CHAPTER 16: COMFORTING
Inuyasha came thundering down the stairs, surprising Akiko.
"Akiko, are any of the cars available?" Inuyasha rushed, and desperate look in his eyes.
Akiko backed up a bit, "I think. Inuyasha what's going on?"
"I have to get to the Shikon-" a loud blaring was heard outside. Inuyasha opened the door find Miroku's silver Mercedes Benz outside the gate. He was leaning heavy on the horn. She stopped and stuck his head out.
"Get in the damn car Inuyasha!" he nodded and sped out the door.
Akiko gasped and held out a hand to the retreating back of Inuyasha, "wait! What's…happening?"
But Inuyasha didn't hear, as he tried to squeeze his way out of the barely open gates. He swung around the front and jerked the passenger door opened and closed it with a slam. Miroku slammed the gas and the tires screeched to life. They sped down the highway way past speed limit. Horns blared at them butt he paid no heed.
Inuyasha was practically jumping in his seat, growling. "I swear to god, I'm going to kill that mother fucker. How did you know?"
Miroku kept his eyes on the blurry road, and grit his teeth. "Sango called right after she called you. She said she called Kagome's house but no one answered, so she left a message." His eyes snapped with anger and he hit the steering wheel with his palm. "Mother of fucking god!"
Inuyasha felt the sentiment, "I'm gonna kill, I'm gonna fucking kill the bastard. I'm gonna rip him limb form limb."
"Save me a body part," Miroku ground out.
It was like the heavens were on their side, since no police pulled them for speeding and they managed to make it to the spa unharmed. Almost breaking the window glass, Inuyasha slammed the car door shut. Miroku got out in the same manner. They could see the police cars out front, attracting a crowd of people. They reached the front doors just as a dazed Hojo was being brought out in handcuffs. Inuyasha snarled and leaped at the boy. Hojo saw him and flinched back. Two police that were keeping the crowd at bay saw him too, and caught him by the arms just as he was about to reach Hojo. Inuyasha struggled and thrashed, and out of the corner of his eye, he saw Miroku struggling against another cop, he eyes focused coldly on Hojo. When Hojo was close enough to hear,
"If you ever go near her again, I will kill you with the greatest of pleasures."
Hojo blanched and quickly ducked his head into the squad car. It pulled away with a couple blasts of the sirens. Inuyasha stopped struggling as it distanced away from him, giving the backseat glares that would have Satan himself cowering. Growling, he tore his arms from the police, giving them withering glares, and waited for Miroku to catch up. They stalked into the spa, fuming.
An officer saw them and held up his hands, "sorry guys, you can't come in."
Inuyasha bared his fangs, "damn right I'm coming in, that's my girlfriend in there."
"And mine's in there too," Miroku stepped up next to him.
An officer writing down on a pad looked up at their mention and put his hand on his fellows shoulder. "let'em go, the kid said he would be coming."
The stopper gave one last glance before stepping aside. "Down the hall to the right."
Inuyasha gave him a nod and streaked past him. He couldn't believe this! Is the whole fucking world against their happiness? Inuyasha turned the corner with Miroku and stopped. His face softened, a pained look entering his eyes. There she was, dressed again and curled under a blanket, staring at a now cold cup of tea. Sango was on her left, leaning on her shoulder and rubbing her back, while a red headed she-wolf was on her right, holding her hand for comfort. Kouga leaned on the wall next to them, keeping an eye out in his anxiety. Inuyasha's heart clenched. She looked so pale, so lost, and he could barely see her hands shaking. He sucked in his breath. He actually wanted to cry.
"Kagome?" he said softly, all eyes turning towards him. She looked up, and bit her lip. Her eyes shone with hurt and shame. His eyes went wide and he quickly went to her side, Sango giving up her spot to be with Miroku. The wolf girl got up too to stand next to Kouga, grabbing the cold tea from Kagome's hands. Inuyasha sat down in the chair, and gently laid his hands down on her hitching shoulders. He pulled her into a warm embrace and she rested her hands on his chest. When the sobs came, he quickly pulled her into his lap and held on for dear life, rocking her back and forth. He couldn't feel the wetness of her silent tears soaking to his skin.
The others looked down at their feet at the scene. Miroku hugged Sango as her own tears started falling. Kouga put a comforting arm around Ayame as a few tears spilled. When he looked back, Inuyasha was staring up at him with glazed eyes. `Thank you'. Kouga acknowledged it with a nod.
"Ma'am, please calm down--ma'am!" they heard down the hall.
"I will not calm down! Where's my daughter! Kagome!" Kagome's head popped up at the sound of her mother's voice. Mrs. Higurashi came around the corner a wreck eyes going everywhere.
"Mama?" Kagome gasped. Her mother's eyes found her and she cried out. She sped over to where her daughter lay in Inuyasha's lap, arms held out. She kneeled and scooped her daughter into a crushing hug, sobs making themselves known through out the building.
"Oh, my baby, my little girl…oh my god…my poor baby!" Mama held her tighter and rocked back and forth, smoothing her hair down as Kagome shook in her arms. She sniffled and looked up. "Who was it? Who did this?"
"Hojo," Sango ground out through gritted teeth. Mama gasped.
"Why? He was such a nice boy. Oh my poor Kagome. Which one of you stopped him?"
Kouga held up his hand, "I did."
Mama cried out and let go her daughter. She got up and pulled Kouga into a bone-crunching hug, making him blush. "Thank you! Thank you so much for helping my daughter!"
Kouga patted her back uncertainly, "un…Mrs. Higurashi? Uh…I cant breath…"
"Oh! I'm so sorry honey," she gave a watery laugh and let go. Kouga took one good breathe before giving her a reassuring smile. Next to him, Ayame hide her smile behind her hand. She kneeled back down to Kagome, framing her face with her hands and smoothing her hair.
"Do you want to go home? Are they finished with you?"
"Yeah, I gave a statement," Kagome sighed, "but can I go with Inuyasha? I don't want to face Ojii-chan and Souta yet."
Her mother smiled at her warmly, "of course." She looked up Inuyasha, "take care of her?"
He only nodded and got up. He offered his hand to Kagome, who took it, and they walked out with his arm around her shoulders. Miroku and Sango followed them to the parking lot, taking the front seats so Inuyasha and Kagome could have the back. It was silent on the way to Inuyasha's house. Miroku dropped them off, Sango giving Kagome one last hug before she got in and they drove off. It was silent as they walked up the driveway, into the house where a nervous Akiko was twisting a towel in her hands. When the door opened, she went to say something, but saw Kagome's paleness and snapped it shut. She just watched them head upstairs to Inuyasha's room. `What happened?'
Inuyasha opened the door for her, and she stepped in with her arms around herself. Almost blindly, she walked over to Inuyasha's bed and sat on the edge stiffly. He sat next to her and grabbed a hand gently, rubbing his thumb over her fingers. They sat that way for a while, comforting each other. Then she leaned onto his shoulder.
"Hold me," it was a desperate plea, whispered so she wouldn't break down. She followed suit as he pulled her into his strong arms and lay down on his side, spooning her. He pushed her hair aside with his nose and leaned his head on her shoulder. He wrapped his arms around her stomach, and she quickly clasped to them, wanting to make sure he was still there. Wanting to make sure he wouldn't leave. They fell asleep that way together. Akiko only checked on them once, before leaving them alone.
When Sesshoumaru came home that night, he immediately felt the tense air, and noticed the unearthly quite.
