Last time: Kaede remained silent. The lantern was blown out and now the whole village was tucked under a blanket of darkness, the rims of the small huts being only lit by the moonlight while Kagome slept without a care on her side of the well…was there any hope?
..:o0o:..
It was a warm summer day and the air was fresh and clean…Kagome’s POV
The light breeze blew the hair across my face and it tickled my cheek. Inuyasha and I leaned back against the well talking, I’m not sure why we were here but…its not like I’m complaining! I love his company…
He was sharing things with me, stuff that I never thought he would tell me. He was pouring out his heart to me about his childhood and all I could do was listen intently. What should I say? If I were him what would I want to hear?...I feel so…so different around him. He can be a jerk but he’s kind when he really wants to be. His face looks so radiant in the sunlight. What a beautiful day…..
I was roughly jerked from my thoughts by the sudden darkness. I began falling…where is Inuyasha? He was falling beside me, a look of terror on his face…it scared me…what’s wrong...I opened my mouth to speak but I couldn’t. My mouth was paralyzed. Shades of red and purple swirled around us accompanied by bright shining stars; It may have actually been a pretty sight if I wasn’t still falling. Inuyasha quickly grabbed my hand and fear overcame me. I instinctively tightened my grip on his hand, being mindful of his claws. The purple slowly faded and a red glow now surrounded us…it made my stomach twist into knots. The red glow burs into flame the second Inuyasha and I hit the ground, letting go of each others hand to survey our foreign surroundings.
‘What….charcle...?.’
It was scorching hot down here.
‘Where am I?’
I struggled to gain control of myself and finally found my quivering voice.
“Inuyasha… Inuyasha, where are we!” I swung him around to reveal my pleading face. “Get us out of here! Please…” I begged. Fresh tears pricked the corner of my eyes . The fire began to close in on us. Inuyasha suddenly pulled me into a tight embrace and I buried my face in his shoulder
‘we are going to die…this is it…everything was so perfect before…I think I know now…I think I’ve realized I do love him…its too late….’
I quickly pulled away from Inuyasha, with a bit too much force and began falling backwards…into the oncoming flame. He reached out his hand to me, screaming my name but it was too late, and even I knew it…
End POV
“NO!” Kagome shot up on her bed breathing heavily, sweat down her face she took in her surroundings. She was back in her room.
“Just a dream…” Kagome whispered to herself breathing in deeply and trying desperately to calm down. She laid back down and looked at her clock- 1:30 AM.
“Awh, man! I’ll never get back to sleep!” The raven haired girl shut her eyes tight but then realizing it was no use she quietly made her way downstairs for some water, being respectful of the other members of the household sleeping. She was still slightly trembling from her surprise nightmare. She crept back upstairs and sat upright in her bed, staring at the wall while taking small sips of her water.
Okay, what just happened? I haven’t had a nightmare since ever- and especially one with Inuyasha in it!
Kagome suddenly remembered what she said in her dream, a look of intense thought plastered on her face.
‘Do I...do I really love...Inuyasha. He has always been around for me, well most of the time. And he must care for me at least a bit…what am I thinking? He’s in love with someone else. He loves kikyo…
“He loves kikyo…” she repeated quietly out loud determined to get it through her head.
‘As much as it pains me to say it…He could never be mine…’ sigh She finally set her empty glass on the table and snuggled back into her bed. ‘Why does this have to be so complicated… But I do love him, but he could never return my feelings yet without him…I feel so empty, like I know a part of me is missing…I can’t help it if I love him right? Right…’
With those thoughts Kagome drifted back to sleep, but less than 6 hours later she was brutally awaken by her alarm clock.
..:o0o:..
“Great, time to get ready to go back to the feudal era!” Kagome said , her voice dripping with sarcasm. After carelessly hopping out of bed and throwing on a pair of jeans with a soft pink wool sweater, she got ready in the bathroom and was soon downstairs looking for some breakfast. Kagome was greeted by a cheery middle aged woman at the bottom of the stairs.“Good morning Kagome, you’re sure up early! It’s Saturday you know.”
“Morning mom! I told Inuyasha that I would be back early today if he let me stay the whole week here.” Kagome rolled her eyes remembering their last argument.
‘So pointless…’
“It took 20 minutes of begging to get him to agree, geeze…” Kagome sat down at the table and waited for her mom who was fixing something up for her in the kitchen.
After a rushed breakfast Kagome said good-bye and ran out of the door. She burst into the shrine and jumped cheerfully down the well.
When she finally got to the other side and climbed out she was surprised not too see Inuyasha waiting for her.
‘ that’s strange’ Kagome thought to herself ; ‘ For the past while he’s always been waiting for me.’ “Oh well, probably busy at the village, I would have taken my time if I knew coming back wouldn’t be that important to him!” and with that she started walking on her way to the village.
She was only a few feet away from the well when she felt a huge wave a power go through her. She stopped abruptly and glared suspiciously into the trees that surrounded the clearing.
‘Creepy. This place gives me a weird feeling…’
She decided to keep walking when she tripped on an uneven piece of land and fell to the ground. She rose a hand up to her face to brush the dirt off of her cheek. “What a great way to start the day!” Kagome exclaimed , again with sarcasm laced into her voice.
“ What was that?” Kagome peeled herself off the ground and sat knees bent looking at what had tempted her fall. ‘A crater…what could have caused this?’ Just looking at this gave her this weird feeling, her stomach twisted again into an all too familiar knot. Kagome gasped and thought back to her nightmare ‘ This is the same feeling...’
“What happened here?” she breathed, more silent then a whisper. She ran her fingers across the dirt inside the crater but quickly pulled it away as if she had been burnt.
“Who was here? I’ve never felt this kind of power before…I hope Inuyasha is alright!” She shot off the ground and her careless walk from before quickly changed into a desperate run. She needed to know what happened there!
..:o0o:..
She ran through Kaede’s door and at first contact it broke off and slumped to the wooden floor. She looked back at the door in confusion. “Whoa, I guess I’m not the only one who’s run through here.” Kagome took another quick look at the door, shrugged and continued inside.“ Inuyasha! Sango! Miroku! Someone!” She quickly made her way through the small house, running her hand against the wall that she walked along.
The hut was empty. The rays of the sun illuminated the dust that abided in the room. She looked on her left to find ruffled sheets and sleeping mats. Everyone of them was messy except one who lay perfectly untouched in the corner. ‘Probably Inuyasha’s, he prefers a tree or sleeping sitting up against the wall instead of a nice bed anyway…’
To her right was a burnt out lantern, looking so insignificant in the daylight…
“Kagome!” Shippo ran and jumped into Kagome’s arms completely shaking her back into reality. He said her name so urgently; she couldn’t tell if he was laughing crying. Before she had a chance to say anything Shippo pulled away from her ,completely exposing his teary face, and trying to tell her something. ‘he couldn’t have missed me that much…’ Kagome thought as she tried to make out what Shippo was saying between his shaken gasps.
Before the little fox could get too far with the story Miroku, Sango and Kaede came into the room through the backdoor.
“Hi you guys!” Kagome set Shippo down to get a better look at her friends, they seemed really upset. As she surveyed the bunch she realized someone wasn’t there. “Um, where is Inuyasha?” She asked, not too worried. ‘He can take care of himself, plus…don’t want to jump to conclusions.’
“Come sit down Kagome, we have something to tell you.” The monk began to walk before looking over his shoulder to a frustrated Kitsune. “Shippo,” Shippo’s head shot up to reveal his tear stained cheeks. Kagome felt a bit guilty for not comforting him more. “go wait with Kilala outside, we will be with you in a second.”
With an agreeing nod Shippo made his way out side while Miroku motioned for Kagome to come sit down beside him. Kaede and Sango followed.
‘This will be hard’ Thought Sango ‘Kagome was probably closer with Inuyasha than any of us ever were, she’s been with him longer…’
“ Inuyasha is gone.” Miroku stated plainly feeling kind of stupid after for not using a more explanatory choice of words. Despite the small bit of worry that tugged at her heart she raised an eyebrow at him. “Did he go to Toto-Sai about his sword again? Where is he?”
‘couldn’t have gone far…’ Kagome was trying to reassure herself.
“ I mean that he’s been taken, Kikyo took him…to hell with her.” Miroku finally finished, head bowed eyes averted- he didn’t even want to know how she would take it, he didn’t even know if she would still even want to stay here. Kagome’s mouth was wide open in shock , she was at loss for words so she looked to her friends for further explaining, They all refused to look at her so she forced herself to gain control and spoke “when did this happen…is this a joke?” Kagome’s voice was slightly quieter than usual and had a bit of a quiver to it. Sango looked up to meet Kagome’s eyes, they looked pained and Sango felt a bit guilty. “Do you think I would joke about this? It happened last night…. In the clearing…I was there...” Sango shut her eyes tight trying to erase the memory of the previous night.
“She can’t just take him!” Kagome jumped up from her spot on the floor in rage.
“Well she did! And there seems to be nothing we can do about it!” Miroku was beginning to anger himself. “Fighting will get ye nowhere.” Kaede intervened calmly.
“What do you mean there is no way to get him back? We have too! We cant just forget about him!” Kagome eyes became glossy with unshed tears and she slumped back down to the ground. This was too much for her.
Sango placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder while tears began a steady flow down Kagome’s cheeks. “We are all upset about it Kagome, but it will be alright in the end I promise…” Sango was trying to reassure herself as well. If Kaede said there was no way there probably wasn’t. “ I need some time alone...” Kagome let out just above a whisper. If Sango wasn’t so close she probably wouldn’t have heard it. “ I understand.” Sango nodded her head and Kagome slowly made her way to the front door, paying no attention to the bamboo roll that used to cover the door that crunched under her feet. Kagome walked through the forest and coincidently ended up at the clearing. The familiarity caught her attention and she made her way over to the well to lean her head back against it, just like in her dream…
‘That explains the funny feeling around this place. I never knew Kikyo possessed that kind of power…the power to take someone all the way to the underworld…’
Kagome let her head drop in depression.
‘At least he got what he wanted…he’s with kikyo now. He wanted to be with the woman he loves…It would be selfish of me to even try to interfere…but I did love him….I still love him…but he’s…gone.’
..:o0o:..
Kaede, Sango and Miroku all sat on wooden floor of the hut. All was silent. No one really knew what to say. “I hope she’s o.k.” Sango was the first to break the uncomfortable silence. “She will be fine Sango, ye and Miroku need not to worry.” Kaede looked up from the spec of dirt on the floor she had been staring at. “What can we do? Is there anyway we can help her through this.” Miroku spoke up concern evident in his voice.“ I think the best thing we could do for Kagome right now is too… let her go.” Sango’s expression remained impossible to read as she shared her opinion with the two people beside her.
“ What! What do you mean by that lady Sango?” Miroku was confused.
The demon exterminator thought hard before speaking again. “Inuyasha was really important to her and I’m sure you’ve noticed that. Kagome would have most likely been better off if she never knew us. She stayed here because she felt obligated to help find the pieces of the Shikon jewel with Inuyasha, but now that he’s gone…there is really no reason for her to stay…”
“We can’t just force her back home, she will always be haunted my memories of this place and the one she loved, it’s not right!” Miroku’s objection made Sango’s head snap up, but before she could defend her proposition Kaede spoke: “It is in her best interest, but I’ve been thinking as well and there is a way to make her forget this place.”
Sango and Miroku both looked at her angry and unsure. Kaede wasn’t even looking at them so she continued.
“I have found a spell in this book that I can place on Kagome. It is a memory spell. It will be impossible for her to forget absolutely everything but since she is only a visitor in this world she won’t be able to remember events that took place here and will be capable of living a normal life in her country. The spell will only last until the Shikon jewel is destroyed, only then will it will be safe for her to return to this world. Before you answer me think about it, Naraku will be difficult to defeat on our own, he will clearly just keep getting stronger and more formidable than he already is. When one day, it is possible that he will destroy us all and this whole world will be plunged into darkness and evil will reign. I do not want to endanger her life further more. Inuyasha was her sworn protector and now that he’s gone… It will be harder insure her safety…”
Sango and Miroku were in deep thought. They both cherish Kagome as a friend but keeping her here for that reason only would be selfish of them.
“ If its in her best interest, as much as it pains me to say this….I will l et her go” Sango refused to meet the gaze of an outraged Miroku. “What do you mean Sango? We can’t just send her back! I thought she actually meant something as a friend to you but I was wrong. Listen to yourself….what are you thinking!…” A single tear flowed slowly down Sango’s cheek and hit the ground with a small plink. Miroku quickly looked up to face her. He opened his mouth to speak but stopped when he noticed she was crying. “Sango…I’m sorry…” Miroku wrapped his arm around her shoulder for comfort. Not just hers but his own. Sango looked up so she could look Miroku directly in the eye.
“Kagome is a dear friend to me, but I could never stand watching her get hurt, and I know that just us alone is not powerful enough to always keep her out of harms way.” Miroku
looked up and straight at Kaede. The old woman looked down and away from them both.
The monk spoke quietly…
“ If it will keep Kagome from hurting more…then I will let her go…” Miroku bowed his head aswell. The priestess finally looked up and gave them both a reassuring smile.
“ We will do it for ye Kagome…”
The three began planning keeping Shippo out of there discussion. It would be harder on Shippo than anyone for Kagome to leave since he considers her like a second mother. The spell could only be preformed on the night of a full moon. But you see the only night with a full moon was two days from then, that will be the day they will say good-bye to Kagome…forever. Unfortunately Kagome will be forgetting them but the memory of her will never fade from the minds of those she’s met and the impact she had on their lives…
..:o0o:..
It was getting late and Kagome realized the others were probably starting to worry about her. ‘Sulking about Inuyasha will get me nowhere… but the pain I feel right now is so overwhelming…and the fact that there’s nothing I can do to help him…even if he wants my help. I don’t even know. He probably doesn’t even miss me.’Kagome’s heart felt like it had been brutally crushed. She slowly got up from the ground and headed back to the village. She stopped at a large tree…the sacred tree. Memories of when she and Inuyasha first met flooded her mind and she dropped to her knees in despair.
‘ I could never forget…its impossible to forget him...will this haunt me forever? Is it possible to escape this pain? I’m not sure...but I know one thing,’
Kagome got up from the ground .She raised her head to face the tree directly.
“I have to be strong without him.” The wind tousled her hair and the sunset glistened gently off of it. She looked more closely at the tree and her confidence drained from her.
‘What will I do now? I don’t know if I could even stay here any longer.’
“But the jewel still has to be completed. I broke it and if Inuyasha were here…he would want me to find all the shards. But it will never be the same without him.”
A small smile made its way across Kagome’s face as she remembered one of her fights with the stubborn hanyou.
..:flashback:..
“ I have stuff to do Inuyasha! I have to go home!” Kagome dug her heels into the ground to keep from running right into Inuyasha who just jumped in front of her.
“ Do it when the jewels completed! Then you can spend all the time you want in your time, its not like I would care!” Inuyasha took a determined stance in front of the well, blocking off Kagome’s path.
“Inuyasha, I’m asking you nicely…please get out of my way. I have finals to study for!”
“I aint going nowhere. You break it ,you find it.” Inuyasha stuck out his chin in defiance.
Kagome’s anger was getting the better of her. “Move NOW Inuyasha! I’m not going to ask you again.”
“Wutcha gonna do about it?” Inuyasha honestly wanted to know.
“ I’m going to SIT you!” Kagome muffled her laugh as Inuyasha plummeted face first into the dusty ground. Of course Inuyasha heard her giggle with his sensitive ears.
“DAMNIT!” Inuyasha yelled into the dirt as Kagome stepped right on and over him to access the well.
“ Bye Inuyasha! Don’t miss me too much” And with that she left.
end flashback
She missed him alot. Kagome’s unsure voice ran through her own head.
‘ If I loved him, I would never be able to truly forget him…’
“ I should get going.” Kagome turned around and left the tree. Sadness engulfed her whole being as she tried to steady herself walking back to the village. She had no idea what awaited her the next day…
