Chapter Twenty-One: To Go Home

“What do you plan to do with her?” Tsubaki asked as she entered the long, dark room.

Naraku's eyes traveled to the little girl standing a few paces away. She said nothing nor did she move. Her eyes, though watery, were empty and inexpressive. Her face was that of stone.

“Silva…that's what he called her…such a sentimental name. She won't be of any further use. Once she donates enough of her power, we won't need her to interfere with the natural flow of the world. She's already mutated nature enough. The rest of the spell shall fall to me. I will make sure things go as planned.” Naraku said quietly.

“Then what shall become of her?” Tsubaki asked again.

“I shall give her back to her dear daddy. But I won't guarantee that she will hold on to life afterward.” Naraku hissed through his smirk.

“I see…” Tsubaki smiled. “So you want me to finish the curse?”

“She has battled against death the entire time she's been with us. Don't waste too much of your energy. Kanna.” The other girl moved ghostly to his side, the mirror in her hands pretending to be the only light in the room. “Yes.” She said in an icy whisper.

“Take her away.” Naraki jeered.

“As you wish…”

`No more.' She cried. Once again it was the same dark place. No sound, not light, no warmth. It scared her. It was cold, like the darkness. There was a shrill ringing that attacked her ears. It made her head hurt.

`No more. I don't want to be here anymore. I want to go home.'

`No one is stopping you. Leave.' The second voice said unemotionally, indicating its presence. She stood, wobbly, begging.

`Come with me, please!'

`Fool, I'm not your friend.'

`That's not true.'

`If it's that painful for you, why don't you run away again?'

`They'll catch me.' She sobbed.

`Fine. Then stay here.'

`No more. It hurts. I don't want to be here anymore!'

“Then leave!'

`But, you…'

`Stop it. I'm not you!' The voice left the room, leaving her alone again.

“Papa…”

“But, Inuyasha.”

“Don't try and stop me.” He said, his voice didn't sound angry just emotionless, yet full of warning all the same.

“But you don't know where she is! She could be anywhere!” Kagome protested, holding his shoulders and trying to keep him from moving forward.

“I know where she is. The bastard left behind a clue.” He answered.

“But it could be a trap! You could be walking right into your death!”

“So?”

“So? SO? You don't care if you die! Don't start talking like that again Inuyasha!” She shook his shoulders angrily, yet his face remained impassive. Kagome was on the verge of thinking that his heart had dropped again.

“I don't care. I'm going after Silva.”

“At least wait till you're healed! How can you save her like this?”

“The more time I spend here, the more she is in danger.” Inuyasha hissed through clenched teeth.

“I know that! But it could be a trap and you could end up getting hurt! What will you do about Silva then!”

“Are you saying,” Inuyasha spat vehemently, towering over Kagome with his eyes blazing, “that saving Silva is not important if I lose MY life!”

“NO! I mean that you're too weak to go after her! If something happened to you, what would Silva do! What would I do! Tell me that Inuyasha!”

He bared his fangs angrily. “Out of my way.” He tried to push past her, but she rushed in front of him.

“NO! Stay where you are! I'm not done!” Kagome sneered,

“Oh yes you are! I don't want to hear anything else! I'm going after Silvana!” His eyes flashed red for an instant and Kagome suddenly realized that she couldn't stop him this time. He had already made it clear that he would die for his daughters. Something tugging at Kagome's heart told her that she shouldn't let him go, but something else told her that he couldn't bear losing Silva twice. She had to let him go.

“Kagome, what's going on?” Sango's voice broke through Inuyasha and Kagome's argument. Kagome turned to her. She had forgotten she was there.

“ I'll explain later.” Kagome said.

“Yeah, right after I get Silva.” Inuyasha said, trying again to get past Kagome, but she rushed in front of him again.

“Inuyasha, please.” Kagome tried reasoning again. “Think this through. There are more people here counting on you. Silva's also counting on you. If you died while saving her, then she really won't be saved. And your hands…Please just wait a bit.”

Kagome leaned on false hope as Inuyasha said nothing for a while. “No.” He said finally, his eyes determined. “I'm going.”

“Fine. Then I'm coming with you!” Kagome commanded.

“Like hell you are!” Inuyasha growled.

“Oh yes, I am! I'm not letting you do this alone! And you can't stop me!” She placed her hands on her hips.

“…Fine.” Inuyasha growled.

“Good. Then let's go. The sooner the better.”

Ignoring Sango and her confused look. Kagome watched as Inuyasha pulled his sword for the second time that day. He ripped open another dimension and with a flash of light, both he and Kagome were gone.

Dust. That was all they could see. No too long ago, the very place they were standing in was glamorous winter tundra. Far to the east were the charred remains of what used to be crystal palace. Just as it was with Southern Domain, this same land had become a barren wasteland. Kagome thought with a pang about Jordan, and how she must have felt when she had returned to Northern Domain in search of the Mirror of Memories.

Inuyasha was several paces in front of her, walking through the sand without a word to her. Kagome couldn't fathom what was going through his mind at that moment. She had never been a parent, she had no idea what it must feel like to always be worried about her children. With another tug at her heart, she wondered what her mother would be thinking back at her home.

Home, the idea felt so far away. Everything was beginning to feel so hopeless. All the domains were gone, and now they had one little island to protect the survivors…what was to become of them now? If they succeeded in saving Silva, what then?

“Inuyasha, are you sure they said that Silva is here?”

“Yeah.” Was his curt reply.

Kagome didn't say anything. She hoped they found Silva soon…and she hoped that Silva was safe. It would be really painful for Inuyasha if he lost Silva again. Kagome watched his back as he walked silently a few paces in front of her.

She would make sure that nothing happened to Inuyasha or Silva, but she was still worried that something was going to go terribly wrong. That some kind of dark twist was waiting for them at the end of this journey. Maybe she was imagining things, yet why was there this ominous badgering at her heart.

Inuyasha stopped walking. “What is it?” Kagome asked nervously, looking at his back. He took a deep breath and turned with serious eyes.

“Listen to me. I know it is probably a trap, or a trick, but I don't care. I want you to do as I say, even if it sounds dangerous. Also,” he turned his head, “I'm sure that you knew about the heart being the center of all power. I'm not sure if I can still command my energies as I could back then, but I'm not going to hold back.”

“You mean you're going to fight with everything you've got? Isn't that dangerous?”

“At this point, it won't matter.”

“What do you mean it won't matter?” Kagome demanded.

“Never mind. Let's go.” Inuyasha turned.

It wasn't long before Kagome recognized the area. Though it was covered with sand not snow, the familiarity of it was still there, as were the memories. Kagome felt a pang for Levion when she remembered that this was where he was killed. She remembered how Jordan's chest had ripped open. When her brother died, Jordan's heart, that was right next to his, returned to her, having served its purpose.

Kagome could tell what direction Inuyasha was headed now: toward the remains of Crystal Palace. Soon, the dead castle's towers rose up in the distance, and Inuyasha walked unflinchingly toward them. Kagome looked up to the highest tower as it towered over her the closer she got to it.

The castle's shadow loomed over them, as though for-telling of the darkness inside. Kagome stared at it. What was once a glittering, blue, diamond palace had now turned into pale glass that no longer shined. It was no longer the beautiful welcoming land she had entered with Levion all those months ago. Everything was so long ago, so far away. How had the world changed so much since she had gotten here?

“Let's go.” Inuyasha said, watching as Kagome nodded.

Inside the castle was just like Southern Domain. The smell of dust and death was so strong, that both Inuyasha and Kagome had to cover their noses, coughing at its potency. The inside of the castle was no longer full of life. There were no plants surrounding the glass walls. It was dead inside.

“Where is that bastard?” Inuyasha hissed.

Kagome looked around. Her nerves were already on edge. It was the deafening quiet before the storm, she knew it. Trying to keep her powers in control in case she was caught off guard, she scanned the room, but it was clear that there was no one there but the two of them.

Then it came, the same silver that Silva left behind appeared in the corner of her eye. Turning, Kagome saw it vanish into a nearby corridor. “This way.” She told Inuyasha, while following it. Inuyasha was startled for only a moment, but he followed her.

Kagome rushed through the halls, her eyes on the silvery light that was leading them. It was strange. Did Silva know some sort of summoning spell? Usually it was Silva that would appear and lead her, but now it was just a platinum string of light. Appearing out into a large round room, Kagome looked about the rusted walls, searching for the light again.

“What is it?” Inuyasha asked when he caught up to her.

“I don't see it.” Kagome said, looking around.

“See what?”

Then it appeared again, in an entrance to a small, dark hallway across the room. “There!” Kagome breathed, rushing after it. She emerged in a dull room. They must be underground. The silver light was coming from a figure standing in the middle of the area.

When Inuyasha entered the room, the brightness of the silver light caused him to place his hand over his forehead. He squinted at the figure standing there. “Silva?” He asked.

Slowly the light dimmed, as they watched and waited. Silvery hair appeared through the light, but it wasn't the girl they were searching for. Instead, the mirror in her hands reflecting her face, Kanna stood in the middle. Her blank eyes and face watched them.

“So you came?” She said quietly.

Inuyasha stepped forward. “Where's Silva?” He demanded through clenched teeth.

Kanna looked up at him slowly, her expression the same. “Close.” She said. Inuyasha growled. Kanna said nothing. Instead her hand pointed toward another murky hallway that lead to a room that was even darker then the one they were standing in.

“There?” Inuyasha asked.

“…Yes…” Kanna whispered, and in the next instant she had vanished.

The next moment Kagome and Inuyasha found themselves creeping through a long passage way. It seemed to stretch on forever and it was so quiet. Kagome doubted that the structure of the hallway was like this originally. She watched, growing tense as the corridor stretched endlessly. Finally, they emerged into a dark, round room, a murky, purple orb floating the middle.

“Welcome.” A voice called from the shadows, appearing by the purple globe. Kagome snarled as Tsubaki appeared from the shadows, her vicious and dangerous face twisted into an evil smirk.

Inuyasha growled, red leaking into his eyes at the sight of her. What he wouldn't give to bite off her head for all she had done. Killing Levion, forcing Silva to help her weave the desert spell, cursing all the lives in Southern Domain, she made him feel ill. He never thought he could hate someone as equally as Naraku.

As though called by his thoughts a deep rumble of laughter echoed through the room, and Naraku himself made an appearance. “Welcome to the remains of Northern Domain.” He said.

“Shut up you fucking bastard and tell me where the hell my daughter is!” Inuyasha hissed.

“Temper, temper. Here we are in the great castle that used to be Lord Levion's beautiful home. Well, I suppose now that the fool is dead, this castle shall be mine completely.” Naraku lulled menacingly.
“Don't you dare talk about him that way!” Kagome bellowed.

“Levion was a fool till the end.” Tsubaki said slowly.

“Shut the hell up!” Kagome growled.

“Enough chit-chat. Tell me where my daughter is NOW!” Inuyasha demanded, his eyes burning red for an instant.

“Oh, but don't you see? She's right in front of you.” Tsubaki smiled.

“What!”

Naraku and Tsubaki stepped out of the way, showing the glowing purple orb behind them. Kagome squinted at whatever they were inferring too, but all she could see of the poison colored sphere was the smoke that swirled inside it. Then it was Inuyasha's yell that made her see what was really there.

“Silvana!”

“No…” Tears filled Kagome's eyes. Inside the cage, Silva was curled into a tiny ball of silver, her eyes closed.

“Ah, I'm afraid it's not too easy.” Tsubaki hissed.

“If you want her back, you'll have to go through me first.” A voice resounded, and the long forgotten face of Hiten appeared in the room, his spear-like weapon in his hands.

“Of course, I'm here too.” Another voice came. This time it was a well-armored man who appeared from the shadows, green markings adorning his face.

“The hell are you?” Inuyasha snarled.

“I'm here on behalf of Bankotsu. Of course, I was looking to spill some blood too. Call me Suikotsu.”

“It's been a while, hasn't it, Inuyasha?” Hiten snarled.

“Can't say that I'm particularly happy about the reunion.” Inuyasha hissed through narrowed eyes.

“My, seems that an interesting battle in approaching.” Tsubaki said from behind Hiten and Suikotsu. “This should prove to be entertaining.”

“Shut up, bitch.” Inuyasha said, crackling his knuckles. Kagome could tell that his patience was wearing thin and with Silva still in danger…

“Hey, Suikotsu. Inuyasha's mine. I have a bit of a grudge to settle.” Hiten smiled darkly.

Suikotsu made a face. “Oh too bad, I was hoping for a challenge.” He turned to Kagome. “I'll have to settle for the little girl instead.” Kagome narrowed her eyes.

`Kagome.' Inuyasha called through their link. `When I give the signal, I want you to release all of your host energy at once. If you can, send some purifying energy with it.'

`But if I do that, I can't heal you if something happens.'

`So? What's the point if we don't survive this battle.'

`Alright, whenever you're ready.' Suikotsu readied his stance. The sword-like claws on his knuckles pointed in Kagome's direction. That same moment, Hiten prepared himself for his fight with Inuyasha.

In a second, the entire area flashed with light. In two, Kagome had jumped away from Suikotsu when he reached to slash her across the chest. Jumping to the side when he attempted to attack her again, Kagome pulled on her miko energy just as Suikotsu tried to cut off her arm. The sudden barrier that erupted around her caused him to fall backward and almost into Hiten.

Meanwhile, Inuyasha was struggling to dodge the lightning spells that Hiten was striking at him. Rushing away from a powerful thunder attack, Inuyasha's eyes flared for an instant. The next attack almost hit his ear, but, luckily he had jumped to the side, getting close enough to sweep his leg under Hiten, making him fall. With Hiten down, Inuyasha pulled the sword from his hip, but Hiten had scrambled to his feet. Inuyasha swung the blade at him, but Hiten dodged, sent another lightning attack at Inuyasha. This time, it hit Inuyasha before he could evade it, cutting into his shoulder, the smoking wound making him hiss in pain.

“Marvelous.” Tsubaki chirped.

“Inuyasha!” Kagome called, worried, but swung her attention back at Suikotsu who was still attempting to cut her into little pieces. “You should learn to pay attention to the task at hand, little girl.”

“Shut up!” Kagome yelled, tugging again on her miko energy and pulling a light bright enough to blind him.

“AHH!” Suikotsu yelled as he covered his eyes. Kagome concentrated, pulling her energy out and trying to mend it into shape. Sending another blinding light at Suikotsu, Kagome gathered her energy, creating a spiritual bow, but her spell casting was too slow as Suikotsu swing his blades in his blindness and slashed Kagome on her upper arm.

The small scream from Kagome let him know where she was and she was a little too late in jumping out of the way when the blades managed to get a small cut into her cheek.

`He's too fast.' Kagome huffed, jumping out of the way as Suikotsu attacked relentlessly, his eyes no longer useful as he relied on Kagome's breathing to find her. Kagome barely had time to cast anything, and without an arrow to go with her bow she was defenseless as she hurried to avoid his attacks, her hand holding her injured arm.

Taking a chance, just as Suikotsu was about to swing, Kagome dashed underneath his arm, kicking him hard in the stomach with all her might. Suikotsu groaned and staggered as Kagome rushed to complete her spell. Seconds later, Suikotsu rushed to attack Kagome, his blades swinging toward her when…

Kagome panted as her purity arrow hit Suikotsu straight in the chest, breaking through his armor. He stood frozen, his arm still in the air. Blood sprang from where the arrow had touched him, spilling onto the floor. The next moment he was engulfed in light as the arrow's power came into his body. With a flash of light, the arrow's purity had dissolved Suikotsu's maimed dead body. Kagome fell to her knees panting, but rushed to stand as she turned to Hiten.

Hiten and Inuyasha were clashing. Weapon against weapon, sword against thunder lance, wind against lightning. Kagome panted, trying to focus. Wobbling, she tried to create another arrow. The fighting between Hiten and Inuyasha was intense, flashes of lightning and the clangs of sword against spear. They were both moving so fast, it was hard for Kagome to concentrate on who was who.

Pulling another arrow out of her power, Kagome aimed for Hiten, but he was so fast. “Please hit.” She hissed in pain when the wound on her arm protested, but Kagome brought the bow back, aiming for Hiten and trying her best not to hit Inuyasha.

Inuyasha managed to hit Hiten in the stomach with his foot. As he staggered for a moment, Inuyasha rose to his feet, swinging his sword, but Hiten recovered and dodged, all the while trying to hit Inuyasha with a thunder spell. Inuyasha panted, trying to rush out of the way of Hiten's continuous spells. He was so fast, Inuyasha barely had time to cast or prepare for the next blow.

Lightning erupted in front of him, sending painful waves through his body. Inuyasha fell to the ground, clutching his sword for support. “Well, well, any last words?” Hiten snarled as he towered over him, pointing his lance at his nose.

`Not now.' Inuyasha snarled, his heart beating thunderously. Hiten pulled his lance back to attack and-

A blinding light later and the lance flew away and into the wall, seconds before it was about to cut Inuyasha's neck. Hiten turned stunned to see that Kagome's bowstring was vibrating across the room.

“Why you-” Hiten made a move to attack her then, blood fell into the ground. Kagome stood, eyes wide and motionless. Hiten looked down at her frail form, and then fell to the ground with the Tetsusaiga imbedded deep into his back.

Kagome collapsed on her knees, panting. “Are you alright?” She heard Inuyasha say.

“I'll live.” She replied.

“Hmph, what weaklings they turned out to be.” Naraku smiled evilly. “Still good for entertainment.” He said.

“You sick bastard…” Said a panting Inuyasha as he got to his feet, Kagome doing the same. “You don't even care if your allies die?” He snarled.

“If they die, they are too weak and fail me. I have no use for the weak in my dominion.” Naraku smirked. “And shouldn't you worry for something of greater importance.”

A scream filled the room. Kagome gasped and covered her mouth fearfully. Inuyasha stood, fangs appearing as he snarled wider. Silva was screaming, the mist in the sphere she was in attacking her like acid.

“Naraku, it's done. The curse is complete.” Tsubaki said as she walked around the sphere, ignoring the child's tragic wails.

“Good. You should be happy, Inuyasha. You'll get your adorable little girl back. Now that the last of her power has been taken for the desert spell, she won't have to stay with us anymore.” Naraku said sweetly.

“YOU BASTARD!” Inuyasha made a move to attack him, but Naraku quickly said, “Ah, ah, you wouldn't want something happening to her would you.”

Inuyasha stopped, growling, “You fucking…”

“YOU'RE AN ASSHOLE!” Kagome yelled.

Naraku laughed, “Oh, sticks and stones. I'll give her back to you, assuming you can break her cage before she dies.”

`Kagome, release all your energy NOW!'

Without hesitating, Kagome yelled, releasing all her power as well as Inuyasha's. The combination of pure miko, demon and sorcerer energy attacked Naraku and Tsubaki like a plague. Tsubaki screamed and fled.

“What?” Naraku growled as the power seemed to melt away his body like wax. He hissed and then howled, disappearing, but his voice loamed in the air. “This will not be forgotten. I was going to allow you to see your little girl one last time before she dies, but now I don't believe I will. Every drop of air inside that sphere is like a deadly poison. Weapons and spells have no effect on it from the outside.”

With a demented laugh, Naraku's presence vanished. Kagome collapsed, out cold from the release of power.

“Silva!” Inuyasha ran up to the cage. Cracks had appeared in the cage's outer wall from Kagome's attack. Inuyasha rushed forward, pushing his arm into the cracks. The sphere glowed a dark shimmer and suddenly, Inuyasha's arm began to steam, just as it did for the barrier earlier that very day.

Silva continued to scream from inside the ball, the purple mist making her tender skin burn. His arms was burning, but Inuyasha pushed the pain aside as he forced his way through the sphere.

“Silva, don't you dare give up, you hear me! I didn't raise you to quit!” He yelled. Silva cried out again, trashing about.

“I know you can hear me!” Inuyasha yelled, clawing into the barrier, his fingers making it partway through the glass-like wall of the sphere. His entire arm was aching, and Inuyasha fought with the urge to pull it back, hissing the in the pain.

Sweat was now sliding down his face. Silva gave another wail and then became silent and unmoving. Inuyasha's heart skipped a beat. “Silva, please listen to my voice! Don't you want to be free again. To come back home! Don't give in!”

An ear twitched in response to him. Silva curled her arms around herself and let out a wail. A weak beam of light escape her body, attacking the walls of her prison and creating deep cracks. She stopped moving again. With a great strength he didn't know he had, Inuyasha braced his legs, and pushed himself straight into the sphere, breaking into it.

The sound of shattering glass filled the room and splinters of the sphere fell everywhere. Inuyasha panted, holding his injured arm. Blood feel to the floor. His arm was steaming and covered with deep cuts. Some of the flesh had burned from his fingers. It suddenly went numb and all the pain and feeling in his arm vanished, lying limp at his side.

Regaining himself, Inuyasha rushed toward the now broken sphere. A strange, purplish liquid dripped from inside it. Inuyasha walked toward Silva's body as it lay unmoving in the middle.

With his uninjured arm, he managed to lift her as gently as he could, holing her against his chest. “Silva…” He could feel his heart breaking, looking at her pale, unmoving face, lifeless. She didn't stir or move, and Inuyasha felt a sudden, powerful and potent wave of despair.

Then it came, that wonderful sound. A faint heartbeat reached his ear. Inuyasha's eyes watered at the sound. Silva made the tiniest moan and cried, “Papa…”

Letting out a breath he didn't know he was holding, Inuyasha forgot all about the pain his body was in, where he was, that there was a war to fight, everything. All that mattered was that tiny and sweet heartbeat he could hear from the little girl resting on his arm.

The castle around them began to shake. Torn from his blissful moment, Inuyasha turned to find Kagome where she had collapsed. Reaching her, he tried nudging her awake with his knee, one of his arms was numb and useless, the other holding Silva. “Kagome.”

Kagome moaned, turning, and getting on all fours. “What happened?” She croaked.

“We have to get out of here.” Inuyasha urged.

“Right.” Without really thinking, Kagome used the last but of Inuyasha's power that she still had, and managed to transport them out of the crumbling palace.

()()()()()()()

Inuyasha stared a the palace fall into rubble from the distance. It was lucky that Kagome had a little bit of energy left. It wasn't enough to take them far, but out of the castle and across the desert was plenty.

Kagome stood at his side. Now that her mind had cleared she suddenly saw the bloody wound on Inuyasha's shoulder and arm and gasped.

“Your arm.” She said sadly.

“It's fine.” He muttered. Kagome's eyes wandered to his injured shoulder and the child on his other hand.

Kagome wanted to swoon. “No way.” She though. Silva was that small? She saw the little girl resting against Inuyasha's arm, her head on his shoulder. In fact, she was the only a few inches shorter than Inuyasha's entire arm. Kagome could understand that she was only four, but to be the size of a small puppy, literally, it made her dizzy.

“Is she…” Kagome said suddenly, remembering, but was afraid of finishing the sentence.

“Mind holding her for a second.” Inuyasha said as he held out his left arm to Kagome. Gently, Kagome pulled Silva from him, and held the girl close to her chest. Her arm hurt from the open cut there, but she ignored it. Silva made a small cry but remained unconscious, telling Kagome that she was alive.

Inuyasha pulled the Tetsusaiga from his hip with his left hand. His arm and his shoulder, from when Hiten had hit him, were pulsing, but he ignored it as he ripped open a portal with the sword (with a great amount of difficulty).

“Let's take her home.” He said to Kagome holding out his left arm. Kagome was about to protest because of his condition, but she softly transferred Silva to him, nonetheless.

“Yeah, let's take her home.”

Did I scare you guys for a moment there? Well anyways, writing this chapter was REALLY hard because to the detail of the fighting and/or making it dramatic enough. I really hoped you enjoyed, and please let me what you think.

By the way, I was going to be evil and end it when Kagome transported them out of the palace, but I decided against it. ^_^ Hope you liked it. Till next time. I love you guys.
