Chapter One: Being Followed

Kagome had this tickling feeling that she was being followed. She brushed it off as the remnants of fright from a recent youkai battle. Tugging her bag firmly over her shoulder, she'd toss open the doors to stare out at the sunlit shrine. Her small feet carried her quickly from the well house, a deep breath of the brisk fall air given as she stopped momentarily to look up at the God Tree of her time. A small smile crossed her lips when she closed her eyes to let the crisp breeze blow through her hair. She always felt at peace here under this tree. Even if she'd had a bad day, she could sit under this tree, and it would all just melt away. The hairs on the back of her neck rose as she once again got the feeling that someone was following her...watching her. She spun around quickly to see if someone was behind her, but was greeted by an empty courtyard and silence.

"Sit boy! "

She got her answer when a loud crash echoed before her. Her smile grew before it bowed into a scowl as she turned to watch as Inuyasha came crashing down through the branches once more. The scowl fell as she watched him struggle to get his face out of a particularly muddy spot. Soon silvery peals of her laughter floated over the shrine, irritating the hanyou even more. Before she could blink, the boy moved so they were face to face and just snarled at her.

“What was that for, bitch?!”

“Inuyasha!”

“Um, sis?”

Kagome turned to see her family standing just a few feet away. Both the boy and girl turned several shades of red, before glaring at each other once more. Kagome's grandfather gave the girl a disdained look, while her mother chuckled. Huffing slightly, Kagome crossed her arms and put her nose in the air. Inuyasha slowly put his hands over his ears, but not before he caught Kagome's words.

“Sit! Sit! Sit! Sit!”

As soon as the hanyou's body made a crater in the ground, Souta ran over to jump on his back. Tossing curses at the boy, Inuyasha would struggle to get up, snarling and growling as Souta and Akira Higurashi laughed. It was the final straw when Souta reached for his ears, and began to rub them softly. Kagome squealed with laughter as Inuyasha neatly flipped Souta and reversed their positions.

"It's not funny, wench."

"We think it is, Inuyasha." came from a giggling Kagome.

"Wench..."

"I told you, I'm not a wench!"

"Kagome, we're going to be late. Souta, why don't you get Inuyasha's ball cap, and he can go with us." interjected Kagome's mother wisely.

When Souta ran off to do her bidding, Kagome sent her mother a baleful look. She could just imagine the mayhem the hanyou would cause at the airport. He'd probably chase the planes with Tetsusagia. Inuyasha just shrugged and slipped his hands into the sleeves of his kimono. He sent Kagome his famous glower, which only increased when her mother plopped the ball cap atop his head. He hated the ball cap as it always smashed his ears. That hurt like a bitch, even though they may not realize it. He whimpered almost slightly, as he was forced to go put Tetsusagia in the house with Kagome's bag. While Grandpa went to get the car, Kagome fussed with his hair and clothes. Inuyasha rolled his eyes and pulled away, stomping over to the tree.

“Come back here! You have leaves in your hair!”

“So?”

“So, I want to get them out.”

Inuyasha replied to that by wildly shaking his head. The leaves and his cap went flying in all directions. Kagome smacked his arm as she bent down to retrieve the cap, before settling it gently onto his head. Looking at her family out of the corner of her eyes, she reached under his cap once more to rub his ears slightly. They pulled apart once Grandpa came around with the car, Kagome laughing as Souta tried to jump inside before it stopped. Kagome sat in the middle, pulling Inuyasha inside with her. Cheeks red, she leaned over his lap to close the door. Inuyasha's claw dug into her wrist as the car began to move, forcing a harsh wince from the girl. With her free hand she patted and rubbed his claw comfortingly, her eyes meeting Akira's in the mirror.

"So tell us about cousin Lokelani again, Mom?" came from Souta as he lounged back in the seat.

"Lokelani is from Hawaii. She's coming to stay with us, for a while. Just until she gets on her feet. Her mother just died, and she's all alone. I want you two to make her feel at home. She's going to be pretty lonely, coming to a whole new country by herself."

"She's nineteen and very beautiful from what her picture showed." interjected their grandfather.

"Yes, you remember her mother, don't you Kagome? She came to visit us the year before you first entered the well."

"You mean Leilani? Yes. She was a very beautiful woman, I loved her hair...but why wasn't Lokelani with her?"

"Lokelani did not want to come. She stayed at home because of school, since she was graduated that year. So Leilani came by herself. I'll never forget those eyes. Inuyasha, you think your eyes are abnormal...Leilani had eyes the color of silver...Lokelani's are a smoky blue color."

"Keh."

By the time they had finished talking, Grandpa was pulling into the airport. Kagome was unaware of the serene smile on her lips as Inuyasha's nose plastered its self to the window of the car. He snarled and growled at the planes landing and taking off, his claw flexing over the empty sheath where Tetsusagia should have been. As soon as the car was parked, he was outside to watch them.

"Are they birds?"

"No, silly, they are airplanes." Kagome replied with a laugh.

"Keh."

Kagome instantly regretted laughing at him, because he became unreadable again. The group walked into the building, to begin their search for Lokelani. They all moved slowly to the large boards filled with flights, dates, and times. Kagome and Souta began arguing quietly. Inuyasha squinted at the board as he tried to figure out the weird squiggles, pretending to read them when Kagome turned to watch him. Finally Souta began pulling on Akira's sleeve to get her attention.

"There it is! Gate twelve!" Souta shouted, pointing up to the board.

"Lets go then, she's probably wondering if we forgot about her."

They made their way through the heavy traffic towards gate twelve without speaking a word. Kagome moved next to Inuyasha, slipping her hand in his as they walked. His tightened on hers briefly, as he sent her a tiny smile. Kagome replied with a smile of her own, before helping to search for her cousin. It was hard to tell with all of the people in the airport. Finally they came to rest at the large windows overlooking the runway.

"Lokelani!" came from her grandfather's lips, as the group stopped.

The young woman turned from the window, to give the group a smile. The light from the window illuminated her slender form, bringing out the glow of her eyes. Inuyasha and Kagome emitted gasps of surprise at the same time, before looking at each other in stunned disbelief...
