One Moment

Miroku was half-asleep, the late-afternoon sun warm on his closed eyelids, when the voice he loved best in the world snaked into his consciousness.

“Houshi-sama, I need you.” Slightly hesitant, with a rough edge that somehow emphasized its sweetness, Sango called from behind the half-closed door of Kaede's storage shed.

“I'm coming, Sango.” My love, he added silently. As the void in his hand widened, it seemed to be bringing all of his feelings closer to the surface. Every moment, no matter how uneventful, seemed incalculably precious.

Especially these. As he entered the shed, he was treated to a rear view of Sango balanced precariously on a box, muscles straining as she attempted to place a stack of wood on a high shelf. Sunlight streamed through the window, painting her dark hair with streaks of gold.

Sango's voice was breathless with effort as she called, “Please hold me so I don't fall.” He was behind her in an instant, encircling her supple waist with his hands and steadying her so that she could complete her task.

“There!” She pushed the last piece of wood into place and turned to face him with a smile of triumph. Her expression softened at the look of longing in his eyes, and she leaned forward to rest her forehead against his.

“Please always be there to hold me, houshi,” she whispered.

“My love, I will,” he replied.
