Dimensions and Revenge: Chapter 9 Katherine's Memories
After Katherine's nap, Katherine got dressed to go visit her great grandparents. The maids packed up all her elegant dresses, cloaks, riding out fits, as well as her jewelry. Katherine went to find Duke Kyle. She asked her servants and they had no idea where he was.
Katherine decided to go outside for a walk round her and her late husbands' estate. She related tot eh time she first met her William.
***Flashback***
"Grandmother, where are we going," asked an anxious Katherine acting like a little child.
"We are going to a party my dear child, and that's all you need to know," said her grandmother with a gentle smile on her aging face.
They both sat in silence on the rest of the way to the party. Katherine was so excited that she couldn't keep still. This was her first party out of her parents' sight, well besides her grandmother who trusted her by herself and takes care of herself. The grandmother just looked at her granddaughter with such pride and joy in her eyes.
"Katherine, my dear?"
"Yes, grandmother," asked Katherine, who automatically stopped what she was doing to pay attention to her grandmother.
Her grandmother handed her an envelope with the seal of the King and Queen of England. Katherine looked up at her grandmother with confusion written in her face.
"Don't open it until the time is right…"
Katherine had a quick thought about how familiar it sounded, but her parents never used that phrase. She shook her head to forget about it and turned to listen what her grandmother had to say.
"…That will be when I pass, is that understood," said her grandmother with a stern, but gentle look on her face.
Katherine nodded in acceptance of the letter and agreeing to the terms in which the letter would be open. She slipped the letter into her pocket in her skirts. She knew that this would be on her mind all night. Her grandmother wanted to see her granddaughter smile and see her joy in her eyes again. She knew this was going to effect the evening.
"Katherine, a piece of your hair has fallen out of place!"
Katherine snapped out her mirror and checked to make sure everything was in order. Her grandmother started to laugh, but it sounded more like a giggle with her old age. Katherine felt a twinge of embarrassment and feeling her self fluster.
"Your to easy to fool. Cheer up dear; don't worry about this old bag. I have no regrets about dying, but the only thing I want to see before I die is you and your husband with 2 children. Is that clear," said her grandmother with a girlish look on her face, but yet a hint of seriousness in her face.
Katherine gave her grandmother a weak smile and a small nod. It was like her saying `Hahaha me get married have kids and that hair joke very funny!' Her grandmother looked out the window and Katherine fixed herself up. She made sure her dress was straightened, her hair was okay, and her gloves were in the proper place and made sure they were clean. Then she tried to pull her neckline up and made her breasts look like they were about to fall out. She hated when her parents made her wear that.
"Katherine, will you please stop messing with yourself! You look magnificent and beautiful."
"But grandmother, the bloody neckline is to low and it looks like they are just telling guys `come and get me if you want me'! I hate these dresses," complained Katherine, but she listened to her grandmother and stopped messing with the dress and everything else she could fix up.
It was about 5 minutes after her grandmother said that did they arrive. When the coach opened the door, Katherine was amazed at how beautiful the palace was.
"This way miss," directed a servant boy who had to be in his early 20's because he was young and had the strongest arms she ever saw.
He lead her to where their cloaks where to be kept. As Katherine entered the room she was amazed at how gorgeous the interior was to the outside of the palace.
"Now listen to me Katherine, you are to dance with at least 30 men at this party and talk to about 15 of them, is that understood," said her grandmother.
"Yes grandmother," replied Katherine rolling her eyes, but not enough for anyone to notice.
"I'll be watching you dear," stated her grandmother with a look in her eye, which told Katherine she wasn't joking.
Her grandmother disappeared in a flash. Katherine went to go sit on a settee, but as soon as she sat down a good looking gentlemen come over.
"My dear lady, I'm Viscount Edward, and I wish to ask if you would dance with me," asked the Viscount with a confident look on his face.
`He is kind of handsome with his light brown hair, his sea green eyes and he is a tall man. Good looking and maybe handsome' thought Katherine to herself.
"Sir, I would be glad to," said Katherine, but thinking to herself again `Let's start the count down!'
She smiled at the Viscount and stood up from her settee. The Viscount lead her to the dance floor were they were dancing a medium pace waltz.
It had been after 15 or 20 dances and talking to about a dozen men did she go out for a breather. When she left for the balcony, someone was already occupying it. She turned to leave, but someone called to her.
"You don't have to leave m'lady. You may stay if you wish," said the man walking out of the corner to come into the light.
"It's okay. I'm sorry to have disturbed you…?"
"William, William Clockmart."
"Sorry to have disturbed you Sir Clockmart, but I don't want to intrude on you. So I'm going. Nice to have met you," said Katherine and curtsied to the man, with board shoulders that brought out his facial features, his masculine chin, gorgeous hazel eyes and brown hair, you could also see his muscle that shone through his elegant waistcoat.
Out of courtesy he bowed back to her. When she left she couldn't forget his eyes they were his powerful pull in. As she left she could still feel him staring at her. Katherine ignored it and went to go find a place outside, not occupied by anyone. When she finally found a place she sat down on the bench that was glowing with the moon light. She pulled out the letter and just stared at it. It brought teats to her yes that her grandmother would give her something before anything had happened. She put the letter away and sat there sobbing and trying to figure things out.
William Clockmart was talking to some beautiful young women, when he spotted Katherine crying on the balcony. The ladies around him had admired him ever since they knew he was available to marry about a year ago.
"Excuse me ladies," said William bowing before leaving.
As he stood in the doorway, he thought he was looking at a masterpiece painted and called it "The weeping moonlight goddess." He saw her beauty as if it would vanish at any moment. The way the moonlight hit her already snow pale skin made it seem as it was glowing and her eyes were almond color with tears starting to come out of them. Her tears falling on her snow color cheek with little color in them. Also, her beautiful gold dress brought out her skin color even more, which made him start to tinkle with excitement in his manly regions. He had to shake his head and started towards her.
"Take this miss," said William handing her his hanky with his initials on it.
"Thank you, Sir Clockmart. I'm sorry once again for being a bother. It is just my grandmother gave me something I didn't expect until after she is dead and I'm all upset about it," sobbed Katherine during every other words.
"Excuse me miss, you know my name and I haven't had the pleasure of knowing yours," asked William curiously.
"Please forgive me Sir Clockmart. My name is Katherine Adams daughter of the Earl of Liver pool. I'm sorry for my bad etiquette this evening," said Katherine blushing a little bit in her cheeks and she handed William his hanky back, but he refused.
"Let's make an arrangement. Anytime you would like to get together you send me the hanky," said William with a childish grin on his face, which made Katherine melt.
She smiled at the idea, but suddenly a frown appeared on her angelic face.
"What's wrong, Miss. Katherine? Is it something I said," asked William hoping he didn't do anything to offend her.
"No, you didn't say anything, it's…what if you want to see me, what would you send," grinned Katherine feeling better since William came.
"Huh…lets think for a moment…um?"
They both sat there thinking about what Katherine could give him.
"I know! My oriental hair piece."
"Yes, that is something."
"Okay, here you go," said Katherine pulling it out of her hair.
"Don't lose it; my father had to wait 2 years for that piece."
She handed it to William than a couple minutes later she started to laugh.
"What is so funny Miss Katherine," wondered William.
"What we are doing…"
"What about it?"
"It is funny, because it is like we're…"
"Are what? Acting like what?"
"…like children, Sir William."
He thought about it for a minute, and then he also started to laugh lightly. Then he turned to face his moonlight goddess with her pale skin.
"I see what you mean!"
"I must go now and find my grandmother and start on our way home. Thank you for cheering me up and for the hanky, good-bye, Sir William. Until we meet again," said Katherine curtsying and leaving William on the balcony alone with his thoughts.
"Until we meet again…" he uttered with a voice he himself could only hear and clenching the gift from Katherine in his pocket.
It has been 2 weeks since Katherine met William, and that was the only thing on her mind. She kept his hanky at her bedside table. Every night before she would go to sleep, she would smell it to see if his scent was still there.
"William, I'm glad I met you, but I don't know what women call this feeling," whispered Katherine to herself and trying to suppress the pulsing between her legs, and tried to fall asleep.
Not to her knowledge, but her grandmother was watching her for the full 2weeks. On the carriage ride home, she noticed that her granddaughter had a kind of glaze in her eyes. Yet, she didn't know what it was or wasn't sure if her guess had been correct. So, she had been following Katherine around seeing what she has been up to. When Katherine wrote letters she would check out who they were to. Most of them were to Katherine's friend, but there were an unnatural amount going to Duke William Now, what she just witness she knew her guess was correct. Katherine was in love with the duke. `I'll make the plans tonight and send letters in the morning' the grandmother thought to herself. She slowly closed the door to her granddaughter' room, and tip-toed to the end of the hall to make sure she was out of ear shot of her granddaughters' room.
The next day, Katherine work up around noon and 5 maids came in to dress her. She wore a silk red dress and her hair in a French up due. She left her room and went downstairs to the dining room. When she entered the room her grandmother was at the table drinking some tea and eating the biscuits that the servants brought in, more happily than she normally does. Katherine walked over to her grandmother and kissed her on the cheek.
"Good morning, grandmother. You look very happy this morning," she said sitting next to her.
"Good morning, dear," she replied after taking a sip of her tea.
As Katherine sat there and looked at her grandmother, she saw the only person that remembered the way of the old days. She would be very strict at time and show no emotion, but she did it for the best, and she loved her for doing so. When her grandmother looked up from tea and biscuits, she saw the admiration in the eyes of her beloved grandchild, which made her smile on the inside.
"Katherine," said her grandmother putting down her tea cup then looking at her.
"Yes, ma'am," replied Katherine looking over the rim of her tea cup?
"We are going to have guests come over."
"Really," she said with patience, and did her best to suppress her excitement?
"Yes, we are and I'm going to London…."
Katherine's excitement started to fade away when she heard about her grandmother's departure, when they had guests coming over. Her face had confusion written all over it and her grandmother saw this.
"…to talk to the Queen and King about something as well as visit your mother and father."
Katherine's heart sank to the pits of her belly. She knew that it would take a couple of hours to get to the King and Queens castle but a day or 2 to get to her parents house. `Why now? Why do I have to be the only one to host the party?' thought Katherine to herself but she took a deep breath and asked her grandmother the question of preparation.
"Okay, but how many guests are we expecting," Katherine asked calmly, knowing that her grandmother would never invite more than 5 people to the house at a time. She couldn't stand that many people in her house.
"Around 25 guests are coming to the house."
Katherine was in utter surprise and shocked. Her grandmother broke her own rule that she had kept for more than 50 years.
She put her hand up to silence Katherine before she could say a word.
"I know you not going to like what I'm about to say, but they are here to court you…"
It took Katherine a little time to figure out what her grandmother said. When she did she was flustered in the face and was hurt in the pride. `Doesn't grandmother trust me to make the right choice,' thought Katherine keeping a calm look on the outside but on the inside she was starting to panic.
"After you choose your choice in a month's time, you shall be married that Sunday."
Katherine's jaw dropped dramatically low very unladylike and her grandmother slapped her hand for acting like a child.
"…Grandmother, why? I'm not ready to settle down yet."
I was your age when I had your mother, so never you mind this `I'm not ready" nonsense. They will come in an hour or two. So hurry along and start making arrangements for the rooms, dinner plans, activities, invite some of your friends over as well, they need all the help they can get," she said in a dictating tone, except for the last part which she started to mumble, so Katherine wouldn't hear.
Her grandmother got up form her chair and a maid brought her cloak and her gloves to her. She started to the front door then she stopped and turned at the dining room door, and looked at Katherine.
"Aren't you going to walk me to the door," asked her grandmother as if nothing she said happened. Katherine nodded and compelled her self to do so.
She was angry with her grandmother, doing this to her. `Why must she make me choose when I'm not ready' Katherine thought to herself waking silently next to her grandmother. Her grandmother had a smile on her face and her eyes gleamed with happiness. When Katherine saw this she sighed, because she didn't want to let her grandmother down. The coachman opened the door to the carriage to let her grandmother in. Her grandmother stopped and looked at her up and down with pride in her face as she did this.
"Katherine, you are a sweet and kind hearted girl. Also, a smart and intelligent young lady so you have nothing to be worried about. Send me a letter on how things are going, is that understood?"
Katherine nodded at her grandmothers' question. Then she helped her grandmother into the carriage and waved her good-bye. When the carriage was out of sight she dashed back to the house.
"Michelle, Rachel, Sarah, Michael, Richard come to the library right away," yelled Katherine panicking and running to the library.
When she entered the room she sat at her grandfather's desk and started to write to her friends. The letters were informative, but they were short. She was done with at least 5 of them, when her servants arrived.
"You…you called…milady," said Michael who was trying to catch his breath.
Katherine gave a curt nod and started to write again while she gave her orders' to her servants.
"Okay as you probably heard, we are going to have guests over. Well, Michelle, I want anyone who is available to help you get the rooms prepared is that understood," directed Katherine, who was on her 12th letter. Michelle nodded when Katherine looked up and left the room immediately.
"Rachel, you are to prepare dinner plans and food. The cook, Ruth, will be in under your direction, and the messenger boy who is responsible for the food list. Tonight salad, soup, turkey, white wine, understood," said Katherine signing her last letter. Rachel nodded and did as Michelle did, leave immediately.
"Okay, Michael, you are to ride to give these to the women or daughter of the household, understood. Ride as fast as your horse will allow," directed Katherine standing up and handing the letters to Michael and pushing him out the door.
When he took her hint, he ran all the way to the stables. She, herself was walking towards the door, and stopped to turn and face the remaining 2 servants.
"You can't get instructions, just by standing there," she said with a stressed tone in her voice, and heading out the door with a basket in hand those 2 followed her quickly.
When they finally caught up with their mistress she was picking flowers. Katherine looked rather rushed, instead of her slow and taking time look when she picked flowers.
"Sarah you are to plan the activities fro the month they are to be here and you are to give me the ideas of every week you plan, understand? Now go," instructed Katherine, who was getting dirt all over her skirts and hands.
As soon as Sarah left, Richard was the only one left and he awaited his instruction. Katherine stood up and started to walk around the garden and forgot about Richard, until he gave a little cough.
"Hm…oh sorry Richard, I was preoccupied. Okay I want you to be in charge of everything. When Sarah is done with the planning look them over and cross the ones out you don't think are good, but when you are done with the revisions bring them to me. Also, look over the dinner plans, and the same actions are to be taken with the dinner plans like the activities. Finally, get some Gardner's in the back yard and make them fix it up, understand," stated Katherine now walking as fast as she could back to the house to get ready.
When she entered the house, she gave the flowers to a maid to put in vases around the house. She spotted Michael coming up the drive way and she ran to the door and at a fast walking pace she met up with him.
"Did everyone receive my letter and did anyone respond to it," asked Katherine as she waited while Michael got off his horse with lathered sweat over its body.
"Milady 10 of the 20 excepted your invitation, 6 out of the 10 will be coming tonight and the rest will come later in the week," replied Michael still trying to get his breath back.
"Thank you Michael, now go get yourself a glass of water then take a 15 minute break, and after your break you are to help the others. Tell the stable boy to give your horse the #3 package," said Katherine now heading towards the house again.
"Yes, milady, and thank you for your kindness," shouted Michael, but Katherine was busy to hear him.
When she entered the house it was a war area. The people of the mansion were running and cleaning all around the house trying to straighten things out. She stopped a maid and told her to bring Michelle to her chambers at once. The maid carrying a vase of flowers set them down at the nearest table and went to go find Michelle.
Katherine rushed up to her bed chambers and started to pick out her dress for tonight and taking her hair from its style. When she finished this, there was a knock on her door.
"Enter."
"You wanted to see me mistress."
"Yes, how many rooms are finished?"
"The west wing is all finished and now we are 10 rooms into the west wing."
"Good making progress. Have a person draw me a quick bath, so I don't smell or look horrible for our guests, will you?"
"Yes ma'am."
Then Michelle left Katherine's room and headed for the kitchen. Katherine paced in her room for 30 minutes waiting for her bath. She was mumbling to herself that she didn't hear the knock the first time, but she heard it the second time and let the servants bring the bath in and left as quick as they came.
Katherine got into the bath and started to wash herself. `This is probably the shortest bath I've ever taken' she thought to herself while getting out of the tub about 10 minutes after they delivered it. She called 3 maids to help her get dress for this evening. The maids left immediately to finish their others jobs.
After getting dress in an emerald green dress with her midnight hair hanging down instead of up, she went to her bedside tab to find William's hanky. To her disbelief, the hanky was not there. She started to grow frantic and started to look everywhere in her room. In her desk drawers, her closet, make up stand, but she couldn't find it. She looked out her window and saw the sun setting in the western sky. `It's time' was all she could say to herself and waked down the stairs to the front hall, where she was to greet her guests and where they would of course arrive. During this time, all she could think about was William's hanky and where it had gone to, but that left her mind, when the first knock came to the door. Richard answered the door in the utmost formal way Katherine took a deep breath and did her best to smile.
When Richard brought the first guest in her jaw dropped, but she shut her mouth before anyone could see. It was William. Butterflies announced themselves in her stomach, and she started to get nervous. William walked over to her and kissed her hand.
"We meet again my lady, and I'm here at your call," he teased and was holding out to her his hanky that he gave to her that night, and his lips lingered over her hand longer than a man dare to.
Katherine grew red and smiled lightly thinking to herself, `grandmother.'
