InuYasha looked down at the slow, pathetic humans walking around as if nothing was wrong. There they were, slowly going about their business in the middle of the dark, comepletely clueless of the demons waiting in the alleys to terrorize and most likely eat them. They were just such a stupid damn race. It was pathetically dispicable. He hated them all for it, and yet he was here every night, his sole purpose being to protect them, the very things that he hated so. And why? Because of her. The stupid woman who had mated with a youkai. The only woman to ever truly care about him. His mother.

In truth, he had loved her with all of his heart, stupid or not. Now, he'd thought about this many times, as he rarely had anything to do but save the same, pathetic race as his mother. The only difference between her and them was that she was brilliant. She knew much about many things. Including youkai. She had grown up on a shrine, that was now called 'Sunset Shrine'. It was on a hill that you could easily see the sunset from, and he had many times. It was his favorite place to watch. Mostly because in the forest surrounding it on every side, there was much youkai action, meaning more action for him. They were mostly minor youkai, like snakes and centipedes, but they kept him busy and didn't make him feel guilty. They may be minor to him, but to a human, they'd be a major threat.

A different family lived on the shrine now. He didn't know the family name, but he knew what everyone was called. There was a grandpa and mother, as evident by frequently being called 'Jii-chan' and 'Haha'. Then there was a teenage girl named Kagome and a younger, pre-pubescent(But almost there) boy named Souta. And a cat... He loved to tease that cat when nobody was around. Usually, there was only a few moments to tease until that girl came out looking for the cat. He guessed that the cat, Buyo, had been with them for a while, because she got quite worried when she couldn't find him quickly.

InuYasha snapped back to the present when he heard the front door to their house, at the back of the shrine, open and slam shut behind the girl. "Buuuyyooooooo!!!" She called, her hands cupped around her mouth to project her voice over the shrine grounds. He looked down at the cat, who was clawing at the base of the tree and looking up at him. He woofed softly, telling the animal that they would see each other tomorrow, and to go to it's master. The cat turned and scampered off, his tail in the air.

He turned his attention back to the girl, watching her eyes dart about nervously. He knew that she didn't like to be outside after dark(Or before dark, for that matter) alone. She watched too many scary movies. She would unconciously stay close to the house if she went out at all, and if she had to leave the house, she would nearly run to get whatever she needed and get back to the house. Sometimes when she was in her room alone, she would complain to herself that she was paranoid when she felt like there were eyes on her. He felt bad sometimes. Here he was, watching her to protect her, and it was scaring her.

He frowned as a scenario came to mind. He even made her jump sometimes when she was watching the movies that she loved so much. He would step on something, or bump into something. One time, he'd accidentaly tapped the glass of the window, and she'd screamed and rolled off the couch. She'd been watching 'The Descent'. It was actually a very scary movie, for something made by a human. He had a sneaking suspicion that the man who'd made the story had known that youkai existed, as the movie was all about some other race that was more... advanced physically than the humans. The only thing that wasn't better was their eye-sight. The stupid things couldn't see, but that was okay, considering the fact that they were underground, in the darkness.

His attention was yanked back to the girl as she was being stalked by a minor youkai. She didn't know she was being stalked. Her eyes still glanced about nervously, though. Then, she began doing something she hadn't ever done before. She started talking. "It's okay Kagome, no one's out here. They'd have to pay admission, and we made sure that everyone was out before sundown. It's alright, you're just imagining it. No one could POSSIBLY be watching you." She nervously twittered to herself. A slight frown formed on his brow. She must have known on some subconcious level that she was going to be attacked. This was something he'd never witnessed from a human. He realized that the youkai was about to pounce on her, and realized another thing; He had no choice. He'd let it get to far, and he'd have to show her that he was there. But, that meant taking her with him... His upper lip curled. He didn't want any pathetic company on his way back in the morning, but it was either that, or let her be eaten by the damned worm. He jumped down on her, clamping his hand over her mouth and putting a finger to his lips in a hushing signal. Then, he jumped onto the worm and sliced it lengthwise quickly, hopping off into the night with Kagome struggling in his arms.

Kagome tried to scream as the boy jumped into her line of sight, but his hand was over her mouth too quick. She blushed as he pulled her body flush against his and started to thrash wildy, trying to release his hold on her waist. When he landed and killed the gigantic worm, her scream almost made it through his hand as her eyes went wide. She panted through her nose as they hopped over buildings, clinging to him because she was afraid he would drop her. The ground was a far ways below them. Eventually, she was lulled to sleep by the constant rocking motion of their bodies as he jumped steadily from building to building.
