Summary: Miroku reflects on his feelings for Sango and tries to steal a precious moment alone with her. This is my first InuYasha fic, so bear with me. ^_^

Miroku sat in his usual retiring position underneath a tree while everyone else began to wind down for the night. The night. There was something especially beautiful about the deep azure, coral and violet hues descending upon the waiting earth tonight. The stars were just beginning to twinkle in the sky, and just for a moment, everything seemed okay.

He looked above him and saw InuYasha staring off into the darkness…probably thinking about Kikyo or ruminating about how he was going to single-handedly destroy Naraku. Kagome, Shippo, and Kirara were resting peacefully while bundled together in a thick blanket just a few feet away from the fire. The restless flames twisted and contorted, causing their light to form pale shadows that caressed the faces of the sleeping miko and fox-demon child. The purity of their hearts was plainly visible in this light and caused a contented grin to creep onto Miroku's face.

One thing was missing. The one whose mere appearance could at once cause his heart to burn with an all-consuming inferno of passion, then freeze over into immobility whenever her life was in danger.

Sango.

He had to make sure that she was okay.

It was a bright night rich with sound as Sango sat quietly, contemplating the bitter twist her life had taken. It was on nights such as this that she felt a need to get away, to listen to the sounds of twilight. While the day was filled with her own duty of hunting down demons with her comrades, the night was filled with memories. She could still hear her father's instruction, her village's bustle, and the sound of her brother's laughter. It was during the evenings that she sought comfort. And tonight, she found solace in the stars.

As he walked through the thick underbrush, the sounds of the night embraced him. The symphony of the night wasn't overwhelming; in fact, the noises were pleasant. It reminded him of how important it was to make sure that Naraku and his minions didn't succeed in destroying the entire earth in their quest to gather the remaining fragmented shards of the Shikon No Tama.

Then he saw her. She was quietly sitting on a slightly raised hillside simply gazing at the stars.

I could feel it coming from a mile away.

When I opened up the door, I saw everything that I've been waiting for.

Close your eyes, I don't care what other people say.

Here underneath the stars,

Now Jupiter and Mars don't seem so far away.

"Okay, Miroku", he thought to himself. "Don't blow this by doing something vulgar. I'm just going to see if she needs anything, and try to sit near enough to inhale the enchanting fragrance of her hair."

He sat down next to her and merely watched her. She looked like she had a lot on her mind.

I want you to know,

you take my breath away

And it's been that way right from the start.

I didn't know how to tell you,

that I want to love you with every beat of my heart.

After a brief moment, she turned to look at him, and was surprised to see him staring at her with such an intense expression on his face.

"Hoshi-sama, is there something wrong?"

He shook his head slightly and slowly grinned. "No, Sango-sama. I was just thinking about how beautiful your eyes are when you get absorbed in your thoughts."

Sango faintly blushed and tried to shake off his compliment by remaining silent. Miroku looked at her with a pleading expression as he contemplated his next move.

"Whatever it is, Sango, won't you allow me to share it with you? I won't cut in unless you ask."

He held out his cursed hand in invitation. The rosary beads were tightly draped against his skin, and caused the material that cloaked his palm to pucker slightly. She blinked for a moment in disbelief that the normally lecherous monk hadn't tried to make a move on her yet. But then, she remembered when she had first really met him, the Miroku who fought alongside her, who protected her when her guard was down. The handsome monk who could lighten her mood, and yet stay concentrated on the task before them. It was the Miroku she could trust with every beat of her heart.

Take my hand

Don't be afraid.

Don't go, I want you to stay.

Just relax your mind.

I promise that tomorrow will be just like today.

She nodded and gently grasped his hand, entwining their fingers together. Suddenly, she no longer felt so alone. She felt that she could not only share this moment with him, but the rest of her life as well.
