CHAPTER 46: SOME THINGS ARE WORSE THAN A BROKEN HEART

Bum-bump…

There were bright lights flashing, white as clouds, painful to the eyes. There was a shaking beneath them, jerking them from side to side.

Bum-bump…

"Seventeen year old female, identity not yet known, collision with a truck."

Someone was talking, telling something to other people. They could feel hands poking and prodding at their body, crowded around their small little bed, the wheels squeaking as they went somewhere.

Bum-bump…

"What's the extent of injuries?"

"The air bag failed, the driver was crushed between the steering wheel and seat. Massive trauma to the head, some broken ribs, and it's believed there's internal bleeding. Pelvic bones feel fine, but we can't be sure. One broken femur, left, and massive bruising."

"Alright, let's get her to the OR! Prep OR 3, we have an auto accident victim, with possible internal bleeding. I want this taken care of ASAP!"

Bum-bump…

The bed was jerked to a stop, and hands flew over their body, ripping clothes, checking vitals signs. An agony unknown ruptured inside them, and they heard the people curse as blood poured from their mouth.

"Shit! The lung's punctured! I want to get in there now, and close the hole! The ribs we can pin after!"

"Doctor, her vital signs are weakening, blood pressure increasing and heart rate is skyrocketing."

"She's lost too much blood…shit, give me a scalpel and clamp, prep the IV and get the blood bank to come down with two pints. Cutting now."

Bum-bump, bum-bump…

Cold steel connected with their flesh, and a hot searing pain cut through them, making them scream a silent cry. Hot liquid poured from the cut, the hand pressing them down and making more spurt from their mouth.

"Suction!"

A hissing noise was heard, and some of the hot liquid was taken away. But they just…couldn't hold on…it was so dark…

"Blood pressure is 165 and rising!"

"Then support me! I'm not about to let her die!"

So dark…so peaceful…

Bum-bump…

Inuyasha woke with a start, thrashing and flailing his arms around. He panted heavily, and could feel the streams of sweat pour down his face and body. He held up his hands in the darkness, and saw they shook like a junkie's. He felt clammy and cold, and his heart would not slow down. He flopped back down on his bed, eyes darting over the ceiling. What had that been about? That had to be the most realistic dream he's ever had. The sounds, so close to him. The feelings, like they were real. Way did it nag him so? Why was it driving him crazy? As if that was new.

He sighed as he sat up, hunching shoulders as he just sat there. They had kept saying `her', or `she', it was really weird. But it was after all a dream. But it had been so painful, like a torture. But it was still nothing compared to what she had done yesterday. Coming in here like she owned the place, thinking she could just talk her way out of it. Oh no my friend, broken hearts should go all around, not just one-way.

He frowned. Yet he still felt like the scum of the earth for saying those things to her. Her eyes…so expressive, so painful, so confused. He shook his head. Eyes could confuse you too, and looking into them doesn't help. He turned his head to stare out his window, well not really. It was heavily draped, but he could still watch the sunlight that filtered through, watch the dust in the air as the little particles passed through the light. He scowled. But that's the thing, she was confused, she was utterly bewildered when he had been talking. Its like she didn't understand what was going on, why he was yelling at her. She was lost, like a child who was framed.

He sighed and rubbed his temples. Oh Kagome, what have to done to me? Why can't I leave you alone?

Because you love her genius, I thought you already knew this.

Inuyasha pushed back that annoying little voice. What good did that do him? To love? It obviously hadn't been good enough for her. But god if he didn't want to find her and touch her again, to kiss her make it all better. He missed her beyond belief. He missed her smile, her beautiful brown eyes, and her laugh when she was being evil and doing annoying things. He missed her smooth sexy voice, her scent, that wonderful rich scent that drove him wild when it was mixed with need. He missed her touch, her smooth hands, her every curve, the heat she only gave him. Oh by the heavens did he want to shoot himself. And it's only been three days. He had tried to call her, fight with her, make things right, but her mother had answered, saying she was sleeping and wasn't feeling good. That she had locked herself in her room.

Could he really be mistaken? Could she have done this for a reason? Had somebody made her do this? If that was true-

Tap tap.

Inuyasha looked up from his stupor and stared at his door. He sniffed and found it was Miroku on the other side. He scowled darkly at the door. Miroku knocked again. "What?!"

"Open the door Inuyasha," Miroku said coolly, his voice low and held an undertone of misery. Inuyasha blinked. What the hell? A new scent came, deeper than his, and he recognized it as Sesshomaru's. He got up with a huff, what now?

He yanked open the door, planning to give a piece of his mind. But he stopped dead in his tracks. Miroku had his head hung, and looked a stressed mess. His eyes were dark and hollow, shells of the former life they once held. Sesshomaru was just the same, but he actually looked sad for a change. Something was up, he knew it. "What the hell do you want?"

Sesshomaru stalked right past him into his room, jaw tight, "just shut up and sit down, there's something you need to see."

Miroku followed, walking past a shocked Inuyasha. Inuyasha growled and closed his door curtly, watching as Sesshomaru found his TV remote. He pointed it the flat screen and clicked, and the TV came to life. Few flips of some channels, and he came upon the news, letting his arm fall, and leaning on the wall. Inuyasha stood next to him. "What is this about?"

"Just watch Inuyasha," Miroku said quietly, not looking at the TV. Worry caught at Inuyasha's gut, and he slowly sat down, glancing at the TV till it caught his attention. Sesshomaru turned it up.

A stiffly seated man came on the screen, a gray suit with blue shirt and red tie accenting his perfectly cut hair. He looked down at his papers while in the corner a picture of police tape came up, the title saying "INTERSECTION COLLISION".

The man looked up, "this is Juno Morito, with the channel 12 news. Top story tonight, a car accident on the corner of 23rd and 5th business section, was reported yesterday as a near fatal accident. Sazuno Narutiku with more on the story, Sazuno?"

The scene changed to a pretty dark haired middle-aged woman, with a stern face and microphone held in her hand. She was standing in the middle of a busy sidewalk, right in front of the clean up crew of the accident.

"Thank you Juno. What you see behind me is the scene of the accident. At 1:35 PM yesterday, witnesses report that a 1998 maroon Honda came speeding down 23rd, heading straight for traffic, where at the intersection, cars were passing by. Accounts have it that the driver suddenly hit their brakes, coming to a skidding halt just before it hit a 1985 black Ford, the Ford owner getting out to confront the Honda driver. But that was only the beginning.

The driver of a Poland Springs delivery truck had been driving the opposite direction as the Ford, going at a fast speed, and was unable to make a fast stop. The driver of the truck, Izirugi Zanataku, had claimed that he never saw the Honda before it was too late, searching for a delivery list clipboard. Reports show that Izirugi had tried to stop, but the momentum of the truck was too much, and ultimately crashed into the Honda, crushing the driver's side, and sending the car rolling to pin the driver inside."

She turned around and crouched by the ground, where thousands of pieces of glass were on the street. "This is but a taste of the carnage that had happened. We have police photos…"

One came up, making Inuyasha's heart stop. It was on its side, metal parts flung to random places, the glass of the windows and windshield scattered all over the ground. The car was a twisted metal heap, the only thing that was recognizable was the front and back of the car. It switched, and it was a view of the driver's seat through the windshield. The car was arched, one side having been caved in by the truck, and the driver's seat was almost smashed into the steering wheel, where a deflated popped air bag hung. He could just make out where the firefighters had pried their way in, and the blood that was splattered over the dashboard.

"The driver of the maroon Honda was taken to Machiyahara Hospital (A/n: real hospital), where they now remain in ICU after critical injuries were stabilized. What?…You do?"

A hand came out from behind the camera and handed Sazuno a paper, where she scanned it quickly. She looked back, "Juno, we just received the identity of the victim. A young woman…seventeen-year-old Kagome Higurashi of the Sunset shrine. We-"

Sesshomaru turned it off, and waited patiently. Miroku was trying hard not to let his hands shake. Inuyasha stared at the blank screen, pale as paper. His blood had drained from his head, leaving him lightheaded and woozy.

"Her mother called and told us about it, and the news report. Sango's at the hospital doing the best she can to comfort Mrs. Higurashi. Inuyasha…" Miroku trailed off and swallowed the lump in his throat; his best friend was ignoring him, still staring at the screen. Sesshomaru closed his eyes. It was true at times he liked to torment his brother, but his face…his eyes…not even he was the cruel. He sprang up from the wall, leaving the TV remote somewhere, and motioned for Miroku to follow him out. Miroku looked between the brothers's but found it would be better to go with Sesshomaru. All there was left was a soft click as Inuyasha's door closed, leaving him in the darkness, staring to space.

Inuyasha's eyes burned, they stung with new feeling, and large knot formed in his throat. He tried hard to swallow it, but each time he did, it would get bigger until he found him self gasping for breathe. What…what just happened? What the fuck just happened? Please, somebody do not tell him he had seen and heard correctly! This was not happening! How…who…she was just…fuck he was so confused! This was inconceivable! Totally and utterly fucking bullshit! He got up and started pacing, his steps hasty and desperate. The palms of his hands rubbed at his temple and he stopped in place. How could this have happened? How could she get hurt like this?

Because of you you stupid shit!! Did you not see it?

See what? What was he suppose to see?! She had just broke his fucking heart and he was suppose to see something!?

But you saw her leave! You saw her drive out like a maniac, just begging for something to come and kill her! And all because you wouldn't fucking listen you idiotic son of a moron! Now look what happened!

Inuyasha looked up and let his arms fall to his sides. For the first time he could remember, Inuyasha's lip was trembling, and along with his hurt boiled self hate. He crossed his brows and scowled at the nearest thing, which would be the wall. Actually, he felt like hitting it. Unaware, his fist connected with the wall, punching a hole right through. He left it there as he just stared down at his feet; the grief and the pain welling up and about ready to burst. But what good would it do him? Having a fucking wimpy tantrum when Kagome was in the hospital because she almost fucking died!

He couldn't take it, standing there and pitying himself wasn't going to do shit. He grabbed any shirt from the floor or closet wherever he got it and slipped on some sandals. He had to see her, even if she was asleep or truly utterly pissed off and in pain, he had to see her. He snatched his keys and stalked out the door. Hasty, he ran down the stairs to come face to face with his brother. Sesshomaru stared down coldly, but he made no sign to move. Inuyasha growled up at him, his patience running thin.

"Get out of my way."

Sesshomaru stepped aside but grabbed his arm before he passed. "Do it right this time Inuyasha. Your mouth running before your head can be dangerous, as we've seen."

That just made him feel all the more worse. Stupid Sesshomaru, why does he have to be right? Without even acknowledging he heard, Inuyasha pushed right past him, pushed open the front door and headed to the garages at the side. He went right, turning the corner, and opened the steel garage door with a press off a button. He opened his jeep and got in, making the engine purr to life, and quite surprisingly collective, he drove out calmly, waiting for the gate to open and then driving off.

Inuyasha remained blank as he drove but felt the greasy knot in his stomach form when he passed by the clean up crew at the intersection. He took notice of how busy this intersection was. God, Kagome had been signing a death wish coming down here at that speed. And it was his entire fault. There was no way he could deny it, he had pushed her over the edge, and she became reckless and almost got herself killed. Almost.

It took him by surprise when he found himself parked in Machiyahara Hospital parking lot. He took a breath, and stepped out, locking his car and walking to the sliding door entrance. He walked right up to the reception desk where an unnatural red head was pressing buttons on the phone and writing down appointments in a book. He taped the desk with a claw and she looked up with hazel eyes, and motioned for him to wait one minute. She pressed hold for every call, and looked up exasperated. "May I help you?"

"I want to see Kagome Higurashi." Inuyasha watched as she looked at the registry, then she shook her head.

"Sorry, she's in ICU, family only." She recited and went back to her work.

"You don't seem to understand," Inuyasha said lowly, trying very hard to keep patience, " I need to see her, she's my girlfriend."

The woman scowled, "I'm sorry but-"

"Its okay Misu," Mrs. Higurashi came up on his left and scared the living day lights out of him, "I'll take him back to see her."

"But-" Misu was cut off again when Mrs. Higurashi curtly turned and dragged Inuyasha with her. His eyes darted back and forth. He hated hospitals, they stank like…well hospitals. Sick people, blood old and new, alcohol, disinfectant, sweat of doctors and nurses working their asses off. The PA spoke every five minutes, calling a doctor or requesting clean up. Kagome's mother had a death grip on his arm, and just kept walking to where the scent of injured grew stronger.

"Mrs.-"

"She was pretty bad," her mother interrupted, "I was hysterical when I got the call. Miho tried to get me to calm down after my father called her, but it did no good. So she opted to drive me here, where I got so bad they needed to sedate me. She looks like a mummy with all her bandages."

Inuyasha bit his lip as he smelled her tears, and was jerked to a stop outside one room. She looked him squarely in the eyes. "I'm telling you now, so you can be prepared. The truck did damage, almost breaking her skull open and smashing her between the steering wheel and seat. That broke her ribs and punctured her lung…she…she almost didn't make it on the operating table."

Inuyasha paled to not white but a sickly gray. The image of blood on her dashboard went through his mind. Kagome's mother shook her head, "they found her pelvic fracture, and her left femur's broken in two places. They had to pin that and two ribs back together. Lots of bruising, and she hasn't woken up since. For god's sakes she on a respirator!"

Inuyasha panicked when the woman started breaking down, but she quickly composed her self, jerking her head to the door. Inuyasha nodded and opened and closed the door quietly, making sure not to turn around yet. He braced himself with a calming breath and turned slowly, heart pounding in his ears. He heard the faint hiss of machines, the beep…beep…of the heart monitor. The curtain hid the view, and he held up a shaking hand to move it. The light behind it cast a ghastly light, making him jumpy and thinking of deathbeds. No it wasn't good to think of that.

He pulled it back, and held back his gasp. There she lay, his angel from heaven, wrapped in white cloth almost head to toe. The blanket hid her bottom half, but her top was enough for him. Her head was bound tightly; raven locks poking out the bottom to gently farme her shoulders. They hadn't even bothered with a gown, her middle was wrapped in nothing but gauze, from her chest down. The blanket was pulled up to her bound breasts, under he arms that lay still and pale. He looked away for a second, his heart so twisted it was beyond pain. He saw her IV, and a blood pouch dripping steadily down a different tube that went into her arm. Inuyasha went to the other side, and pulled up a chair, gazing upon her past the breathing tube that was taped into her mouth with medical tape. Her cheeks were hollow and thin, cheekbones sticking out. Dark circles smudged her eyes, and the ugly bruises bloomed over half her face.

He could never, ever have fathomed something like this to happen, most of all to her. And he felt lower than scum. First they break up, then they fight, even if it was one sided, then this. He bit his lip, almost drawing blood to hold back the sting in his eyes. He reached out and took a pale hand, squeezing it for all he was worth. It was cold.

He grabbed it with his other hand, as if hoping to bring warmth back to it and leaned his forehead against their joined hands. The stinging in his eyes increased, and dread bubbled with glee in his gut. His shoulders jerked once. He raised his head, and brought her hand to his lips, eyes squeezing tightly shut, as salty tears of despair ran down his cheeks.

"I'm so sorry…" he whispered, chanting it over and over and he kissed his hand again and again, till he finally just broke down. Keeping Kagome's hand in his grasp, he rested his head on her bed. And cried, with nothing but the harsh hiss of the respirator to be heard over his sobs.
