Chapter 3: Tainted Love

Sunlight shone throughout her room, dancing over her eyelids. With a groan, Kagome carefully sat up. Her head pounded and her throat and mouth felt like they were stuffed with cotton. Lifting a hand to her head, she prayed the room would stop spinning sometime soon. Carefully lying herself back onto her soft bed, she sighed in relief. She was home. And her room stopped spinning.

Her bedroom door softly creaked open. Slowly turning her head in the direction of her opening door, she saw her mother, or rather three of her mom, carefully balancing a tray with a bowl, from which steam was rising, and a glass of water. Her mother smiled softly as she approached her daughter, but a worried frown still creased her forehead. Amazing how mothers could manage a reassuring smile and a worried frown all at once.

After she entered the room, she placed the tray down on the nightstand that sat next to Kagome's bed and gently placed a warm hand upon her daughter's forehead. "Good, your fever has broken," she murmured. Turning to the night table, she grabbed the glass of water and handed it to her daughter. "Here sweetie, drink this," she softly cooed.

"Mama," Kagome croaked, after she had finished her water. "How did I get here?" she asked.

A puzzled frown marred her mother's features momentarily, before she replied, "I was about to ask you the same thing sweetie. You had just left and then you suddenly showed back up less than a week later. We found you passed out on the back door step. What happened Kagome?" her mother asked.

`Oh boy, mothers sure know how to get to the point don't they,' Kagome thought before tears welled in her eyes. Lunging for her mother, Kagome wrapped her arms around her mother's waist and sobbed.

Confused, her mother gently began to run her fingers through Kagome's hair, while murmuring soothingly. She wouldn't press the issue for now. After Kagome fell back to sleep, her mother quietly left, taking the untouched soup and empty cup with her, sighing softly as she went.

Uttering a scream of rage, Kagome grabbed an empty glass from her night table and chucked it at the wall. He wouldn't leave her mind. He hovered there, lingering in her thoughts like a bad taste in her mouth and there was nothing she could do about it. God damn him. There was no escaping him. Even after two weeks!

//Sometimes I feel I've got to//

Small flames were licking at her body and furniture, burning everything they touched, when her mother entered the room. "Kagome!" her mother called sharply. At the sound of her mother's harsh call, Kagome snapped out of her thoughts causing the flames to vanish back to their origins. With a sigh, Kagome's mother entered the room. Sitting on the edge of the bed, she looked her daughter sternly in the eye before she sighed softly asking, "What happened back there Kagome?"

"Oh mama," Kagome moaned in anguish. There was no escaping this subject with her mother; she just knew it. Sooner or later, she would have to tell her mother everything that happened. Might as well be sooner. It needed to come out after all this time. With a sigh, Kagome closed her eyes and told her mother about Inuyasha's betrayal.

//Run away
I've got to//

"And then the next thing I knew I was in the courtyard of the shrine," Kagome concluded. With a sigh she cracked one eye open, to look her mother in the eye. "He betrayed me, mama. He was gunna turning me over to our worst enemy! For someone who's dead no less!" she cried, flames starting to form again.

"Kagome," her mother sighed softly, "You have to get a hold of yourself, first off. You're destroying your room."

With a gasp, Kagome looked around her room, noticing for the first time the scorched furniture. "I did this?" she tentatively asked.

"Yes, baby. You did. The seal on your powers is beginning to crack. It won't be long before your full power is unleashed and then they will find you," her mother said, a sense of foreboding surrounding and permeating her aura.

//Get away

From the pain that you drive into the heart of me//

"…You will turn her over to me, or Kikyou dies again. Either way you lose. Kikyou or Kagome, Inuyasha? Which will you choose?" Naraku's taunting voice called from the night air, echoing and bouncing off of the trees, making his voice seem as if it originated from nowhere.

For a moment Inuyasha looked uncertain. As he pondered his choice, a look of deep concentration marred his features. After a moment, he sighed heavily, and looked straight ahead. "I choose… Kikyou," he stated.

//The love we share
Seems to go nowhere//

From her position behind a tree, she doubled over. Her eyes squeezing shut tight. With those words, it felt as if someone had drove a stake through her heart. His decision rocked her to her very core. Her breath came short. All of those years, and all of her love for nothing.

"As you wish, Inuyasha," Naraku called. "Bring Kagome to me by tomorrow night," he laughed, as his voice slowly faded away. Her eyes opened wide at Naraku's parting. Her breath left her in an inaudible whoosh. She turned and ran. He heard her. He knew she was there!

//And I've lost my lights
For I toss and turn I can't sleep at night//

She had been tossing and turning. With a sharp cry, Kagome bolted upright in her bed. Tears streamed down her face. Collapsing upon her bed once more, she closed her eyes and tried to will the pain away. It had been two weeks and the pain was still fresh.

// Once I ran to you (I ran)//

"Inuyasha?" she called trapped in the void once more. "Where are you? I can't find you!" she cried, as she ran around aimlessly, carrying herself in circles. "Inuyasha!" she called out desperately.

//Now I'll run from you//

As she whirled around for the billionth time, she ran smack into his chest. Her arms came up instinctively, saving her nose from the harsh impact. His arms locked around her waist. "Inuyasha," she whispered. "I thought I had lost you," she sobbed.

//This tainted love you've given//

For a moment, he remained motionless. He was merely holding her gently. She relaxed in his arms. Then he began to laugh maliciously, his arms began to tighten their hold. It was quickly becoming painful. She struggled in vain. She could feel and hear her ribs begin to make some interesting popping noises.

Finally she unconsciously managed to gather some of her miko powers into her hands and blasted him in the chest. He quickly released her. As soon as she was free, she quickly scrambled to her feet and ran for all she was worth before he had a chance to recover. Then she fell. It was a seemingly bottomless pit.

//I give you all a girl could give you
Take my tears and that's not nearly all//

When she hit the bottom the landscaping changed. It wasn't merely a black void of complete and utter nothingness anymore. It changed and morphed into a grassy knoll with a forest beyond in all directions. Grey mountains could be distinguished in the distance to the north.

A sound was heard from the trees from the forest, from the north. Inuyasha burst forth landing a few feet in front of her. Slowly he made his way towards her. A seductive smile played upon his lips. It was something foreign for him. As he sauntered towards her, Kagome could feel her insides melting. How she would give anything to have him. He now stood in front of her. Gently, he placed a chaste kiss upon her lips.

//Tainted love
Tainted love//

A blast of ki shot from the south. Inuyasha transformed. The kiss became brutal, bruising. His hands began to roughly wander her body. They pushed and tugged at her shirt and skirt. She started to struggle. He bit into her lip. Blood flowed.

//Now I know I've got to
Run away//

The purity she infused in her blood quickly attacked his youkai, causing him to flinch back. Smoke curled from his lips. Her body began to glow as she subconsciously unleashed more of her power. Inuyasha yanked his hands back with a snarl. Smoke also curled from his singed palms. Releasing her powers, she knocked him down and ran.

//I've got to
Get away//

The landscape changed once more as she came to a small river. On the other side stood Kikyou. Staring at her for a moment, Kagome made to look at herself in the water. She saw Kikyou's reflection. She had become Kikyou. With a cry she shattered the image. Shards flew everywhere, cutting her hands and face.

//You don't really want any more from me
To make things right
You need someone to hold you tight
You think love is to pray
But I'm sorry I don't pray that way//

The landscape changed once more. She was in a room full of mirrors. Whirling around, all she saw was Kikyou, except in one mirror. That mirror faced the west. Inuyasha entered through an unseen door. "Kikyou," he called softly, making his way towards her.

She was pulled from her body, and placed in the mirror with her reflection. She was now a spectator. Inuyasha approached her body. Looking at her, reverence shining in his eyes. Kikyou stood before him. Kagome was trapped in the mirror. "NO! NO!" she called. "Inuyasha! Help me! I'm here!"

"Kikyou," he called.

"Inuyasha," she answered. "I want you to do something for me."

"Anything!"

"Break that mirror," she stated, pointing to the mirror Kagome was stuck in. If the mirror broke, Kagome would die. Kikyou would get her soul back. Inuyasha hesitated before he made his way towards the mirror.

With a cry of rage, Kagome's eyes flashed red, then black. The pitch reached deafening heights. The world shattered. She fell.

//Once I ran to you (I ran)
Now I'll run from you//

When she landed, she was in the middle of Tokyo. Something was stalking her. Looking suspiciously around her, all she saw was shadows. Something grabbed at her from behind. With a shriek she ran.

//This tainted love you've given
I give you all a girl could give you//

She ran blindly through the streets of Tokyo. She dodged over trash and various other obstacles. Inuyasha was chasing her, but this time there was also another force coupled with his. It was foreign and yet it felt familiar.

`Why me? After all I've done for him! This is how he repays me! Damn him,' she growled.

//Take my tears and that's not nearly all
Tainted love
Tainted love//

She tripped. Her ankle was badly damaged. It wouldn't support her. Looking up, she saw that he was standing a few feet away from her. When they made eye contact, he lunged for the kill. With a shriek, everything went black. The landscaping changed again. They were in the clearing by the well.

//Don't touch me please
I cannot stand the way you tease
I love you though you hurt me so//

Inuyasha was holding her close. This was just after his brother put that hole through his stomach. It was a mere memory, but Kagome still struggled to break free. Just being around him hurt her. She couldn't take this anymore. With a scream of pure agony she shattered that memory only to be replaced by another.

//Now I'm going to pack my things and go
Touch me baby, tainted love//

She was at the time where she first left because of Kikyou. But, unlike that time, once she left, she wouldn't come back again. She would be gone for good. After, she finished the jewel of course. With or without Inuyasha she would finish the jewel.

//Touch me baby, tainted love
Touch me baby, tainted love//

She woke up slowly this time. It was night. Her stomach growled at the lack of attention it was receiving. Looking at her clock she realized that it was only 7 o'clock. There should still be food leftover from dinner. Carefully getting out of bed, she slowly made her way down the stairs.

//Once I ran to you (I ran)
Now I'll run from you//

As she gingerly made her way down the stairs, she pondered. She had been having those dreams for over a month. It seemed they wouldn't leave her. But, they were just nightmares. Besides it's not like she could talk to a shrink, like her mother had suggested. They would think she was crazy and slap her straight into a straight jacket.

//This tainted love you've given
I give you all a girl could give you
Take my tears and that's not nearly all//

As much as she did want to go back, she knew that she had to. She owed it to her friends. And she had a responsibility to finish the jewel and kill Naraku. As much as she didn't want to, she had to face Inuyasha once more. But she would not give him her love or her tears anymore.
