Nothing but darkness…

I could feel my body falling, unsupported, toward an unknown ground. My eyes slowly opened, but my surprise to what I saw was shortly replaced by despair. My hand, which I had raised in front of my eyes to start my usual nail inspection, had vanished! Either that or the darkness was too thick for it to be seen.

I couldn't hear the scream that I uttered, nor could I feel the hand that I pressed to my mouth. All my senses were dead. Until it appeared.

An ancient well, that seemed to exist before time itself. Beside it, a towering tree. No backdrop, nothing else. Only the well and the tree. Before long a blackened figure appeared, the shape growing more recognizable by the second. A girl of around fifteen, I would guess, was running toward both ancient items, a pack on her back. No colour in her clothing; her hair; or even her skin. Just a pure black silhouette. She jumped into the Well, which now seemed to be an important thing. A flash of blue light… and the picture vanished.

Nothing appeared for a couple minutes, and I began to relax. Then came the mist. Swirling in shades of pink and royal blue, it clouded my non-existent vision, and wormed its way into my dulled senses. Another flash and it was gone.

Back to nothingness once more.

I awoke with a start. My eyes snapped open to reveal a thatched roof through strands of ebony hair. I head a faint rustling beside me, and, out of habit called out for my mother. The voice that answered me wasn't expected, but it wasn't new. In fact, it sounded exactly like someone that I knew, but from somewhere totally different…

“How are ye, child?”

That sentence alone almost caused me to fall off the futon with surprise. I slowly shuffled into a sitting position, finally catching a glimpse of someone that I had only seen on T.V for many years. That old, wrinkled face and the straggly grey-ish hair. And then the miko garb. It was quite obvious who this was.

“K-Kaede?” I managed to croak out, my voice hoarse. I lifted one weak arm to my forehead, brushing away stray hairs from my eyes. On the outside, it was like my eyes were purposely playing tricks on me. But somehow I knew that this was real; that the old priestess, sister of Kikyou was real.

“How do ye know my name?” she demanded, her one eyes glaring at me with surprise. Or was it… suspicion? Moving closer, the old woman poked me, prodded me, and inspected me like one would a horse for sale. At last she stopped, allowing me time to answer her question.

“F-From T.V.” I finally said, after swallowing nervously a couple hundred times. “Where's Kagome? She's the character that I've most wanted to meet.”

“Ye know Lady Kagome?” Kaede answered the surprise in her voice evident. “Do ye happen to be from her era?”

“Yes and yes.” I answered honestly, staring at Kaede strangely. “Shouldn't it be obvious by my…” I trailed off, looking down at my clothing slightly. An old fashioned kimono, the style native to Feudal Japan. I had forgotten about the cultural festival today!

“Lady Kagome is out with InuYasha.” The old miko continued, ignoring my previous comment. “They should be back soon, so make ye self comfortable.”

By the shade of a cherry tree, the group was resting somewhat peacefully. After all, relaxing would be pretty difficult if you were busy tending to numerous injuries, along with fending off the random youkai that wandered in search of the Shikon Shards.

It just so happened that this particular tree was somewhere quite close by to where I was waiting, quite impatiently, for Kagome's return. InuYasha, being as concerned about Kagome as he always was, was sitting in the tree, sitting on guard. His injuries had already been tended, much to the insistence of Kagome, and he was ready to do what he did best: watch her from the safety of his tree.

“Hey, wench!” he called down, spotting her gathering together random branches from the ground. “What's for dinner?”

Note Center

Hey, and welcome to the first chapter of my newest fan fiction! No, my name is not actually Kuro. I changed it for privacy reasons =D

I'm not the best at first chapters, or really making anything of a decent length. So my chapters will be short; but my updates frequent. It also means that I'll be keeping the story going for longer! Remember to R&R, and make them meaningful! I don't like the short, choppy ones that pretty much only saw `plz update soon!' But I hate the random flames even more, though I haven't yet received one myself.
