He walked through the white corridors of the hospital halls. He paused to smiled only for a moment when a human doctor told a crying family that their baby was dead. He was in the maternity ward and his deep scars from battle turned heads. They didn’t question him though, he was the general director after all. The gods only knew why he choose the particular occupation to live a normal life, maybe because of the power over life, he loved the power. Now that power was in danger, he was in danger. They would come and kill him at any moment, but he couldn’t let them win. He would never let them have it. Over the past five hundred years, he has kept it safe it kept him powerful. But they had more power then even his precious and he had to admit, that for the first time in his life, he was afraid.
So he continued through the halls that he knew so well. He stopped at the nursery and spied the tiny bundles that screamed and cooed. There was only one he wished to see, he narrowed his reddish brown eyes at the silent baby. She was off in her little corner, the pink spiritual energy radiated off her. He smiled, the tiny newborn had no idea.
He walked towards the child who felt the presence and to his surprise the child let out a small growl.
“You are just as your mate, so wonder he took to you so well.” The doctor sneered. He reached out and pulled off the child’s blanket. Then slowly and almost painfully he reached into his coat and pulled out his precious, a jewel glowing with dark energy.
“Keep it safe, my sweet. Until I can claim it once more.” He cupped the jewel in his palm and placed it on the now crying baby’s stomach. He gritted his teeth as he felt wild spiritual energy flow through his hand. The jewel was being purified and when he lifted his hand the jewel was gone.
“Dr. Onigumo?” A young nurse came up behind him. She seemed frightened and he knew why.
“Yes,” he bit out angrily, angry at his own mortality.
“There are some strange people here to see you, I told them you were busy but they insisted.”
“Yes, I know I felt them for a while now.” He smiled.
“You felt them?” She asked.
The doctor turned and began to walk away. “Never mind. I’m on my way.” The nurse bowed and quickly left. Dr. Onigumo turned back to the baby and gave her a wicked grin. “Till we meet again, Kagome.” The baby practically glowed with amazing power.
Naraku turned and went to his death.
Mr. And Mrs. Higurashi didn’t know what to make of the strange people that stood in their home. They were huddled close on the couch and Mr. Higurashi tried to comfort his wife as the strange man with golden eyes, and long silver hair and two triangular dog ears on top of his head held his newborn daughter. A woman a little younger than the man took the baby and smiled. The woman had silver hair and black ears with midnight strands that framed her face, she was thin and had a happy round face. Her golden eyes sparkled as she looked down on the baby.
“Mother, you weren’t lying when you said you were a tiny baby.” She inspected the child and found what she was looking for. The golden eyed woman placed her hand on the smiling baby’s side. She felt the demonic and spiritual energy flow from her heart to her hand. “I hope this helps. Please don’t let him win this time. We miss you and Dad.”
“Kani?” The man said softly. “Come on, give her back to her Mother. We have to go.”
“Okay, Sesshoumaru nii-chan.” Kani carefully put the child back in her crying Mother’s waiting arms.
“Please take care of your child.” Kani said softly, “she will do great things.”
Mrs. Higurashi nodded at the strange siblings and watched as they began to leave. “Wait!” She stopped them. “Please tell me who you are?”
Kani touched her brother’s shoulder and turned back to Mrs. Higurashi. She knelt next to the Mother and smiled warmly. “My name is Kanime, my Mother called me Kani. And I happen to know that fifteen years from now, this little girl will go on the most amazing adventure. And I also now that you will support her in whatever decision she makes.”
“Your not human? Are you?” Mrs. Higurashi smiled faintly.
Kani smiled brightly and winked. She leaned in and whispered something faint in the Mother’s ear. Then she and Sesshoumaru disappeared from the home. Mrs. Higurashi was in shock and didn’t hear for husband calling for her. Finally Mrs. Higurashi snapped back to reality.
“What did she say to you?” Her husband asked.
“She-she said thank you, grandmother. For raising a great Mom.” Mrs. Higurashi couldn’t believe those words were coming out of her mouth.
“That means...” Mr. Higurashi began.
“It means that Kagome will have beautiful children.” Mrs. Higurashi looked down on her child and gave her a silent promise. ‘When it’s time, I promise to let you go.’
25 years later...
Kanime watched as the brutal Naraku charged at her parents. Her silver haired father slashed at the evil hanyou taking off his arm and the shikon no tama it held. Naraku screamed out in pain causing Kani’s older brother to cover her ears. She placed her hands over his and closed her eyes shut. She heard the muffled sounds of her father yelling at her mother. Kani couldn’t stand it anymore she opened her eyes to see Naraku standing over her mother’s lifeless body. Naraku laughed as he held the silver haired inu by the neck, his life slowly draining from his body.
“Did you forget, Inuyasha? The jewel is now under my control completely. Midoriko was destroyed by the demons inside.
Suddenly Kanime’s voice rang out. “MOMMY!! Get up please.” Inuyasha looked over to see his daughter kneeling besides her dead Mother. Inuyasha fought harder to get free and protect his children to no avail. Kanime was lost and didn’t know what to do. Then as if hearing a voice of a older woman Kamine touched her Mother’s side and touched the jewel. Inuyasha was brought back to the conscious world by a blinding light. Naraku dropped the hanyou in shock.
“No, this isn’t happening!” Naraku screamed as the purifying light wiped him from the earth. Kamine shook as the spiritual energy course within her veins. She has never before displayed any of her mother’s attributes until now. She saw her father crawl next to his mate and fall against her. Sesshoumaru ran to his father and cried over him. Kanime was in shock that her mother was dead and her father was following her.
“Daddy? Your really strong. Your never going to die are you?” Kanime asked strongly.
Inuyasha felt a tear slip from his eye and he reached up to stroke his little girl’s cheek. He was silent as his eyes slid closed for the last time.
“But they promised they would never leave us.” Kanime cried against her brother’s shoulder.
Mrs. Higurashi thought of her daughter’s life in the feudal era, she had hoped she and her children were safe. She remembered the difficult goodbye when her daughter found out she was pregnant. Kagome knew that her children would be poked and prodded by the human doctors. She supported Kagome’s decision for she knew it was coming. Mrs. Higurashi was lost in thought she collided quite roughly into a hard body. She found herself on her butt and looking up at a strange woman. Her hair was silver with black strands around her face. She wore a pageboy cap that had two bumps jutting out the top. The woman looked down and helped the fallen lady up. She apologized and picked up the groceries. Mrs. Higurashi was in shock when she came face to face with this woman from the past.
“Wha-What happened to her?” Mrs. Higurashi always had hopes of seeing this woman again to have her questions answered.
She could see the hidden ear twitch under the hat and the woman stood and faced the older woman. “What happened to who?” She asked.
“You are Kani, your mother is Kagome. I remember you from twenty five years ago.” Mrs. Higurashi said urgently.
“I’ve never met you before Ma’am.” Kani cocked her head confused. “But how did you know my Mother? She died a long time ago. That isn’t possible for you to know her.”
Mrs. Higurashi sighed and looked away. “I had always hoped, that some miracle could...”
“You remind me of her.” Kani smiled. “I don’t know how, but I do believe that you knew her somehow.” Kani stepped closer and took a experimental sniff in the older woman’s direction. “I thought so. But how is that possible, your human. My mother died 475 years ago, but you are my grandmother, ne?”
“It’s a long story.” Mrs. Higurashi held her groceries close and turned towards her home. “Come on, I’ll tell you what I know and you can tell me about my daughter’s life after we said goodbye.”
“Okay...obaa-san.” Mrs. Higurashi gasped at first then smiled.
Kani followed Mrs. Higurashi to the shrine with a smile. She hadn’t had any ties to the past except her brother, now all her questions will be answered.
After Kani finished the story about the final battle with Naraku she added. “If I had the skills I posses now, I could have healed them before it was too late, but I was young and my miko powers had just then developed, I don’t know how, but I just knew to touch my Mother’s side.”
Mrs. Higurashi was a mixture of emotions throughout Kani’s tale. Something plagued her though. “What of the jewel my daughter fought so hard for.”
Kani smiled and reached into her shirt, she pulled out a jewel glowing with brilliant energy. “My brother, Sesshoumaru and I take turns every fifty years protecting it.”
Mrs. Higurashi pondered this for a moment, “do you have it now?”
“H-hai.” Kanime said nervously as she clutched her hidden necklace.
“The well!” The older woman exclaimed excitedly. “Kagome and Inuyasha used it to get back and forth. You could use the jewel go back and save them.”
Kanime’s eyes widened. During all her years, she never knew her mother’s secret. “Will it work?” Kanime’s heart filled with hope.
“There’s only one way to find out.” Mrs. Higurashi stood happily. She led the nervous hanyou miko to the well and watched as she sat on the edge. The youkai looked back for words of encouragement.
“I know you can do it. Your parents were the strongest people I knew.” Mrs. Higurashi smiled.
Kanime perked up and smiled. “Arigato, Obaa-san.” Kanime winked and turned around to jump. Mrs. Higurashi smiled sadly as blue light shot up out of the well and then there was silence.
“Bye, dear.” Mrs. Higurashi sighed. “Please let us meet again.” She stood on the steps of the musky shrine until night fall.
Kanime ran towards the scent of blood, her parent’s blood. She paused when she spotted the clearing she grew up in. She was breathless as she relived the beauty of it all. Now it was all concrete. Two children were frantically searching for something.
“Nii-chan! Where is it! We can wish them back!” Kanime screamed.
“I don’t remember this.” Kanime said to herself. “ I remember wanting to wish them back, but we had the jewel. Kanime felt a pulse in her hand. “I have it, I have the jewel. I understand now.” Kanime swallowed hard as she approached the frantic children. Young Kanime looked up at the approaching figure. She was in shock seeing such a familiar woman come towards them. Until she saw what was in her hand and where she was about to step.
“NO STOP!” Both siblings screamed out. But it was too late. Future Kanime landed in the remains of Naraku. The jewel shool with power as the remains glowed and exploded from the ground. Before the future youkai could react she was impaled by a partially healed tentacle. Naraku laughed at took the jewel from her weak hands. The children watched in shock as Naraku smiled evilly at them and tossed the strange woman to the side.
“My power, my glorious power. I will return to finish you when I am fully restored.” With that threat the evil hanyou disappeared.
Young Kanime was in shock as she watched the older wounded girl crawl towards her parents. But it was clear she wouldn’t make it. Naraku got her in the heart. Kanime could feel the spiritual energy the dying girl was trying to use. But she was too weak. Kanime and Sesshoumaru knelt next to the woman.
“I was a fool.” The woman cried gently as she felt her life drain from her body. “I tried to control fate...and I failed. I’m sorry, Chichi-ue...Haha-ue.”
“How are you?” Kanime asked.
The woman gasped and looked at the little hanyou. She looked back over at her parents, her father looked at peace the way he held her mother. They were together somewhere. She knew what had to be done and she didn’t have much time. She looked at the distraught siblings and told them as much as she could.
“I failed, but you won’t.” Kanime felt her last few breaths leaving her. “Her fifteenth birthday. Control fate.” Kanime took her last breath.
Young Kanime looked up at her brother. “What now, Nii-chan?”
Sesshoumaru stood up bravely and helped his little sister up. “We survive.”
Kagome Higurashi yelled out that she was leaving for school. She was geared up ready to go when she saw her brother calling out to the cat outside the well house. Golden eyes watched her closely from the old shrine.
“You know what will happen, don’t you Imouto-chan?” The man whispered.
The girl was quiet for a moment as she watched the cat at her feet. “We control fate, Nii-chan. It doesn’t control us.” Quickly she shooed the cat out of the shrine. As Kagome chastised her Brother and walked away from the well, Kanime and Sesshoumaru felt the magic of the well swell and die. They both looked at one another for the last time. “What happens to those who don’t exist?” Kanime asked as she began to fade away.
Sesshoumaru reached out as they began to feel weightless, he held his little sister close. “We’ll exist again, someday. It’s fate.”
Kagome paused when she heard childish laughter echo and disappear inside the well house. She shrugged and turned. As she passed the sacred tree she looked up when something shiny caught her eyes. She stopped and stepped closer, keeping her eyes trained on the flimsy object. It was a hair, a long silver hair. The moment she touch the curious object the thick tree truck covered with thick, old vines pulsed.
Kagome gasped...
