The sky was black with the smoke of fire and the lingering miasma yet to clear from the wind. The ravaged ground was muddy and coated with blood and remains. The area seemed permeated with death, a foul stink that coated the land, and seemed that it would never leave. The land was defiled and unclean and would probably never be as it once was. This was the scene of a horrific and epic battle, good versus evil, pure versus impure. And they had done it, they had finally won. They had defeated Naraku and his minions and won back the sacred jewel of four souls. But the cost was great; the death of Sango left a bittersweet tinge to the whole ordeal.

Miroku sat cradling the lifeless form of the brave Taijiya, he cried freely as he cupped her face with his once cursed hand. Kohaku sat silently beside Miroku with tears streaming unchecked down his own cheeks as he pondered why his sister would give her life for his own. Kagome was not far off screaming and crying more than she ever thought she could and clinging to a silent InuYasha. All of this was the despair following the victory, a time when they would have rejoiced if not for their fallen comrade. Sango however was not the only casualty, Ayame and poor little Rin also fell victim to Naraku's trickery. Koga and Sesshomaru remained stoic and composed, but the pain in both their eyes showed bright at the loss of those that were so dear to them. The worst part was that for some reason the Tenseiga would not bring back the fallen and it angered the great lord, and made the loss final and so very painful.

Days had passed since the battle, and Kagome sat silently under the God Tree looking at the tiny jewel in her hands. This isn't worth it she thought rolling the smooth stone between her fingers. She new that the jewel would grant a wish, any wish that she could conceive… but she also new that InuYasha desperately wanted to use the jewel to become a full demon. Often she would think about wishing for the lives of her dear friends to be restored, but she new that really the choice was not hers, InuYasha won the battle and really the jewel belonged to him.

“Kagome?” came a gentle voice that startled the young woman from her musings.

“Hai.” she responded sullenly to a solemn looking InuYasha.

He sat down next to her, and gently pulled her into his lap and hugged her close, inhaling her scent. He knew, despite the ache in his heart, he was happy that he stayed. He simply could not go with Kikyo to hell. Besides, the only thing that would be going would be that shell of a woman, as that part of Kagome's soul that had been stolen would be returned to her. InuYasha could feel her quake in his arms and he knew that she was crying again. She only did now when he held her like this, and he knew she needed it because she had gone off alone again and it had been hours since she was back in the village.

“Keade is making some food and sent me to get you. She says you have to eat.”
“Mmhmm” she snuffled and wiped her face with the back of her hand, she didn't really want to eat but she knew that Keade was right. InuYasha began to lift her from his lap and suddenly she stopped him.

“InuYasha,” she said softly, and he looked at her with eyes full of concern and still edged with pain.
“I want to give this to you,” she said taking his hand and pressing the jewel into his palm. “It's yours, you fought for it, you wanted it, and now you have it.”

InuYasha was somewhat crestfallen. She really thinks that after all that we have been through that I still want this? He didn't want the jewel, Kagome showed him that there was no need for it, she accepted him for the way that he was, she didn't want him to become just a human or a full demon. And he loved her for that. He also had hoped that she would use the damned thing to wish back their friends, hell he didn't know why she had waited. But he accepted the jewel anyways, if she wasn't going to wish them back then he damn well should. After pocketing the jewel InuYasha grabbed Kagome's chin and gently tugged her face to his own giving her a small chaste kiss, and then hugged her close. Both then rose and headed toward the village.

Tonight I will wish them back. InuYasha thought happily, soon Sango would be back and everything will be how it should have been.

That night InuYasha sat silently in the God Tree waiting for the right time to make his wish. Well that and he wasn't even all that sure as to exactly how he should wish. Did he wish in his head or out loud? Did he hold the jewel in one hand or in both like a prayer? After he wished would the jewel disappear? InuYasha sat deep in thought but was interrupted by Kagome.
“InuYasha?” she said
“Yeah?” was his soft reply.
“You haven't wished yet?”
“No,” he said landing softly in front of her from his perch, “No, I haven't yet.”
Kagome smiled softly at him, “Well hurry up.”
InuYasha smiled and held the jewel in his fist with a look of pure determination on his face. With a voice that held as much determination as his face he squeezed the stone in his hand and said, “I wish,” Kagome held her breath. “that our friends were alive.”
Kagome gasped, InuYasha.

InuYasha smiled at Kagome, and then frowned. “Is that it?”
He opened his fist and there sat the jewel, unchanged. And his heart fell; maybe the jewel didn't really work after all. Suddenly the Shikon pulsed and began to glow. The wind picked up and blew wildly through the trees, pink light swirled and twirled through the air and thousands of soft whispers echoed through the trees.
InuYasha's heart began to race as did Kagome's. The wind died down and he half expected to see Sango and the others standing before him. But there was nothing.

“W-where are they!?” he demanded, confused at the absence of his friends.
Kagome frowned and picked up the jewel that was still in InuYasha's hand, and squeezed it in her own. This has towork; we have to be together again. It's not right that we are separated like this! The jewel pulsed gently in her hands and then stopped. Taking in a deep breath and letting it out slowly, Kagome looked at InuYasha.
“Maybe we need to sleep on it, it might take a day or something to work?” she said hopefully.
InuYasha didn't want to tell her that the jewel more likely than not did not work.
“Yeah. Sure.” He said, and looked at her thoughtfully. Scooping her up from where they stood, he took her to the highest and broadest branch of the God Tree and settled there with her in his lap. Kagome snuggled close, deep into the warmth of his arms and there they sat, waiting for their wish, waiting for their friends to return.

Days came and went and nothing had happened. There was no sign of Sango, Rin, or Ayame. And Kagome decided that it was getting close to time for her to go home. Her mother must be worried sick; it had been a month straight since she had left her mother, telling her that she may not return. She did her best to hold it together, no one but her and InuYasha knew about the wish and no one knew that it had not come to fruition.

Shouldering her big yellow pack she walked silently beside InuYasha to the well. He helped her up to the edge wordlessly. He knew that he could not keep her from going back home, and he also knew that she needed time alone to think and to grieve and to be away from any and all things that would bring back memories of her dear friend. Kagome turned to InuYasha and gave him a tight hug, looking into his golden eyes she smiled softly. InuYasha's cheeks were dusted with a soft pink “Come back soon.” he said and kissed her gently on the lips. Kagome smiled, “I will”. She then slide gracefully off the edge and fell through the endless eternity that was the gateway between worlds.

Kagome spent a few days in her own time, recouping. The first and second night she cried herself to sleep and found that she missed desperately being in the comforting embrace of InuYasha. It was time to go back she decided on the third day. Packing her bag carefully she found herself to be quite anxious to be back. Despite the pain that was still fresh in her heart Kagome was genuinely happy. She wanted to go back and be with InuYasha… he chose her over Kikyo after all!

Kagome left quickly saying her goodbyes on the afternoon of the fourth day and practically ran to the well. She tossed her backpack over the edge, and then hauled herself over as well, and fell. Only this time it was not through the ages, there was no light, she was just falling down a well. Kagome cried out when she hit the ground, she had hit the side of the well and probably broken her wrist. But the pain that she felt physically did not match the fear and confusion that was washing over her in waves. Cautiously she peered up hoping to see sky, but all she saw was the roof of the well house.

Kagome became frantic, dropping to her knees she began clawing at the ground, trying to some how dig her way back. This couldn't be happening. No please. Please! By this time Kagome was crying as she scraped and scratched at the dirt.
“Please, no.” she pleaded breathlessly. “No! InuYasha! Please… PLEASE!”
