Kagome sighed while looking at herself in the mirror. It was less then an hour before the big banquet and she was dreading going. She loved the Yamamoto's, but the rest of the Mori's were always a bit much for her, and now she had to sit and have a 3 course meal with them in formal wear. Looking down at the invitation she frowned.
.
Be the bell of the ball, a formal banquet in honor of Zuko Mori and Hojo Yamamoto the first.
.
She looked back at the mirror and sighed once more. The over dressed feeling she had was still very much present, but she had fallen in love with the dress. It was a halter cut deep plum satin dress with a chiffon ruched bust-line. The back was a low plunge that stopped at the small of her back, with a tasteful beading detail spreading out along her butt starting from the point of the plunge. It was a simple ball gown she had found one day window shopping. It was the only one in the store and she felt it was made just for her. She began to pin back half of her hair and fluffed her loose curls when someone knocked on her door.
.
Going to the door she opened it, smiling brightly as both her friends stuck a pose in their semi-formal dresses. Leave it to the two single ladies to stir up a commotion in scandalous dresses sure to give the old men a heart attack.
.
"Oh Kagome you look gorgeous!" Rin gushed as they walked into her room. Rin was dressed in a satin light rose dress with a V like hem line. It was a smooth satin in the bust with a beaded embellishment along the waist and straps with a pleated skirt. She had on a matching pair of strappy satin heels, making her legs look much longer then her 5 foot frame.
.
"You both look amazing!" Kagome made Sango twirl around to see the back of her dress. She wore a satin tube top black dress that had a red paint splatter design along the front with a red sash around her waist. She had on simple black pumps that made her an extra three inches tall. Her hair was done up in a messy bun, the stray strands were curled and fell along her bare shoulders while Rin's hair was her normal stick straight accented with a diamond barrette holding the one size back.
.
"I feel under dressed next to you," Sango said with a smile, "I'm excited to see you in your wedding dress!" Kagome groaned while sinking down onto her bed. The other two girls exchanged worried looks, "what's wrong?"
.
"I haven't even picked out a dress yet," Kagome admitted with a sheepish grin, "I've been so busy, and everything I've looked at just doesn't scream out to me. They're all so very...blah."
.
"Oh honey I'm sure you'll find something! We'll make a day out of it!" Rin exclaimed with a wild grin, "I'm never going to get to shop for a wedding dress so you have to let me help you!"
.
"Why won't you ever shop for one Rin? It's not like men aren't falling all over themselves just for you to date them," Kagome rose an eyebrow at the gleam in Rin's eye.
.
"No I didn't say I'd never get married Kagome, just no wedding dress," Rin looked in the mirror smoothing down her hair, "It's going to be an all out Vegas wedding. Elvis and all." Both girls burst out laughing, earning a glare from Rin.
.
"Oh Rin you are a hoot," Sango said in a sing song voice as she yanked Kagome to her feet, "So when is Hojo coming to pick you up?"
.
"He's already there," Kagome said a bit sadly, "he's not even sitting with me."
.
"I'm sorry what?" Rin glared at Kagome's reflection in the mirror as she touched up her lip gloss.
.
"The family members are all sitting together," Kagome replied, "but we're all sitting together! Which is much better then sitting with a bunch of business busy bodies."
.
"I suppose that is a plus," Sango grinned as they headed out the door. Kagome stopped, heart jumping into her throat as they nearly ran into Inuyasha, who was standing outside his door. His amber eyes widened, before slowly looking her up and down. Her eyes darted down at herself, nothing inappropriate was showings so why did she suddenly feel naked.
.
"Hello ladies," her eyes were ripped away from Inuyasha to Miroku who was emerging from the room behind him. They were both dressed in tuxedos. Inuyasha wore a sleek black with a deep red tie while Miroku wore a vibrate white with a pale blue tie.
.
"Hey, you work at Mixology don't you!" Rin declared with a grin, "you were there the night these two.."
.
"Rin!" every inch of Kagome's exposed skin was now a scarlet. Inuyasha took a sudden interest in the floor as Miroku just chuckled.
.
"Yes I do work at Mixology, my mentor owns it actually," Sango rose an eyebrow, "I'm also a practicing monk." she rolled her eyes.
.
"You're very handsie for a monk," Sango gave him a sideways glance as she started to shoo the girls away, "we'll be late, let's go."
.
"Why don't you allow us to escort you? Our dates are already waiting and seated," Miroku smiled at them. Inuyasha glared at him, but still managed to look at the floor.
.
"I think we can handle ourselves, thanks," Rin said taking Kagome's hand and leading them away from the boys. Once they were out of hearing rang she turned on Sango, who seemed to shrink away from her prying eyes, "he's cute and looked totally in to you! Sango." she nearly hissed.
.
"He's a pervert!"
.
"He did carry your bags for you," Kagome pipped in, "and any man willing to take on your luggage should at least get one date."
.
"Are you really siding with her? He tried to grab my butt!" Sango shot a look over her shoulder, Miroku waved innocently at her. Glaring, she turned angry eyes onto her friends, "Don't even start with me."
.
"Okay okay!" Rin giggled as they entered the dining hall and found their seats. "hey...looks like we're seated with Miroku and Inuyasha!" she laughed almost evilly as Sango gave her a murderous look. Why me? Kagome thought.
.
`~`
.
"They all look amazing, don't you agree Inuyasha?" Miroku elbowed his friend in the ribs, and received a smack on the back of the head in return. Miroku chuckled as they found their names, at the same table as the three girls. "Well hello!" They all looked at up them, Kagome still a shade of pink.
.
"Miroku, there's an empty seat next to Sango over there!" Rin pointed across the table, receiving a deathly glare from her friend. She only shrugged and sipped her champagne. Inuyasha looked around and made sure the unsteady tower was no where near them. He chuckled, it was by the family table. Kikyo waved at him, nearly exposing one of her breasts.
.
"Oh my, and I thought my dress was a little informal," Sango said spying Kikyo's get up. It was a black dress that barely covered the tops of her thighs with a deep V neck that went down to mid stomach, dolmen sleeves and a satin belt cinched around her anorexic waist. Her hair was done in curls, looking very similar to Kagome's.
.
"It's not that bad," Inuyasha muttered taking his seat next to Rin. Why did they have to be stuck with them? Rin and Sango he could handle, but he was forced to face Kagome who was looking like a goddess tonight. She was elegantly sexy, something so few woman can pull off.
.
"Kagome," everyone looked up as Hojo approached them. He paused and looked down at himself then back up at Inuyasha. They were wearing the exact same thing, down to the designer shoes, "I like your outfit Inuyasha." he chuckled and received a glare from Inuyasha.
.
"Hojo you look great," Kagome stood up and hugged her fiance. He started as his hand came into bare contact of her lower back.
.
"Kagome you really should be wearing a jacket or something," he mumbled glancing down her bare back over her shoulder in the hug. Kagome sighed and pulled away, an almost angry look crossing her features.
.
"Maybe you should be telling your cousin to put on some pants," Hojo looked mortified and looked around at the table, they all had smiles on their faces. Sango nodded and rose her glass up.
.
"I second that!" Rin giggled at Sango's declaration and clinked glasses with her. Hojo began to do that annoying shuffling again when he was nervous. How did they expect him to run a multi million dollar company? Inuyasha sighed and shook his head and took a swig from his glass as well. Tonight would require at least twenty glasses of champagne to get through.
.
"Miroku!" Yura nearly threw herself in his lap, wrapping her arms around his neck in a hug, "you look so handsome, I'm so sad you can't sit with us." Her dressed inched up further as she crossed her legs, causing Miroku's eyes to dip lower.
.
"I'm sorry sweet pea, after dinner we can go for drinks, they have a lovely bar here," Yura giggled and placed a sloppy kiss on his lips, causing Sango to gag. Kikyo walked up and wrapped her arm around Inuyasha's shoulders, giving Kagome a smile.
.
"Hello Kagome," she briefly gave Sango and Rin a look before focusing back on Kagome, "you look...interesting." Here we go again, Inuyasha thought finishing off his drink and signaled the waiter for another one,
.
"I think she looks exquisite," Miroku chimed in, shooting Kagome a dazzling smile. Yura pouted and looked down at her lacy dress, "you look marvelous too darling."
.
"I believe Mrs. Yamamoto is wearing something very similar," Kikyo commented towards Kagome. She sighed and sat down in her seat as Hojo did nothing to defend her. Inuyasha really didn't like this guy.
.
"It's a very classy look Kagome," why did he say that? What was he thinking? He wanted nothing to do with this girl, why did he have to go and compliment her. She looked up startled at him, a faint blush coloring her cheeks.
.
"Thank you," she mumbled looking down at the table. One of the waiters came and informed them the speech was about to start and the other three excused themselves and returned to their table. The lights dimmed as Naraku, Zuko's vice president, took the stage and began a long dull speech. Inuyasha's blood boiled just hearing his voice, he couldn't even look at him. Instead he watched Kagome, who was staring blankly at the stage. He could clearly see how bored she was with the speech. It wasn't very original and sounded more like the history of the company rather then a tribute to Zuko and Hojo the first.
.
"Isn't that the guy?" Miroku leaned in to whisper to Inuyasha. He only nodded, glancing at Kikyo. She had a look of total admiration on her face as she listened intently to Naraku's words, a blissful smile on her face. He growled low in his throat, causing Rin to give him an odd look. He offered an apologetic smile before looking down at his empty plate. When would the food be served?
.
Finally his speech ended and everyone started to applaud. He made his way off the stage and over to the family table. He shook hands with both honored guests, and leaned down to whisper something to Kikyo. Inuyasha swallowed hard, trying to force down his anger as he watched her smile up at him and place a hand on his arm. She noticed him looking and quickly removed her hand, giving him a soft smile.
.
"I hate that guy," Rin muttered before brightening up as the waiters started to bring out their food. Inuyasha looked at her questionably.
.
"You know him?" she looked at him as she started stabbing at her salad with vengeance.
.
"Yeah, we all do. He tried seducing Kagome away from Hojo once, right after graduation," his eyes darted over to Kagome, but she wasn't paying attention. She was just poking at her salad in a daze.
.
"What happened?" Rin took a sip of her drink before turning to face him.
.
"They went out once, but it was horrible. Tried forcing Kagome into all these things she didn't want to do," sneaking a glance at Kagome she continued, "Hojo had gone away for a few months, his father had taken him on a business trip and Kagome was very lonely so he tried using that against her. Tried getting her to take drugs and drink with him every night, it only lasted a little over two weeks and nothing ever happened between them. The last night he tried forcing himself on her, boy if you think she's defenseless you should see her use her right hook, it's amazing!" Inuyasha's eyes widened and the anger he had for Naraku was growing into something more. How dare he try to defile that perfection. Why do I keep thinking like that about her? He looked at Kagome, the anger still raging inside him. He never thought he'd hate someone this much.
.
"I think we need something stronger then champagne," he looked at Miroku who as swirling the last bit of his drink around in the bottom of his glass, clearly bored out of his mind.
.
"Oh hey Kaggie!" she flinched at the nick name Sango called her, "have you finished the design yet?" she smiled at Sango.
.
"I did! It looks amazing, best power suite you'll find," Sango woop'd and took another sip of her drink.
.
"I forgot you did designs, do you happen to design any men's clothing?" Miroku leaned forward a little, putting himself closer to Sango, who tried to scoot away but found she had no room to do so.
.
"Not usually," she stabbed at her salad again, "like Hojo said it's a female retail store, I don't get a lot of men there. Sometimes I'll get a couple coming in for a special occasion and will want something that's semi matching."
.
"Do you have any of your designs in catalogs or anything like that?"
.
"No, nothing like that. Just sell them in my own store," Kagome answered finally nibbling on a leafy green.
.
"You know, you should make your own catalog for your store, Inuyasha here could even do the photography," Inuyasha glared at Miroku as he smacked him on the back.
.
"You're into photography?" Sango asked.
.
"Yeah," he muttered taking sudden interest in his salad, only to find a waiter removing it and placing his main course in it's place.
.
"He's more then just into it, it's his whole world," Miroku informed them, "it's what he does for a living. He has his own photography business."
.
"You didn't strike me as the photographer type," he looked up at Kagome's soft words. She had a slightly confused look in her eyes. Maybe she thought he was another corporate loser just like Hojo and Kikyo's father.
.
"Well I didn't see you owning your own business," he instantly regretted it. His less then friendly tone earned him an angry glare from her. He could tell the girl was destined to be successful. She had the drive and the passion for it, she could open up her own candy shop and still be at the top.
.
"Let's not start please?" Rin interrupted before Kagome could reply. She shot Inuyasha a look but continued to stab at her salad, thinking of Inuyasha's face at the bottom of her plat.
.
"This steak is delicious!" and so dinner went on without much conversation.
.

.
Inuyasha sat at the bar with Miroku, who had Yura draped over his lap. Kikyo had retired saying she had a headache. If Naraku hadn't been sitting at one of the table further into the bar he would have accused her of cheating on him again. Part of him wanted to walk in a find her with him again, he wanted to rip the man's face off. Also deep down he was starting to rethink his decision to stay with her. Things had fizzled between them lately, even before Naraku came into the picture. The spark was missing now, even in bed. It was routine for him, right down to the morning wake up calls to the small arguments and what was suppose to be their great make up sex. Nothing surprised him anymore. Then it didn't help he could have sworn he got butterflies every time he saw Kagome, who was currently sitting at a small table having a discussion with Hojo.
.
He could only hear bits and pieces of the conversation, there was to many people talking to zone in on only their conversation. He caught Kikyo's name a few times, and by the look on her face she wasn't pleased to be discussing her. Suddenly Hojo glared at her and stood up, walking away from her. Her face was crest fallen but she didn't go after him. He watched her sigh back into her chair, twiddling with a napkin. Waiting a few minutes he moved to join her, ignoring the glare she gave him.
.
"Can I help you?" she nearly snapped at him. Her eyes were glassy looking, he couldn't tell if they were unshed tears or from the amount of champagne she had consumed.
.
"I saw him leave you alone, you've had a lot to drink, you shouldn't be left alone," he answered while pushing a glass towards her.
.
"I've had to much to drink yet you're shoving a rum and coke at me?"
.
"It's just coke."
.
"Bull, I saw the bartender make it," he rose an eyebrow at her.
.
"So you were watching me?" he chuckled as she blushed again. Her blush did things to him. She was innocent still, not tainted like Kikyo was. Why are you comparing them?
.
"Well you were watching me, or you wouldn't have known when Hojo left."
.
"I never denied watching you," she looked up at him startled. He had had to much to drink as well. He shouldn't be sitting here. I should go, she can take care of herself. His eyes wondered from her face, down her neck past her collar bone, to the barest hint of cleavage her dress exposed. He grinned as she shuddered.
.
"You're a pervert you know that right?" she made a move to leave but his hand shot out and grabbed her wrist. It was as if he had been hit with lightening. A tingle zinged up his arm as she stared down at him.
.
"I'm sorry," he released her arm, his hand still numb from the contact. It's just the alcohol. He could vaguely remember feeling it when he was drunk with her last time, "please sit down." She hesitated for a moment before smoothing her dress under her and sitting down. The bottom of her skirt puffed up around her, it almost looked like it could swallow her whole.
.
"Why aren't you with Miroku? Or even Kikyo?" her eyes darted around looking for the offending girl.
.
"She had a headache, and well Miroku is a little preoccupied," he glanced over his shoulder and snickered as Miroku sent him a pleading look. He had had enough of Yura but he left him there to deal with it, "where are your friends?"
.
"Not really sure, they kind of disappeared when Hojo asked to speak with me," she reached out snatching the drink he had offered her earlier, nearly draining it in one sip. His eyebrows shot up as she wiped her mouth with the back of her hand with a sigh,
.
"Exactly how much have you had to drink?" she shot him a look.
.
"Not enough," she finished it off and leaned back in her chair again. Her eyes wondered the bar, stopping to linger on certain things. Inuyasha's eyes never left her face. Something was different about her, she almost look defeated. "So May 29th huh?" he gave her a confused look as she looked back at him.
.
"What are you talking about? May 29th?" suddenly she gave him an angry look.
.
"You're wedding day, Kikyo told Hojo today that was when you two were going to get married. That's only in a few months, actually, you want to know what's even funnier Inuyasha? That's the same day Hojo and I are suppose to be getting married. We've had that day planned for almost this whole past year, now since Kikyo wants to get married that day Hojo is demanding we change the date," Inuyasha was having a hard time following, and the look of anger that was becoming clearer in her eyes was confusing him even more, "that day is very important to me did you know that? Ha I'm sure you did, Kikyo knows everything about me because Hojo just doesn't know how to shut up," the waiter brought her a ruby red drink, leaving her with a wink, "It's really one of his flaws, he shares everything with that little twit." she paused to drink.
.
"I'm still not following," she rolled her eyes as she slammed her drink down on the table and leaned in towards him.
.
"You're as impossible as her you know that? It makes sense you two are together," she downed the rest of her drink. How did she manage to finish that so fast? She leaned in closer, "you see I thought you were better then her, especially after I told you how she has to ruin everything for me that day at brunch. I know you know why I want to get married on that day, Hojo said he told you both, so my only question is how could someone who is twice as decent as Kikyo be ok with her doing that to me?"
.
"The day your father proposed to your mom right?" there was a slight pinched around her eyes, "I haven't even proposed to Kikyo, and I wasn't planning on it either." Should he be telling her this? Probably not, but there was something in her voice that made him trust her, "I'm actually thinking we're going to break up here soon. You see that scum bucket over there," he jerked his head towards Naraku, "I caught them in bed together the other day...that night that you and I..." she blushed, looking down, "Kagome," he raised her chin so he could look into her eyes, "I wouldn't do that to you, Kikyo won't be getting married on that day, it'll be your special day." How much had he had to drink? He couldn't quite remember anymore, all he knew was her skin was so soft and silky against his palm as he cupped her cheek. It felt like she was looking right through him.
.
He could feel himself leaning in towards her, her eyes widening slightly, her breath coming out a little faster. He could hear her heart beating frantically in her chest. Their lips barely brushed, and he closed his eyes as the same electricity that ran through his arm sparked at his lips. How could he not remember doing so much more with her that night? She was perfection.
.
"Inuyasha!" they jerked away from each other as a disheveled Miroku walked towards them. Yura was no where to be seen, but her lipstick was rubbed all over Miroku's face. He sat down at the table with them, forcing them further apart. "I'm considering breaking it off with her, that girl has issues!"
.
"You were never really with her," Inuyasha said waving down a waiter, ordering them all drinks. Kagome was looking around again, the blush from earlier long faded away. Miroku waved his hand around, clearly more intoxicated then he was at dinner.
.
"Good point, oh look there are your friends!" Kagome looked up as Sango and Rin made their way over to their now overly crowded table, both swaying and giggling.
.
"Kagome!" Rin squealed plopping herself on her lap, wrapping her arms tightly around her friend's neck while Sango pulled up another chair, "Where's that fiance of yours?"
.
"Went to bed," the drinks arrived and Kagome eyed them greedily. Rin took a sip of Kagome's before passing it to her, receiving a glare from her, Rin just giggled.
.
"You know what? I feel very third wheelish right now!" Rin exclaimed suddenly, "I think I shall retire as well!" she attempted to get off of Kagome but started to fall flat on her face.
.
"Whoa!" Kagome steadied her, not as dizzy as she should have been, "let's all just go to bed ok?"
.
"I'm so not tired though!" Sango cried, sneaking away Kagome's abandoned drink. Miroku moved around the table to start up a conversation with Sango, who was eying the startling smears of red on his cheeks.
.
"I'll help you with her," Inuyasha stood, taking Rin from Kagome. She glanced back over at Sango and Miroku but they didn't seem to notice that they were leaving. Walking a few feet ahead of Inuyasha they made their way to Rin and Sango's room. Rummaging through Rin's purse she pulled out the key and began working on the lock.
.
"Stupid key," she mumbled as she finally was able to unlock the door. Inuyasha waltz in and put Rin on the bed, she had passed out on the way to the rooms. Kagome quickly stumbled to find a bottle of aspirin and grabbed two bottles of water from their fridge and left it on the bedside table for them in the morning.
.
"Let's get out of here," Kagome fought the blush that creeped up on her cheeks. Those were apparently the same words that got her in such a predicament last time.
.
"Yeah, lets," he trailed her down the hall. She was tense the entire trip to their neighboring rooms. The feeling of his eyes on her back made her shudder, and the thought of what would happen once they reached their rooms was wrecking havoc on her nerves. She was an engaged woman! She shouldn't be thinking about the what if's with another man. Glancing over her shoulder as they neared their rooms she made eye contact with him. Something in his eyes tightened things low in her stomach. Hojo had never looked at her like that. Inuyasha stared her down like she was prey and she was being hunted, like he wanted to eat her. She stopped in front of her room, turning to look at him, eying his door right next to her's.
.
"Kagome," his voice was barely a whisper. She looked up at him through dark eyelashes, a shy smile crossing her face. He reached up, his fingers caressed her cheek, the trailed down her jaw to her neck, over her shoulder and he suddenly gripped her arm. Kagome gasped as he yanked her to him, heat rushed through her as her body was molded against his. "I've never felt this before."
.
"I...I don't know what your talking about," she managed to squeak out. Lies. She felt it too, the unbearable reaction her body had every time they barely touched, and now with her entire body pressed against her she was almost drunk off the sensation. No Kagome, you're drunk off the alcohol you consumed all night long trying to forget about the amazing piece of art work who was sitting across from me at the dinner table.
.
"Don't lie Kagome, I know you feel it," his lips brushed hers with every word, but never fully made contact. Kagome's knees buckled and he was forced to hold her tighter. Suddenly her eyes widened, "what's wrong?"
.
"Kikyo," his brow creased, "behind you." suddenly Inuyasha was yanked away from her, causing her to stumble and her body ache form the sudden lack of contact.
.
"What are you doing Inuyasha!" her indigo eyes turned on Kagome, "how dare you try and kiss him! Wait until Hojo finds out about this, his perfect little Kagome, the cheater."
.
"Kikyo don't," she turned back to Inuyasha with something close to a snarl.
.
"Oh I will Inuyasha! She's ruined my life for years, I will not let her steal you from me! You're mine!" something snapped in Kagome. I ruined her life? She narrowed her eyes at Kikyo. How dare she. Reaching out she grabbed a fist full of Kikyo's hair, and pulled. Kikyo let out a shriek of pain and Inuyasha's eyes bulged.
.
"I ruined your life!" with more strength then she thought she had Kagome flung Kikyo against the wall, "you've done nothing but make me miserable since I met you Kikyo! What did I ever do to you? Ever since we were freshmen you've tried your hardest to be the most evil, rude, insulting bitch in my life, well congratulations! You've won!" Kagome was close to tears as she stared down at Kikyo, who was pressing herself against the wall, eyes wide in horror. Kagome stopped, breathing hard and glared down at Kikyo, "you're a waste of time." she turned around and gasped as she smacked into someone. Hojo stared down at her, confusion in his eyes.
.
"Kagome what is going on?" his eyes darted from Kikyo to Inuyasha and then back to her, "what did you do to Kikyo?"
.
"She was kissing Inuyasha!" Really? That's all she could say. Kagome glared over her shoulder at Kikyo then looked back up at Hojo.
.
"Almost kissing," she mumbled, "Hojo I need to go to bed." everything was spinning. The last few drinks they had had were starting to effect her. Her body was numb with the adrenilne, and she knew that would wear off soon and the guilt over what she had done with set in. Not only had she almost kissed Inuyasha, again, but she also assulted her fiance's cousin. Who knows, maybe she wasn't engaged anymore.
.
"Kagome I really think we should talk about this," he reached out to her but she just swatted her hand away, giving him a stern look.
.
"I don't feel good Hojo, now is not the time. I'm sorry," she shoved past them and into her room. Locking the door behind her, she leaned against the door, taking a deep breath she slid down, knees drawn up to her chest. What had she done? With that thought she passed out.
