Chapter 8

Three months

Here we go again. I was going to do that Story of Hagime part 2 when I got the urge
to write about just how long InuYasha has to prevent his youkai from taking over him.
So here we go. I won't disturb you any further. So just read, read, oh and... um...read.
This might be one of the last chapters that I update. I'm seriously beginning to doubt my
abilities as an author. The strain is getting to me and I'm tired of not being appreciated
for my working for hours at a time to type out two chapters a day so whoever does read
it can read it. If anybody wants, and I mean really wants me to finish this story, then I
need at least two reviews or three reviews.

"So you only have three months, you say?"

"Yeah. The twenty first night of the twenty first year. Myoga meant my birthday. I know
you heard him when he said that before, wench."
"January twenty first," Kagome said as she stroked her chin. "My birthday is on a
twenty first."
"Yeah. What a coincidence," he said sarcastically.
"Yeah. It is actually. It's like it was destiny for us to meet, you know?"
"Keh."
Soaring above the trees, InuYasha and Kagome were headed towards Sesshomaru's
castle. They had just left the village. There was a wonderful view of InuYasha's forest
from where they were in the sky.
"So....free," Kagome whispered as the wind hit her straight in the face.
"What was that?"
"Oh....nothing."
Didn't he always somehow make her feel free? As if she was no longer held by the
binds of invisible confinement. She'd never been trapped physically. It was more like
her soul was no longer held inside of her, no restraints, gloves off, nothing but absolute
freedom.
"If I had a choice, I'd never go back to that hell hole again," InuYasha said as he lit
on the ground and began to run full force. Kagome threw back her head and laughed at
the force of the wind hitting her face, her hair whipping back behind her, swaying like
an untamed force of black waves. Her eyes were closed, but she could see her
surroundings, her heart showed them to her.
"What are you laughin' at, wench?" he asked as he turned his head just a little to look
back at her.
"I'm laughing, InuYasha. I'm just laughing."
How was it that merely being with him like this made her feel so at ease, so....free as
she had always put it?
"So what will you do if Sesshomaru absolutely refuses to hand over the book?"
"My claws need sharpening and so does Tetsusaiga."
"Why must you resort to violence?"
"Because it's the only language that damn bastard understands."
"Couldn't you just ask him...nicely?"
"Keh. I think you've gotten more sun than needed lately, wench. Your brains fried or
somethin'."
"My brain is just fine, thank you."
"That's what you think. Your crazy if you think I'm asking Sesshomaru for anything, let
alone nicely."
"And you plan to fight him at his castle, his territory, his domain where you have a big
disadvantage?"
"Keh. I'll fight him anytime, anywhere. It don't matter to me."

"Well, it does matter to me."
"That's just you."
"And what is that supposed to mean?"
He didn't answer.
"Hey. I'm talking to you."
"Well I damn sure ain't listening."
"InuYasha, she warned in a tone of voice that he definitely recognized.
"If you say the 's' word, you'll fall, too."
He took her silence as surrender as he jumped up to soar through the air again.
Sesshomaru's castle was a good three day trip away.
Out of the pervert monk, the exterminator, and the kitsune brat, he considered himself
lucky to be stuck with the wench.
That was the way it had been in the beginning, just the two of them.
Things had changed a lot since then, he'd changed. And she was the one who
changed him.
He saw Kikyo's sould collectors flying over a nearby forest.
He hadn't seen her in a while. But he knew that if he went to her now, then it would hurt
Kagome deeply.
Kagome must have seen them, too, because he could feel her tense up all of a
sudden.
"You...should go to her...Kikyo," she whispered.
"Shut up wench or else I'll drop you. We don't have the time to make any detours."
"InuYasha..." Kagome said softly. She looked as if she wanted to say something, but
shook her head instead, deciding against it.

"Fish again, InuYasha? I'm tired of fish," Kagome complained.
"That's why I'm eating ramen," InuYasha said as he reached for the cup.
"Oh my gosh!" Kagome exclaimed as she pointed behind him. "Look over there!"
"What is it?" he said as he looked over at where she was pointing. There was nothing
there.
"I don't see anything," he said as he turned back around. "Hey!" he said as he looked
at Kagome, who was eating all of his noodles.
On the ground where his ramen had been, he saw her fish.
"Hey wench! You can't do that to me! Give it back."
"What? This?" she asked as she threw the empty container at him.
"Wench," he said angrily as he bit into the fish.
"Baka," she replied as she pulled a bottle of water out of her backpack.
"Pathetic human."
"Dog boy."
"Keh."
"Keh."
"You can't 'keh' me. Keh is my word."
"Whatever."
"Yeah, sure."
All fell silent, except for the sound of the water going down Kagome's throat as she
drained the bottle.
She let out a little contented sigh as the water moistened her suddenly dry throat. It
must have been the cool air that made it so dry all of a sudden. Or maybe it was the
weird look that InuYasha was giving her. She didn't know which.
A few hours later, she moved over by the fire and laid down on her bed roll, pulling the
blanket over her head in an attempt to block out the wind.
She heard InuYasha get up and when she peeked out from the cover of the blanket, he
was gone. She looked up the the tree behind her and saw him sitting there, back
against the tree trunk, arms wrapped around Tetsusaiga. He looked down at her.
"What?
"Oh...nothing. Good night InuYasha," Kagome said as she pulled the blanket over her
head again."

"Keh. Get to sleep. We have a big day ahead of us tomorrow."

After a while, her scent shifted and he could tell that she was alseep.
Kagome looked so peaceful when she slept, and if only for a little while, the confused,
almost sad aura that had surrounded her lately disappated. What had been on her mind
so much lately, that made her this way? He knew that if he asked her, she'd just brush it
off, saying that it was nothing to worry about. But she couldn't fool him, she never had
been able to and never would be able to, he predicted.
Kagome tossed and turned in her sleep, most likely having a bad dream, InuYasha
figured.
But it was when she began to cry out for him when he jumped out of the tree and rushed
over to her. She had broken out in a cold sweat and her skin seemed very pallid.
He began to shake her lightly.
"Kagome. Kagome? Wake up Kagome!"
"No....no! Inu...yasha!" she mumbled in her sleep.
He began to shake her a bit harder. "Kagome!"

Kagome's dream.....

InuYasha delivered the final blow to Naraku. It was finally over! He put Tetsusaiga back
into it's sheath and watched as Naraku's body turned to dust and blew away with the
wind.
He then proceeded to run to Kagome's side.
"Kagome," InuYasha said softly, but urgently. "Kagome, wake up! Please!"
She opened her eyes. "InuYasha," sh said quietly. "You beat Naraku. You finally beat
Naraku!"
"No. We beat Naraku," InuYasha told her. "Kagome, can you stand up and walk?"
She nodded. "Yeah. I just have to rest a minute."
He should have sat down and rest, too, because he was so tired he felt as if he could
fall over at any second.
Instead, he helped her sit up.
Kilala walked over to them, Sango and Kohaku were laying on her back, weak, but
definitely alive. Shippo ran over to Kagome and InuYasha.

"You did it InuYasha!" Shippo exclaimed.

"Yeah," InuYasha replied.

He was about to say more when Miroku crawled over to them.

"I...I don't understand," Miroku said as InuYasha bent down to pick up the Sacred
Jewel fragment that Naraku had possessed. "If Naraku's dead. Then why isn't my
Wind Tunnel gone?"

"What?!" InuYasha asked as he picked up the jewel, his hand immediately being burned
by the tainted evilness Naraku had bestowed upon it.

Kagome watched in horror as one of Naraku's arms, which InuYasha had obviously not
seen still there, ripped right through his stomach.

"No!" Kagome cried. "No! InuYasha!"

Tears streamed down her face as she picked up her bow and arrow, not thinking twice
as she fired one of her sacred arrows at Naraku's remaining hand, making direct contact
with the stray appendage.

The hand dissolved into a cloud of dust and blew away. She then crawled over to
InuYasha.

He was on the ground, face down, completely motionless.
Kagome turned him over face up.

"InuYasha. InuYasha, please wake up!" Kagome cried as her tears ran down her
cheeks, hit his face, then ran down his own. It almost looked as if he was crying, too.

"InuYasha. Wake up. Don't do this to me. I need you!"
"I love you...she whispered so softly that not even Shippo or Kilala heard what she said.

"Don't die on me!" she said again as she began to cry harder, grasping onto his haori.

End of dream.....

"Kagome. Wake up. Wake up Kagome. It's just a dream!"

The world darkened around Kagome and when she opened her eyes, she saw InuYasha
shaking her.

"InuYasha. You're alive?" she asked as she began to cry. "I thought you were dead.
Na...Naraku's hand went straight through your stomach and you weren't moving," she
said, barely audible even to his ears.

She wrapped her arms around him as she cried against him, getting his haori wet. It
didn't matter. She needed him and this was more important than the dryness of clothing.

"It was just a dream, Kagome. It's okay. I'm here."

"I th...thought I'd l...lost you. B...but you're here."

"And I'm not going anywhere."

She began to cry harder as he rubbed her back, smoothed down her hair. She began to
take in deep breaths of air, trying to stop her tears. She finally calmed down a bit thanks
to his comforting, and reduced her fit to a few hiccups and sniffles.

Well, I like writing things where InuYasha and Kagome are alone. I hope
that the people who are reading are enjoying this. No questions and answers
part this time, sorry.
Well, I hope you liked this chapter, at least enough to keep on reading. You
don't know how much it means to me to know that people are reading this. It
makes my day. I gotta go start on the next chapter right now, which should be
up soon.
Well, Kagome's never really ever broken down like that before, but I think that
maybe InuYasha would try to comfort her under those circumstances. Well,
I must go now and you know....Well, bye.

~*Disclaimer: I don't own InuYasha or any of the characters.
Though I do give my undying gratitude to Rumiko Takahashi
for creating it. But I do own any original characters that I may
bring into the story.*~
