Desert Rose Epilogue
New winds swept through the trees, a signal that spring was coming to an end. The trees' leaves were becoming a light green as though inviting the summer. Though these things marked changed, little had happened in this place since the war ended. After twenty years of fighting in the Great War and then watching the world warp in the Desert War, the inhabitants of the world settled to a soothing veil of calmness. It was the same for the new king of Northern Domain and the Rulers of the West and South.
With his promise kept, King Giana had returned his home country to its crystal splendor. Where there was once only sand, trees grew again. Western Domain was reborn anew, the castle re-made, and the people spreading out of the vast grasslands and forests that was their new home. Great monuments for war heroes were made; many people in the North and South still went to pay their respects to the statues of Jordan and Levion.
On a flower plain, between the large ruins that came up from the ground, a group of people walked. At the front, a young woman, holding a rather excited child, led a few others toward a large manor made out of marble. The boy in her arms spoke animatedly.
“When are we going to go again?”
The girl holding him shook her head. “We just got back.”
“But I want to know when we are going to visit again.” He whined.
“Spend some time at home first.” The girl smiled.
“No fair!” The boy pouted.
As they neared the large house, a lady wearing white and blue robes made her way across the flowers. “And how's my little prince?” She asked with a kind smile when she reached them.
“She's being mean to me!” The boy pointed toward the girl's chin. She stuck her tongue out at him.
“Ayla, you shouldn't tease your brother so much.” The woman shook her head at the girl.
“Oh, but Galan sounds so cute when he's upset.” Ayla giggled.
“You're a meanie!” Galan pouted.
Ayla placed the boy on his feet. He rushed forward and hugged his mother's leg. “Mama!” His mother picked him up and gave him a stronger embrace. “I missed you. Did you have fun at your Uncle's?”
“Lots! Did you know that Rin is learning about her new powers?”
“Oh she is?”
“Uh huh. But she didn't let me watch her spar with Rin.” Galan crossed his arms as he pulled back from his mother and gave his sister a grumpy stare.
“Mama would have killed me if I had.” Ayla shrugged.
“You're making that up!”
“Okay, that's enough.” Mother smiled. “I think you need a nap, young man. You're a little cranky.”
Galan grumbled. “Do I have to? I wanted to stay with Ayleena a little more.” Ayla made a face, but didn't say anything. Galan had grown accustomed to calling his sisters by their full name, something only he could get away with.
“You can play with he later. You should rest after that long journey back home.” That being said, she turned toward the house with the intention of putting her son to bed.
“Um, Mama.” Ayla called.
“Hmm?” She turned.
“Uncle sent some messengers.” The men and women behind Ayla bowed.
“We are honored, Lady Kagome. We have news from Lord Sesshoumaru-”
“Please can you wait until I've spent some time with my children first. Then I will attend to your wishes. I would be honored if you make yourselves at home in the manor.” Kagome said hastily.
“As you wish. Thank you.” The messengers turned their heels and entered the manor.
As they retreated, Kagome turned to Galan, whose golden eyes were already dropping of their own accord. Out of all her children, only Galan was born with the power of sight. However, like his sisters, he was the spitting image of their father. “I better get you to bed mister.” Kagome chuckled.
“But I'm not-” Galan yawned and placed his head on Kagome's shoulder, defeated. Kagome rubbed his back.
“Where's Silva?” Ayla asked as she and her mother began walking into the house.
“She left a few days ago. She wanted to visit Giana and see if she'd improved with her healing abilities.” Kagome said as they entered the foyer. “She wanted me to tell you that she'll be back for the Great Tree Festival.”
“What about Papa?”
“Oh!” Kagome paused in her step. “He's…around.”
“Huh?” Ayla blinked, following Kagome up a staircase.
“The usual, busy taking care of things on our small island.”
“For peacetime, there's so much to do.” Ayla remarked.
“For a diplomat, yes there is.” Kagome opened the door at the top of the stairs and walked into the light room. A soft breeze came in through the large window. She walked toward the soft bed by the wall and placed Galan under the covers. He was asleep moments after his head hit the pillow. Kagome shooed Ayla out of the room, quietly closing the door behind her.
“So, now that our hands are free.” Ayla gave her a fierce hug.
“I hope you don't go back to Sesshoumaru's real soon because it's so quiet here without at least one of you three making a mess of things.”
“We don't get into that much trouble do we?” Ayla said as she let go of Kagome and headed down the stairs.
“It's not a lot of trouble for you, but it is for your father and me. You three are such reckless noblemen.”
“Where's the fun in being normal noblemen?” Ayla stopped at the foot of the stairs. “I think, I'll take a quick nap too. Western Domain feels so far from out little Island.” She kissed Kagome on the cheek and walked off.
With both of them taken care of, Kagome straightened her robes and headed out into the field. As she walked through the blooms she thought about the daunting task of speaking with Sesshoumaru's messengers, and about how so much had changed during the last twenty years.
Ayla and Silva had grown to be clever, charismatic and smiling girls; though they couldn't help but play a few harmless pranks on others, but the people loved them either way. Galan, who she hoped wouldn't get his father's reckless streak, had taken a little after Kagome because of his caring personality, but he was also as quick witted as his daddy despite being only four years old.
Kagome looked down at her hands. Her time as Inuyasha's host had caused a reaction and she now held her own magical powers, along with the gift of slower aging. She barely looked any different from the day she chose to be in this world forever. Kagome never regretted her decision, having joys such as holding Galan in her arms for the first time, and watching the twins grow up with their father.
She looked up to find that she had walked far from the manor and was now at the ruins on the other side of the feild. Kagome smelled a familiar and alluring scent and she ducked under a marble column.
“Lazing on the job?”
He jumped when he heard her voice. Guiltily, he turned and gave her a half smile. “I needed to get away. I've been doing political work all morning.”
“Running away again?” Kagome quipped.
“Only from work.” He stood from where he'd been sitting cross-legged in the middle of the ruins. He pulled her wrist and held her to his chest. “I wish we could forget our responsibilities and just have a quiet no working day.”
“That won't happen too soon. My brother in law sent us a few ambassadors.” Kagome wrapped her arms around his middle.
He rolled his eyes. “Wish he'd get his royal ass here to talk to me himself.”
“I wonder what's he'd do to you if you said that to his face, Inuyasha.” Kagome laughed into his shirt.
“Do we have to go talk to them? Can't we stay here…for a couple of hours.” He smirked suggestively.
Kagome sighed. “I'll make you a deal. We tell Ayla to keep an eye on Galan and we go off and hide after we talk to Sesshoumaru's men.”
Inuyasha kissed her forehead. “I like that idea. Especially since you're running away with me this time.”
“So it's settled.” She felt him squeeze her.
“You really know how to make me happy don't you?”
“That's my job.” Kagome gave him a small kiss on the cheek.
Inuyasha let her go and put an arm around her waist. “So how are Ayla and Galan?”
“Both taking a snooze…and as rambunctious as ever.”
“Our kids wouldn't be themselves if they weren't.” Laughing together, they walked away from the ruins.
