Chapter 3—Desire's Love
Breathing fast and hard, he panted coming to a stop pulling him self through the whirl winds and gusts of dust created.
“Kouga! What brings you here?”
The decision to break had been spontaneous. And well worth it.
“Why aren't you with Dog-breath?”
“Inuyasha? We were tracking a monster that belonged to Naraku when he suddenly parted ways.”
“That's never stopped you from staying with him before.”
She cleared her throat.
“Well, it's sort of complicated…”
He interrupted as he handed her a small bouquet of wildflowers, which she admired appreciatively for about an hour, then pressed flat between the bound pages of some writing tablet he didn't recognize.
“Don't worry. You can depend on me when ever he's not around.”
Smiling, he bowed his head. Puzzled, then frowning, yet not pushing the subject immediately, he toiled over the right words to say not to ruin his rare quiet - and all the more distinguished in her presence.
Schooling his features and willing him self not to sound disappointed he finally braved the probability of frustration.
“Did what?”
Sniffing the air he heard the exterminator and monk discussing their futures a good half mile distance away. Scoffing, he turned away. He wasn't interested.
Noticing the fox kit play with the fire cat within a stone's throw reach from where Kagome stoked the campfire, he relaxed the unease distressing his guard after discreetly ascertaining there were no nearby predators.
For the time being, they were uninterrupted, which he eagerly accepted with relief.
“Crush up my gift.”
Normally, it wouldn't have been an issue, but he was nervous - for one. And it felt instinctively and inexplicably important to him to just know the intent behind that particular gesture, especially since his rival wasn't nosing around causing him unwanted grief with the lashings he always came prepared to counter.
She took her time answering, though he tried not to notice. Then, for a moment, he berated him self for both his foolishness in asking a dumb question and trivial anger directed at her for such a blatant disrespect regarding some thing he gave her - and right in front of his very eyes, no less.
Finally, after relinquishing his thoughts to the winds and nearly forgetting that he even asked a question, she answered.
“To preserve them.”
Baffled, he crossed his legs and risked rejection at the subtle message entailed as he sat next to her.
“Why would you do that?”
Jealous anger cooling, he glanced side ways as she pulled that bound tablet back out.
“I keep everything you give me… to help me remember you.”
Surprised and humbled with such a declaration, he shut up. Nervous again, he wouldn't maintain eye contact and decided to keep his hands to him self.
Never mind the fact that he really opposed that notion.
Never mind that every ounce of his being wanted to touch her, hold her, show affection - and seize an ultimate opportunity to take his advances further with a kiss.
He didn't dare.
Wouldn't. Couldn't. Shouldn't.
It damned well didn't matter what he actually wanted. Most of his youkai consciousness accepted this.
Except for his heart which happened to beat around like resounding gongs inside of his soul.
Her love for him was restricted to friendship - that was a woefully obvious observation without Inuyasha's constant reminder during their snarling and growling duels.
He wished the mutt would return soon so he wasn't left with dealing with her proximity - and her oh-so-heavenly scent. He wanted him to come back because he didn't like being nervous and left to cope with his feelings while she was there - next to him.
Where he wanted her to be; where he was afraid of her being.
The realization startled him and he lay on his side, conversing and arguing with the opposing philosophies and reasoning that made up his genetic self.
The exterminator and monk stepped further away from the site and left to `learn more about each other'.
Liars.
They just wanted to fuck.
He wordlessly added as he eavesdropped on their conversation.
Staring into the firelight as day faded into night, entranced by the flickers and flames, he almost missed the question Kagome asked.
“Hungry?”
Curious, he sat up, watching as she stirred some heated water - and what looked like noodles to him.
Shaking his head, he forced him self out of his muted daze and consented to what ever strange culinary dish she offered.
“Thanks.”
Thoughtful, she peered over to him.
“I wonder where Inuyasha went.”
Dismayed that all Kagome seemed to think about was Inuyasha, he tried to block out the twist and yank of his heart.
Closing his eyes in exasperation, he didn't mention the fact that he was with Kagura about ten or twelve miles away. And he didn't mention that the other priestess - the one called Kikyo - was participating in fleshly pleasures with both of them. Not that he'd volunteer that information.
“Don't worry about him; he'll be fine.”
It was currently his responsibility to safeguard Kagome - to include her heart. He would not let her traipse off and discover the associations that compelled the group to keep closely tight lipped about. Besides, it would take the majority of the night before the dog even considered returning to his woman.
And as impossible as the task of winning her complete devotion and affections seemed, establishing contact with and keeping his current friendship would have to suffice for now. There were no other alternatives.
Sighing, she staggered toward him, taking his dish, and handed him one of her water canteens, he supposed they were called. Tilting his head back he let the water flow down his parched throat.
“Kouga?”
“Hnn?”
“Will you stay up with me and wait until he comes back?”
Relinquishing any jealousy and anger he thought he might have still had, his face softened and his heart thumped hard in his chest; and he relented when the coolness of the night met the heat of her breath and her words came out through a mist of clouds.
Of her own volition she asked.
He would do fucking anything for her.
