than someone who is pure of the horrible things war brings about?”

“How could you toy with our emotions?!”

“Simple, because I can. Without Inuyasha's and Seshoumaru's combined power my spell shall take over and I shall have control over all the Domains and you, my little trump card, are my key to destroying Inuyasha.”

“Why are you telling me this? How do you know that I won't tell Inuyasha?” she smirked wickedly at him.
“My dear, foolish, girl. Do you not think that I would plan ahead? By the time Inuyasha finds you again, you will remember…”

She felt dazed as he waved his hand in front of her before she felt darkness take its hold. Though falling into a slumber, she was able to catch his last word: “…nothing.”

000000

Inuyasha steered his horse forward. Returning to the scorching desert, without knowing the whereabouts of his friend, nor if she was safe did not sit well on him, but orders where orders and his troops needed his guidance.

Three days he had spent at Base-point going over battle plans, helping fight and interrogating the enemy prisoners.

With Miroku and Kouga at his side, he surveyed the desert.

“No movements of the enemy so far dog-face.” Kouga said.

“Nothing at all?” Inuyasha answered.

“Nothing, I'm afraid Inuyasha-sama.” Miroku said.

“What's the big deal? Those basturds have been attacking us for three days none-stop and they suddenly decide to stop. I wish war was easy, wish those basturds would just give up.”

“We are not winning and you know it, Dog-breath. They have whipped out all the towns near the border, save for checkpoint.” Kouga seemed to remember something.

“Just out of curiosity, whatever happened to that bitch you were carrying?”

Inuyasha gave him a growl. “ I'm afraid I don't know where she is. I looked-”

“Leave it to you to lose a woman, Dog-turd.”

Inuyasha was about to give a smug reply when- “Inuyasha-sama!”

He turned his head to the direction of the voice. Miroku was overjoyed to see his wife coming toward them on her horse, but, once he saw her intense expression, his smile faded.
Sango rode toward the hanyou prince, her voice breathless and her face pale. She stopped in front of the baffled hanyou.

“Inuyasha,” she panted, “I found her! I found Kagome, she's at the border!”
