Ch. 10
Kagome was lost in a sea of sensation, her entire being consumed by Sesshomaru. He pulled her slowly to her feet, never breaking their kiss. She felt his hands on the small of her back, his touch sending a shiver up her spine.
Sesshomaru knew the effect he was having on Kagome. It pleased him to know that a mere touch from him was enough to elicit such a response. If only she knew exactly what that did to him. To actually hold her in his arms, taste her lips…it was more than any mere mortal could endure.
Kagome let her hands entangle with Sesshomaru's bone-white locks. As the silky strands slipped through her fingers, she suddenly had a sense of déjà vu.
I promise this won't be the last time we meet.
Kagome felt a tightening in her chest. The words put an immediate damper on her mood. Dead or alive, Inuyasha had a compelling hold on her heart. She placed her hands on Sesshomaru's chest, pushing away slightly. A flash of disappointment flashed through his golden gaze before being replaced by the usual impassiveness.
“What's stopping you now, Kagome?” He asked. Kagome was tired of using Inuyasha as an excuse, but he wasn't an excuse. He was the reason, the only reason why she couldn't open up.
“Sesshomaru, I -”
He surprised her by kissing her softly on the lips. Brushing his thumbs across her cheeks, he said, “I'm not giving up on you, Kagome.”
Kagome couldn't express how much those words meant to her. Curling her hands in his shirt, she brought him to her and returned the kiss, relaying all the gratitude and affection she felt for him in that one kiss.
Without warning, Sesshomaru picked Kagome up and sat her on the table, his hands caressing her hips. Kagome didn't have time to react as he moved in between her legs, his hands traveling slowly up her body to brush the hair away from her neck.
“I just want you to not think about anything for just…a…moment,” Sesshomaru murmured. Kagome shivered, his breath warm against her neck. He inhaled her scent, finding the mixture of Kagome's own freshness, mingled with the vanilla body oil she used, intoxicating. While he held her head with one hand, the other moved down to her leg, massaging it gently.
“Sesshomaru…” Kagome breathed, unable to look away from his commanding gaze. What she saw there made her heart race. In his gaze, she saw the promise of all the things she was afraid to face, all the passion and excitement she'd shut away. Those golden eyes looked deep down into her, twin pools of unfulfilled need. Kagome would bet her life that Sesshomaru saw the same reflected in her own eyes.
“What do you want, Kagome? Don't think, just say.”
Kagome let her head fall back as Sesshomaru placed light kisses along the arch of her neck. “You,” she answered breathlessly. Her mind had long ago switched to autopilot. She didn't care that things were moving way too fast or that she wasn't in the right frame of mind to make rational decisions.
Luckily, fate intervened in the form of Sesshomaru's ringing cell phone. He cursed under his breath before digging into his pocket and producing the small intrusion.
“Hello?” He all but barked into the receiver. Kagome tugged on the hem of her shirt, suddenly embarrassed by her behavior. Her cheeks reddened at the thought that they'd been seconds away from going at it right here in the middle of the dining room.
“Oh god!” She muttered, sliding from the edge of the table. Sesshomaru glanced at her, his brows furrowed. Kagome looked away from him, flipping on the light switch. A wave of relief washed over her. At least with the lights on, she wouldn't be as tempted to rip Sesshomaru's shirt off and physically assault him.
“Are you sure this can't wait until morning?” Sesshomaru asked, running a hand through his hair. Of course his secretary would call him at the most inconvenient time to inform him that she'd accidentally erased vital information from his computer and needed him at the office ASAP. Rin definitely wouldn't be winning any Secretary of the Year awards any time soon.
With a resigned sigh he replied, “Fine. I'll be there shortly.” He flipped the phone closed and dropped it back into his pocket. Shaking his head in disbelief, he threw his hands into the air.
“That woman will be the death of me.”
Kagome looked at him questioningly. She'd only heard his end of the conversation, which consisted mainly of monosyllables.
“I have to go back down to the office because my nitwit of a secretary has managed to screw up yet again.” Sesshomaru explained. He self-consciously straightened his shirt and tie.
“I'm sorry if I pushed you too far,” he said, his voice low. Kagome was surprised by the apology. Sesshomaru Haturo wasn't one to do so often. She smiled shyly, clasping her hands behind her back. “You didn't do anything I didn't want you to.”
He studied her a few moments, his expression stoic. Kagome hated when he looked at her like that. It was impossible for her to determine what he was thinking and feeling. She fidgeted nervously, twisting her hands. He seemed as if he was waiting for her to say something, but she didn't know what he wanted to hear.
“Well, um, I guess I won't see you again until tomorrow morning,” she commented, the silence becoming too heavy to bear. With a dismissive shake of his head, Sesshomaru turned away from her.
“There's too much work that needs to be done and I doubt I'll finish it by tomorrow morning. I won't be home until tomorrow evening.” Kagome took a step toward him, reaching a hand out. She hesitated before letting her hand fall to her side.
“But what about a shower or change of clothes?” She asked with a hint of disappointment. She felt as if he couldn't wait to get away from her. A large part of her knew that it was her own fault if he wanted to stay away.
Sesshomaru glanced back at her. “I'll wash up at the office. As for clothes, I'll send my secretary by sometime in the afternoon to retrieve some.” Without saying another word, he left, leaving Kagome to ponder just how she was going to fix the mess she'd gotten herself into.
Much later, Kagome found sleep hard to come by. She glanced over at the glowing red numbers, letting out a huge sigh. It was now three-thirty, exactly eight hours since Sesshomaru had left and Kagome was still agonizing over their encounter.
She'd contemplated going over to his office to talk things out, but knowing Sesshomaru, he'd probably dismiss her as soon as she stepped foot in the building. Male pride was a tricky thing to understand and under the circumstances, Kagome decided time was what Sesshomaru needed.
In the meantime, Kagome was left to sort out her confused feelings. With sleep nowhere in sight, she had plenty of time to do that. Rolling over on her side, she stared out the bedroom window, watching the trees blow gently in the early morning breeze.
Why couldn't her life be simple like other people's? Why couldn't she have a normal family with a mother who wasn't so concerned with appearances and a father who didn't bury his head in the sand when the slightest hint of trouble reared its head? And why couldn't she forget about the past and focus on the future?
Kagome sighed, closing her eyes. Why ask why? A voice whispered in her head. You can't control the path your life is destined to take. And just where was that? From the looks of it, it was somewhere she didn't want to go. She rolled to the other side, frustrated by her thoughts.
The funny thing about life, the voice said, is that once in a while it throws you a surprise or two.
Kagome frowned and opened her eyes. “It definitely throws you a surprise or two.” She whispered, sitting up slowly. Kagome wasn't startled by the figure standing just inside the doorway. Even as he stood staring in at her, she couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of security by his presence.
Swinging her feet over the side of the bed, she approached the figure slowly. He watched her intently, his eyes glowing bright in the darkness.
“You're here,” she whispered. Kagome stepped in front of him and reached out hesitantly. Even though she'd tried to convince herself so many times for the past couple of weeks that she'd imagined him, she'd still held onto the belief that he'd been real. Something about him was different, however. She hadn't noticed it before, but now she sensed it. His gaze was so hard…so cold.
“Inuyasha?”
His gaze touched on her for a second before moving elsewhere. “Room hasn't changed a bit,” he muttered. Everything was just as he'd left it, nothing moved or replaced. Oddly enough, he held no feelings of nostalgia for the room. He smirked.
“Isn't it funny how some things appear so pure and untouched but under the surface it's a whole other story?” He glanced at Kagome. “Don't you think?”
Kagome shrugged, shaking her head. “I don't know what you mean, Inuyasha.” She was bothered by his behavior. Knowing him the way she did, she knew he was upset, but she didn't know why.
“Are you sure you don't know what I mean, Kagome?” He asked, one eyebrow crooked. Kagome shook her head a little harder, her unease growing. Why was he acting like this all of a sudden?
Inuyasha took a step towards her, causing Kagome to take a step back. He reached out and grabbed her arm, dragging her to him. Kagome let out a small cry of surprise. “Inuyasha! What's wrong with you?”
“Do you like sleeping in my bed, Kagome?” Inuyasha continued taunting her, his voice low and menacing. He took another step forward, forcing Kagome back. “Did you ever fantasize about me lying next to you?”
Despite the situation, Kagome couldn't deny the effect Inuyasha was having on her. His dark words slid over her like droplets of scorching hot water, leaving her body scorching hot.
“Inuyasha, I-I -”
“Did you fantasize about me kissing you? Touching you?” Inuyasha took another step forward, causing Kagome to take a step back. She felt the back of her legs touch the edge of the bed. She glanced back, blushing. How many times had she imagined Inuyasha there beside her? Too many times to count.
Inuyasha wrapped one arm around her waist, bringing her flush against him. He gave her a hard look. “Did you want me to…” he let his gaze fall to her lips, focusing on their softness. “Make love to you, Kagome? Did you want me to be the first man inside of you?”
No matter how hard she tried, Kagome couldn't stop her body from trembling. Her mind turned to mush as she felt Inuyasha press against her, making his arousal known. She closed her eyes tightly, trying to fight the lust building inside of her. As much as she'd dreamed of this moment, she didn't want it to happen like this.
“Please, Inuyasha!” Kagome whispered, pushing her hands against his chest. He ignored her plea, instead holding her closer. “I love to hear you beg, Kagome.” Inuyasha murmured as he lowered her to the bed. He ignored the part of him that screamed what he was doing was wrong. It had started as a game, his ego bruised after seeing Kagome in the arms of his brother, but now all he wanted to do was bury himself inside her and erase any feelings she might have for Sesshomaru.
Kagome felt as if she had no control over her limbs as Inuyasha ran his hands over her body, leaving a trail of fire in his wake. She tried desperately to open her mouth and tell him that this was wrong, but her body disobeyed her, becoming pliant and willing under his touch.
Inuyasha looked down into Kagome's face, seeing the play of emotions cross her beautiful features. At the moment, confusion and lust were the dominant emotions, the latter more prevalent. He smirked, taking a small amount of pleasure in tormenting her. In some small way, she deserves it, he told himself.
He bent down and kissed his way up the arch of her neck, stopping when he reached her lips. He hovered there, resisting the urge to kiss her. She stared back up at him, her eyes mirroring his desire.
“Say you want me to make love to you,” Inuyasha whispered, his eyes flashing. Kagome's mouth opened but no words came out. She did want Inuyasha to make love to her, it was all she'd ever wanted since she'd discovered her feelings for him, but he didn't seem like himself. She wanted the Inuyasha she'd fallen in love with.
“I-I can't.” Kagome stuttered, looking away from his intense gaze. She felt his anger roll over her like a heat wave. “Everything is so confusing right now…”
“You mean between you and Sesshomaru, right?” Inuyasha sneered. “Or is it that you'd rather have Sesshomaru here right now ready to fuck you?” With a sound of disgust, he moved away from her to sit on the edge of the bed.
Kagome was stunned into silence. How did he know about her and Sesshomaru? She sat up and stared at his back. “Have you been spying on me?”
“So you don't deny it?” Inuyasha accused, his body tensing. Kagome tried to come up with an excuse, but there was none. There was something between him and Kagome, but her feelings for Inuyasha were still as strong as ever, no matter how much she tried to deny it.
“It's true,” she whispered. She pulled her knees up to her chest. “You have to understand that this past year has been absolute hell for me. When I thought you died, I felt like dying too.” Kagome took a deep breath, holding back the tears. She needed to get it all out once and for all.
“I didn't talk to anybody, just going through the motions. I had no desire to live a life that didn't include you. So when I couldn't take it anymore, I came to the one place where I could still be close to you.” She glanced over at him, but he was still facing away from her.
“I came here, Inuyasha. I felt safe here, something I hadn't felt in a long time. And Sesshomaru…” She hesitated, trying to find just the right words to describe her feelings towards him. “He didn't treat me like everyone else did, like I was one breakdown away from the loony bin, although I felt like it most of the time. Sesshomaru helped me to see that life wasn't over for me, that I still had people who cared about me.”
“And he was one of those people?”
Kagome bit her lip, not wanting to cause Inuyasha any pain, but he deserved the truth. “Yes,” she admitted. “We've become closer since I've been here and I feel he cares for me.”
“And you?” Inuyasha asked, turning to look at her. “How do you feel about him?” He waited, not even noticing that he was holding his breath. Kagome crawled over to him and faced him, her legs folded beneath her. She took his hands in hers and placed them over her heart.
“In my life I've loved exactly one person,” she said, her voice trembling. “I live and breathe you, Inuyasha Haturo.”
Inuyasha refused to give in easily. “But you didn't answer my question, Kagome.” He yanked his hands away. “I saw you with Sesshomaru. What was that, a moment of weakness?”
“How much did you see?” Kagome asked hesitantly. “Everything,” he answered, looking away. She sighed, realizing what a mess she'd created. Wait a minute, she thought, I'm not the one who should feel bad here. He's been missing for an entire year and he thinks I owe HIM an explanation?
Kagome suddenly felt her anger flare, her eyes narrowing to tiny slits. “I'm not apologizing for that, Inuyasha.” She said forcefully. Inuyasha glanced at her, his expression registering surprise. He'd expected her to ramble on and on about how sorry she was, but instead she seemed mad.
“For all I knew you were dead and gone. Was I supposed to continue living the sad existence my life has become since you went missing? I'm not a robot, Inuyasha. I can't just shut my feelings on and off at will, no matter how much I tried.” She continued, her anger growing by the minute. “I'm not the one who needs to explain my actions, Inuyasha.”
Inuyasha sat in silence, listening to her sharp words. Although he didn't want to admit it, he knew she was right. It was selfish of him to expect answers from her when he'd given her none in return.
“You're right,” he said quietly, staring out the window. The sky was beginning to lighten gradually, the dark shadows not as abundant. He only had a few more hours until sunrise.
“You deserve to know the truth about what happened that night,” he said, turning to look at her. “So here goes…”
