Kagome swung open the front doors of the dog demon's mansion and her eyes fell upon an all too familiar sight these days. Every time she lost her temper and used her powers, she left herself vulnerable to the attack of demons who hunted her, wanting her dead. `Funny' she thought, a bloodthirsty smirk spreading across her lips, `They still fancy themselves stronger than me.'
Humans had regressed in their abilities over the years, which is why when she was first thrust back into this world, her powers had been shunned and feared. Even her family found her very disconcerting. They could no longer wrap their mind around the magnitude of her power once the Jewel had been fully purified. However, ironically enough, demons too had lost their ability to retain their once great powers. Or maybe it was because she had always been fighting demons hopped up on Shikon Shards.
She dropped her hand to her hilt and she fingered the grip, wondering if it would be over kill to pull out her precious sword. Tenkou Sabaki was silent, cool to the touch, judging the lesser demons before them to be unworthy to whet its appetite. One of the first demons in the bunch lunged forward, seeing her stall and taking it a sign of weakness.
“See! Even this insolent wench knows when she's met her match!” the rather cocky Tanuki demon yelled, rallying his friends together and they all lunged at her as well. The Tanuki turned his head back to his prey, claws outstretched and a smirk of triumph on his face.
She had disappeared.
He stopped dead, and the others skidded to a halt, looking around, confused. A loud crack resounded through the neighborhood, shaking the very ground they stood on. The Taijiya had reappeared before them, in all of her enraged glory, with a boot clad foot now staking their Tankui leader's skull into the ground. Blood and brain matter oozed from beneath her foot, seeping through the grass of the front lawn. A cry of outrage sounded from among them as she looked up, an almost giddy expression on her face. She lifted a hand, and the foremost demons scampered backwards in alarm. Instead of striking out though, she turned her palm to face her and she curled her fingers, beckoning them to come forth and try their luck.
Another large demon, this time an Oni, shouldered his way to the front . He'd been the one to yell out at his friend's demise. He cracked his knuckles and his lip curled, baring a deadly fang and releasing a growl. “Bitch, you'll pay for that,” he snarled and lunged at her.
She waited until the last moment, when his claws were inches from her face and then jerked a leg up directly between his, ramming her knee right into his groin. There was absolutely no difference between the male anatomy of a demon and that of a human, and the Oni fell to his knees.
The smell of Miko strengthened, and the Oni looked up sharply, his eyes widened in fear. Her rose colored chi was wrapping around her arm and shoulder and her eyes were dancing in excitement. Her very being was trembling with the anticipation of the Demon's hot blood being spilled. Her arm pulled back, and the other demon's, sensing what was to come, scampered out into the night.
She swung her fist, ready to take down the Oni before her. Then she saw a sight she'd hoped desperately never to see again, stopping her dead in her tracks.
A rather tall man stood behind where all of the demons had been. His long, wavy black hair tossed in the wind as he stared at her. A chill encased Kagome's heart as she stood, open mouthed and staring at him. `No way,' she thought to herself, dumbfounded. The bloodlust she'd felt was gone, and she felt rather weak in the knees staring at him. Tenkou Sabaki roared to life in response to the demon's youkai. It wanted blood now. His blood. The fear that had over taken her was quickly replaced by an undiluted rage.
The Oni who still knelt before her never even had chance. Her hand darted out and grabbed a handful of his hair, and threw him out of her way into the pen of rabid demon dogs at the edge of the property, several yards away.
“Naraku!” the girl screamed, rage building uncontrollably inside of her. She unsheathed her sword and its rose hued blade glinted in the moonlight. “Why the hell are you here?!” she demanded. There should be no reason at all why he should be alive. That time, that battle… there was no possible way he survived after all of that. This had to be a Mimic demon. They took whatever shape they knew you feared most and exploited that fear to rend you useless in battle.
Her fingers tightened on the hilt of her sword and she raised the blade and lunged at him. Well, this Mimic had another thing coming if it though she was going to just lie down and die because of a stupid illusion. She snarled and swung down with the blade towards the Illusion's chest. A flurry of cloth was all that heralded his disappearance. The black robe he'd been wearing fluttered to the ground in pieces, having been shredded by the sword's chi.
“Kukukukuku…” his soft taunting laugh sounded behind her as his deadly vice-like hands gripped her wrists and immobilized her. He lowered his face to her neck and breathed deeply. “So, the rumors are true then. You really are the same Miko from that time,” his words whispered across her skin intimately.
She shivered, but in pure disgust, not desire. This was no Mimic demon. She felt his evil youkai wrapping around her. No demon could replicate this youkai, induce this same feeling of dread. Miasma billowed from under his feet and drained the grass and vegetation's nutrients.
A small form appeared in the door way of the Dog demon's mansion and the little toad demon's jaw dropped at the sight before him. He'd been order to discover the source of the ruckus, and though he'd expected to find Kagome at the heart of it, he never thought he'd come across the vision before him now.
Kagome's left leg shot up, and swung out violently behind her. She caught Naraku right in the knee, and caught him off guard. He stumbled back, but looked up at her, smiling, his eyes undeterred.
“What the fuck are you doing here?!” she roared again, swinging her sword around. He dodged it, but the chi after shock slammed into the front doors of the mansion, barely missing their onlooker.
“Kukuku…” Naraku chuckled as he strode towards the girl in an impossible to follow, effortless speed. His hand was around her neck and he lifted her, her toes leaving the ground. “Still so noisy… So unbecoming for a… reincarnation,” he said smarmily smiling, showing his razor sharp fangs. Considering he'd just confirmed that she was in fact the `same Miko from that time,' his meaning was not lost on her. Another burst of rage blossomed through her body and she swung the sword out, catching him in the chest and drawing blood. He hissed sharply in pain and dropped her.
She caught her footing and looking up at him, her blue eyes flashing to deadly silver as she slowly stood to her full height. “Don't you dare call me that,” she said in a cold, emotionless voice.
Naraku looked at her, his red eyes narrowed in dissatisfaction. This insolent woman had actually cut him. He'd commissioned this body specifically to be unable to be injured by either human or demon weapons, and here, this puny excuse of a human female had actually injured his body. His eyes flashed and he disappeared.
Jaken, from his stand point on the porch was unable to do anything as he watched with his Demon trained eyes as Naraku moved from in front of her to behind her again with very simple ease. Nor could he do anything as he watched Naraku's hand wrap around and plunge into her bowels. He pulled his hand back out and watched, smirking as Kagome's eyes widened in shock and she fell to her knees. As the blood oozed past her grasping hands and fell to the ground, Jaken felt his master's presence appear suddenly behind him.
The great Inu Youkai, the impossible to shake dog demon's eyes widened and he hissed with a sharp intake of breath at the sight before him. Naraku looked up at him, and smirked. He knew though, he was still no match for the demon who'd single handedly finished off his body so many years ago. He turned and retreated into the night.
Sesshoumaru had come at the smell of Kagome's blood spilling onto the ground, but the last thing he had expected to see, was Naraku as the culprit. Sesshoumaru bounded down the stairs to the crumpled female form. He scooped her up in her arms and moved swiftly passed Jaken.
“Jaken,” he ordered in a no-nonsense tone. “Go get that damn hag and bring her here now.”
Jaken, though very confused at this new development, turned to go and obey his master.
Sesshoumaru shouldered his way into his bedroom and laid Kagome's trembling form on the bed. The smell of miasma poured from her wound, as her body began to convulse from the poison and the blood loss. He strode over and grabbed his long unused sword, Tenseiga, and watched the girl's body like a hawk for the pallbearers of death to appear.
The never came.
A strange pinkish glow seemed to form in the girls abdomen, around where her uterus might have been and more miasma was forced out of the wound. He realized suddenly, that something was purifying the poison in her body. He looked closely and realized that the wound too was slowly closing. The pink hue brightened and brightened until it seemed the source of the light, a small orb, rose to the surface. And an old familiar smell tickled his nose.
As he watched, her wound closed and the pinkish hue slowly faded.
If he wasn't mistaken, that had been the smell of the Shikon Jewel. The Jewel they all had thought had disappeared along with the girl. That accursed Jewel that had rendered old Japan nearly in half still existed. Had that been what Naraku was after? If Kagome was alive, and the Jewel still existed, it only made sense that Naraku would still be there. Inu Yasha had told him everything that had happened in the Meidou with the demons attempting to draw Kagome back into the jewel.
Hadn't she wished for its disappearance though?
He watched as the girl began to stir. She was going to have a lot of explaining to do as soon as she awoke.
