CHAPTER 2: FIRST DAY PART I

"Get up you lazy bag of bones!" Miroku was about ready to kick the damn hanyou out of bed. Akiko had invited him in, saying he was still getting ready. When Miroku walked into Inuyasha's huge room, he found him sprawled over the king sized bed, snoring loudly. Irritated, Miroku tried waking him for the past five minutes. Fed up, Miroku climbed on the bed stood up and pushed Inuyasha off the bed with his foot.

"ow!! Crap…" Inuyasha moaned and rolled over holding a hand to his injured forehead.

"It's about time you little shit. You have five minutes to get dressed, throw on a hat, get your bag, and catch the bus." Miroku ordered him from the bed.

Inuyasha eyes snapped open, "oh shit!" he jumped off the floor in his boxers and ran to his walk in closet. He threw on a red shirt, jeans, socks and sneakers. He scooped up his bag, a red hat, and his wallet and rushed out the door. They raced out the door, and down the lane to the gate. He just managed to open the gate when the big yellow bus stopped on front of his house. From his window, Sesshomaru shook his head and sipped some coffee.

Miroku and Inuyasha took the seats in back and sat down panting slightly. Inuyasha fixed his hat only to have the back of his head smacked.

"You really gotta stop doing this," Miroku stated. They looked at each other, and then laughed.

Kagome got off the bench at the bus stop when Sango tugged her sleeve.

"Here comes the bus," Sango told her.

"Wow, I would have never have guessed that that huge yellow vehicle was the bus," Kagome said sarcastically, not at her best in the mornings. Sango scowled at her. The bus stopped and they got on. Sango looked around.

"Huh, he's not here," Sango said surprised.

"Who?"

"Miroku. Usually every school day he's on the bus ready to grope me or something. Must have finally gotten the message."

Kagome doubted her friend's liability as they sat. If Sango didn't like it, why did she notice when he wasn't here? Kagome gave her a dubious look, "Right."

Twenty minutes, and many stops later, the bus pulled in front of a huge brown brick building with "Edo Ps. 138 High School" in silver over the front door. Kids were rolling out of buses and herding into the building over a walkway that fanned out in front, and narrowed to the door. Kagome took a deep breath. She can do this; I mean how different was it from any other school?

"Come on!" Sango pulled her arm and dragged her through the crowd. "Don't want to lose you in the madness."

Sango led her down new corridors and hallways until they came upon the cafeteria, with white tiled floor, light blue walls, and olds tables everywhere. Kids were all over, sitting on tables, benches, standing, and all talking at once. Some were greeting friends and others talking about their summer vacation.

Sango stretched her neck looking. "Where…? Ah! There she is. Miru!"

Sango waved and a girl with mouse brown hair turned her way. The girl smiled wide, "Sango!"

They pushed and shoved their way towards each other, Sango still dragging Kagome. The girls met up and Sango and Miru greeted each other. "Oh Miru? This is Kagome, the one I told you about, my best friend in the whole world. Kagome, this is Miru, a friend."

"Just a friend? Hi, Kagome nice to meet you." Her blue eyes went wide, "oh my god Sango you know who she looks like? Kikyou."

"Ah! Don't say her name in my presence!" Sango cringed dramatically.

"Who's kikyou?" Kagome asked.

"The most popular girl in school," Sango said heatedly, " her father owns a big business shipping company, so not only is she pretty, she's rich. Don't let that fool you; she's a classic example of `snobbery'. I wouldn't get involved with her." She turned to Miru and pulled her close to whisper, "Miru we've got a mission. We have to…"

Kagome waited patiently as they discussed…whatever. She surveyed the room, watching how all the kids seemed comfortable and familiar with each other. She was going to be a part of that. The loud speaker squeaked to life.

"Good morning ladies and gentle men and welcome to another year at Ps. 138. This is principal Sakaki welcoming you back. If you'll all take out your schedules that you got in the mail over the summer, start walking to your homeroom class. Thank you."

There was some ruffling and people started comparing schedules as they headed out the doors. Kagome got out hers and compared with Sango.

"Let's see," Sango scanned the papers, "oh this is great! You have all your classes with me! Fantastic, now I can show you around. How bout you Miru? Ummm…. we have biology together, and math, and Literature class! Cool! Come on guys lets go."

Inuyasha compared his schedule with Miroku's. "It looks like we have homeroom, Literature, history, PE, computers, and drama class together. Not bad."

"No not really. Come on Inuyasha, this is the year I teach you how to swoon a woman." Miroku put on his confident flirtatious face.

Inuyasha snorted, "No thanks, I don't want to end up battered and bruised."

They headed for the doors, but Inuyasha paused. Something had caught his nose. Something familiar. He searched the heads of the crowd. There! Who was that? He caught sight of familiar raven black hair before it disappeared out in the halls. Could it be?

"What's up Inuyasha? You're not nervous are you?" Miroku smiled mockingly.

Inuyasha snorted again, "whatever."

"Come on," Miroku beckoned him, "we'll take the short cut and get out of this mess."

Inuyasha nodded. But he sent one last glance back as he went out the other doors on the other side of the cafeteria. Maybe, just maybe…

Sango and Kagome went up a flight of stairs and down two hallways. Sango was looking for their homeroom, Kagome was trying to remember which way they went in case she needed to.

"It should be…" Sango smiled as she spotted the room number, "here it is, room 328, homeroom." She paused outside the room window, peeking in, "please don't let him be in here…oh crap! He is!" Sango stomped her foot and cursed. How was it every year they had homeroom together?

"Let me guess, Miroku?" Kagome smirked.

"Who else could it be?" Sango gave her a dirty look. "Come on. If I have to face another year with him, I'll go prepared."

Inside, Miroku and Inuyasha sat towards the back of the room. Miroku was talking to some boys, and Inuyasha was catching up on the sleep Miroku interrupted this morning. He leaned back in his chair, perfectly balanced on the back legs, cap pulled down. He was snoring just slightly, but it couldn't be heard over the class. Miroku noticed immediately when Sango walked in. this was the year he'd get her, no matter what.

Ms. Akido, the Literature and their homeroom teacher, had been chatting with some students when she noticed Sango walk in. she was suppose to bring the new student. She rushed right up to Sango, causing her to bump into Kagome. Sango sent a sorry over her shoulder.

"Sango! Is the new student with you?" Sango nodded, "please tell her to wait out there."

Sango turned to Kagome, "she said stay out here."

"Why?"

"I don't know," Sango shrugged, "probably wants to `introduce' you or something."

While Kagome waited in the hall, Sango strode into the room. Miroku saw her, and put on his most flattering face, knowing it would have no effect on her. Sango sent him a disgusted glare. She took the desk behind the boys, sitting poker straight in her chair as she put away her bag. Miroku turned around and put on a charming smile. "So? There's a new student? Who is it?"

Sango glared draggers at him, stabbing him in her mind. "She happens to be my best friend, so if you even try to lay a finger on her I swear-"

"She?" Miroku smiled wider, "really? Is she pretty?"

"She won't be once your eyes are black and blue," she threatened.

"All right! Settle down! SIT DOWN!" ms. Akido yelled. Much more calmly, "okay ladies and gentlemen, we have a new student joining us this year. She just transferred over from Dojima's school for girls, and since we all remember our first day of new school, please make her feel welcome." She heard a soft rumble. She looked over to find a sleeping Inuyasha sanosuke and rolled her eyes. Looks like he was getting a head start. "Houshi-kun, please wake up you friend or it looks bad for both of you."

Miroku shoved his elbow into Inuyasha, careful not to knock him over. "Wake up sleeping beauty, there's a new girl in school."

Inuyasha only groaned and mumbled. Now that he was awake, he didn't want to show it. He had a reputation to protect. Besides what did he care if there was a new student? They're all the same. Too preppy and eager to make friends.

Ms. Akido rolled her eyes again. Forget it. She went to the door and stuck her head out. "Come in dear." Miroku whistled slightly, making Sango's hackles stand up, as a shy Kagome walked in head down. "People, this is…I'm sorry dear what was your name?"

Inuyasha wasn't really listening, but then an all too familiar scent hooked his nose. Then,

"my name's Kagome, Kagome Higurashi." His eyes went wide and he went to sit up, but just then, his center of balance gave out to gravity. His chair went flying out from under him, making him fall and whack his head on the floor. His grabbed his head painfully and hissed.

Ms. Akido sent him a frown. "How many times have I told you Mr. Sanosuke? Don't lean back in your chair. Now looked what happened."

Sanosuke? Could it be? Kagome stretched her neck towards the back of the room. She had to see. Miroku was laughing hysterically. A hand slapped on the desk and lifted the boy up. A white head popped up, red hat crushed under the other hand, and rested his chin on the desk, grimacing in pain. Oh my god…it was him. She looked at Sango, who only gave her an innocent look. Sango had known! Little wench. When she glanced back at Inuyasha, he was staring straight at her, surprise bright in his eyes. Pink tinted her cheeks as she continued eye contact with him. Miroku didn't miss it.

"Dude, is this the one? The one you told me about?" Miroku grinned as Inuyasha nodded. Oh, this was going to be interesting.

Kagome walked down the center of the desks, head slightly turned away shy like. Many of the boys in the class took the time to notice how her hips moved in a nice way in the jean kapris she wore. But Inuyasha only had eyes for her face. He corrected his chair and turned around as she took her seat next to Sango. Kagome sat down and gave Sango an evil stare. Sango only smiled.

"I am so going to get you for this," Kagome whispered. Sango giggled.

When Miroku saw that Inuyasha wasn't going to stop staring anytime soon, he smacked Inuyasha on the arm. The hanyou jumped slightly and looked at him.

"Give the girl her face back. Damn," he whispered. Inuyasha blushed and rested his head in his arms.

"Okay," ms. Akido announced, "if you'll take out your schedules you'll notice some changes. Your classes have been spilt into two days, an A and a B day. Today's an A day. You have four, eighty minutes classes (groans) a day, plus lunch. Homeroom is only ten minutes, enough time for role call and attendance. Please go to your next class after this. You only have a few more minutes here. Understand?"

The whole class moaned, "Yes ms. Akido."

The students automatically went back to talking, getting in as much as they could. Miroku turned and gave Sango and Kagome a charming smile, again to no effect.

"Hello ladies. So what classes do I have the honor of taking with you?"

"Oh stuff it Miroku," Sango said as she pulled out her schedule, "hopefully I have none with you, then neither would Kagome."

"Then there'd be no point in living if I go without you," Miroku leaned close only to have his face shoved back playfully. Kagome noticed Sango's small smile. Kagome gave the boy a considering look. Miroku had dark brown hair, which was just short enough to be put in a small ponytail in back. His dark blue eyes looked almost violet, making his face very flattering. Kagome smiled as possibilities ranked her mind. Maybe he would be good for Sango, since she was a control freak and he obviously needed to be kept in line. And Sango didn't seem to mind him all that much. She might not like perverts, but they were still friends. Miroku grabbed Inuyasha's schedule and laid them out on the desk. He studied them closely.

"Well, lets see here…I have…history, Literature, language, and drama with you guys. Inuyasha has ::smile:: biology, math, history, Literature, drama, and language. Wow that's like half your classes. Well, just gives him more time."

"For what?" Inuyasha growled.

"Oh, nothing, just thinking out loud." Miroku grinned.

Kagome kept looking at Inuyasha. He kept his head rested on the desk. Why didn't he say hi? Was she really that bad to see again? She leaned over, annoyed, and tapped him on the back.

"Hello to you again too," she quipped.

He leaned back slowly till he saw her upside down, resting his head on the back of his chair. He gave her a tight smile, careful not to show his fangs. "Hello, nice to see you. How's Shippou?"

"How does he know about Shippou?" Sango interrupted.

"Shippou was the reason we met," Kagome explained, "and he's doing fine, considering my mom wants to kill him. He got out again last night and my mom spent two hours looking for him."

"Is that what all that crashing was last night?" Kagome and Sango laughed, a common joke shared between them.

Inuyasha relaxed, his smile becoming genuine. She had a nice laugh. Girl like, but deeper, richer. He really liked it.

The bell rang, a piercing kind of fire trill type that students waited to ring at the end of every day. Chairs scraped on the floor as students got up and gathered their stuff. They slowly made their way to the hall, where Kagome looked back and waved. "See you in bio!"

Inuyasha waved after her in a friendly way, but the gesture made no difference to Miroku. He shook his head and smiled.

"You have got it bad," he said softly, forgetting Inuyasha's great hearing.

"What have I got?"

Miroku only laughed, "nothing. We have to get to the gym."

The boys walked down the hallway, comfortable with their friendly silence. They didn't notice the different but familiar eyes watch them go. She had seen the wave the girl had given Inuyasha, and how he waved back. Well, she'll just have to lay down the rules for the little wench. Kikyou held herself stiff as she headed to biology, her flunkies faithfully following.
