CHAPTER 34: ONE IN A MILLION

He had taken the bus, which he was sure was a mistake. The minute he walked on, the whole bus went quiet. Not even bothering to look for her, he just took a back seat and stared out the window the whole time. He could feel the stares and hear the whispers, but he ignored it. What did he care? He got off the bus and walked through the front doors of the school. He went to his locker, and went to his classes in the morning. But he didn't see them, didn't hear them, and didn't even want to know they were there. Everything was blank, was black, and that's how he saw it. Inuyasha and Kagome tried to strike up conversations, but after the third try, they let him go. Kagome worried greatly about him. He was a bit too down for her comfort. And ever since that little scene at his house…well, lets just say she had cause for concern. Inuyasha made sure to walk him from class to class, even if there was no talking. He didn't want Miroku to do anything crazy.

Kagome reported to him that Sango was the same way, but a little more lively. She took notes in class, paid attention, but she didn't talk to anyone. She ignored all comments directed at her about him, and had barely said two words to her all day. And they looked how they felt. Sango dressed in gray and black, baggy clothes hanging off of her. Miroku wasn't even sure if his clothes matched or were clean, he really didn't care. But all in all, the whole school knew the break up, and knew they were miserable.

Lunch came around, and though Miroku wasn't hungry, Kagome and Inuyasha dragged him along anyways. Even if it was just to stare at the table top until there were smoldering holes in it. Unknown to him, Sango was there too, staying with Miru and her friends. Miru had fluttered over her like a mother, concerned for her well being and questioned her endlessly. Sango ignored her mainly, but followed her like a lost child. And it was about this time, she was brought back to the real world.

Miru, who had been about to take a bite of her sandwich, looked up at the doors like normal, but froze. Her salami and Swiss sandwich fell from her hands. Two girls looked her way, and followed her gaze, one of them gasping. Miru just blinked shocked.

"Holy shit…" Tsume, right of Miru, breathed.

"Shit is right," Sacrika, next to Sango, commented. "Cause he looks like shit."

"No," Miru said, "he looks like hell."

Sango raised her head curiously, but didn't turn around, she had a feeling if she did, something would happen.

Tsume poked at her pasta, running a hand through her hair and glanced at Sango. Sango stared back, but Tsume avoided her gaze. She turned to Sacrika, but Sacrika quickly shoved a Twinkie in her mouth, looking everywhere but Sango. Miru was the only one who met her gaze.

"What?" Sango snapped.

Miru bit her lip and chewed it a second, picking up her sandwich again. She flicked her eyes away from Sango and back. "Um…I know I probably shouldn't say this, but…uh…turn around."

Brows crossing, Sango turned. And was met with the saddest sight she's ever seen. Miroku had walked in, and now sat with a jumpy Inuyasha and Kagome. And Miru was right, he looked like hell. His clothes were wrinkled, a dark dull black, and his hair was a messy ponytail. But he looked to not even care. And he was the palest she's ever seen, dark eyes hollow and lost. And he just stared at the table in front of him like it would give the answers of the universe. Sango quickly turned back around, and could feel the threat of tears burning her eyes. Oh god…Miroku. Miru grabbed her hand getting her attention. Miru looked into her pained glazed eyes, and squeezed her hand. But her attention was brought back to Miroku and she hung her mouth open.

"She's not going to…"

Sango turned his way again, and anger boiled in her veins. It was the bitch, the one who started this. And she walked uncertainly up to him, and tapped his shoulder. He blinked, and turned her way, and Sango for the first time, saw instant anger kindle in his eyes.

Koharu gulped, "Miroku, I-I just want to talk-"

Miroku shot up from his seat and started walking out. Koharu grabbed his arm. "Please Miroku, I just want-"

He whirled on her dangerously, jabbing a finger in her face. The whole cafeteria went quiet. "Stay away from me bitch, I thought I told you never to come near me again. Why should I talk to you? You ruined my life and nothing you do will fix that!"

And with that Miroku stormed out of the room, leaving it quiet and still and Koharu ashamed of herself. A banging was heard on the other side of the room, and a few turned to see the other doors swing on their hinges. But Miru and her friends were the only ones who knew that it was Sango who left, tears streaking down her face and cheeks flushed. What else could go wrong? But on the other side of the building, walking in the opposite direction, was a fuming Miroku. While Sango found a bathroom to cry, he was punching lockers at random points, making a few dents. And with one good blow, he bashed a locker making it pop open, and he slammed it shut.

That fucking slut! How dare she even show her face to him. Even try to talk to him? It was her fault this happened, and she wanted to talk? Was she insane or just retarded? God! He needed something to hurt right now. And what he said was true. Nothing she did could fix it, because the love of his life hadn't even trusted him enough to let him explain. He knew from the beginning he didn't deserve that trust, but she had given him some, and that was enough. But not to have all of it? That's what hurt him most. Miroku slid down the lockers to sit and lean his head down. By the merciful heavens he missed Sango. All those cold nights, with neither a blanket nor thought to warm him. There was only thing that could do that, and she hated him right now. But did she really? Kagome had said she was just as miserable, just as tired of it. God he was so tired of it, so tired of this shit. He lifted his head. So why doesn't he do something about it? Why was he just sitting there, feeling sorry for himself? There was a girl out there he wanted, and being Miroku, he'd find a way. Except this time, much more was at stake.

Miroku got up, and went in search of a friend. A plan was formulating, and he be damned if he would give up. If Sango doubted his love, then he'd prove her wrong. He'd let her know, he'd let the whole population know. Just for her.

Sango came in the next day a bit calmer. That scene yesterday had really gotten to her. Not only did it upset her, but it angered her. How dare the stupid slut try and talk to him! Sango was about ready to take her and drag her down the hallway, but when Miroku said what he said, it broke her. It really had. Even after all this time, he was still hung on her. She thought he'd mope a while, than go back to his playboy bad ass self. But no, when she saw him sitting at that table, all her knowledge of him flew out the window.

"You ruined my life and nothing you do will fix that!"

Had he really meant that? Every word? He must have, cause he didn't even know she was there, he hadn't seen her yet, and yet he still said those things. But had he really meant it? Sango shook her head. Too many doubts had started the relationship, and now they were coming back to her. She just needed to let go, no matter how hard it was. That's what was best.

Then how come she felt like weeping just thinking about it?

The bell rang, snapping her back, and she noticed Kagome had come to sit with her. Going back to doodling on her notebook, Sango noticed that her notebook was covered in question marks. She shook her head again, and put it away. This was really getting to her. The PA system beeped to life, and students stopped to listen to morning announcements. Some rustling was heard, whispering arguments, and silence. The students looked at each other. What was going on?

Sango froze. "Uh…you're probably expecting some crappy announcements, but I have a more important one…"

Miroku had begged and pleaded with Muyo. He had got on his knees. And Muyo gave in, sighing and shaking his head. Muyo worked in the main office as a temporary secretary because the real one was on maternity leave. And he glanced nervously at the principal's door.

"You know Miroku, you're getting blamed for this."

Miroku nodded and stood, "don't worry, I'll say I threatened you."

"Come on, this way." Muyo led Miroku towards the back with all the equipment that controlled the locks, lights, air conditioning, and other things. He walked over a tall tower that had switches and buttons for god knows what. Muyo turned to him, one hand on a switch.

"This turns it on. Talk right here. Be ready." Miroku nodded and stood in front the speaker looking space in the tower. Muyo turned the switch, and a little green light came on. Miroku gulped and fixed his shirt. Muyo sighed.

"Come on! You don't have much time!" he hissed.

"I know!" Miroku hissed back. Muyo rolled his eyes and waited. Miroku took a breath.

"Uh…you're probably expecting some crappy announcement, but I have a more important one…"

He could have sworn he heard the whole school hush.

"Um…I know it might seem insane that I'm on here, but I have something to say. …earlier this year, I was known as the school playboy, the lecher, the pervert, whatever you thought. But it was true then, and I sort of regret it. but then that all changed one day, cause I stopped being a coward…have…have you ever just looked at somebody, and had this instant connection? Or looked at your crush and saw them looking at you? Or just…felt destined? I know this may sound insane, but it has a point."

Miroku squared his shoulders, and Muyo gave him the thumbs up. "Well, I have. And I never realized I could feel this way. It's too deep to ignore, and sometimes too painful to give up. The first time I knew, was when I saw her in junior high. She walked in, and I thought I would have a heart attack. And I knew, she was the one for me. And though it took some insisting, and some effort I got closer to her……we were friends for awhile, and then I couldn't take it, I asked her out. And she said yes."

He looked down at his hands and took a breath everyone heard. "She said yes. I thought it was the luckiest day of my life. She said yes to me, a player, a lecher, some one who asked others all the time, most of the time being refused…ha-ha…but um…we started going out, and I didn't know the feeling I had could go any deeper, but it did. It went so deep, it felt like it was a part of me my whole life. And I never realized it was so fragile until it was ripped from me. I'm telling you here and now, I will never feel anything more painful then having my heart ripped from my chest, cause there's nothing like it. And there's no doubt I'm mad at the person who did it, but I feel like a jackass. Cause I hurt her, really bad.

"And I never wanted to hurt her, ever. And it hurt, cause she hurt because of me. And I'm not going to explain what happened, because it's behind me, even though it boils my blood to even think about it. And I know it hurts her to think about it, but I let go, and there's only one thing that matters now. Her. And now I stand here, talking to everyone, about to make the biggest announcement of my life…well, here's goes…I, Miroku Houshi, former school pervert, play boy, whatever, am here to tell the whole school, no the whole world…that I have fallen in love with a beautiful girl, who's smart, funny, strong, and tolerates no shit…ha…anyways, you probably all know who it is, but I'm gonna say it anyways. I fell in love with a girl, and I'm never going to stop loving her, cause she's my world. I fell in love with a girl, and that girl is Sango Taijiya…Sango, if you're listening, please, I'm sorry and I never want to hurt you again. But please…please take me back…I can't…I can't…turn it off…just turn it off man!"

Muyo flipped the switch quickly, and watched quietly as Miroku turned to him, giving him a quiet thanks. Muyo said nothing about the tears that glazed Miroku's eyes.

---------------------------------------------{%&%}--------- ----------------------------------------

The whole class turned her way. Sango couldn't breath, staring blankly at her hands. And the tears never stopped flowing. When her breath came back, it came back in gasps. Kagome wiped the tears from her cheeks, as did many other girls. Inuyasha kept his head hung, letting out a sigh when Sango made no move to get up or anything. Sango was lost in her own world.

She couldn't believe it, she really couldn't. He would do all that, just for her. He would up and speak his mind to the whole school, even if it meant he'd be teased or made fun of. Because he loved her. One sob escaped, she covered it with her hands. She looked up, and saw that the whole class was watching her, waiting. She looked from each face, saw how each nudged her to get up and go. And she really wanted to, but her legs wouldn't work. She felt a hand on her shoulder, and looked to find Ms. Akido smiling down at her.

"Don't let love go to waste Sango, it will only causes pain."

Though Sango was still out of it, students watched as her feet picked her up and she walked out the door. She headed towards the office. Her walking became faster, and turned to jogging, then jogging turned to running, and then finally, she flat out flew down the hall. She was such a fool. How could she have been such a fool?

Students watched from the class window in the door as Sango sped to the office.

------------------------------------{%&%}------------------ -------------------------------------------

Miroku was a bit surprised that he wasn't in trouble for doing that. When he turned around, the principal was there, but not with detention or suspension, but with his blessings. It meant a lot to Miroku, and he hoped that they would help.

And so he sat in the hall outside the office, hands hanging between his knees, eyes staring into space. And he waited. And he waited. Doubt grabbed him, making his eyes dart back and forth. He stood and turned one way, and then the other. She wasn't coming. His breath caught. She wasn't coming. He had been afraid of this, and now it came true. She wasn't coming. His shoulders drooped, and he turned away from the office. He didn't hear the foot falls.

"MIROKU!" He spun around the other way, and he smiled. There she was, slightly doubled and panting from her run. But tears ran down her cheeks, and she gave him a watery smile. Her face crumpling, she ran to him. And he caught her, arms wrapping tightly around her, and his nose taking in her familiar scent that he had longed for. And she cried, really hard on him.

"I'm s-s-so s-s-orry! I-I-I n-never wanted t-to hurt you! I j-j-just-"

"Sssh…its okay, it okay…oh Jesus Sango, you have no idea how scared I was. I so scared of losing you. I missed you so much, everything about you…"

She pulled back and stared lovingly into his eyes. She bit her lip and shook her head, framing his face gently. "You never lost me Miroku, never. Just don't do anything like that again!"

He smiled brightly and brought his lips down to gently kiss her, bringing fresh tears to her eyes. He pulled back, and she saw his glazed gaze. He wiped the tears that rolled down her cheek and kissed them away. "Don't cry Koi, don't cry. I love you, don't cry. Please, I love you."

It only made her cry more, "don't you ever stop loving me, cause I could never stop loving you."

He smiled more, and swung her around, making her laugh. "That's good to know, cause you're one in a million Sango, and I'll never let you go."

She wanted to shove him, but brought her arms around his neck instead, and held her lips a breath away. "If you even dare, I'll kill you."

He laughed. Well, he had Sango back.
