Chapter Nineteen: Waiting for a Dream
"Naraku has Lokelani...."There was a wide range of emotion as that statement echoed through the small hut. Sango's eyes showed her concern, while Miroku looked outright worried. Kaede stared at the fire with pity, shaking her head slowly. Minutes of silence ticked by slowly. No one wanted to speak, in fear of the answer. Finally, Sango broke the silence with her soft question.
"How do you know this Kagome?"
"Lokelani sent me a dream. I don't know how, or why...But she showed me what happened. Naraku has her, we have to save her!"
"It isn't that easy. We don't know where he is." Miroku sighed.
"That's why I'm hoping Lokelani sends me another dream."
"What if Naraku catches her and hurts her?" Shippo asked.
"Oi, runt. We'll worry about that later."
"Shippo is right Inuyasha. Ye can't expect him to take her defiance lightly." Kaede declared in Shippo's defense.
Inuyasha sat down by the door, with his back against the wall, glaring at the kitsune. Shippo moved to Kagome's lap, where he patted his friend's arm. The girl sat there trying to be brave, but just beyond her eyes a sheen of tears threatened to spill over. Her hand trembled as she smooted Shippo's bangs back from his face, showing she wasn't quite steady yet. Finally she spoke, her voice determined and quiet.
"Whatever it takes. We have to save Lokelani. She wouldn't send me these dreams if she didn't want to risk anything. I haven't been the best family to her since the reality of her being a hanyou hit me, but she'd still my family. I want...no need...to save her."
"It's about time we go after Naraku." Inuyasha yawned before growling.
He jumped to his feet and moved outside. Everyone peeked through the door to see Sesshomaru coming in the distance. He stopped at the villages edge and waited arrogantly for Inuyasha. The hanyou gave Kagome a warning glance before moving within hearing distance of Sesshomaru. Kagome and the other's followed, weapons in hand. Kirara transformed into her large form, hissing at Sesshomaru loudly.
"Oi. What do you want, bastard?"
"I've come to inquire about the hanyou that was with you. Did you find her remains?"
Ignoring Kagome's soft gasp, Inuyasha snorted. "She aint dead."
With the barest of nods Sesshomaru turned and began walking away. Kagome moved around Inuyasha staring at Sesshomaru's back. She put a hand over her mouth, before sighing.
"Sesshomaru?"
He stopped, but did not look at her.
"Did you have a dream? One with my cousin in it?"
"This Sesshomaru does not dream."
"Her dreams create reality Sesshomaru....She sent me a dream last night...Naraku has her..." Kagome finished, despite the growl coming from Inuyasha.
Sesshomaru looked at Kagome over his shoulder, before walking away once again. Inuyasha snarled at Kagome as he grabbed her arms and pushed her towards the hut again. Kagome hissed at him before moving to speak to Sesshomaru again. He was gone. Stomping her foot, Kagome sent him an irritated glance before storming into the hut. Inuyasha looked at the setting sun and sighed. Judging from the sun's postion, he had about four hours before Kagome went to sleep to make up with her and convince her to sleep in the tree with him. The way things were looking though, it seemed he had little chance of that happening.
As night fell over the village and surrounding lands, the group's spirits grew darker with the knowledge that they were losing time. The chances of Lokelani surviving the night were slim to none. One by one the group fell into the clutches of sleep, until only Inuyasha was left to watch over thier sleeping forms. His ears flattened upon his head as he looked over Kagome, who was curled protectively around Shippo. The young kit was nestled close to Kagome's chest, her arms wrapped around his back. Everyone in a while, Shippo would whimper, causing Kagome's hand to rise and stroke his back. By her scent Inuyasha knew she was sleeping, but the gesture still caught him. She'd make a good mother someday. Barely stifling a yawn, Inuyasha fought to keep his eyes closed. He was unusually drowsy. Tetsusagia dropped to the floor as he too sank into sleeps dark depths.
It felt as though hundreds of drummers were beating upon her skull as though her head was a ceremonial drum. Blurry dual orbs opened slowly, only to smash together quickly as the room spun with a dizzying speed. Pushing herself into a sitting position, she'd waited for the harsh nausea that sent her slender form into dry heaves to stop. She could not remember what happened, just bits and pieces of what she thought happened. There was a tall man in white, with long silver hair and shuttered golden eyes. The sensation of flying, a brisk run on the man's back. There was a forest, with a pool and a waterfall. Lost passions, and hot desires. Her mate...but that's not what she awoke to.
The room was cold and dark, made entirely of stone. Wood ran half way up the wall, dark and old. She was laying upon a hard bed, with only a pillow and a blanket upon it. She was wearing a long black kimono, not her white clothing... Then came the flooding of her senses. The scents of Kagome and the others bombarded her, making the rising nausea inside her to blossom even more. It would be then that the door opened, and the woman entered. Short black hair was pulled up into a ponytail like style, with feathers tucked into the band. A pair of eyes, crimson in color looked at the hanyou girl upon the bed. The woman wore a red and white kimono, a fan at her wrist, and sandals upon her feet.
"Welcome to the waking world." she'd said.
Her tender bare feet touched the cold stone floor as she moved to stand. Her mouth moved wordlessly as her slender form was assaulted by wave after wave of shocks. It started at the soles of her feet and quickly traveled up the length of her body. She fell helplessly onto her back on the bed, unable to do more than stare at the ceiling.
"He will not let you go...You are his Dreamer. " the woman, Kagura, had spoken to her.
After a while, he appeared in the doorway. Tall and wickedly handsome, his crimson gaze seemed to tear straight into her soul. The man said not a word until Kagura had left the room, those crimson orbs never leaving the girl that stared back bravely. He'd then toss her clothing onto the floor just beyond her reach, smirking heavily at the girl's plight.
"What do you want from me?" she asked.
"Your dreams...they are more powerful than the Shikon Jewel...Just imagine the pain I could cause if I controlled your dreams....The people that would be killed...your cousin included." was his reply.
She scrambled backwards as he came forward, bumping into the wooden screen on the wall. It slid to the floor with a thud, causing the bare skin of her arm to come in contact with the walls. Her body jerked as the shocks again ran through her system, before collapsing onto the bed. Crimson met eyes of gold and silver, a smile of pure evil stretching onto his face. He moved to the bed and reached out with a pale hand to grasp her chin.
"With you...I can control all." he smirked.
It came through her, the desire to join the dark side, like a heavy rain swells the streams into rivers. Dual orbs darkened until they were nearly the same black as her pupils. Her body went limp, as she slipped into the forced sleep. She felt him still, prodding her mind. Scenes flew through her head, her capture mostly. She tried to block out the screams and blood as he forced to her kill and burn villages with her dreams. The lands flew by until they were in the mountains...
They fought bravely, the wolves of the East and North. The white female was her first victim, her body torn in two by Lokelani's bloody claws. Her pathetic minions were next. The blood and fur of white wolves stained the grass and clothes the girl wore. A crisp breeze brought the scent of another pack, led by a male and his bumbling idiots. He came like a fierce whirlwind, tossing her hair up and away from her face. Oh, he was a handsome one...This Kouga. Orbs glaring red in her anger, she attacked without a second thought. His men were the first of the three to fall. Slower and weaker than thier leader, they were easy picking for the half crazed female.
The battle with Kouga lasted much longer than she thought it would. In the process, Lokelani's right hand had been severed from her wrist. Blood poured from the wound. Letting out a howl, the female attacked the wolf with greater fervor. Finally, his body landed beneath her bloodied form. Sharp fangs tore at his neck, while her good claw rent his body into pieces....
Kagome woke from her sleep with a series of high pitched screams. Miroku, Sango, Shippo and Kaede rushed to her side, all of them speaking at once to calm the girl before she woke the rest of the village. The confusion made her scream all the more. Shippo whimpered and began to cry, his tiny hands pulling at Kagome's scarf. Sango patted and rubbed her shoulders, while Miroku held her hand. It was finally Shippo's crying and Miroku's deep calm voice that broke through her terror. She hiccuped, staring at them with her big chocolate eyes.
"He made her dream she killed Kouga!"
The looks she received varied from sorrow to disbelief. Shippo shook his head slightly, before looking to Miroku and Sango. Finally he opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. Shooting Kagome a glance, he'd move to sit upon Miroku's shoulder. The monk cleared his throat before glancing up to Kagome.
"Are you sure Kouga would fall so easily to your cousin?"
"If he did, Kagome, then that makes her our enemy." Sango sighed quietly.
Kagome looked over to Inuyasha who remained slumped against the wall, his right hand twitching as he dreamed. Her head canted slightly, before she moved over to tug on his hair. No response. She patted his cheek lightly. No response. Biting her lower lip, she pulled on an ear none too gently. No response. Everyone blinked before crowding around him. Despite all thier attempts to wake him, Inuyasha did not stir. Every once in a while, he would twitch or growl, but he was silent otherwise.
Just before dawn, Kagome gave up trying to wake him nicely. Taking Kaede's bucket, she went to the stream to fill it. She was so irritated she didn't sense the demon close by until he'd already come up behind her. Turning, she nearly ran head first into his chest. Her eyes rose slowly to meet golden orbs that stared emotionlessly down at her. Swallowing, she'd wrap her hands around the bucket handle.
"May I help you, Sesshomaru?"
"Your cousin...She is working in league with Naraku."
"No...He is controlling her. He's possessed her."
"Are you sure about that?"
"Yes. It was shown to me."
"In a dream?"
"Yes."
"What are you doing here, bastard?" came a voice behind them.
The two turned to see Inuyasha standing in the middle of the path, Tetsusagia drawn. He growled low in his throat, before staring at Kagome. The girl stared back defiantly, her hands tightening around the water bucket. Sesshomaru looked between the two, a slightly amused smirk curling on his lips.
"We shall speak later, girl." he stated before turning to walk away.
Kagome merely nodded before walking down the path towards Inuyasha. She ignored him completely, staring at the water in the bucket. When he moved into her path, she bumped straight into his chest, the bucket falling to soak thier feet. Kagome gasped sharply, stiffening when his hand slipped beneath her chin. Raising her face so thier eyes could meet, he gave her a brief smile. Lowering his head, he brushed his lips lightly over hers before pulling away.
"I had a dream." they said in unison.
Blinking, Inuyasha canted his head before asking, "Kouga?"
"Kouga." she confirmed.
"He's alive you know...She showed me. After Naraku left her, she went back to heal him and herself with her dreams before coming to us...."
"So...he's okay...Ayame? Ginta? Hikkaku?"
"They're all fine."
The two began walking back to Kaede's hut, hand in hand. Neither spoke, fearing what the other had to say. Kagome looked anywhere but at Inuyasha, keeping her eyes on the flowers beside the path. Inuyasha's golden gaze was likewise on the trees above them. The silence was bloated with doubts, rich with the scent of fears. As the path stopped to the clearing of the village, Inuyasha pulled Kagome behind a tree. Ignoring her squeak of surprise, he dipped his head to nuzzle her cheek. What he whispered in her ear caused her face to flame. Swatting his arm, she pulled away and laughed, before racing off towards the hut. He followed at a much slower pace. He found her seated next to Sango, the two pouring over a magazine Kagome had brought back months ago.
"I know where Lokelani's being held captive." he said, trying not to ignore the looks he got from the group.
