Chapter 1 - The Maidenless Village

Kagome’s got a new pair of shoes, and the gain waist no time breaking them in, as they head out once more from Kaede’s village in search of Naraku. After several days with neither a trace of Naraku’s scent or the Shikon no Tama, weariness and exhaustion was beginning to take its toll on the humans in the group.

Fumbling along, Kagome can't help but release a small sigh, one that Inuyasha immedietly picks up on.

“What is it?” He asks, his voice dripping with impatience.

Kagome, taken aback by the sudden break in the silence, fumbles with “Huh, wh…? Nothing.” as a response.

“Yeah right nothing!” Spits Inuyasha. “Keh, out with it!”

“I’m just a little tired, it’s nothing.” She insists.

Trying to help, Sango joins in, admitting “I’m a little tired too, actually…..”

Miroku sees where this is going, and adds “Perhaps we should stop for the night in the next village.”

“Feh, I’m not stopping so long as Naraku lives!” Inuyasha argued, “we can’t allow him to collect the last few shards!” Turning his gaze towards Sango, his voice suddenly became more gentle, as he stated

“He’ll kill Kohaku for the one in his back.”

Sango looked sad for a moment, Inuyasha caught a frightful glare from Kagome telling him he’d said the wrong thing. He’s always saying the wrong thing! Inuyasha was about to try his best at cheering Sango up a bit when a familiar sound echoed through the woods…

*SLAP*

As Miroku stood stroking the red hand print on his face, the group caught a smirk on Sango’s as she dishonestly stated that he had a “mosquito” on his cheek.

“So, I guess we’re camping under the stars again tonight?” asked Shippo, who’d felt left out of the conversation up to this point.

Inuyasha took a quick look around the group, Miroku was trying to look innocently at Sango, who’s glair indicated she really wasn’t in the mood. Kagome tried her best to look as energetic as possible, but she wasn’t fooling anyone. They’d done more straight walking these last few days then they had in previous months!

“Keh, we can head towards the next village,” Inuyasha finally caved, “you guys are no good to me if you’re too weak to fight.”

As they approached the village, Inuyasha and Shippo both looked up in sudden alert, hearing a scream only their demonic ears could detect.

“You heard that too?” Inuyasha asked Shippo

“Yeah” The kit replied, in a shaky voice.

Kagome looked concerned, and switching her glance between Inuyasha and Shippo, quietly asked “Heard what?”

Without responding to her question, Inuyasha bolted forward flying through the woods, Shippo quickly instructed them all to follow and Sango tossed the small Kirara she had been carrying into the air, the two-tails transforming into her larger form for them to ride.

***********************

The young girl screamed and ran as fast as she could, appearing to have been attached. An older girl, her sister, running after her and calling her name.

“Hoshi! Hoshi come back here, it’ll be ok!” Nika cried.

Hoshi continued to run, crying, until suddenly she stopped, crashing right into the tense hanyo.

“Who are you? Are you ok? What are you running from? What happened here? Are you from the village?”

Kirara on the approach, Kagome called down from the neko’s back “Inuyasha…… what’s going on?”

“I don’t know yet!” He shouted back impatiently.

Hoshi, the young girl, just stood there in fear for a moment, gasping at Inuyasha. About age 12, she was dressed in commoner garb, and had scrapped elbows and knees, indicating she’d fallen many times while running through the woods in her bare feet.

Suddenly, an older girl also appeared on the scene, proclaiming “Hoshi! There you are!”

Nika looked up seeing the group of friends around her sister and mumbled “Um, thanks for catching her. Sorry if she was a bother,” she paused, obviously nervous about Inuyasha, “we’ll be heading back now.”

At that, Nika grabbed her little sister’s arm, and attempted to lead her back to the village.

“No!” The younger sister screamed. Then suddenly, Hoshi pulled away, and ran straight to Inuyasha. “Help me! I don’t want to bed Kojin!”

This comment gave the group, especially Kagome, all very troubled expressions. Finally Inuyasha looked up from the child who was hugging his waist and demanded to know the meaning of this.

“It’s a long story.” Nika just to excuse, “Outsiders do not understand, please return my sister, it’s the only way.”

“Feh, I’ll do no such thing until you explain yourself.” Inuyasha demanded.

“Why is this child being forced to bed a male?” asked a concerned Sango.

Nika looked sad, it was true she didn’t want to hurt her sister, and she remembered the trauma of her own experience 2 years prior, though for her, she was 14, poor Hoshi is only 12!

“Very well,” She sighed “I’ll explain, but we must get back to the safety of our village, Hoshi is in much greater danger being this far out into the woods.”

Miroku took this opportunity to speak, seeing as the young woman was around Kagome’s age, and not too hard on the eyes. “Don’t worry miss, we won’t let anything happen to you or your sister. If you wish, I will gladly stand watch over you for the night. My friends and I were seeking room and board for….”

*GLARE* A dark beam of jealousy exuded from Sango’s eyes, cutting him off in mid sentence.

“Sango, Sango! You miss understand!” He pleaded. “I was merely suggesting that we ALL share room and board with the young la…er….girls. We were seeking to stay in the village were we not?”

Inuyasha’s hearing picked up Shippo’s mumble of “Some things never change.”

Kagome, in a half attempt of defending Miroku as well as attempting to acquire her increasingly desired rest for the night, decided to speak up. “You know, Inuyasha….” She began, “….we probably should stay with them if there is any danger around.”

“Keh, whatever.”

“Now then,” Kagome said, turning to the older sister. “You said you would explain yourself, shall we start with your name?”

Nika introduced herself, then began the long explanation as they walked towards the village. Hoshi still gripped Inuyasha’s hand as her protector, as he’d originally came to her aid upon hearing her screams.

“My name is Nika. My sister Hoshi and I were both born in our village, as were our parents, and their parents before them, for several generations. That is why our people refused to abandon our valley when the youkai came.”

“What sort of youkai?” Asked Sango

“A horrible succubus that used to consume the energy and souls of our men before the elders put wards up around our boarders. But the wards only protect against the magic of her aura, not against herself or her minions. A maiden still faces danger to this day!”

“I don’t think I understand.” Kagome interrupted, “If this youkai is a succubus, consuming the souls of men, why are the maidens in danger?”

“And who are these minions?” Inuyasha asked skeptically. “I’ve never known a succubus to require servants.” He trailed off.

“Our old maidens are the minions!” Nika cried. “She captured them, infected them with something, any pure maiden is at risk.”

Sango didn’t miss Kagome’s suddenly look of horror as Nika continued with her explanation.

“The succubus, a pure female youkai, uses sex to lure men, but unlike a normal succubus, she never mates. Instead, she reproduces using the maidens, inserting her essence into them, the youkai blood grows stronger until they become succubus hanyos! Her hanyos! She used to use them to trick men into leaving the safety of the village, where she could consume them! Once the men of our village realized this, they had no choice but to slay those who were proved servants of the youkai, and to prevent any new maidens from being captured by her, it is now ruled that every young girl, once becoming a physical woman, is required to mate.”

Upon hearing her last statement, the group stopped for a moment, taken aback by the situation. Why not just move the village? Surely their history on that land was not worth all the hardships. During their walk, Hoshi had released Inuyasha’s hand, and moved to walk beside her sister. Hoshi knew it was for her own good, she was simply scared, too young at heart for the circumstance that befell her. As they reached the village, Nika realized herself what she had just said, and looking up, her face showed both embarrassment and concerned for the female companions she had acquired.

“So anyway, er, ALL pure maidens are at risk.” She muttered as tactfully as she could.

Kagome flashed another look to Sango, as her earlier concern turned out to be genuine.

Seeing the looks passed between her two new female companions, Naika cleared her throat, and continued.

“The elders have arranged the services of the younger men for the girls here who come into age, as well as for, uh, visitors… If you need-” she was cut off.

“Excuse Me!” Kagome asked, shocked and embarrassed by the implications of her concern voiced out loud.

To show her own disgust, Sango added, sarcastically “Thank you, but we won’t be needing your services…..”

Shippo looked up at Inuyasha, “Maybe we shouldn’t stay in this village.” He voiced, “If Kagome and Sango are in danger.”

Inuyasha looked as though he hadn’t heard Shippo, though he had. In fact, he’d already been thinking the same thing, and under the circumstances, thought he’d likely not get any objections from the group when he insisted they press onward to the next village. Miroku was busily daydreaming about what it would have been like to have been born in this village, and be hired by the elders to perform those certain services for each and every newly blossomed maiden.

Seeing her fiancé’s far off look, Sango suddenly jabbed Miroku with her elbow.

“Something on your mind Letch?”

“Er…wha? er… No, not at all!” He ever so eloquently stuttered, “I was merely thinking that Shippo is right, we should definitely press on and get Kagome…. and you…..out of danger.”

Miroku choked back fear for a moment at his almost blunder, afraid he’d receive another elbow to the ribs for it. The near slip up had made Sango blush slightly, but she hid it well from Inuyasha and Shippo, Kagome having already been confided into one night at the hot springs. Inuyasha, seemingly oblivious as ever, simply stated matter-of-factly “Fine, it’s settled.”

Suddenly, there was a chill in the air, the outer forest rim seemed to glow with a demonic aura, and it was getting closer!

“I SMELL A PURE MAIDEN!”
