Epilogue: Desires
The family cemetery was quiet. Most of the Higuarshi family had returned to the shrine for a silent meal, and then to return to their chores. Kagome had stayed behind, sitting beside her cousin’s grave to cry in peace. Inuyasha stood a few yards back, watching his mate through narrowed eyes.Suddenly he got the faintest feeling that he was being watched. He turned his head slowly, golden orbs meeting those of the person standing to his right. He grunted softly in greeting, before looking at Kagome again. Lokelani smiled slightly, as she stepped up to Inuyasha’s side, her hand lifting to rest on his shoulder.
“Inuyasha…”
“You’re dead.”
“Of course I am, silly. I couldn’t go knowing something was bothering you.”
“Nothing is wrong with me.”
“Don’t lie to me Inuyasha. I can see into your heart. You dread marking her.”
Inuyasha’s eyes widened slightly before he nodded once.
“Where?”
“On her side, opposite from the scar of the Sacred Jewel.”
Lokelani nodded and smiled, before canting her head. “What else bothers you?”
Inuyasha’s shoulders lifted in a sigh, before he glared at Lokelani. “Pups.”
Lokelani giggled silently, before replying, “All you have to do is ask her, Inuyasha. Be warned; from your joining you shall have only one pup. After the first Kagome shall not be able to conceive.”
Inuyasha sighed before looking to his mate, who still sat by Lokelani’s grave. “Can you tell what the gender is?”
“I cannot. I’m sorry…I don’t have much time left Inuyasha…Goodbye my friend…”
He felt the barest brushes of her lips over his cheek, before she drifted over to Kagome. Lokelani dropped gracefully to her knees behind her cousin, slipping her arms comfortingly around Kagome’s waist. Kagome jerked slightly, before looking around. Unable to see what had touched her, her chocolate orbs met Inuyasha’s golden ones. Kagome stood slowly, and started to saunter towards him, a smile crossing her lips. He saw the faintest of glows about her waist, even though Lokelani still stood by her grave. Blowing a kiss to the pair, the hanyou girl turned and walked into the forest. A soft gentle breeze signified her departure from their world.
“Let’s go home, Kagome...”
Two Years Later
“It’s not time yet, Inuyasha! I don’t need to go home!” Kagome screeched from her sitting position on the floor of Kaede’s hut.
“I’d feel better if you were in your time!” he replied, his ears flattening against his head as he crouched beside his mate.
“I have to be here for Sango! Now park your butt, before I use ‘it’ on you!”
Miroku watched the scene with a mixture of amusement and worry. Sango at that moment was in the hut Miroku and Inuyasha built for the newly wedded couple. Kaede refused Kagome admittance to the birthing chamber, where Sango lay writing upon her futon, until she was absolutely needed. Kagome herself was pale, even though she swore she was fine. Shippo looked on with worry, far from Inuyasha, lest the hanyou’s temper exploded.
A lot had happened in the years since Lokelani’s death. Naraku had been found and destroyed. The only memory of him now was the terror of his time upon the land. They were still hunting the shards Naraku had, the one in Sango’s brother’s back included. Six months from the anniversary of Naraku’s death, Miroku and Sango were married. The ceremony was very traditional, despite the ex-monk’s lechery of his wife. A misty-eyed Kagome and disgruntled Inuyasha looked on. Not long after, Kagome and Inuyasha had broken the news to her mother and grandfather that they were mated. Her mother’d taken it quite well, simply wandering off to plan the small wedding that Grandpa Higuarshi’d wrangled them into. Shippo had been adopted by the couple years before, but it was more official.
“Kagome, Kaede says you need to come now!” called a young village girl from outside the hut.
Inuyasha lifted Kagome to her feet, despite the glare his mate gave him as she waddled towards the door. His lips curled just barely, before he walked to scoop her into his arms. She gave a slight protest before leaning against his shoulder and sighing. He moved quickly to Sango’s hut, where he placed her down just outside the birthing chamber. Kagome smiled over her shoulder at him before moving into the room with an even bigger smile.
“What are we going to name this one, Sango?” Kagome smiled as she knelt clumsily beside her friend.
Sango grunted. “Kaiya or Kanaye”
After nearly twenty-one hours of labor, Kanaye was born. Miroku nearly fainted as a tired Kagome delivered the news that he had a son. The babe was healthy, with a dusting of fine black hair and blurry violet eyes. He was the newest addition to the already family of four, and his sisters looked pretty impressed. Iva and Mai had been born just shy of nine months after their parents married. The twins were already a handful, toddling about on chubby legs after Miroku and the village men whenever they got the chance. While Iva and Mai favored Sango in looks, Kanaye was already the mirror image of his father.
Inuyasha hooked his arms around Kagome’s waist after Miroku had walked away. She leaned into him with a quiet sigh, lifting her face to look up at him. He leaned down to brush a light, restrained kiss over her lips, before resting his hands on her belly. Beneath it’s father’s claws, the baby kicked and flipped and moved endlessly.
“It’s gotta be a boy.” He murmured.
Kagome didn’t have a chance to answer as she winced, and just about doubled over. Inuyasha paled almost as much as Kagome did. Lifting her up into his arms, he started towards the well, only to be stopped by Kagome.
“You’ll never make it.” She whimpered.
He grunted and turned about to storm into Kaede’s hut, where he just about dropped Kagome. She let out a strangled sound at the sight of the woman who awaited them there. Where once she’d been merely pretty, Kikyo was now beautiful in her life-after-death. Inuyasha moved to lay Kagome on their futon, which was in a shadowed corner.
“Is it her time?”
“Think so.”
“Leave this hut then.”
“No, I am staying with her.”
“Just for a few minutes, then you can come back.” Kagome added quietly.
Inuyasha looked down at his mate before storming from the hut. He sat down right outside the door, ear cocked as he eavesdropped on the women. He heard Kaede talking softly to Kagome, then Kagome’s voice asking Kikyo to leave. As he stood to storm back into the hut, he heard Kikyo’s laugh. A soft, chilling sound. The dead priestess firmly refused to leave. After moments of silence, Kagome agreed to let her stay.
Day turned to night, and still Inuyasha was barred from the hut. Kikyo placed a barrier over the building, so that the hanyou could not come through the mat door. He drew a crowd, as he cursed at the top of his lungs. He was still screaming in the morning. Finally, as the new moon rose above the sky, he was allowed into the hut. He moved to Kagome’s side, worry etching his features as he knelt by her pale form. Kagome’s eyes sought his, just as their hands twined together. Just an hour later, Inuyasha watched his daughter make her way into the world. Kagome took one look at her daughter, then fell into a deep sleep.
She awoke the next morning, to the sight of Inuyasha cradling their baby. He was asleep, slouched against the wall with the little girl held in the protective folds of his hoari. She smiled slowly, as she sat up. As the sheets rustled, Inuyasha’s golden eyes opened. He smiled at her, before looking down at their daughter. Standing, the hanyou made his way over to his mate. Handing the child down into her arms, he’d sit on the edge of the bed.
“What are we gonna call her?” he asked as he wrapped an arm about his small family.
“Let’s call her Mitsuko.” Kagome suggested.
“Mitsuko…Or what about Mika?”
“New moon…Hmmm…It fits, cause she was born on the new moon…”
Inuyasha grinned as he fluffed the tiny bit of snow-white hair the covered his daughter’s head. Her tiny ears were still folded back against her head, though she opened her eyes to blink blurry golds at her parents. She let out a mighty yell, her fists flailing as she wailed. Her parents laughed as the rest of their friends made their way into the room, to celebrate a new life.
“What are you looking at Inuyasha?”
“Oh…nothing…”
He turned to smile at his mate, knowing it was just a figment of his imagination. He could have swore though, he saw Lokelani standing in the doorway, a smile on her face. Somehow, she’d known just what he desired deep within his heart.

Well folks, there it is. This is my first completed fic. I hope you liked it. There are things that aren’t quite canon, but if it isn’t canon, it’s for a reason. I’d like to thank my bitchy beta, SWH. She’s helped me through a lot of blocks, and a lot of grammar mistakes. I’m not sure if I’ll post a sequel yet or not.
