Chapter 1
Realizations
&n bsp; This story gives an insight on their thoughts. This is my first fan fiction, but I still write with plenty of detail and passion. But if there are some things you don't like, just tell me in a review, but go easy on me because I'm new at this. Well, without further ado, on with the story. And remember to please review.
&n bsp; Kagome stared into the fire, looking as though she had never seen such a thing before in her entire life when she really didn't see it at all.
Her expression was blank, her eyes, unseeing. He watched her carefully. Something was bothering her, he just knew it. The look on her face said it all.
if she could feel his eyes on her, read his mind, she turned her head, looked up at him, and smiled.
winced when he saw the fake smile that she was obviously putting on for his benefit. She rested her head on her raised knees as she looked at the fire once more.
He jumped out of the tree, gracefully landing on his feet. The way he always landed on his feet sometimes made Kagome wonder if he really was half dog youkai or if he was actually half cat.
stalked over to her, scowl in place, hands shoved up the sleeves of his fire rat haori. He stood right in front of her, his expression demanding.
"What's wrong with you, wench?"
She shot him a warning look. "Nothing, InuYasha." She looked around him at the fire once again.
The hell nothings wrong. You're usually an endless chatter box, but lately you've been keeping your mouth shut."
what's wrong with that?" Kagome asked as she dared to look at him, meeting his scowl with one of her own. "You're usually telling me to shut up, like you can't be bothered with hearing me speak at all! So what's your problem now? Huh? I thought you'd be happy."
"Fuck it. Here you are making a big scene and all I asked you was what's wrong. I ain't gonna take this!" And with that, InuYasha jumped back into the tree as gracefully as he had jumped down.
Kagome sighed. She hadn't meant to start anything at all and she was actually surprised that he didn't keep the argument up. It wasn't like him to just let a subject drop so easily. Kagome stood up and went to sit against the tree across from InuYasha's, opposite of his to the fire.
drug her big yellow bag with her. Opening it up and digging around inside, Kagome rummaged through it, looking for the item of her interest.
ha!" Kagome said quietly as she pulled out the bag of potato chips.
Quietly standing up and walking over to the tree InuYasha was in, Kagome held the bag with her mouth before she proceeded to climb the tree. InuYasha watched her with interest as she easily climbed from one branch to the other.
finally reached the branch he was on. She appeared to be a bit tired as she struggled with the last branch. Once she was made her way up and got situated, she finally spoke.
know, I saw you watching me. You could have helped me you know."
You looked like you were doing just fine to me."
"Whatever. Anyway, I just wanted to apologize for starting stuff before. Forgive me?"
asked as she held out the bag of potato chips, one of InuYasha's favorites.
He eyed her suspiciously as he slowly reached out his hand to take the chips. He stopped just short of the bag.
sure you're not up to something sneaky?"
She tried her hardest to look offended by the question, but she laughed instead. "Yes I'm sure."
He took the bag from her and opened it. He finished off the chips in about a minute and didn't even offer Kagome even one. This didn't really surprise her or bother her.
knew that no one and nothing could stand in the way of him and his 'dried potatoes' or his ramen noodles. Kagome sighed as she began to try climbing down from the tree, just now realizing just how high up she was.
'Don't look down Kagome. Don't look down.' She kept chanting mentally.
she did look down and when she did, she slipped. InuYasha caught her hands and pulled her back up. Once she was safely on the branch again, Kagome buried her face in his haori.
you," she said as she looked at him.
noticed the position they were in at the moment, him sitting crosslegged on the branch with Kagome in his lap. She blushed and he did too, obviously realizing just how close they were.
He cleared his throat before speaking. "Spsh, whatever. I just didn't want you to fall, that's all. You weak, pathetic humans always need help."
Kagome glared at him as she tried to get up. He pulled her back down. "Did I say you could go?"
think you can stop me?" She tried to get up again.
time, he let her get up, standing on the branch with her hand against the tree trunk for balance.
I can't stop you," he began as he pointed down, "but the height can."
of a sudden, Kagome became a bit dizzy and began to sway back and forth when she looked down. Right when she fainted, InuYasha caught her.
"Stupid girl. You should have stayed put."
He picked her up in her arms, cradled her against his chest. Jumping down from the tree, InuYasha walked over to the sleeping bag she had already laid out and gently placed her on it.
never let you fall, Kagome," InuYasha whispered into her ear softly. And as if she had heard him, she smiled gently as she mumbled something to quiet to be heard even by his ears.
he could tell that she was comfortable and content, he took one last look at her face before he jumped back up in the tree, gazing at her through the foliage.
came. Kagome sat up and yawned. InuYasha, she could see, was still in the tree. Today, they would make it back to the village. They were so close to finally completing the jewel.
none of them had discussed plans for wishes for purifying the jewel, for they all knew that once it was purified, Kagome would have to stay in either their world or her own. She knew that Sango, Miroku, and Shippo wouldn't want her to leave. How InuYasha felt, though, she didn't actually know.
had been thinking this over a lot lately. She'd been thinking about many things, all of which led to the conclusion that she didn't belong in this world.
'I don't belong here,' Kagome thought as she slowly stood up and stretched before walking to the stream nearby. 'I don't belong with them.'
had been thinking more and more about herself and the jewel lately and realized that it was all her fault. "I'm sorry Shippo,' She thought as a tear escaped her eye. "If I hadn't shattered the jewel, then his father would have never been killed by the Thunder Brothers."
She smothered a small cry as she thought about Sango. "And Sango. If I hadn't shattered the jewel, her father and fellow villagers would still be alive. She'd be living happily with her father and her brother, Kohaku. Kohaku wouldn't be under Naraku's control. Shippo and Sango, they'd both be living happy, normal lives if it wasn't for me. It's all my fault."
She gently washed her face, hoping that the cool water would help wake her up a bit more. Once she was finished, she made her way back to the camp. She stopped right by her sleeping bag.
seeing InuYasha around anywhere, she proceeded to pack her sleeping bag away. Once she closed her bag and looked around, she screamed as she came face to face with InuYasha. He jumped back, surprised by her reaction.
Don't you ever do that again. You scared the living day lights out of me!"
if you hadn't left the camp sight, then you wouldn't have been so surprised by seeing me." He crossed his arms over his chest.
I did was go to the stream to wash off my face. And besides, you were gone when I woke up and left."
Now get on my back so we can go."
aren't we going to eat something first?"
can eat when we get back to the village. Now let's go."
the village is still so far away. It'll be evening by the time we get back."
we'll stop along the way, now get on my back."
grabbed her bag and handed it to him before she did as she was told. They had gone off by themselves to deliver a package to a friend of Kaede's, a priestess in another village.
was too old to make the trip herself, "Young blood circulates better than that of the old," she had said.
she meant by that, InuYasha didn't know, but Kagome did. Kaede had meant that since they were young, they would be able to get there and back faster and easier than she could.
had been three years since she had began this journey, and now, she feared that it was coming to an end.
Where was the satisfaction, the feeling of accomlishment that she had always believed she would feel after the completion of the jewel?
of this, she got a deep sadness and a feeling of being out of place.
she was settled onto InuYasha's back, he took off, making her forget her previous train of thought.
that mattered to her at the moment was herself, the wind in her face, and the hanyou who brought her through time again and again.
for that moment, Kagome felt that in this time and place, right here with him, she belonged. But that wasn't right, was it? After all, how could she belong with a guy who loved another woman?
'He still loves Kikyo after all. I'm stupid for thinking that he could ever have feelings for a 'pathetic human' like me.' She lowered her head, laying it against his back and sighed. 'Yes. I guess it was a silly thought after all.'
But as long as he kept moving, as long as the wind hit her face, as long as she was with him, did it really matter whether or not he loved her when he made her feel so at ease?
it still mattered to her.
at least for the moment, she was at peace. He brought her that peace. 'InuYasha. If only for a little while, let me stay with you.'
They reached the village later that afternoon to early evening.
take it ye delivered the package to Faruka safe and sound."
Kaede. She told us to tell you thanks, by the way."
I know she needed it badly.
ye two for making the trip for me. I'm afraid my old bones aren't up for much these days. It would take me too long, even with a horse."
Kagome. Did you and InuYasha do anything....'interesting' ....while you were gone?" Miroku asked, a mischevious glint lighting his eyes.
do you mean by interesting?" Kagome asked. InuYasha's face turned a bright red. He had caught onto what Miroku meant and she soon figured it out as well.
Her face heatened up to match the shade of InuYasha's.
Sango said as she wacked him over the head. "Don't you dare ask them things like that!"
Sango! I was only joking. Calm down!"
you damn sure have a sick sense of humor," InuYasha mumbled as he willed his face to cool down and go back to its normal color.

Sesshomaru roamed across the Western Lands, his domain. A cold wind blew even though it was still summer.
seemed odd to Sesshomaru, but when you live in the Warring States Era, not too many things are out of the ordinary. Anything odd was definitely a bad omen.
The sinister wind blew, leaving behind the forboding of an evil presence. Jaken shivered.
Lord? Did you feel that? That strange feeling?"
gave him no sign that he had heard him, no recognition other than a small nod of the head.
are you two talking about? An evil presence? Are you scared Lord Sesshomaru?" Rin asked, even though she already knew the answer to the last question.
Sesshomaru fears nothing, Rin. Remember that."
my lord!"
'I know not what this evil wind forbodes, but I shall find out.'
with that, Sesshoomaru took off towards his castle, leaving Jaken, Rin, and Ah-Uhn in his wake.
......... ......xo000ox...............
peered up through the branches of Goshinboku, watching, gazing, waiting. This was the very place where they first met.
sat on the same brancjh he always did, watching the sun set, the invisible fingers of the wind playing with his hair as it passed by.
loved that. Did he know that she was looking at him? Did he know that she was gazing up at him, trying to tell him with her eyes all of the stuff she couldn't force out of her mouth for so long?
he had a sad, confused, deep look of concentration on his face. She knew that look. She had seen it many times before. He got that look whenever he was thinking about Kikyo.
know that look,' she thought. 'I was a fool to ever think that maybe he loved me. How could he when he still loves Kikyo?'
he not made it clear that she wasn't the one he loved time after time? 'Like when he kissed her before,' she thought.
voice arose in her head. was the one who did the kissing,' the voice in her head defended.
he didn't fight it. He didn't try to pull away,' she fought back.
He'd also embraced her by Goshinboku, vowing to protect her.
when she left, he told me that he chose Kikyo.'
other voice came back. 'But he embraced you, too. It was by the well. He hugged you and said he was afraid of losing you.'
shook her head. 'And after that, he took my jewel shards and pushed me down the well.'
it was for your own good. He didn't want you to get hurt. He wanted you to be safe.'
; has risked his life time after time to save you, am I right?'
But only because I'm his 'jewel detector.' He's said so before himself when we first met Miroku.'
was trying to hide his true feelings.'
'Yeah right,' she thought sarcastically. 'If you know so much, then why does he hide his true feelings?'
do you hide yours?'
He can't love me. I'm just the reincarnation of the woman he loves. I've always been second best compared to Kikyo to him and I always will be. Just go away and leave me alone.'
other voice fell completely silent and Kagome let out a sigh of relief.
looked down at her suddenly, scowl in place. She braced herself for whatever he was about to say. "What are you looking at?" He said roughly.
don't know. I'll let you know whenever I figure it out." She smiled when she saw him expression change from the scowl, to shock, then to anger.
"And what the hell is that supposed to mean?"
"Well, why don't you get back to me whenever you figure it out? But don't hurt yourself trying to think. I know how hard it must be for you." And with that, she began to walk away.
decided to let the arguement go. He recognized her teasing for what it was. As he saw her form disappear into the foliage, he sighed.
looks so much like Kikyo, but other than that, they are nothing alike. Completely different, two separate women with the same soul.'
shook his head in frustration. Naraku was gone, so Kikyo was safe, right? He was free to go to hell with her now.
was that really what he wanted. Only a few more shards of the jewel were left. He could finally get his wish to be a full youkai.
was that what he really wanted either? He was so confused. Kagome was right. It really did hurt him to think.
Images of Kikyo's sad and lonely expression came to him, making him feel as if he'd failed her.
still walked the earth, as sad and lonely as ever. He could save her from being lonely, couldn't he? He could go to hell with her.
all, he'd already decided to go with her, if that was what she truly wanted.
Kagome. Beautiful images of Kagome's heart warming smile flooded his brain like an overflowing river.
pure, honest. All defined Kagome. Over the years, this unusual girl had healed the wounds of his heart, his soul, that the cold harsh world had left cut deep into him.
cold wind blew. A sinister wind that shot straight through him and chilled him to the bone. But it wasn't the time of year for such winds.
was going on and he knew he wouldn't like it. And this feeling, this thought. In this he was right.

cave. It was dark and cold. All of which heightened his senses. He had spent so long in the darkness, but he sought the light. The brightness of the world beyond.
cursed that wretched Kyo for sealing him away for so long. Kyo and that Inu no Taisho. A human and a youkai. He'd never thought that there would be such a partnership.
vowed to himself that he would have his revenge on the spawn of Kyo Higurashi and the Inu no Taisho. They would pay for the actions of those relatives who came before them.
finished breaking out of his stone concealment. For so long, he'd been waiting in this stone prison of his, waiting to gather enough power to break the sealing spell of the powerful human priest, Kyo.
had his freedom now. And it was finally time to rise again. Light. Beautiful bright light came out of a single hole in the ceiling of the cave.
was just enough light to let him see his surroundings.
could see her. Encased in stone, her figure, the outline of her body called to him. She was among his most faithful servants, and she would do her job well, just as she had in the past.
would be the first to be freed.
pulled off the single seal that was placed on the statue. How could Kyo be so self assured as to use only one little seal?
began and the rock began to crumble away. Before he knew it, she emerged, gasping for air as she freed herself from the stone. Her long ebony hair flowed out before her.
finally opened her eyes, the violet of them reflecting off the light, almost glowing in the darkness.
back, Kasuya."
eyes landed on him. "Master. We're back. But how long has it been?"
not sure. Maybe a hundred years, maybe two, or maybe even three. But what does it matter? We have all the time in the world now. Come. It is time to wake the others."
bowed low to him, smiling as she brought her head up. "As you wish, master."
Disclaimer: I don't own InuYasha or any of the characters. Though
I do give my undying gratitude to Rumiko Takahashi for creating it.
