Chapter One

A Teacher's Horrible Blunder

Rain drummed noisily against the window as if determined to shatter the glass.

A bolt of lightening flitted across the murky skies, bringing forth an eerie blue surge of light to illuminate the entire parking lot. It was almost as if God was scowling down at the world with the lightning's shuddering booms and echoing crashes, yet Higurashi Kagome just barely paid that any mind.

She sat at the foot of the bed, legs leniently dangling as she frowned in wonder towards her bare feet. They finally stopped swinging just as she averted her bleary gaze towards the bluish light constantly flashing across the pane of her window and seeping down the walls to paint the emerald carpet. Her mind toppled in somersaults and rebuilt itself effortlessly back into place as she began to feel the same migraine slink back within her head, causing her vein to throb with that usual promise of bursting at any moment.

A gentle sigh disturbed the feeble silence trying its best to gather around her, yet the thunderous crashes outside only caused it to shrink in cower.

Gathering her long lost composure, Kagome pranced over towards the vanity sitting lifelessly before her, the large mirror nearly turning her world upside down as she looked further into the glass and tried to capture a little bit more of her reflection. Once again, a raucous boom of thunder jolted her from her thoughts as she spared a wary glance towards the window, then back at her mirror-twin.

Her twin merely stared towards her with an identical expression until her eyes wilted towards the golden band found nearby the stack of makeup. Kagome carefully picked up the ring as it dangled vaguely across her right index finger, yet it grew unnoticed.

A bolt of thunder lit the skies once again like a bluish flame trying its best to stay within the sky. A streak of blue painted one side of Kagome's cheek as she removed the band from her finger in order to observe it more closely. There, inside the band, an engraved verse was carved into the priceless gold. It read mysteriously in cursive: "Love is the ring that connects us."

In that verse, the ring soon slipped from her fingers just as a shower of sobs drenched the patch of carpet alongside it. She was finally crying and there was not a damn thing her body could do for her now.

The thunder simply replied with its usual crash and ghostly light, as the rain upon the window grew stronger and heavier.

A dark haired woman gazed dazedly at Kagome, watching intently with that strange blankness that could tell anyone that she was probably long overdue to lose the last drop of tranquility she had. Her jaded eyes finally relinquished towards the iron surface of the restaurant table as she murmured gravely, "So you couldn't stop thinking about him last night?"

"No," Kagome despairingly replied, bowing her head towards the table as well.

Last night was noted to be the third anniversary of her late husband's and her divorce, yet she defiantly bottled in the information and kept it solely to herself. She only wanted to feel his possessive arms wrap around her again and ward off the clenching pain within the aching bowls of her stomach. She wanted to feel that familiar warmth he always gave her when he kissed her and caused her toes to curl in raw pleasure. She didn't want to admit it, but she actually missed him and his hardheaded words all together.

The young woman sitting opposite her laced her fingers with unease atop of the table. Her hair cascaded in a sea of raven locks that were desperate to hide the wounded look within her eyes, yet it failed miserably as she muttered, "Maybe it's just best to form a plan and move out everything that has to deal with him, out of your house."

Head jerking up with that usual look of people who found themselves forked between a rock and a hard place, Kagome gave a heavy sigh before cupping her forehead, "I just…really don't know anymore."

The sun beamed proudly above beyond the drifting clouds, blinding Kagome's eyes worse than anything as she buried her head farther into her hand.

The singsong chirps of birds fluttered through the trees, bringing forth that sickening pain to her ears as she let out a low growl filled with frustration and clasped both hands onto her ears. "Eri, I just don't think I can take this anymore. I'm about to drive myself crazy and end up with a one-way ticket to the mental institution."

Her friend blearily traced the rim of her glass, ignoring the straying droplets of orange juice as they trickled from the edge. Her eyes appeared crammed with swimming thoughts until she lifted her finger to her lips and lapped the rest of the orange juice from its tip. "Maybe we should just go back to the campus. Your lunch break is almost done with anyway," she murmured, her eyes now filled with joy, "After you get off we can go to a movie to take your mind off of…erm…some things."

Kagome tried her best to ignore the paining stammer, all of which she was sure was on the narrow verge of 'husband'. She plainly smiled and pulled her purse into her lap, "Anyways, so who's going to pay the tip?"

"Well…" Eri chortled, feeling as a quick wave of relief washed over her entire senses and a feeling of warmth surged through her aching veins. When she finally came to see Kagome's disbelieving expression, she quickly waved off her initial hesitance and briskly added, "I will. After all, I did say lunch was on me."

Kagome released a few snorts of laughter before rummaging through her purse and putting a five-dollar bill out onto the table, "Nah, lunch is on me this time, okay?"

Eri wanted to smile, wanted to object her offer, yet she remained silent, as the memories of her friend's past marriage became a whirlwind of emotions within her mind. Her eyes wilted slightly, their joy stolen while she loosened her fingers and placed her hands within her lap. Why is she laughing like this? She asked herself, ignoring the twinge of concern that haunted her mind, 'Why is she acting as if everything is suddenly all right?'

Sparing a quick, yet despairing glance towards her bewildered friend, she finally flashed her a phony smile as she slid out of the chair onto her feet, Why is she hurting herself like this?

Bang.

The vicious pointing stick slammed against the chalkboard, splaying bits of chalk dust to drift into the air. It was pointing towards a long equation situated beneath the raggedy title, "Life Science" as several miserable groans cascaded upon the crowd of students staring forlornly towards the chalkboard. Each student leaned their heads against their exhausted palms and drummed their pencils in no particular rhythm atop of their desks, each one thinking venomously, 'Damn homework.'

"I hope today you've paid close attention to the lesson," began Kagome as she took her pointing stick and placed it upon the board's metal panel, "because tonight's homework will be based on scientific equations in order for you to solve the questions."

Another set of groans hummed through the silence.

Kagome sighed heavily as she trudged back towards her desk chair and began to pack her things, "Class dismissed."

Immediately, the sound of rustling backpacks and papers filled the air, coinciding with the hurried shuffles of footsteps stampeding hurriedly out of the classroom. The room was finally empty with the usual trash littering the linoleum floors when Kagome finally caressed her forehead and spewed out the bit of air that was bottled up within her even before class.

She could feel her shoulders release the mounting tension uncomfortably settled upon them as she started back to packing the rest of her things and leaving the classroom without a second glance. Switching off the lights and shutting the door carefully behind her, she traipsed off towards the main teacher's lounge with a look of defeat sinking across her face.

Kagome peered gingerly through the window of the wooden door, spotting the usual teachers gathered around the round table nearby the vending machine. Wearily, she snatched open the door and plunged into the flood of whispers and normal swoons that came from women who saw anything handsome in magazines these days. She nearly felt her eyes narrow as her one and only friend in the entire school, gazed up from her side of the table and tossed her a brilliant smile, "Hey, Kag! What's up?"

Kagome couldn't help but wish that she spoke a bit softer as the rest of the teachers spared a conscious glance from the magazine and chucked several false smiles that were nearly enough to cause her brows to furrow. As if nothing happened at all, they then continued on with their swooning and whispers as they flipped through the magazine and disregarded Kagome as she strolled towards a neglected seat beside her friend.

"So, what are ya'll up to now, Sango?" she asked, ignoring the slight strain in her voice as she hoisted her pack from her shoulders and dropped it to the floor beside her.

Shoulder-length hair bouncing as if dancing joyously, the one called Sango, tossed a brisk look towards the magazine before aiming her gaze back towards her straight-faced companion, "Nothing much. They're just still swooning over that Inu-something guy."

"Inuyasha, the famous movie actor?" questioned Kagome as her eyes grew wide, desperate for answers.

Sango gazed towards her friend with a look of disbelief caked upon her face, yet a playful smile still tilted her lips, "Looks like a certain someone's been boning up on their studies."

"W-what!" Suddenly, it felt as if a flame was pressed firmly against Kagome's cheeks as both grew warm with flush. Quickly, she slunk deeper within her chair before adding a bit softer, "I just read magazines, that's all. There's nothing wrong with that."

A blank look seeped deep within Sango's eyes until that familiar, smug twinkle sparked within their dark brown depths. She smiled broadly, her pearly whites probably blinding beneath the fluorescent lighting, yet Kagome hardly paid any attention. "Sure, and I'm Queen Elizabeth." Sango sarcastically drawled.

Pushing herself up from her slumping position in the chair, Kagome stared calmly towards her friend before theatrically bowing. "My queen, I bow down to you."
