Chapter 4 - The Longest Night in the World

Two hours had already passed and everyone else in the household was fast asleep. Inuyasha made sure to listen for abstract breathing or heartbeats which would indicate somebody awake, but everyone was smooth and keeping a calming rhythm. Everyone but Kagome that is! Inuyasha could hear her heart pounding in her chest, it seemed to beat faster every time she looked at him. Her breathing was shaky. Not only was she nervous, but she was also weakened from the youkai’s poison. The hanyou could smell it on her, ever so slight the change was, he could smell the youkai’s scent slowly increasing in Kagome. He felt the monk’s calculations were right, by sunrise, she’d be gone. Time to be a man!

Ok, everyone else is asleep, not that it matters much since they all know what’s going on in here anyway. What’s SUPPOSED to be going on here anyway! Come on Inuyasha, get a hold of yourself!

“Kagome?” He asked, slight hesitation present in his voice.

“Yes?” Was her response, depression audible in hers over the entire situation. Getting a little more aggravated, but only at himself, he unintentionally snapped “Let’s just do this thing, ok?”

“Easy for you to say…” She chuckled, not offended by his outburst.

“Hey, you’re the one who’s poisoned, I’d think this’d be easier for you…not wanting to die and all…” He mumbled, blushing, just babbling stupidly due to his own embarrassment.

“Of COURSE I don’t want to DIE.” She yelled out, but while forcing a laugh, and then continued softer “I’m just…I’m still nervous, okay??”

“I’m nervous too,” he admitted, “I know it’ll hurt you, and I don’t want to hurt you…..”

“Don’t worry about that, that’s natural.”

“Nothing about this is natural.” He stated blandly, then once again feeling the self-loathing rise to the surface, and remembering that Kagome never did before acknowledge whether or not she’d forgiven him when he’d asked it of her, he suddenly spat out… “Shit, Kagome, I’m really sorry about the mess I’ve got you in. Please forgive me will you? Say you’ll forgive me! Please!”

“Of course I forgive you.” She replyed. “You told me to run away, remember? I’m the one that stayed and fought, I brought this on myself.” Trying to shift the blame to herself.

Inuyasha had already thought of the point Kagome just brought up, but for once, he actually wasn’t in the mood to point out her errors and call her an idiot for not doing what she was told. The bottom line was, had he been stronger, he would have been able to protect her. Just as he was completing this thought, he noticed Kagome taking off her shoes and socks.

“You…er…um..” he started choking… “don’t have to get naked if you didn’t want to.” He paused again, gulping. “We could probably just-” He was cut off.

“Inuyasha, if we’re gonna do this, we’re gonna do it right. Now sit down and……”

*THUD*

“OOPS, Sorry!” We’re off to a great start, aren’t we? She chuckled to herself.

But he wasn’t angry, knowing it was an accident, and they had more important things to worry about. In stride, he sat down on the bed besides Kagome, where she had attempted to direct him to only moments prior. He stared into her eyes for a moment, feeling his blush rising, but also noticed an even deeper blush appearing on Kagome’s cheeks. In an attempt to break the silence, she spoke…

“You know, now that I think about it, it’s not like we haven’t already both seen each other naked a couple of times…”

What was supposed to break the ice ended up causing the deepest yet of any shade of red Kagome had ever seen appear on Inuyasha’s face. It seemed as if he’d disappeared into his haori, only white hair and doggy ears remaining visible. He recalled the time he’d saved her from the Sage who was going to boil her alive as food for the human face fruit tree. He had been in his human form, and was more overwhelmed with sensations than he would ever let on.

“Um, let’s just take this one step at a time…” Kagome said, as she slowly pulled off Inuyasha’s haori. Understanding the situation, he cooperated and finished by removing his under haori. After all, he’s been without a shirt many times…. Though he was usually being bandaged at those times.

Kagome saw his wounds from when he was flung against the tree in battle, she hadn’t realized he’d been so hurt, he hadn’t acted like it at all, which was typical Inuyasha, come to think of it.

“Oh, you’re injured!” She yelped, upon seeing the wound.

“Keh, mever mind that,” He grumbled, “it’s just a scratch, it’ll heal.”

It wasn’t just a scratch, but he was right, it would heal. Kagome wiped away the dried blood on his shoulder, and caught herself leaving her hand there much longer than normal…..

Inuyasha’s eyes moved towards her hand, then up to her face. Here we go… he thought. He gently leaned forward, and kissed her softly. Kagome wasn’t surprised at first, this technically not being their first kiss, after all. But when his kiss became more passionate, she gasped and quickly kissed him back with equal desire, finally able to show him her love, even if it was only for one night.

“There, hard part’s over…” He chuckled to himself upon breaking the kiss. “Now we should…..” he started, but never finished, as he was interrupted by Kagome’s suddenly proclamation.

“Inuyasha….I love you!”

“Na...Nani? Where did….where did that come from?” He was visibly flustered.

“I’m sorry,” she started, not usually the best phrase to follow her preceding one, nevertheless she continued… “I just thought you should know, I didn’t want you to think for a second that deep down I didn’t want this.” Just not under these circumstances… she finished in her thoughts.

Understanding her logic, he knew she deserved to hear her words repeated back to herself. That was how he felt wasn’t it? Yes, it was. He did love her.

“Kagome, I…..” he started, but blushed and paused. “You don’t have to say anything.” He heard her remark, but he ignored her, and after a brief moment of courage hunting, he swallowed, and spoke.

“Kagome, I…..need you in my life, I’ve told you that before. Remember, I’m not going to die with Kikyo, I’m not going to die with her because…..I want to live, but not just that, I want to live with you, Kagome. I….I love you too.”

Upon hearing his words, Kagome’s heart took flight, she lunged herself forward, and despite the sudden pain that caused her, she cheerfully wrapped her arms around the hanyou’s neck, hugging and kissing him. Then, he slowly leaned forward, causing her to lay on the bed beneath him, and slowly, more clothing was removed. What was only minutes seemed like hours, and hours seemed like days, as the two explored, and enjoyed, each other. Inuyasha’s only passing thought of Kikyo was to compare how the two Mikos were nothing alike, Kagome was so alive, literally. He decided to himself then and there, that no matter what, he would be with Kagome, always. The pair were snapped from their blissful la-la-lands upon the realization that the demonic aura within Kagome suddenly perished. After pausing for a moment, and double-checking her scent, Inuyasha was positive, no youkai remained at all.

“Uh, it worked….” He mumbled.

Inuyasha gave Kagome a quick unsure expression that said to her ‘um, what now?’ and she answered by reaching her hands up to Inuyasha’s neck, pulling his face inward for another kiss, as the two continued to enjoy their night.
