It was another peaceful morning in Tokyo. The sun was shining. The birds were singing. Children made their way to school dressed in their uniforms. Moms and Dads got in their cars and drove to work. It seemed to be another perfect day.
That is, until the peace was broken by the shrill siren of an ambulance.
Souta Higurashi clung to his mothers side as they entered the hospital. He couldn't believe what was happening. If only he'd been brave enough to go down into the well house, Kagome wouldn't have gotten hurt.
A doctor, clad in a white lab coat came forward and stopped before them. “Hello, I am Doctor Fushima. Are you the family of Higurashi Kagome?”
“We are.” Souta's mom replied.
“Where's my sister?” Souta cried. “Is she all right?”
Doctor Fushima bent down to his level. “What's your name?”
“Souta.” He replied wiping the tears from his eyes.
“Well Souta. Right now your sister is receiving stitches to fix that gash on her head. Do you know what stitches are?”
Souta nodded. “I got stitches when I fell off my bike and hurt my arm.”
“Ah very good. Now Souta. My log here says that you were there when your sister fell. Can you tell me exactly what happened?”
“My cat, Buyo, went down into the well house. I didn't want to go get him because it was spooky so I told Kagome to go. When she got down she tripped on something and fell on top of the well. The boards covering it were really old. They broke and she fell in.” Souta sniffled. “It's all my fault!”
“Now, now Souta. It's not your fault. It was an accident. Now, you mustn't cry. Kagome wouldn't want you to cry would she?” Souta shook his head. “She'd want you to be brave right?” Souta nodded and wiped his face on his sleeve.
“Good. Now how would you like to go play with some of the other kids Who are waiting to see their family members? We've got a nice little room set up with toys and video games…”
“O… okay.”
“Great.” He turned to a young lady who was passing by. “Sango.”
“Yes, Fushima-sensei.”
“You headed down to the children's center?”
“Yup.”
“Think you could take Souta here with you?”
“Sure!” Sango held out a hand to the young boy in front of her. “C'mon Souta. I'll introduce you to my little brother. You two will probably get along great.”
With that Souta and Sango left down the hallway. Dr. Fushima turned to the boy's mother. “Don't worry about your son Higurashi-san. Sango will take good care of him. Now about you daughter…”
“Will Kagome be alright?”
“Well, as far as we can tell, she hasn't sustained any major damage: cuts, bruises, a slight concussion. Nothing to worry about really. However, it would seem that your daughter has fallen into a coma. Now, she may wake up tomorrow or within the next couple of days, as is normally the case with such minor injuries. But then, I must warn you, there is also the chance that she will not wake up for a long time. It's very difficult to tell with comas. Mostly it just depends on the person.”
Mrs. Higurashi remand silent as the doctor spoke. Now she asked, “If she does not wake up in the next few days… is there any piece of technology or medicine that could help her… so that she wouldn't have to sleep forever?”
“I'm afraid not. We can patch her up, make sure she's getting nutrition… other then that it's all up to Kagome.”
“I see.” Mrs. Higurashi turned away. Dr. Fushima could tell she was in pain. According to his records, her husband was deceased. `She's afraid that she's going to loose another of her loved ones.'
“Higurashi-san. There is… one way. However, it's still in the testing phases and has yet to be tried on an actual coma patient. I don't know if you would be interested.”
“What is it? I'll try anything.”
“Well it's a special machine. My son invented it actually. You know, he'd probably be better at explaining this to you. Why don't I call him up?”

A young man walked into the children's center. His long, black hair was tied back in a ponytail but his unruly bangs hung loose in front of his deep brown eyes. At his appearance in the doorway, Sango looked up from helping a little boy with red hair buckle his overalls. “Hey InuYasha.”
Her simple statement sent the room into a frenzy and the boy was suddenly rundown by about ten different kids, including the little red head who still had one buckle undone.
InuYasha was well known in the children's center and, in fact, throughout the entire hospital. His father was one of the best doctors there, doing everything from pediatrics to heart surgery. Meanwhile, InuYasha was cool, great with kids, insanely hot (according to half the nursing staff), and of course there was the little fact that he was a certified child genius. He was only seventeen and already halfway finished with college.
While he spent most of his time studying, inventing, and doing other things that only child geniuses do, InuYasha always found a little time every day to visit the children's center of the hospital where his best friends, Sango and Miroku, had their after-school jobs. It was the only chance he got to act like the teenager he was.
After brushing off the last of the children who considered InuYasha to be his hero, He looked over at two of the kids who hadn't rushed over to see him. One he knew very well and considered to be his little brother. Kohaku was grinning at him with a look that clearly said, `The great InuYasha! Ha! Taken down by a bunch of little kids.'
The other boy, InuYasha had never met before. `Guess he's new.' Most kids didn't stay there for more then a few days. It was only those who's family members had cancer and other long term disease that became regulars. Kohaku, who was Sango's brother, and Shippo, the little red head whose parents were both in comas and who currently lived with InuYasha's family, were the only exceptions.
InuYasha made his way over to the two boys who had returned to their video games now that the commotion was over. He frowned as the game stalled out and Kohaku pounded on it to make it work again. The game system was an old SEGA model and the only games they had for it were Sonic the Hedgehog and the game with the little Seven Up dot. `I wish we had the money to buy them one of the new Playstations or at least a Nintendo. They'd love that.'
“Oi! Kohaku! You gonna introduce me to your new friend or what?”
Kohaku laughed. “InuYasha this is Souta. Souta, InuYasha.”
Souta looked up at him. “Did your parents really name you dog demon?”
It was InuYasha's turn to laugh. He got that a lot. “Um… no. But it sounds a lot better then what they did name me.”
“And what would that be?”
“Not telling. It's a secret.” Just then his cell phone started ringing. Grimacing, he pulled it out of his pocket. He hated the ring tone and wished he had one of the new ones where you could pick from a bunch of different ones. Then again, he should consider himself lucky. Cell phones were expensive and not many people could afford them, though he imagined that in a few years everyone would have one.
“Fushima Koinu.”
“Koinu?” Souta laughed. “Your name is puppy?!”
InuYasha held up a finger to silence him. “Hey Pop… Really? Are you serious?... yeah. I'll be right up. I'm in the children's center… Higurashi? Hold on…” He covered the mouth piece and shouted to the room. “Anyone here named Higurashi?”
Souta looked up. “That's me.”
InuYasha nodded and put the phone back to his ear. “Yeah, he's here… sure… we'll be right there… Bye.” He hung up and put the phone back in his pocket. “C'mon Souta. Your Mom's waiting for you.”
“Oh! Okay. Bye Kohaku!”
“Bye!”
Souta followed InuYasha out of the children's center and down the hallway. They remained silent in the elevator as a teenage girl cried on her father's shoulder. InuYasha frowned. Tears were common in the hospital, but if there was one thing InuYasha couldn't stand, it was a crying girl. It always made him feel so helpless. He wanted to help them, to make everything alright. But how do you heal the wounds caused by loosing someone you love?
The doors slid open and InuYasha and Souta made their way to the waiting room where his dad was speaking to a woman he could only assume was Souta's mother and the one who would give him a chance to see if his invention really worked.

I don't know when I'll update. I had the next chapter all written out but my laptop crashed before I transferred it to my main computer. So I'll probably have to rewrite the whole thing. : P
I'm just getting back into the swing of things with this story. I've been out of commission as far as fanfiction goes for sometime now. I don't know how often I'll be updating but I do know that reviews are great motivators.
So tell me what you think.
