InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Drama of Edo High: A Modern Tale ❯ Merry Christmas! ( Chapter 23 )
CHPATER 23: MERRY CHRISTMAS
Sango walked up the walkway to Kagome's porch, her feet kicking new snow that was fluttering to the ground. She smiled at the sky. It was perfect. She always wondered if it would snow on Christmas. She banged her boots on the porch and knocked. Suddenly it was yanked open, and a grinning Kagome looked out at her. Before she could say a word, Sango was grabbed by the wrist and dragged through the house, up the stairs and into Kagome's room, where Kagome shut and lock the door.
Sango spun around to face her beaming friend, "Kagome! What are you doing, we have to get to Inuyasha's!"
But Kagome grabbed her by the shoulders and held tight. "All right spill it. I want every tantalizing, passionate, lip locking, excoriating detail. Now."
Sango blinked at her, lip pulled up and one brow rose. "What the hell are you talking about?"
Kagome rolled her eyes, "come on! Don't think we didn't notice when you and Miroku left. And I seem to remember a very personal conversation we had the other day. So tell!"
Sango blinked. Then blushed. She pulled away, "Kagome! Your just as bad as he is!"
"And I love it!" she grinned, "now tell me!"
Sango smacked her arm and blushed more, "nothing happened you moron!"
Kagome giggled, "sure-, and I suppose you guys just went for a bite to eat then?"
"Ugh, your gross," Sango gave her a glare, "okay! Fine, so we did do something, but it's not what you think! At least, it started out that way…"
Kagome squealed and led Sango to her bed, "tell me tell me!"
Sango only rolled her eyes and told what happened. When she got to Miroku confession, Kagome sighed and fluttered her lashes dreamily. When Sango was done, Kagome pounced on her, giving her a huge bear hug. Sango screamed and tried to escape, but Kagome finally released her.
"Oh my god! That is so cute!" Kagome squealed, "I'm giving him a hug when I see him!"
"Na uh! That's my job! Beside we have to leave. I think your family already left."
"They did?" Kagome got up and raced downstairs. She gasped when she saw no one around. "Oh no! We have to get there fast! My mom's probably torturing Inuyasha with talk of wedding dresses and receptions!"
"What?" Sango paused, then gasped, "oh my god! When Kagome?"
Kagome turned back around slowly, facing her friend. Before Sango knew it, her head was being mooched (ground) into her neck, "no you baka! It's not what you think! But my mom got it into her head that little grandchildren will be running around soon."
Sango giggle das her head was released and they gathered coats. "Gee, I wonder what gave her that idea?"
She ducked as Kagome swiped at her. Kagome paused at the kitchen and grabbed the Honda keys. They must have taken the bus. The girls loaded into the car and pulled away. It was quiet on the way there, comfortable silence filling the car. Kagome was giddy. She was o lucky! After thanksgiving, Inuyasha had invited them to Christmas at his house. Of course, Kagome accepted before actually telling her mom, but some whining and fake tears later, things were just fine. But she could understand why Inuyasha had invited them. Though beautiful, his house was really empty and really lonely. And the only family he had was more than not gone more than home. She sighed as she remembered when Inuyasha had told her Sesshomaru was leaving around Christmas for business. She thought he would at least stay for one important holiday. Her heartstrings tugged, Kagome had given in like that. Besides, it shouldn't be all that bad. Sango and Miroku were invited too, and he even offered to Sango's family if they wanted to. Though there was no concrete evidence that they'd make it. But Christmas at Inuyasha's giant mansion would prove interesting. One reason because there was plenty of places to hide.
"Do you realize, that year after year, Kohaku wakes us up earlier every time?" Sango cut in her thoughts.
Kagome rolled her eyes as she turned off the exit, "oh boy. So what time was it this year?"
Sango paused, extending the dramatic effect, "five…in the morning."
Kagome barked a laugh, "I would have killed Souta with great pleasure."
"Oh I got him back," Sango grinned smugly, "cause you see, I locked him in the hall closet for the next forty five minutes, which by then, his yells and banging woke the
whole house. After that, all that I got was that I had to open my presents last."
"Oh, what did you get?"
"Just some clothes, a couple CDs I wanted badly, thank you by the way, and money. Same old same old. Oh but Rin made me this really cute charm bracelet! Here."
Sango held out her sleeveless arm and Kagome glanced at it. "Aw!" it was one of those bead bracelets that kids love to make, with the letter beads. But Rin spelled out "#1 (bead) sis (bead) in (bead) the (bead) world!". It was multicolored, ranging form hot pink to deep blue.
"Oh my god Sango! That is so freakin' cute!"
"I know," Sango smile and hugged her wrist.
Kagome giggled as they pulled into Inuyasha's driveway, black iron gates squeaking close behind them. She pulled up to the house, and saw Miroku's Mercedes. Man, his parents were very lenient with that car. They snuggled in coats as they opened the doors and walked into the warm, homey entrance hall. Mikogi, the hired help, came up and smiled as she took their coats. They looked at each other and shrugged. They were about to turn towards to the sitting room when they heard footsteps. Kagome turned and gaped.
"Sesshomaru?", Kagome asked as the man came form the kitchen with two glasses of wine in his hand. He was dressed down in gray slacks and white turtle neck sweater, his glorious mane swept into a low ponytail. His gold eyes softened as they lay on Kagome and Sango.
"Surprised to see me?"
"Well, yeah…I mean, didn't you have business?"
He shrugged, "cancelled it. Thought I needed time off anyways. I can do that, being the owner of my company. Come on, everyone's in the sitting room."
He passed them, and they exchanged glances before following. They entered and were greeted by familiar sounds. On the love seat, Miroku and Inuyasha were in heated argument about something, while her mom and grandfather were chatting comfortabely. Souta sat on the luscious carpet pouting, sending dangerous glares at his mother. But he cheered up instantly when they walked in, and tugged on his mother.
"All right they're here! Can I go now?"
Her mother frowned at him but got up instead to greet the girls. " About time Kagome. We couldn't open presents without you."
"Hey!" Souta protested, "You never said we'd open presents!"
"Well now you know," Kagome, grumbled, "twerp. Be right back, I forgot mine are in the trunk."
Kagome left quickly, and Sango joined her friends. Sesshomaru joined Mrs. Higurashi and Jii-chan, handing one glass of wine to her mother, and Souta went back to pouting on the floor. Kagome came back minutes later with an arm full of boxes. Souta jumped back up.
"Okay she's back, can we open them now?"
"Jeez kid, keep your pants on," Inuyasha remarked as he got up and helped Kagome set the boxes down with the others.
Sesshomaru raised a brow, "I seem to remember a certain someone jump up and down when he was young."
Inuyasha blushed and mumbled under his breath. Sesshomaru smirked, "now, now, don't get testy with your brother."
"Yeah yeah that's all fine and dandy," Souta chirped, "now come on!"
The teens groaned and the adults just smiled. His mother nodded, and Souta pounced on the pile. He sifted through them, only picking out his. By the time he was down, he had a nice stash.
"Souta, slow down! Do you want to pass out?" Kagome said. He just sniffed at her.
He picked up Kagome's gift first and tore through it. His face beamed as he laid eyes the latest Final Fantasy game, and gave her a quick hug.
"Thanks Onee-chan!"
"Glad to hear it, now open Inuyasha's, it goes with mine."
Souta quickly found Inuyasha's and tore through that. "Yes!" he jumped up, "it's a headset and online connector for the PS2! Thanks Inu-nii-chan!"
"No pro-" but Inuyasha was quickly winded when Souta plowed into him. He felt like a fleet train hit him. When Souta got up, he beamed down at Inuyasha, but then crossed his brows. Inuyasha looked up at him confused. "What?"
"What are those?" Souta reached down and grabbed one of Inuyasha's ears, that were exposed when Souta tackled him. Inuyasha gasped with Kagome as he pulled away and tried to pull his hat back on. Souta frowned.
"What are you doing? I just want to see!" Inuyasha pulled away form his grabbing hands.
"Souta!" his mother hissed, " don't be rude."
Inuyasha quirked his brow, and Kagome stared at her mother. Her mother stared back, looking from each confused teenager. "What? Of course I knew! Do you think you could hide them while rubbing them up in your room? Come on Kagome, I'm your mother, do you really think I would get myself caught if I caught you?"
Sango and Miroku were stifling giggles, Kagome and Inuyasha looked anywhere but each other blushing like no tomorrow, and Sesshomaru just shot his brows up. Jii-chan gave the couple a glare but minded his business.
Souta scrunched his nose up, "mom! TMI!"
His mom just shrugged, "open the rest honey."
And Souta proceeded in throwing paper and wrappings all over in his crusade. He got a few more games thanks to his mom and Jii-chan, and relatives had sent money, which of course would go to games. So basically, games, games, and more games.
Souta did a happy little dance, "this is awesome! I can't wait to play them."
"Why don't you?" the demon spoke and jerked a thumb down the hall, "I know Inuyasha made some improvements to the entertainment center, so you can play now."
Souta looked up at the demon with adoring eyes, "can I really?"
"Sure, this way," Sesshomaru led the boy away, Souta grinning like a fool.
Inuyasha watched him go, "well, that's different. But of course I wouldn't know, he's hardly ever here."
"Oh stop, he's home and that's enough I'm sure," Kagome nudged closer, "besides its our turn."
"Gladly," Miroku leaned close and sifted through the gifts. He pulled out a big one, looked at the tag and gave it to Kagome's mom. "From Kagome."
"Oh," Mama cooed, "I wonder what it is…oh sweet heart! Thank you! Its beautiful!"
Kagome laughed as she received a great big hug for her deep red velvet gift. She picked up another, "this is for you Jii-chan."
"Really?" he bent and took it, pulling the ribbon, " what could it be?" he opened the box and smiled, "you always seem to know what I need. Thank you Kagome, this will come in very handy."
Kagome beamed, then searched again. "Okay, our turn. Sango, here. Miroku. Oh, me, goody. And Inuyasha." By the time she was done, Miroku had two, Sango two, Kagome three, and Inuyasha two.
"Let me go first," Sango piped and opened the blue one first, the one from Kagome. She gasped and hugged her best friend. "Thank you! I always wanted this!"
"What?" Miroku asked as he tried to look.
"She got me Candies, the perfume I wanted."
"Hm," Miroku smiled and leaned close to her girlfriend, "so you'll be more enticing than normal?"
"Stop!" Sango giggled as he pecked her cheek, "I have to open your's. Oh Miroku, its too beautiful to open!"
"Ah, go ahead," Inuyasha grinned, "its better on the inside."
Sango pouted and gave a quick lose to the beautifully golden wrapped box. It was a shame to ruin, but greediness called. Still mindful of the wrapping and nice ribbon, she pulled out a dark green velvet box. She cooed and raised a brow at her man, earning her a grin and cuddle. She opened the jeweler's box. And froze.
"Oh my god…Miroku…its beautiful," Sango breathed as she pulled out the tennis bracelet, carat golden plague engraved what seemed magically with her name. Miroku rested his chin on her shoulder as she turned it over, and held a hand over her quivering lip. It read "Always With Love, Miroku."
" I love it, thank you," Sango let a few tears fall as she was gathered into Miroku's arms. Kagome and Inuyasha smiled warmly at each other, and Kagome's mother sighed, remembering the days of her romance. Ah young love. They broke apart, and Miroku took and secured the bracelet around a sniffling Sango's wrist, the opposite of Rin's.
"Okay, enough with the cuteness," Kagome held up one of Miroku's, " your turn."
"My my, what could it be? Oh no," Miroku groaned as Inuyasha bit his lip, "it's from inlays." He opened it, stared at it and tucked his tongue in his cheek. He looked up at a giggling Inuyasha. "Thanks, just what I always wanted."
"I'm surprised you don't have it already!" Inuyasha laughed.
"What is it?" Sango looked over, blushed and glared at Inuyasha. "That's not funny!"
"What?" Kagome got a look and burst into giggles. "He got you the Kama Sutra?!"
"Inuyasha!" Kagome's mother threw a pillow at her hopeful new son in law. He laughed and blocked the sofa cushion.
"You are one kinky freak," Miroku said as he shoved a gift at Inuyasha, "here, your turn."
Inuyasha took the gift and ripped through the wrapping.
"What did I miss?" Sesshomaru asked as he came in wine glass in hand. Man, that kid could ask more questions than a squad of reporters.
"Oh nothing much," Kagome's mother stated, "just that these kids have more active imaginations than I thought."
"Yeah we'll see how active Miroku's is," Inuyasha mumbled ash he went through the box. He opened it and looked down. He bit his lip and tired not to snort. He looked away and rubbed a hand over his eyes, trying hard not to laugh as he did.
"What? What did he get you?" Kagome smiled. Inuyasha let out a sigh and reached in the box. He pulled out a dark red dog collar, with silver spikes all around. Sesshomaru started dying, and Sango fell over busting a gut, while Miroku sat trying to stifle his chuckles. Kagome bit her lip and hung her head in her cross-legged lap, while her mother just sighed, shaking her head.
"My god Miroku, I didn't know you were that kinky! Maybe you should have saved this for yourself." Inuyasha busted out laughing.
"I was thinking maybe Kagome could use it!" Miroku ducked as a pillow went flying by his head. He cringed laughing as Kagome got up and punched him in the arm and sat back down.
"Friggin' kinky pervert," she grumbled as she sat.
"Who knows, may be you will," Sango waggled her eyes brows, and dodged as Kagome swiped at her for the second time that day.
"All right! That's enough. Damn you kids are so weird. Anyways, open your other one Inuyasha," Sesshomaru suggested. Inuyasha nodded, wiping a tear away, and picked up the dark blue one.
It was small, and when the paper was gone, it said on the white box "to Inuyasha, love Kagome". He raised a brow at her and she smiled. "Don't worry, I think it'll be better than Miroku's."
He smirked and opened the box. He grinned, and picked up the chain. She had gotten him military dog tags, silver with engravings. He lifted one and looked at it. It said his name in plain text, and it was underlined with what looked like a claw scratch. He lifted the other and smiled. It was an engraving of a tribal dog, crouched and ready to pounce, with a single diamond for the eye. He quickly put it over his head, lifting his long white hair from the neck and laid it against his chest. He smiled softly and leaned over to Kagome.
She leaned to him and they gave a quick peck, "you like?"
"Very much."
"Dog tags huh?" Miroku rubbed his chin, "never would have thought of that."
"Of course you wouldn't," Sango grudged, "you're too busy thinking of ways to gross him out."
"Okay, its my turn," Kagome sat up and clapped excited. Which one first? Not a tough choice. One was from Sango, another from mother, and one from Inuyasha. She chose Sango. She opened the green wrapping, and melted at the sight. "Aw thank you Sango."
Sango gracefully took the hug, and flipped her hair. "You're very welcome, I did that all by myself."
"What?" Miroku asked. Kagome help up a wooden frame, and showed them the picture. It was them at the skating rink, coats and hats donned, smiling foolishly in the camera. Snowflakes had been placed around them, seeming like in the wind, but Kagome knew Sango did that with Adobe PhotoShop program on her computer, and printed the picture on photo paper. On the frame, "winter of 2004" was carved into the wood elegantly.
"That's nice Sango, you did that?" Inuyasha commented, and Sango nodded eagerly.
"Yes, I have a multi-talented girlfriend and proud of it," Miroku noblized the statement. Sango rolled her eyes at him.
"Okay, next one, from mom," Kagome lifted the surprisingly light box and tore through the paper. She giggled and clapped her hands happily as she laid eyes on the full box of chocolate flavored candy canes.
Inuyasha rolled his eyes, "is that all it takes?"
"For my mom to make me happy, yes. But you see they're chocolate flavored. There's a difference."
"I think for you you don't care," Sango giggled as her friend gave her a look.
"Anyways moving on. She still ahs to open mine." Inuyasha pushed the gift into Kagome's hands. She wriggled, and tore back the shiny silver paper. She laid eyes on a velvet rectangle box, the lip lined with a gold metal. "Did you get me a bracelet like…oh…my…"
Kagome's eyes went wide as she traced a hand over the delicate piece. It was a gold locket, with a thin gold chain, and it was tucked nicely into the sponge of the box, the front of the locket was smooth and the outside was traced with a line of diamonds, as small as pinheads. Her mouth hung open slightly and she gently opened the locket, marveling at the beauty. Her lip quivered as she saw the tiny picture inside. It was a thumbnail of the picture Sango took of them, the one where they were caught sleeping on Sango's couch, Kagome snuggled close as Inuyasha's arm hugged her protectively. On the other panel, he had an engraving put in, one that had her holding back tears. "I want to lay here 4ever." She closed it and turned to the back, where it had the year.
"Here," Inuyasha came up and took the necklace gently, unclasping the thing. Kagome lifted her hair, and her hand came up to trace the heart shaped locket as it slid against her collarbone. When she felt it drop on her neck, she quickly turned and hugged Inuyasha, sniffling as his arms wrapped around her warmly.
"Thank you so much. Its beautiful, I can't even…" she pulled back, and sniffed. He smiled at her tearful face, and kissed her cheek softly.
Off to the side, Kagome's mother was fanning herself, trying not to ruin the moment with her sobbing. She saw as Inuyasha loving caressed her daughter's cheek. Her baby was growing up, falling in love, and she was damn proud to see it. Sesshomaru handed her a tissue as a few tears fell. Sango and Miroku held hands tenderly, smiling happily at each other.
The doorbell range, snapping the enraptured couple to attention.
"Who could that be?" Sango said as she got up and went down the hall. Next thing the occupants heard, was a jolly "Merry Christmas!" as Sango's family burst through the door, bags of food in hand, Kohaku and Rin giggling as they ran in and hugged Sango tightly. Miroku grinned and got up, and Kagome's mother cheered and followed, bringing along a curious Sesshomaru. Inuyasha smiled and tugged her hand as he headed for the door.
"Come on!"
"I'll catch up," Kagome laughed, and pulled her hand away.
His brows crossed, "you okay?"
She smiled, "yeah I'm fine, I just want to collect myself before I show my face again."
He nodded and went on down the hall without, not able to wait for the party to start.
And there Kagome stood, in the middle Inuyasha's lavishly furnished home, lush carpets under her feet and warm heating chasing the chill of winter outside. She bit her lip and hugged herself, one hand clasping the locket. Her heart spread a nice warm glow through her veins, her blood humming. She had no doubt about it now.
"I love Inuyasha," she whispered to the room, with only the walls to hear.
