Chapter Twenty-Six: Till the End

Three days passed as Kagome and Inuyasha inched toward the Eastern capital. By day they rested, by night they moved and attacked. Soon, they had reached the midpoint of the desert with only halfway left to get to the city. By Inuyasha's count, they had six days to reach the capitol, kill Naraku, and get out.

So far the fighting was going well. They hadn't lost any members, though they did not escape several terrible injuries, and news had been brought to them that Sango, Miroku, and Jordan were all doing well. However, Kagome could see that Inuyasha was on edge. When she asked him, he shrugged it off and said it was just battle anxiety.

He'd gone three days without sleep, sitting down was enough of a luxury, and though Kagome would admit she herself lacked slumber as well, she would prefer that he get a chance to close his eyes for a few hours. The nighttime raids had gone well, but were draining and the soldiers were losing morale. It was as though the desert was draining their confidence. The people were not used to such torrid temperatures and the fighting was continuous. Even though Kagome helped Inuyasha keep an equal-share system of sleep time and work time for the warriors, most of them were already tired from the night's endeavors and never felt rested enough.

Small arguments arose from time to time. Several of their fighters complained that it was too hot to sleep and that they should limit their battle time to the daylight, but Inuyasha growled and towered over whoever complained. Kagome had to agree with him when he said that it was harder to fight in the heat; they would be at a disadvantage. Not to mention that water was running low and the guardsmen during the day always complained of thirst.

Kagome soon found herself taking care of the fighters' spirits. She did her best to keep their confidence up and make them look toward the positive. Fighting was straining enough; rest time didn't have to be a battle as well. Besides, she felt when she couldn't help Inuyasha with battle plans, the least she could do was make sure that their soldiers had the ability and drive to fight.

Another day passed and warriors appeared in the distance, bringing Inuyasha and Kagome good news. Sango and Jordan's group had secured the surrounding areas. All that was left was to take down the rest of the battalions on their way and they would be in the capitol. At first Inuyasha had smiled at how well things were going but then his face became grim, and he had kept up that face for the rest of the day.

When Kagome had approached him later, intent to make him speak of what worried him so, he replied, “Things are going too easy. I feel like something's off.” He'd been reclining his back against a wooden chair, facing the ceiling of the small tent.

“What do you mean?” Kagome asked him.

He crossed his arms, staring sardonically upward. “It feels too good to be true. Forgive me for sounding negative, but it doesn't seem like Naraku, with his well-laid plan, would put up such a weak front.”

Kagome bit her lip. “So you're saying this could be a trap?”

He leaned forward, rubbing his temples with his fingers. “I'm saying we should not let our victories go to our heads. We should keep on our toes.”

He'd been right. Early the next morning as they prepared for another raid, the enemy snuck up on them. It was quite a turn around. They had seen his group approaching in the distance, and sent out a team to slow them down. To Inuyasha's indignation, two men escaped and eight of their fighters were dead. They traveled even closer to the capital that evening, till they could feel the dark city's aura from a few miles away. However, though they were close to their objective, Inuyasha felt heavy unease about the two demons that escaped. He told Kagome to be prepared for anything in the morning, unsure of what was going to happen.

The nighttime was quiet, not a single swirl of sand, or a gust of wind. Scouts returned from the area and said that nothing seemed out of the ordinary but both Kagome and Inuyasha remained apprehensive. Messengers from Sango, Miroku, and Jordan's teams arrived, telling them that Sarina and Suzuna took down the last remaining battalions around the capital.

All that remained was for Kagome and Inuyasha to infiltrate the town under their combined armies' cover and kill Naraku. Inuyasha could scarcely believe that their rag tag plan had brought them this far, but he had quickly whipped the thought from his mind. As Jordan had said, when this plan was put into action, there was no room for doubts. He vaguely wondered how she was faring.

Most of the fighters had been pacing nervously. No one was able to sleep, but Kagome was persistent enough to try and get Inuyasha to rest. When the moon had risen above his head, Kagome had come and patted him on the shoulder to get his attention. He was staring out into the dessert, mentally meditating in preparation when Kagome called his name.

“You should try to get some sleep.” She looked at the bags under his eyes. “You've hardly slept at all these past five days.”

“Neither have you.” He answered; his eyes were wide open. Despite his want for sleep, Inuyasha found that he couldn't slip into unconsciousness. Every moment his eyes touched he'd worry that he'd left something undone. Surprisingly, perhaps due to his half demon heritage or the fact that his bond with Kagome had grown stronger over the past few days, he didn't seem too fatigued.

Still, Kagome tried insisting that he sleep. “Why don't you go lie down for a bit? I can keep watch.” She offered.

Inuyasha shook his head. “No thanks. I'm fine.”

The girl at his side huffed, placing her hands on her hips. “Always the stubborn one.”

“Always the pushy one.” He countered, smirking to himself.

Kagome let her hands drop to her sides, looking at him seriously. “I'm just worried about you.” She said.

In his mind, Inuyasha thought that lack of sleep was the least of his problems, but he didn't want to worry her. The last thing he would need is for Kagome to find out about his condition and loss her concentration in battle. She'd be in danger and that would bring about another wave of guilt that Inuyasha was sure he couldn't handle. The idea that Kagome would fret about the poison in his body and get hurt because of it bothered him more then the thought of his imminent death.

“There's no point if I go to sleep now. The sun will be rising soon. Besides, I don't feel sleepy and it's only temporary insomnia. I'll be fine.” He reassured her. Kagome didn't look convinced.

The air began to feel warm as the retched sun appeared from the east. As the sky became brighter, the soldiers prepared themselves, reluctantly covering themselves with armor and equipping weaponry. Kagome gave Inuyasha a small fraction of the energy she was carrying within her and it wasn't long before they stood a short distance from the capital, the dark castle in the middle looming beyond ominously. Their soldiers formed a half circle and everything stood still. If their heartbeats could be heard in the stillness, they would faster then raindrops in a storm. The soldiers inched closer to the city gates, slowly, cautiously.

Kagome could hear her own heart and how it thumped in her throat violently. Somewhere in the distance she heard the slow sounds of a bell ringing, and then all hell broke lose. In an instant the gates to the city had opened and hordes of demons and fighters came out, dropped from the sky, and appeared beneath their feet. Caught up in the pandemonium and surprise, half their fighters lost their initiative, a few men dropping to the floor dead.

Kagome let herself panic for only a moment before she regained herself, firing her first shot high into the air, the droplets of purification energy making the demons surrounding her useless. Then it everything was blurry and fast paced. Kagome heard screams, roars from her allies, sparks were seen in the distance, and the wave of Inuyasha's sword tearing through demons reached her ears as she ran across the battlefield, trying to find an open path into the city.

She gasped, jumping to the side as a giant troll-like creature with a fat belly came thundering toward her, its huge club barely missing her head when she ducked down from the swing. “Kagome!” The creature fell to the floor with a thud as Kagome saw Miroku push and swing his staff while running toward her

“What are you doing here? You're supposed to get into the-” he stabbed an enemy with the end of his staff as it ran up to his side with its sword raised, “castle!” He huffed, deflected a few more beasts with his spiritual power.

“It's not like-” Kagome ducked as a flying, parrot-like demon flew over her head, its claw swiping off a few of her stray hairs. Kagome pulled an arrow just as the thing zoomed down from the sky, its target: her. Before she could let the thing squish her into the sand, Kagome let her arrow go free and the monster became a harmless bird when touched by the arrow's tip.

“It's not like I can get there with a war in my way!” Kagome called back to Miroku, running up to him as he took on five fighters at once with his barrier and staff. Kagome was barely reaching him when another enemy broke away from the crowd, running toward her, sword in hand. Kagome inhaled quickly and whacked him hard with the metallic end of her silver bow

Miroku let his barrier drop slightly, letting Kagome into the blue shield around him. “Leave this battle to us, Kagome. You and Inuyasha need to get inside that city.” He panted, sending another three demons flying with the end of his staff.

Kagome pulled out the arrows from her back, looking through the inside of Miroku's barrier. “How?” She asked urgently, firing three arrows at once. They flew in a straight line, obliterating many till they fell when they ran out of energy.

“There's way too many. How do you expect me to even get close to the city! It's taking all of our strength just keeping them from killing us!”

A few more demons flew off of the barrier when they tried to attack it, and Kagome could see cracks forming in Miroku's shield. He looked tired.

“Miroku! Are you-”

“I was hoping it wouldn't come to this.” He pulled out a black piece of paper from his robes and threw it above his head, stabbing the end of his staff through it.

“Get out of the way!” He ordered Kagome, pushing her out of the barrier. They landed a short distance away and when Kagome looked back, her eyes widened as a huge black hole had appeared in the middle of the desert, sucking in any demon that was unfortunate to come by it.

“What the hell?”

“That's the wind tunnel. We better get out of here before it pulls us in too!”

Kagome chased Miroku without a second glance, deflecting as many demons with her bow till they both stopped for air in the middle of the catastrophe.

“This is bad.” Miroku puffed. “Who knows how many demons are waiting to come out from behind those walls.”

The enemies spotted them and lunged. Kagome instinctively threw a barrier around herself and Miroku, making the two of them disappear. He followed her into the eye of the battleground. There was fighting everywhere. It was almost impossible to tell their allies apart from the enemy.

“Jordan!” Kagome screamed suddenly, seeing her fighting close by, her twin swords drawn. She and Miroku ran up to her, blowing away the dozens of monsters as they ganged up on Jordan all at once. Jordan looked about, her eyes widening as she searched for her invisible help. Kagome let her barrier drop and Jordan gasped when she saw the two of them.

“Why aren't you in the city?!” She demanded, stabbing one sword into a soldier that rushed toward her from the front and another into the demon that snuck up on her from behind. Kagome deflected more waves of attacks while Miroku pierced his staff through one demon and threw the creature toward another.

“I'd gladly go in there and kill that bastard Naraku myself if I could!” Kagome shouted back to Jordon. Dozens of demons suddenly surrounded them and, before they knew it, Miroku, Jordan, and Kagome were trapped, the walls of the circle surrounding them made by their enemies.

“Any ideas?” Miroku asked a second before the demons ran forward for the kill. Kagome didn't even have an instant to prepare, but suddenly the air became cold, and Kagome looked wide-eyed at the giant ice-shell that surrounded the three of them.

“This won't last for long!” Jordan warned. “Kagome,” She turned toward her as monsters attacked the outside of the shield, trying to break through, “would you mind being my host for one more time?” Jordan extended her hand. Without thinking, Kagome took it and felt the cold seep into her as her energy was taken away.

“They're cracking the walls!” Miroku warned, bringing up his staff. In the second that Jordan had begun casting her spell, the enemies were already climbing on top of the ice-shell and stabbing it with their swords.

“They're going to breath through!” Miroku yelled in a worried voice as the crack above them became deeper. Then out of nowhere the demons were cut in half as a huge projectile circled around their shield.

Miroku looked about, following the weapon's path till he spotted a familiar figure catching it. “Sango!” Miroku smiled as his wife appeared, taking down three demons at once.

Jordon let the shield drop. “How's it going?” She asked, panting.

“My flanks are managing to keep them off. How they are doing it, I don't know, but we'll,” Sango ripped through another few monsters that ran toward her with her giant boomerang, “be screwed if another wave comes! We need to get into that capital and I mean now!”

“Miroku!” Jordan ordered. “You and Sango keep those bastards busy while I'm casting!” She said. Husband and wife nodded at her orders, spreading around Kagome and Jordan, killing any demon that came at them.

“Your hand, Kagome.” Jordan lifted her palm and Kagome took it. A blue thread from Jordan's wrist wrapped itself around hers. The cold she felt earlier returned.

A layer of dark, purple clouds covered the sky and enemies and allies stood alike, wondering where the light from the sun had gone. Jordan weaved a shining blue energy thread around herself, as though pulling the clouds in out of nowhere with an imaginary lasso. Kagome let the coldness she felt in her skin take over her, then she released the energy and it spread across the battleground like a wave of while light.

Jordan raised her arm and the blue thread un-looped from her and flew toward the sky. “Icicle Rain!” Jordan shouted and the clouds ripped open, deadly blades of frozen water rained down, stabbing any enemy in its wake, while their friends were protected by barriers emitted by Kagome.

The spell weaved through the battlefield like a disease, killing whoever that was unprotected with its touched. Jordan fell to the sand, gasping. Kagome dropped to her knees, when the backlash of the spell subsided, and pulled Jordan so that she could rest her head on her shoulder. She was a pale as ice.

“Jordan? Are you all right?” Kagome called frantically. Jordan opened her eyes, moaning.

“How's it look?” She puffed.

Kagome lifted her head to take in their surroundings. All she could see was that ice covered a lot of the sand, enemies with giant glass-like blades, lying dead in them while their soldiers moved about, using the temporary reprieve to regroup and tend to those who were still alive. Their numbers had greatly dwindled, Kagome noticed. A quarter of their fighters were dead.

“It looks good. That was one big stunt you pulled.” Kagome panted. Jordan pulled herself upright, wobbly.

“My lady,” Miroku panted, “that was amazing!”

“Don't rejoice!” Jordan scolded him. “This is far from over.” She pointed beyond them.

The gates of the city had opened again, and more demons were emptying outward, standing in front of the city while Inuyasha's forces stood on the other side. The two adversaries stared at each other in silence.

“Kagome!” Inuyasha appeared from the distance and skidded to a stop in front of them. “Was that you?” He demanded. Kagome shook her head, pointing to Jordon. “All I did was the barriers.” She told him.

“Damn, and there a still more.” Inuyasha hissed, looking across to the city. “What are they waiting for?” He said aloud. Kagome blinked. Why weren't the enemies rushing forward to attack again? Were they intimidated by Jordan's show of power?

The wind whipped past them, colder now that it was touched by Jordan's power. It was as though time had stopped again. The demons stood in front of the capitol gates, stoically staring at them under the cloudy sky. Jordan pulled out her swords, her eyes dark as she stared beyond, fixated on a single point.

“So the bastard has decided to show himself.” She snarled. Inuyasha widened his eyes, looking from Jordan to where she was glaring. He growled. Kagome, Sango and Miroku joined when they noticed that Naraku and Tsubaki had come out from the castle, standing in front of their long line of demon hordes.

Kagome felt herself getting colder one more time. She turned her eyes to Jordan, seeing her cast a new spell. A blue energy came forth from her, it twisted and turned, taking shape like water vapors and then Kagome was staring shocked a giant blue and silver, transparent dragon.

Inuyasha grabbed Kagome's hand, his eyes blazing as he stared out into the demons. Jordan climbed onto her silver dragon, casting once more. Kagome stared out into the enemies, wondering once again why they wouldn't move.

Again, the battle erupted in a slit second and it ended the same way: with a show of Jordan's awesome power. She stood, gasping as her silver dragon evaporated in the middle a heap of enemy corpses. Not too far from her Kagome and Inuyasha defeated the last dozen enemy survivors as their still living allies roared with victory.

“Jordan? Are you all right?” Sango asked her when she came near.

The sorceress, sweaty and pallid, looked up and smiled smugly. “I'm giving them hell.” She replied.

Kagome and Inuyasha, with their superior hearing, smirked a small distance away, looking across the battlefield to where Naraku and Tsubaki stood, unaffecting by the fact that their numbers against them had suddenly diminished to nothing. For a long time there was another pause, and then Naraku and Tsubaki made their way to where Sango, Miroku, Jordan, Inuyasha and Kagome had stood.

“Bravo.” Naraku said as he walked closer. They watched him wearily, hearts thumping, glaring at him and his partner.

“You managed to defeat a thousand enemies and it's almost midday.” He clapped. “I thought you would have been dead by now.”

Inuyasha growled. Kagome grabbed his arm to hold him back. She shook her head when he looked at her. “Hold it. If you rush in he might kill you.” She hissed in a warning whisper.

“And what a great show of power,” Tsubaki pointed toward Jordan, who's face had flushed with a righteous anger at her brother's killer, “by none other then another one of the four souls.” Four pairs of wide eyes turned to Jordan. She shrugged, not paying any attention to her comrades. Only she and Tsubaki existed. Tsubaki stared at her with a confident, yet bored smile.

Jordan made a move to lung at her but the screams of her comrades brought her to a halt. She turned to see that Kagome has clutched her throat suddenly, wheezing as though a robe was constricting around it. Inuyasha, releasing what was happening, or rather who was causing it, sent a hateful glare toward Naraku and Tsubaki.

“Now don't do anything I wouldn't do, half-breed, Jordan. Unless you want that girl's head to roll.” Kagome tried fighting against it. Her head began to spin and she pounded her fist against the floor. The pressure release and she stayed on her knees puffing in air.

“If you come willingly Jordan, we'll let the girl live…for now.” Tsubaki cooed as though watching Kagome suffer was like telling her child a bedtime story.

Jordan snarled at her without saying anything. Then she took a step forward. Kagome coughed and begged Jordan not to move with a raspy voice but her former teacher didn't even look back at her.

“Jordan stop!” Inuyasha stepped forward, but Tsubaki suddenly formed a fist and Kagome began convulsing in pain once more. He looked from her shaking body to the retreating form of Jordan. Rushing back to his host he tried helping her break through Tsubaki's pull, but the hold on her was too strong.

“Sango, Miroku.” He called. “Take care of her.” He said, turning with the full intent of stopping Jordan.

“Not another step half-breed.” Tsubaki warned and Kagome screamed as though she were being ripped to pieces.

Inuyasha growled, vexed, the exact same moment Jordan reached a small distance away from both Tsubaki and Naraku. “Why so silent in the face of death? I hate your noble antics. What do you care if one girl dies?”

Jordan did not reply. “I grow tired of this. Destroy her.” Naraku said tiredly behind Tsubaki.

“My pleasure.” She rushed forward to pull Jordan's heart out, but Jordan jumped out of her way, making a crystal sword appear out of nowhere and getting a nice slice across Tsubaki's back as she tried regaining her balance. The demon's blood fell to the sand like poisonous droplets of venom, steaming as they touched the ground.

Tsubaki gave a furious growl. “You wench!” She balled her hands into fists and Jordan could hear Kagome give another wail of pain.

Distracted, Jordan had only a moment to get out of the way as a giant serpent appeared from Tsubaki and tried to bite off her arms. She twisted her sword with a flick of her wrist and cut the snake in half but her moment of short victory was over. Once she had lowered her weapon, Tsubaki swooped toward her, her clawed hands ready.

Heart thumping, Jordan brought her sword up, stabbing Tsubaki in the instant. Unfortunately, Tsubaki managed to get her hands into her shoulder and Jordan staggered from the poison leaking into her system. A dirty trick, she growled. She held her collarbone, rasping, looking up at Tsubaki's smug face as she loomed over her. “Like it? It's a new ability. Thanks to Naraku.” She brought up her hand, a snake formed around her arm, it's slobbering fangs barred toward Jordan. “I want that heart!” Tsubaki screeched, her eyes wide and deranged. “I'll destroy you just like I did your brother!”

The snake came down like lightening. Jordan saw it coming; it's slit eyes bored into her irises. Survival instinct kicking in, she whipped her head to the side, the snake hitting dirt behind her. A switch of a blade and it was all over. Jordan gasped, pain leaking into her body.

But it was nothing to the sheer joy she felt at finally having killed her brother's murderer. She pulled the bloody sword out of Tsubaki's chest, the tip of the weapon having frozen her enemy forever in a deathly ice. “For you, brother.”

“Jordan!” Inuyasha yelled, happiness coating his voice as Kagome came to a stand.

His smile suddenly morphed into a shocked expression. Jordan stood confused at the sudden change with she felt it. Something came out from her chest. Her eyes narrowed, she turned. A long claw, protruding from Naraku's bony finger, pierced her right in the chest. She felt her energy drain. The needle like dagger was pulled out of her and Jordan hacked, blood burning her throat.

She fought against the darkness what wanted to overtake her. “Stubborn as ever.” He said. “Your heart has been destroyed. Die.” He said.

Jordan brought her crystal sword up. “You've only destroyed…half.” She coughed, bringing her sword up with her trembling hand.

“How?” Naraku hissed.

“It's called heartbreak, Naraku. You wouldn't know it because you don't have a heart.” Jordan stabbed the sword into her chest, piercing through the other half.

“You won't take my power like you took Levion's! I'll destroy my own life!”

Naraku hissed and tried killing her himself, but it was too late. Jordan pushed the sword deeper in her wounds. The last of her strength was found, and with ever ounce of her being, Jordan forced it out.

A shinning blue light briefly blinded Inuyasha as he rushed toward Jordan, his eyes stinging. The light cleared suddenly and he saw Jordan's body touch the crisp sand. Storm clouds roared overhead as though thundering with anger. He rushed toward her, relief flooding into him when he saw that her eyes were still open.

“That bitch!” Inuyasha whipped his gaze toward Naraku. “She sealed my accumulated power!” Naraku, his red eyes and colorless face, gave a vicious howl.

Inuyasha didn't know when it happened, but suddenly he found himself staring at Kagome's unconscious body as she floated lifelessly by Naraku's side.

“Kagome!”

“I'll send the rest of my demons to kill you.” Naraku cut across him. “This girl will be the first to die in my all barren world!” With that, the demon disappeared. Without a second thought, Inuyasha rose to go after him, but he suddenly stopped when Jordan let out a low groan.

“Inuyasha!” Sango and Miroku rushed toward him. “Go after him!” He ordered them. They nodded and left.

He kneeled toward her, holding her hand. “Jordan, come on, keep your eyes open.”

Jordan coughed and spoke, her voice gone. All that remained was an almost silent whisper. “Inuyasha…listen to me while I have the chance…”

“Don't talk! You're going to be fine!” He said as he frantically pulled off his sleeve, hoping to cover the bloody wound on her chest.

The corner's of Jordan's blue lips twitched as though she wanted to smile but was unable to. “I destroyed my own heart…there's no way…I came knowing this would happen…Levion knew…The four souls have the power to change the world back, but Naraku has already used my brother to help the spell become permanent…since he could not get mine…he will use a sacrifice.” Jordan coughed.

Inuyasha felt as though his heart would burst. He knew. “That's right. A host makes for the perfect sacrifice. With Kagome's death, the spell will be complete…you…must get to her before that. Save everyone…protect Silva at any cost. If Naraku is unsuccessful with Kagome, he will seek your daughter once more.”

“Silva is a…” He did not want to finish his sentence; a leather bind suddenly constricted his heart. “Jordan, you're wrong. You have to be!” He felt his tears coming out, dripping onto Jordan's face.

“The soul of wisdom dies with me Inuyasha…the soul of courage will die with Silva if you do not stop Naraku now. Get to Kagome before the sun goes down…one last thing: you have to tell her about the poison…tell…” She uttered one more word before her eyes closed and all the warmth disappeared from her body. Inuyasha shook, his hands cold as they touched Jordan's lifeless body. He heard a loud bellow surround him, unknowing he was the source of the sound as he hugged Jordan's body to him.

People from his armies appeared, battered and bruised, they looked down at Jordan with their eyes shinning. Sango and Miroku appeared again while Sarina and Suzuna, screamed into the sky. Sango covered her mouth with her hand as her husband looked away, biting his lip.

Inuyasha, his eyes overcast by his bangs, came to a stand. “Miroku, how does it look?”

It took a moment for Miroku to understand what he was saying. In a shaky voice he said, “Bad. There are demons surrounding the castle again. We would need a miracle to get in there now.”

Inuyasha looked at Jordan one more time. Sarina and Suzuna came up, touching their queen's shoulder. A blue light sprang forth from the sisters and when it faded, Jordan's body was encased in ice.
“Let's give her a proper burial when this is over.” Sarina said to Suzuna.

“You two.” Inuyasha said suddenly and the girls snapped their attention to him. His eyes were still covered, but his voice spoke with so much intensity that the allies near enough to hear him flinched.

“Can you lead an army this big on your own?” He asked.

Sarina and Suzuna smiled fiercely, their eyes fiery. “We'll give them hell like there's no tomorrow.” Suzuna said, shaking her fist.

“They'll pay for killing Jordan!” Sarina seconded. The soldiers roared in agreement. Sarina and Suzuna yelled a cacophonic battle cry toward the clouds. “This is your last fight! You demons are going straight to hell!”

Feeling that he had made the right choice, Inuyasha turned as the sisters began hollering orders to the remaining fighters on their side. Miroku and Sango came to stand by him. “So what do you have in mind?” Miroku asked him.

“I'm going into the capitol.”
